Shenmue III was announced as most of you I'm sure know, but with that came a lot of misinformation. I'd like to clear as much up as I can. The game is coming to PC and PS4.

+Sergio Apodaca I never said that. What are you talking about? Sega killed themselves, I've said it many many many times.
And Sony isn't giving us Shenmue 3. We're giving us Shenmue 3 dude, that's kind of the whole point.

James Machuga Yeah, they're basically mini-movies that show the story events of Shenmue I and II.
Shenmue II on the XBox included this for Shenmue I.

AdamKoralik believe it or not but there was a Shenmue successor franchise like Bloodstained, Yooka-Laylee, and MN.9. that franchise is the Yakuza franchise. the Yakuza franchise took many of the ideas and concepts of Shenmue and made a new franchise.

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO EMULATE SHENMUE 1 AND 2. PLEASE THUMBS UP SO EVERYONE CAN SEE.
In order to play Shenmue 1 and 2 with emulation get nullDC and have the following settings:
Before anything else you need to format the VMU, follow this thread to do it- ngemu.com/threads/sticky-how-to-set-up-a-vmu-memory-card.137766/
The settings below are all found under the Options tab.
    - nullDC settings
    Dynarec: ON
    CP pass: ON
    Underlock FPU: OFF
    - Graphic plugin: NullVPR or PowerVR
Full Screen: ON (or maximum supported resolution depending on plugin)
    Asept ratio: Stretch
    Paletted Textures: Versioned
    Sort: Triangle
    Modifier Volumes: Off
    - Sound plugin: Null AICA
Buffer audio: 2048 (click on config and make sure it's set to 2048)
    Sync Audio: ON
    Mute cd: ON
    Mute Sound: OFF
These settings get rid of the static sound and strange emulation errors with Ryo's character model. There will be no character shadows, but on a game as old as Shenmue this is hardly a sacrifice. I recommend playing the PAL version since Shenmue 2 never got an NTSC release on the dreamcast, so that's the only way you can transfer over your toy capsules and stuff, and unless you wanna drop money on Xbox Shenmue 2, it's the only option you got.
Even after this you'll still have problems loading the game up on the PAL version, in order to load your game use the following settings:
    nullDC Settings:
    Cable Type: VGA(0) (RGB)
    System Region: EUR
    Broadcast Format: PAL
You need a decent computer to run all this, so don't come replying to me with "It's too choppy on my Intel HD chipset waaah." I'll just ignore you.
EDIT: Almost forgot to mention. The old sega arcade games don't work because in the game they ran off an emulator of their own. Rest of the mini games are fine though.

EDIT: Spread this article, it clarifies Sony's position! www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/141291-Sony-will-be-involved-in-marketing-and-production-for-Shenmue-3
To be honest guys, I'm kinda pissed at how the KS campaign is being handled. I know Shenmue needed it and that's fine, but...
    1) The pitch video looks amateurish and I doubt any non-long-time-fan would find it appealing. It needs a huge "PRE ALPHA" tag slapped on it.
    2) The campaign page is messy: stretch goals are at the bottom, reward descriptions are confusingt (I'm looking at you, Backer Exclusive Scrolls)
    3) The campaign PR is virtually non-exixstent
    4) The campaign updates are too short and uninspired
    5) I'm reading a lot of comments of people who are saying they're not willing to pledge because the campaign is not transparent: where will the funds EXACTLY go? How much money has already been secured via external funding? In what way is Sony backing the project? Only PR? We have no clear answers.
    6) Yu Suzuki needs $10mm to make the full Shenmue 3 experience he envisioned, as he wrote on the AMA Reddit. Well, WRITE THAT ON THE KS PAGE!
This campaign could raise much more with a little more effort.
It looks like nobody in decision-making position reads the KS comment section (at least that's what backers are telling me in the KS comment section). I tweeted my concerns to Yu Suzuki, Ys Net, Sony, Shenmue 500k, Shenmue Dojo and Team Yu. Please favorite/retweet to spread the word: bit.ly/1IqP0P6

Vampirerockstar I believe it to be similar to what Adam said, actually.
Sony won't do a thing to interrupt development but they support ShemueIII in certain ways, which unaware players can probably see the best in its exclusivity for the PS4 (that is, if you leave out PC)
Maybe there will be a port to another platform someday but so far, Sony invested in this game most likely to get another exclusive.

