I'm so grateful for this video. No repairmen in my area at all, so Kitchenaide said to scrap it and buy a new one (to the tune of $2,000. Watched your video, paid $80 for parts and $20 for overnight shipping, and in about 5 minutes the fridge was working again. You just saved me $1,900!! THANK YOU!!

@@Abundnce10 ...unfortunately...only 4 days and kaputze. Now I have the 2000 for a new fridge and the 100 bucks in parts from the old fridge...puts me in the negative. Should have just bought the new 2000 buck fridge and I would be 100 bucks richer today. !!

Very informative video. I followed your advice.
    1. Unplug the appliance from outlet.
    ****(Very important to do.)***
    2. I checked the fan for blockages, fan spun freely by hand. Checked that the relay was connected and cleaned the coils.
    3. Plugged the appliance back in and after moments and couple taps on compressor(with plastic handle of screwdriver). Fan started spinning and compressor is running.
***May need 3 in 1 in future. As of right now, fan is spinning and compressor is working.***
Definitely a big thumbs up. Thank you for posting this video.👍🏻👍👍👍

My 1998 Whirlpool Side by Side Refrigerator stopped cooling. The fans were working, and I heard clicking noise. I measured resistance using a multi-meter across the common and run and start pins It was with in the range. I followed your video. Ordered a Supco parts from Amazon. Today I connected it as you shown in video. The compressor is working now and fridge is cooling. THANK YOU!

Thanks to this video I was able to diagnose and fix my fridge as I have the same unit. I used a volt meter and tested the overload protector, which tested good. The start relay was bad though when I tested it. I looked on Amazon and found numerous generic replacements for $8-$11. But was going to take two days to get to me. I went to my local appliance repair store. They wanted $53 for the exact replacement parts (overload protector & start relay), but I only needed the start relay. And for reference, the start relay is the part that has the wires plugged into it. The start relay is then plugged into the overload protector, which in turn plugs into the compressor. I could further tell that the start relay was faulty, as when I shook the start relay in my hand I could hear broken parts inside rattling around inside. So luckily the appliance repair store sold a generic start relay for only $15. I brought it home, plugged the wires in it, plugged it into the overload protector and the fridge's compressor started right up. So my advice would be not to waste your time cutting and splicing wires and buying the 3 in 1 kit as indicated in this video. It's so much easier (and cheaper) to just buy the generic start relay and or overload protector if needed. Just pull those two parts off your fridge and do a search on Amazon with your fridge's brand, plus the words start relay or overload protector. And FYI, most of the items on Amazon come with both parts, even if you only actually needed the one. And another tip.... Make sure to pull the bottom front grill plate off the fridge and vacuum out all the dust that's accumulated on the coils. An air compressor works really good for this too. Good luck, you can do this!

    Easy way to remember pinouts:
    1. The "Lonely Pin" (Pin by itself) is the Common (C).
    2. Moving clockwise, the pins are in alphabetical order C-R-S (Common-Run-Start)
    3. Quickstart wires are also in alphabetical order: B-R-W (Black-Red-White)
    4. Black to C(ommon), Red to R(un), White to S(tart)

you need the URC0410 TO ADD BACK THE RUN CAP. Remove the run cap slows down the compressor not getting 100 % out of the motor. Some older do need a run cap but if it has one do not trash it This is a hard start cap in line 1 second and it does not replace a run cap.

Thanks so much - you saved me what was probably going to be a several hundred dollar service call - money I didn't have!
The only problem I encountered was that I had 3 wires going into the compressor instead of just 2, one red and the other two white. I connected the two white wires to one of the two black wires going out of the new 3-in-1 starter and the red wire to the other black line going out. Now I have a working fridge!

Quality video all around! Good camera work for an area difficult to see. Just today I replaced a temperature control switch on a similar Kenmore side by side (Age 1997). The evap coils in the Freezer get ice cold but it takes hours for the refrigerator side to cool down from 50 to 38. The condenser coils do not go beyond slight warm which surprises me. I remember the old days when they could get hot within minutes of use.

The only thing I would add here is to check the thermostat before pulling the refrigerator out. If the compressor goes out usually something led to that and you want to check the drain pan for water and the condenser may need cleaning if it is under the refrigerator.

If the unit is out of warranty installing a hard start kit may work but if the unit is under warranty call a authorized service professional. If you work on your own unit while under warranty then you have just voided your warranty then you're stuck with a busted frig and a big replacement cost for a new one. The compressor will run if damaged in many cases and installing a hard start kit will not do anything for the cooling of the unit. Many compressors will just bypass and run (fails to compress which means zero cooling)

I have a 1996 Amana side by side frig/freezer and has been working fine all these years, then a week ago it stopped making ice so I thought it was the dual water valve so I installed a new water valve and while working on the water valve I noticed the meat in the freezer section was NOT frozen, the refrigerator section was cold enough, however, the freezer section was about 28°, so now it is a different problem.
I did several UA-cam searches and found out that a bad defrost timer could be stuck in defrost and the freezer section would not get cold enough, and it could also be the confessor coils were dirty. I cleaned the coils and rotated the timer a few revolutions however the timer may not have been the problem because the fan and compressor were working. I then noticed the compressor was very HOT, couldn't leave my hand on it so I checked the temperature with a laser thermometer and the compressor was 129°.
I placed a small 8" fan at the back of the frig blowing on the compressor while the built-n fan was also running, after about 8 hours the freezer section temperature, using the laser thermometer aimed at the lower metal shelf was 9° and the ice maker was working, produced a half of bin of ice over night.
The next day I thought everything was working OK, so I attached the lower panel back onto the frig and pushed it back in place in its alcove. The next day the ice maker has stopped working again and the freezer section is back up to 28°. Again the compressor has been running HOT 129°. I friend of mine says the compressor should be warm but NOT hot to the touch and says that is a sign the compressor is low on freon.
My questions: What is the normal operating temp of the compressor while the fan is blowing on it?
What is the cause of the compressor running HOT 129°?
Will adding freon to the compressor lower the temperature and make the freezer section colder?
What temp does the freezer section need to be for the ice maker to work?
By the way Thanks for the great videos.......

