I was going to say this exact thing! I've never really enjoyed gaming, so overwatch is my first FPS ever and I get really nervous and embarrassed about my bad aiming. So I've been watching a bunch of tip videos and this was the best one by far, if only because of how comfortable he made me feel. I'm excited to start practicing with these tips now. He really WOULD make an awesome teacher, I think.

This video has helped me a ton. I was doing the headshot Ana custom games and I felt like I wasnt really improving and just spamming my LMB hoping to get headshots. One thing I can possibly add to this video: It is REALLY important to not tense up.
I found myself tensing up and flexing my bicep when it came to high tense situations and my aim got worse. I just remembered to relax and just imagine the enemy team as targets that I should click on.

This is super important. I've been training with the Ana bots and it has worked on my flicks but I'm an advanced aimer but the thing I have noticed to screw up my aiming the most is tensing my muscles when things heat up, more so if I need to do a clutch save. It's something you don't even notice if you are using high sens and aiming with your wrist but the moment you start aiming with your hand on low sens it becomes a thing.

Indeed this video is the only one i can say actually helped improve my aim instead of all the flicking and headshot only practices. Overall this guy gives the best overwatch advice i've seen.
A true proof that you don't need to be the best leetzor-top-pro gamer to give the best analysis and improvement guides.

This is definitely the kind of video I been looking for. Like, not just for Overwatch, but FPS games in general. As someone trying to learn Sombra, I can honestly say when I unload my clip, only about 20% of them hit. I undershoot, overshoot, I have a jittery arm, and it tenses easily in the heat of a fight. It's me definitely, but the default sensitivity could also be a factor. I am going to use this video well, and hopefully I can post my results a tthe end of the week.

Forgot to check back here. End result: My aim has improved. I cannot snipe to save my life, but I am doing a lot better with my aim and locking on my opponents. I cannot play characters like Tracer who has to constantly move and shoot. I can however keep my Zarya beam on enemies, land Mei right clicks, and get more heals off with Ana.
In the end, getting a steady hand is definitely not easy for me, but at least I am keeping calm and using more than my wrist when aiming and shooting.

First of all, I'd like to thank you very much this is currently very much so helping me improve my aim. Within one day, starting from the basics and onto Ana training. I spent quite a few good hours at the practice range, and I managed to go (in one day) from 100 Ana bots in 27 minutes to 190 Ana bots in 30 minutes.
I'm going to go through little tweaks in the method that you used that helped me. Firstly, I'd like to note that whether or not you can easily follow the robot's eye ball in the first step isn't always to do with the sensitivity, I'd say it's better to start on the next steps and then come back to it as it can improve as you get a hold of your current sensitivity. Your method for improving aim is great, however, I think you missed one step. I spent a 2 or so hours at least (if not more) standing still at different positions near the moving robots and trying to trace them with my mouse until they stopped for a moment and I could get a shot. I started off with body shots but being a somewhat experienced FPS player (not good, experienced) I quickly went on to headshotting them when they stopped. I did this for a long time, until I could easily headshot the bots. This is honestly when tracing started to get more fun for me as I could feel my tracing was right enough to shoot before they stopped. I would do this for a long time, until I could easily enough headshot them while they move. I changed angle every once in a while. Only after that did I go to moving and shooting between them. Once I could do that confidently, I went on to training with Ana bots.
This is where my tracing training showed. Firstly, when I train with Ana bots I put them on both teams as it helps to give me a bit more of a dynamic battle field rather than one where all the enemies are focused on me. I found the hard bot's behavior patterns were really interesting as they tended to move around and then pause for approximately half a second. This was a very important discovery for me as it meant I could practice tracing them until they stopped and then shooting them. I repeated the process until it felt natural to shoot them before they even stopped, and trust me this feels rewarding.
Hope this helped anyone else who was having trouble. I always knew I needed to improve my aim but was never motivated to do it and, surprisingly, it was quite fun. Thanks again for the guide, it was the most helpful one yet for me.
P.S. I found that flicking is something you can only do after the normal training. When you DO flick, what you want to do is trace the target long enough and then use the flick to help you get a little more accurate. The flick should come when the courser is already near the target's head.