***** totally agree. Sony has a lot to gain in this. If they have console exclusivity for both Shemue 3 and FF7 (even if it would be just for 1 year), they know that's a ton of consoles already sold. Simple and effective. They sell PS4 and we get Shenmue? Everybody wins. :D

Yeah, Adam, you're totally right about the prices of the old games skyrocketing. Shenmue 1 is going for around $80 or so on Ebay, and even the Xbox version of Shenmue II is around $60, not to mention the ridiculous price of the Dreamcast version ranging anywhere from $120-$250. Because of your videos, I decided to back the project even though I've never actually played a Shenmue game before, but now just trying to get the old games is going to be hard. Since I don't actually own a Dreamcast, I thought I'd just grab the Xbox version of Shenmue II on the cheap, but that's not even possible anymore. Still, your devotion to this game franchise is inspiring, and I admire all that you've done to promote them,

Great video Adam. I’m one of those guys that never got into the series quite like the die-hard fans did back in 2000. That said, I went back last year and finally got into it in a much bigger way, thanks in a large part because of your videos. I’ve Kickstarted $500, and stand by it.
Sony has a vested interest in this. People who think they shouldn’t back the Kickstarter because Sony will just fund the game and that’s that are missing the point. I’m sure Sony will assist as much as they possibly can, for logical reasons, but ultimately every last cent that goes into the Kickstarter will go back into the development of the game. If Sony can generate a few million dollars on top of that great, if it’s all for marketing then so be it. Like you said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sazuki-san gets his hands on some dev kits, maybe some programmers, etc. The better the game turns out, the better it is for everyone.
The biggest confusion with all of this stems from the media outlets, and the fact the Kickstarter launched at Sony’s press conference so automatically a lot of people are saying ‘oh ok, Sony’s clearly funding the game’. Next up is the Kickstarter FAQ page which states:
‘No, we cannot make an open world game for $2 million. Shenmue will be produced using both the funds raised from the Kickstarter and through other funding sources already secured by Ys Net Inc. We are very sorry, but due to contractual obligations, details of outside investments will not be disclosed.’
‘Other funding sources’ is also what some people keep sticking too.
As for SEGA, I’m really proud they allowed Shenmue 3 to be made, but how awesome would it be to get an HD remake of the first two parts with SEGA’s blessing. Hopefully this Kickstarter opens their eyes to an HD remake. I know many people are going to want to play the first two games once this one is nearing release, and it kind of sucks that won’t be an option, and ultimately it may hurt sales because of it.
Ok thanks for reading the novel haha.

This is a game I DESPERATELY want to play. I ordered the game last year on Amazon and the game came is with the discs in fantastic condition. After playing the first disc for about an hour or so, it started to freeze. Over and over again I tried to play it but to my loss, it never worked. I tried all the methods of turning the system upside down, side ways, everything. No luck. I've looked into this issue online and it seems to have been a major problem amongst people and apparently there has been numerous copies with malfunctioning discs as if it was a manufacturers error. I'd attempt to buy the game again, but I'm sure I'd continually run into this issue and these games aren't the cheapest to keep trying. I also tried downloading the ISO files and the programs needed but in the process, my computer had gotten viruses. There just seems to be no hope for me to playing this game that I have always wanted to immerse myself in. That all said, is there any information you could give me on restoring my hope in being able to play this monumental game? Either that or do you miraculously have a copy you can sell to me? lol I'm just looking for any possible alleyways to successfully playing this game and any help would be greatly appreciated.

It was point blank not smart to not make it multi-console (yes, I know it's on PC). He basically cut off Xbox owners who would've gladly contributed and probably would easily be halfway to his $10 million goal. There's no reason to not have an Xbox version and it's too bad.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  9 років тому +1

Aaron Starks I'm going to have to call bullshit on that.
Giving Sony nearly exclusive access to it means they're dumping in millions of dollars in advertising.
A simple Xbox One option would not match that kind of power.
Don't get me wrong, I want it on every platform under the sun, but let's be economically pragmatic here.

    • @AaronStarks
      @AaronStarks 9 років тому +2

AdamKoralik You're acting like A: Sony is the only one that can pay for advertising and B: Others couldn't do it better.
Just putting "Sony" and "economic power" in the same sentence is an oxymoron in and of itself.
It was shortsighted to allow Sony to use them for the PR.
I said when this happened that Sony doesn't care if the Last Guardian or Shenmue III ever sees the light of day. They simply wanted an emotional response at E3 and be seen as the "good guys" that "saved" two long-awaited games. It worked.
Hell, even YOU said Sony admitted this in your video!
On Suzuki's part, it was short-sighted. Imagine how many more contributions they'd have already if Playstation, Xbox and PC gamers ALL were looking forward to playing it.
So I don't by an atom of this "Sony The Savior" bullshit. Sony used Suzuki and he was short-sighted. Period.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  9 років тому +2

      Aaron Starks That's just silly.
If that was true we'd have seen this game YEARS ago.
You needed someone beyond Sega to step up and have a reason to invest.
Sony is giving him marketing, while letting him control funding for development. Yu Suzuki is a bit of a control freak, and no company would allow him that kind of freedom with the stigma Shenmue has on it.
Again, as much as I agree it'd be nice if it was everywhere, that won't happen and frankly that makes sense.
You have to weigh Sony's free marketing/publishing funds VS potential Kickstarter funds from XBox users.
While I can't prove it, I find it HIGHLY unlikely XBox users would outweigh Sony's marketing push.
Plus, then, you have to find a new source of funds for marketing. It's just math dude.