    • @byrdappliancespecialists3356
      @byrdappliancespecialists3356  7 років тому +1

+Jon Murany normal operating temp can vary. HOT compressors can be fine. Restrictions in the sealed system, friction in the compressor, low refrigerant, can all be factors. Before messing with the sealed system, you should take a look at the evaporator coils. Leave the fridge on, up to the point you begin taking off the evaporator cover.Take a pic of the evaporator immediately after pulling the cover off. Hard to describe what you're looking for without a picture of the coils, but you want a light frost across the entire evaporator.

Sometimes it needs banged against for the knob to know where it’s set at.

On my fridge, compressor is running (quieter than it should), and there was no cooling in refrigeration and freezer section. I can hear on the freezer section freon going around very quietly but I guess not enough to cool. It feels to be running dry or something. Coils at the end are completely cool, they were hot few days ago.

Are you getting any cooling, at all? If so, you may just need to add some R134a. To do that, you'll likely need to attach a bullet-piercing valve (search on Amazon) to the low side of the compressor, then buy a hose and gauge set ($15), plus a can of R134a ($5-$11). There are UA-cam videos that have clear instructions on all this, but to avoid overcharging, add just a little R134a, at a time and monitor the temperature.

My compressor seems to be warm and I can feel some vibration out if it. The relay is clicking like you mentioned. Is this repair only for if you do not feel any vibrations inside the condenser? I have this relay being delivered today.

Good video, many thanks! Wish you were in CA. I bought the same starter switch relay/capacitor for my Kenmore fridge from Jan 2002. It does not match the separate pieces of existing relay switch and capacitor both of which plug into each other and into compressor. In order for the Supco replacement to work I would have to devise a plug for the compressor connection socket (3 pin prongs). Also my fridge is missing a fan, and Sears tech diagrams don't even show a fan in this model. Compressor comes on, fridge lights work, but compressor does not get warm or hot, and fridge does not cool. Relay switch does not rattle when shaken. Capacitor is working fine. Very confused. Is my compressor low on freon? Why is there no visible fan next to compressor?
Would love some advice please! Most techs in CA will not work on LG appliances, which are all Kenmore fridges. I'm on my own, and my food is spoiling in a substitute fridge. Please help!

If the compressor is on, and relatively cooler to the touch, you most likely had a refrigerant leak.

My kenmore also had a green wire. I just left it unhooked and it’s working. I’m guessing the green is a ground?

I went to to do the repair that you suggested in your video and when I open the back of the fridge, the previous repairman had already put in the 3 and 1 device. It wasn’t working. I replaced it with a new one, but I’m just getting is a Buzzing sound every 10 seconds or so, but the compressor is not kicking on. Do you think that means the compressor is toast?

I needed an LG EAD64168633 Harness Assembly (for an LG Refrigerator LRFCS2503S) but accidentally ordered the wrong part EBG60663205 Refrigerator Relay and Overload for LG.
    Can these two be spliced~?

My compressor is on but the compressor fan is spinning very slowly. You can't even feel a breeze lowing toward compressor. Judging by the fan in your video it should be spinning a lot faster. This is on an old Kenmore Frig. Any thoughts before i order a new fan.

i have age profile i think 2013 model.. compressor kicks on runs but both lines are warm?? one line was very cold for 30 seconds but then just stays semi cool. Barely maybe around 70 deg.

My kenmoore coldspot 106.5 looks same as yours. (Mouse stuck in fan. Relay start looks burnt. Kicks on for a few sec and shuts off after mouse removed and fan working)
I got my 3n1 hooked up. But the power clip going into the relay that you cut has 1 red, and then 2 white on the other slot of the wire connector. Since both are on the same connector side i put
Both white wires on 1 black 3n1 wire, then the single red on the other.
My 3 prints on compressor were same single black on bottom . then the white and red on top (upside down triangle)
Compressor is running now. Only been 10min havnt noticed cooling yet.
Ever run into the 2 white wires on connector clip before?
    3 year old fridge

    • @TargetTime

Traced the wires I cut that had 2 whites. one just goes to a clip in the fan, the other goes back with the other wires. Guess daisy chained from fan or something.
However compressor is hot and nothing cold yet. I think my compressor is burnt up. But it sounds like it's running I don't get it

Supco parts. Hopefully they make better relays than they do surge protectors for air conditioners. I had a Supco air cond surge protector that malfunctioned and started my house on fire.

    Hi Byrd,
    Here are my
    Symptoms:
    Refrigerator lights on
    refrigerator evaporator fan running
    refrigerator condenser fan running
refrigerator compressor warm/hot to the touch
relay switch turning on and off.
if the relay switch is bad would that cause the compressor feel warm/hot?
    Thanks
    Vince