Hey Skyline, good videos, good community building, good job! I love how you're saying to start at level 1, because as a multi-instrumentalist I am well acquainted with fine-tuning my body, starting from the beginning. Bad habits happen when you skip steps. But that's just the dilemma: you don't know all the steps when you're at the beginning of pursuing something. So what can you do to combat that? Run through them all habitually. Organize and reorganize them. Obsess over the entire process and always be trying to determine what "level" you really belong on. To determine the level that would benefit you the most, in the present, in the least amount of time.
Our brains don't have a big capacity for memory, and most of the memories get pruned away over time, but one part of your brain never forgets: the basal ganglia. It's why you'll never forget how to ride a bike, and it's why amputees have ghost limbs. Human babies can't walk instinctively. They learn every movement by themselves over time. When they're born, they can pretty much hold the fetal position, and cry. Otherwise they're flailing rag-dolls. They flail until they have strength, and slowly discover and coordinate their muscles, one by one. Your body is pretty much a shitload of strings around a couple hundred jointed sticks. Your consciousness can't possibly comprehend how much is really going on in your brain, but you sort of can, if you're thinking about it in the smallest, most fundamental instance. Just one little point a to b. Then you repeat it until you've done every little point a to b you could possibly think of. And slowly you built on it, "chunking" the information, slowly translating into more coordinated movements than just flailing. The more you chunk, the less your consciousness worries about the previous tasks, and the more consciousness you have for yourself. You build until it's hard-wired and effortless. This is how to be smart or good at anything, by the way. Even the process of thinking "One plus one equals two" can by chunked by writing or saying it. So if you truly value ANY skill, take this methodology to heart for it. And you have to truly value it, because it's a tedious, time-consuming methodology. A methodology that anybody can figure out by themselves. That's what people mean by "you just gotta want it." Your value of it is what really comes down to how well you'll do.
Also, thank you for stressing posture in your "Mouse Techniques And Settings" video. But one oversight is that your wrist isn't actually straight. It's in pronation. eorthopod.com/sites/default/files/images/elbow_oa_anatomy02_bklt.jpg
A straight wrist would be like karate-chopping the top of the desk. There are ergonomic mice out there shaped just for it and I suggest anybody who takes PC seriously tries one, whether you're a gamer or a graphic designer. Most mice are shaped poorly and make you put your hand flat on the table though, and most people don't like change. So why change? Why surrender the context and stability of a flat surface for the side of your thumb and the tip of your pinky to graze? Because you're using a crutch, silly. It's nothing fatal, but imagine how a person would be shaped after using a crutch for their entire life. The threat of not changing is simply that you'll have a specialized arm. That might not mean jack shit to you, but it sure means a lot of me. I want my arms for other things. And I can karate-chop the table for stability at any time. I guarantee you it's better than normal mice, for what that's worth.
And with that I have to say I don't believe you're on level 1 either, Skyline, though you are very close. Nearly anybody's hand by itself has enough fine-tuned nerves to let you quickly put the cursor wherever you want with a bit of practice, but there's the dilemma of constant movement thrown in, too. Movement by you, and movement by the enemy. That's where the shoulder comes into play, it has a huge range of motion for you to utilize. You can do the majority of motion from the shoulder, then plant the heel of your hand (or your karate chop) and flick to their head. From just a technical, bodily perspective, level 1 is actually sitting up straight throughout the game. Then it's learning to do a straight vertical and horizontal line from the shoulder. Then it's learning to coordinate your wrist movements in 8-16 directions. Then compensation for your own movements: strafing and movement abilities, as well as projectile speed, depending. Then compensating for your enemies' movement. And finally, you chunk those 5. After that it's just utilizing those 5 thing and finding the fine line of how much time and focus you need to get a headshot, in order to win a "standoff" kind of scenario. That's about all there is for the technical aspects of aiming. But it's important to get it out of the way if you want to get far. Although with the crazy range of movements you get out of the combined characters, Overwatch would be very very hard to master.
I'd suggest complete pc noobs try this exercise for your shoulder accuracy. It will work for any skill level though, if you just turn up the sensitivity. I agree that having ridiculous sensitivity in-game is bad, but for this exercise I set my mouse sensitivity high. All you need to do is click and drag boxes on your desktop, without planting your hand. No wrist contact. Just coordination at the shoulder. The make straight lines, and if you flatten the lines together, they turn invisible. Ultimately you want to drag an invisible line in all 4 directions. This is impossibly hard for your shoulder to do! Well instead you should just lay our off-hand over your mouse hand and use IT to do the aiming instead. By using your other hand, you're showing your shoulder how much tension it really needs. Which I'd say is lower than the average gamer has. Your mouse hand should pretty much be doing nothing. Just be along for the ride. Because even if it didn't intedependently make the motions, it was shown the exact range of motion you want it making, and the basal ganglia can remember that with repetition.
Wanna get good sense of 360 degrees of motion? Slowly go around a pole, spin 360, and go the other way. Over and over. This is especially helpful when changing sensitivity
But yeah...For aim? Get your shoulder making straight lines.
Does anybody have something to add or change to my arbitrary structure, btw? I'm literally a noob gamer with no experience. I can't say my methods (in Overwatch, at least) are proven in any sense.