AdamKoralik He makes a good point. Look at Sony's The Interview movie. They told everyone they were going to pull the movie It got people wondering what was so controversial about it. And when it was released it made a lot of money. The movie isn't that good. I'm a Seth Rogan fan and that movie had it's moments but over all it was dog shit. Noway they would have made that much because of word of mouth. It's the kind of shit Sony pulls to make money. They like to dangle the carrot in front of you, then take it away, and then bring it back to make you more excited for it. Cause of the sense of happiness after the disappointment is so much better.

  • @JmanRising
    @JmanRising 9 років тому +2

Unfortunately people still think Sony is funding Shenmue, people also seem to forget this is going to be on PC too so its not exclusive. There is no way this is going to reach 10 million because of controversy. So really Sony has been a double edged sword for Shenmue. Sony really screwed up by saying they are supporting the game but not being specific about how they are supporting the game up front. At least the people who funded the game can actually receive a copy of the game unlike most Kickstarters.

The only thing that's a little bit of a bummer is that I'd like to play Shenmue 1&2 first.
If SEGA doesn't jump at the opportunity and release re-mastered versions they oughta be slapped.

Hey Adam, just a thought, maybe they're planning to release a physical copy of it and the digital version is just the Kickstarter reward. Their FAQ only makes reference to the digital copy as a Kickstarter reward. IDK if there's other information out there.
Also, I'm curious, for the Kickstarter reward, did you go with the digital PS4 copy or the physical PC copy? Just curious as to what you consider the lesser of two evils.

Hey Adam! Some of our viewers directed us here from our latest video on the subject. This was VERY informative.
I still believe it's a pretty big deal for Sony to take on the promotional responsibilities. That's still a substantial risk for them. It's just a little strange to me that they would take on only part of the risk. Sony believes in the project, but not enough to fund it outright. They still need proof that there's a market for this game.
Other companies who want to see the potential in a game would have jumped in midway through the Kickstarter like what Deep Silver did with Mighty No 9. Not that that's particularly right either.
I just don't want this to be the new trend for companies. It's like 2015s version of the pre-order. It's just WEIRD that a company like Sony would be like "hey you want this? well go get it yourselves."
    -Bob

Good job dispelling the myths of Shenmue's original budget. People are so damn cynical; they think it makes them look smart. When you think of all the years of R&D and subsequent marketing that went into those games, it's really not all that much. Game budgets are always skewed for boasting and marketing purposes. With borrowed assets, a story and characters already conceived a 15 years ago, music, etc., Ysnet is going to blow everyone away on a 10mil budget.
Also, consider the challenges Yu faced 15 years ago creating the original game from the ground up. They were figuring out and attempting a lot of things for the first time. Now they have a pre-made engine (Unreal) that will make it much easier for them to implement the gameplay elements they want.

Just beat this game a few minutes ago. The game is absolutely beautiful and the musicians involved created a great and enticing soundtrack. This was a very emotionally driven game and the ending really captures your curiosity for the future of Ryo. The only downsides to this game imo are the incessant questioning you must do and the agonizing work days. Aside from that the game was amazing. I ended up getting Shenmue 2 in the mail not too long ago and I cannot wait to see what it has in store.

so in the late 90s the budget was 47 million but it would take 135 million in 2015 to have the same buying power 47 million did back then based on a inflation calculator I used... so even if you divide that number by 4 because it was for four games it would still take over 30 million of today's money to match what they put into one of the original games budget wise. Although I wonder if its easier to develop games today vs the late 90s?? I mean PC hardware in the late 90s was crazy expensive so maybe advancements in software/hardware technology over the last 14 years will make the games develop require less than it did to develop 1 and 2. I feel like they will need at least 10 million from the kickstarter, I might double my pledge towards the end if they don't have 10 million. (hopefully a surge of others do the same)

My takeaway from this video is the point at 19:02.
Like, I didn't even know this. That is incredibly sad. What kind of poison has swept the global games industry to the point that time-honoured characters and franchises loved the world over, even those far more famous than Shenmue, are no longer financially viable, or at best are just special Kickstarter projects for devoted fans? Why can't we see proper games like this on the shelves of stores again? Why does it have to be so ultra-safe? Just... that is so depressing to me.