Thanks- this is probably the most helpful video I've seen on Overwatch. Before trying out your exercises, I always avoided the high mechanical skill heroes because I was intimidated at the aiming required. After practicing for half an hour, and fiddling with my mouse settings, I QP'd McCree and actually got some elims by slowly tracking. I'm still nowhere near competent, but now I know that I can improve with time, and that I can play all the heroes without pissing off my team. Much appreciated.

I usually hold down as I'm pretty confident in my aim with Zenyatta and my avg accuracy in comp is 49.08%. Maybe it's just because I have over 30 hours as Zenyatta so I'm comfortable with constantly adjusting my aim in time for my next orb since I'm so used to his fire rate. I'm just okay with continuously leading my shots. Even able take out Pharahs like this.
I'm not tryna say I'm just some godly Zenyatta, I'm only in gold. I'm just tryna say that eventually you get used to it

Agreed. Except in my case, it was with Soldier. I had a REALLY bad habit of continuing to fire while re-positioning my crosshair, which made me waste upwards of 1/4 to 1/2 a clip before I even got to the target. I'm toning it down now, but videos like these really allowed me to do so by opening my eyes to the common mistakes I've always made.

don't listen to the idiots talking about 120hz monitor and 60fps being a problem. You'll be fine. 1v1 is much more than aim - your movement, how you predict what enemy will do, positioning; it all counts. If you're losing vs enemy widow, try to think about why you did so. Probably your position was obvious and/or you spotted their widow too late.

I followed this guide and my aim got better, in fact, it was better than it ever was I was tracking little to not at all and I could still get my shots off. The next day, I was back to normal, however, and I stayed at this half-good, half-bad state. Right now, I feel like I'm doing tracking too much instead of pointing at where their head is.

Similar idea works there, too. Obviously it's a little hindered due to the aim assist, but you can do the "tracking" exercise using a piece of the environment. Solo, I used to go on the Zanzibar remake map in Halo 3 back in the day and shoot the birds there (there's no aim assist on them). With a friend, we'd make an octagon in Halo 4 and set it to snipers only. There's always a way to practice regardless of system choice.

c4bb4g3 Also, you can turn off the aim assistance.

***** Aim assistance is a feature in many console FPS games. Controllers are often less precise than a mouse with regard to aim, so the computer helping you a bit isn't seen as cheating.

I've been playing Overwatch for a while (130s in Quick Play) and it's the first FPS I've really gotten into. I'm trying to get into more aim-baised (Offense) heroes, and this may be a silly question but is it really worth it to aim for headshots? Is it better to get damage off on more body shots than fewer headshots? I find myself either A) forgetting to aim specifically for headshots in the first place or B) missing more because i'm inherently aiming for a smaller target. the ratio between body/head damage vary by hero/weapon choice? By target hero? I've never really unpacked this and I'd love to hear from anyone who knows the game mechanics better than I do. Thanks!

    • @fredrik-c
      @fredrik-c 8 років тому +24

It mostly depends on the hero you are playing but also whom you are shooting at and which range. Some examples are Widowmaker and McCree which have weapons that shoot few impactful shots, here you should aim for the head. If you can not hit those headshots you will do better for your team on another hero who can put more bullets in the air like Soldier, Reaper etc. Next aspect is the target, some are very small and have even smaller hitboxes for headshots, tracer and ana comes to mind. These heroes also have less hitpoints so you can probably kill them with body shots. The last part is the range, a missed headshot does nothing so try to calculate the odds of hitting a headshot vs the odds of hitting a bodyshot. Probably go for bodyshots at ranges where you are not comfortable hitting the head.

    • @samuelpage5409
      @samuelpage5409 8 років тому

The damage for a headshot is always 2x that of a bodyshot, or so I've heard. If you can get a headshot in one shot, take it. If it takes you three shots to get a headshot, you aren't getting a benefit. That's what I've learned, dunno if that helps.

Always practice to get headshots, but yeah, if you keep missing the headshots in actual matches, you will want to stick to body shots, and as Fredrik said, soldier/tracer are better if you cannot get consistent headshots(though again, they are better if you can). I find myself doing the same thing in actual matches though, I end up aiming at center of mass instead of headshots in the heat of the moment, if I keep practicing though I should be able to not only get out of the habit of reverting back to center of mass, but also be able to actually hit the headshots more consistently.

      Concentrating on accuracy-percentages is bullshit.
Having high accuricy (except for Widow) shows that you don't get all the shots that are possible, you're too hesitant.
Hitting 40 shots out of 100 (40%) is better than hitting 15 shots out of 30 (50%) and especially for D.Va (before the 3-tank meta) it was important to land the chip-damage on the enemy team, which naturally pulled your accuracy down. But that lower accuracy didn't mean you were bad.
Also, hitting shots on Reinhardt's shield, Symmetra's shield and sentries, Winston's shield, Zarya's barriers, Torbjörn's turret, Junkrat's trap and mine and Widowmaker's venom mine don't count towards accuracy, so if you had a match against a Reinhardt and your accuracy is >50%, it means you didn't help your team at all to get the Reinhardt shield down.
That's why I said in the beginning that the accuracy-stat is utter bullshit.

You just need to practice more! Also, you should try to aim using your entire arm, as opposed to using just your wrist. You'll have a lot more control, even if it will feel weird at first. You may also want to invest in a large mousepad, if space isn't limited. That way you can play comfortably on a low sensitivity. My mousepad is just shy of two feet by 1.5 feet, and it takes quite a bit of the mousepad to do a 360 turn. It's a comfortable fit for me, though it may not be for everyone, and it definitely takes getting used to

I took this advice and immediately improved my aim. If you read this, please consider adding something I found immensely helpful.
I notice that you aim to the bot’s head once, then fire until it’s destroyed.
I actually found it very helpful to “reset” my aim before every shot. What I mean is that I would aim, shoot, move off, aim again, shoot, move off, etc.
I did it very slowly, making sure to hit as many shots as I could. That’s the only thing I could say I did a bit different. Great video, very helpful, and I hope you find my tip useful as well.

My goodness. I Hated Mcree, I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with with him, never mind land consistent headshots. Having become quite good at tf2, I figured I was pretty good at that style of shooter so I used similar mouse sensitivity on overwatch. As soon as I tried your 'robot's eye' technique I realised I was overshooting so much I may as well have been shooting at my own team. I had to turn down my sensitivity to a fifth of what it was before and immediately noticed at least a 50% increase in my shots placed vs shots missed. From this video alone I shot up from silver to gold. Thanks so much for this, this is easily the most effective tutorial video I have ever seen.

I used to hobby sports shooting and the same principles hold in fps games. Accuracy over speed. You want to make sure you got a image and the feeling of the perfect shot in your mind and always go for that shot and always take the time. Speed comes by practice. This is a very good guide!

  • @tinytim6925

Great guide. I LOVE training my accuracy for some reason. I do it for like an hour a day. Tried so many different modes and settings, here is what I found to be the most effective at simulating real player movement while increasing accuracy quickly. Before you do this, spend like five minutes warming up at the training room on the moving bots.
    Custom game
    Mode: Quick play/competitive
Map: Oasis or any KoTH/Hybrid map
Map point (if Oasis): First point
    Damage: 25%
    Health: 200%
    Respawn: 25%
    Ult: 50%
    Headshots only: Yes
Add 1 Hard Ana bot to your team, 2 to the enemy team. I suggest training using McCree, Soldier, or Widow. After you're decent with hitscan, move on to your favorite hero.
This is the best IMO because the bots will stay on the point, but constantly move around randomly. They'll never move in a predictable path like in skirmish. The game will eventually be in Overtime forever unless you kill both Ana's at the same time.
If you went with Oasis, then you can train your reaction time around corners because of the big round thing in the middle of the point. Also on Oasis, sometimes one Ana bot gets stuck in one spot, which is good because it lets you practice reacting quickly around the corner (circle around the middle pillar, keeping the crosshair lined up to where you think stationary Ana's head will be, and see how quickly you can fire when she's visible). Also the stationary one is great for practicing your flicking/strafing. The other Ana will move more randomly and are good for tracking and more advanced flicking. There's also high ground to practice on. Finally the jump pad is good for training Widow trick shots.
The point isn't to kill the bots, it's to ONLY TAKE SHOTS YOU ARE 100% SURE WILL HIT. Even if you're slow to shoot, only take the shot when you know you'll connect. Missing is bad. This trains your brain to know when a shot will land. The more you do this, the faster you'll get (while still retaining very high accuracy). Every time you land a shot, it's like getting +.05% to your accuracy skill, everytime you miss a shot, it's -.02% to your accuracy. It's ok if you miss a lot, as long as you're giving 100% to each shot and learning each time you miss. No spamming. Only take controlled, guaranteed shots. If you miss, think to yourself something like "shoot earlier next time, shoot later, or slow down"...ect. If you miss like 3 times in a row, stop shooting for a few seconds while still tracking, then resume. Never get spammy. This forces your brain to learn from each mistake and calibrate. Eventually you'll be near 100% headshot accuracy with high speed.
I've tried SO many aiming exercises, this is by far the most effective. Not the most fun or satisfying, but if you want results - this is the drill for you. Don't forget to use your most evasive movement while training, even though the bots can't hurt you. Random strafing, occasionally jumping/crouching. Program your brain to move like that while consistently landing headshots.

Although it accounts for very little on PC, I've strong aim and game sense on console FPS's, much higher than average, but poor performance of aiming on PC, besides with a tablet for Osu!, due to never really playing on the platform, and I can say this is a clear and correct basis for aim practice and effective ability functionality. Nothing will help you improve besides working out the kinks and grinding out the necessary hours for self improvement. Good on you, this ought to be pinned to all aim assist forums, for all games.

I have been playing with 4000 dpi and sensitivity in-game at 17. My accuracy always sucked and wasn't improving no matter how much i played. Thanks for making this video it helped a lot!

Literally needed this today. I love Overwatch, but I grew up playing educational games or RPGs, without a lot of aiming. I am completely inexperienced, and I realized after trying to do one of those McCree/Ana custom headshot enabled exercises that I actually couldn't really aim at all. I feel like I don't know how to make the reticule align with the target.

Thanks for you and all the other guys telling me to lower my sensitivity. Back when I played competitive Unreal and TF2 back in my 20s, I was able to snipe with a ridiculous sensitivity of 8400 DPI. Now, playing semi-casual overwatch and being older, I have had really unsteady aim tracking Pharahs and other easy targets as 76.
I started weaning myself off the half-inch mousepad strats and my aim has improved considerably. I do think there's an upper limit to effective sensitivity unless you're REALLY good at high sens.

I've always thought consistency is key in improving your aim. To hear someone say it feels good :)
One thing that is kind of important to recognize with overwatch, is that good players move in strafe patterns that are highly random and often unpredictable. Or at least it requires you to flick at uncomfortable speeds which will lower your chances of hitting the shots. Just simply accepting that fact will help you understand what habits to focus on and for what reason. There's shooting for pressure and there's shooting for consistency. When you find yourself in a flick duel (two players strafing randomly) you lack an advantage. Often it comes down to who can endure the longest without making a predictable move. My point is that taking such fights is not a good idea, but training for them is not a bad one either. Just remember there is aiming for pressure and consistency. Know when to adapt and don't mix it up.

You are one of the few people who stress to practice accuracy first before speed. Most people do it wrong and train speed first.
    Very nice thinking Skyline

I do agree with you on basically everything. What somepeople might not think about, is that some heros are better with higher sensitivitys. Genji, is an example where high sensitivity is good. This list includes winston, symmetra and so on. Widowmaker and McCree are better with lower sensitivitys since you always should aim at the head. As for the point that spamming is not good... Spamming is not something you should do whilst training. But when it comes to real games. Spamming can be good in certain situations and/or places. Example: Your on your way to a point and you think you can make it cause some teammates are alive on point. They die and now you have to fall back. Now it's a good time to spam. Spam whilst walking backwards to make sure no enemy peaks you to kill you. // Not really one of the best examples, but hey you know what i mean. Also top notch english on this comment xD

This is the video I've been looking for - a couple exercises that are for bread and butter aim improvement. When I saw "there is no magic formula" I was like "This is probably it." Was not disappointed. Will attempt these and report back after a week or so.

You know, at first i believe this wouldn't make any difference, but i practiced with your exercises and especially the eyeball tracking thing, and i got immediately better at aiming in just 10-20 minutes... Thanks man, make more fine videos like those! you may actually get me out of platinum :D

Honestly this is how I went from ( in CSGO) awful aim as a past console player and not much FPS experience, to becoming an actual proficient/ CONSISTANT aimer. Its a hard transition (for me) between both games and I have much more difficulty in overwatch.
I don't know why I thought training would be any different for the two games
    Great video. Def subbing

.....I owe you a million thanks. My aim as McCree has improved significantly from 20% to a stable 45%-50%!