Shenmue III also won't cost as much because...
    - They don't have to develop technology that doesn't exist.
    - They presumably won't be hiring musicians to play the dev team music while they work.
    - They don't need to create and find a way to scan head sculptures of every character in the games.
    - They (hopefully) won't be daft enough to fly the English language voice cast over to their Japanese recording studio just to read their lines.
    - Marketing is covered, so won't eat into the budget.
    - Assets are being recycled.
    - The research still exists.
    - Suzuki has practically had this in part-time pre-production for over a decade.
    - They don't need to port the game from one engine to another.
    - Product placement doesn't seem to be in this game, meaning they don't need to constantly change aspects of the game based on their instructions.
    - The team is obviously a lot smaller, so there won't be people coming in and completely redoing previous work wasting a ridiculous amount of time and money.
    - Portions of the budget won't be wasted on stupidly detailed things like each character havin their own unique set of footsteps sounds.

The following is from Yu Suzuki himself...
"Sony and Shibuya Productions have been wonderful partners because they believe in Shenmue and want to see the best for the fans and the game. Their investment in (and support of) Shenmue have helped to realize a sequel that will stand proud with its predecessors. While it is not business practice to discuss the specific details of such arrangements, I can say that with their assistance on the production and marketing end, and in Sony’s case with some publishing support as well, Ys Net is able to use more of the money we collect through Kickstarter purely for Shenmue 3’s development. It is also important to note that your funds are going strictly to Ys Net for development of Shenmue 3 - Sony and Shibuya Productions are not seeing a cent of your Kickstarter dollars."
So there you have it. There is more that was said, but this answers all the questions and clears up all the bullshit. Not a scam, Sony isn't getting money from the kickstarter that is being contributed to.

    • @ianthegamer6095

mauricetheme Dont think people stated that. They were saying Sony was helping with the funding... Which proves to be the case. There were many people saying that the kickstarter was a scam, that Sony was fully funding the game and that they money from kickstarter was going to Sony themselves. Why some of the so-called "Shenmue Fans" are forcing to get physical CD for PS4? and I noticed one of those people asking 75 dollar in pledging for physical CD + T-Shirt, really?? it is simply "preordering". One thing that's amazing to me about the Kickstarter is that the average contribution is about $80, so $20 more than a AAA retail release.
On the subject of emulation, there are a couple options. NullDC is probably the best known and most functional Dreamcast emulator. I've played both games with it. It has plugins for the VMU as well as the ability to use an Xbox 360 controller. There are some sound and video glitches (some of which I'm sure are related to my laptop's AMD GPU), but the games are absolutely playable. The ROM I have for Shenmue II is one where the creator spliced in the audio from the Xbox version of the game, so it runs with English dialogue. Overall, it takes a bit of time and effort to get everything configured within the emulator, but I'd say it's worth it.
There's even a Dreamcast emulator on Android called Reicast. If you have one of those NVIDIA Shield portable consoles, it works beautifully. Again, the setup is a bit confusing, but being able to play Shenmue in the palms of your hands is really something.

I haven't played it yet but from my research it IS compatible with 360 and I've even heard it resolves a few performance issues it had on the original XBox (I think I heard something about it sometimes locking up or just taking a long time to load during what would've been a disc transition on Dreamcast).
I really wish I would've been able to get the first game on Dreamcast-I'd considered it even though I don't own one at the moment-but I was short on cash as it is and I'm certain the prices have already inflated further since then. I've got the movie disc though and I already beat the game back in the day (although I'm fairly certain I used some cheat codes at the time). I never managed to get all the way through the second one before I traded it in so now I've got a second chance to do so.
At any rate, the stretch goal I'm most fearing right now is the "Infiltration Mission", that was my LEAST FAVORITE part of the first game-I absolutely HATE shoehorned-in stealth missions that send you back to the beginning of the level whenever you fail, perhaps a bit more so with Shenmue because if I recall correctly you had to wait until the next night to make another attempt (or maybe that's if you fail x-number of times, my memory's a little hazy from time and repressed traumas).
I like stealth when it's done as an OPTION, or at least you have multiple ways to approach the situation. Deus Ex and Skyrim are shining examples of how I like Stealth to be done. That said, maybe they'll do it right, maybe the mission will be optional somehow. I can only say that if it can't exceed that goal by at least a couple steps I will be more than annoyed. lol

Adam, great work as always. I've always thought you looked like a Shenmue NPC.
Loaded up Shenmue 2 the other day and just sat at the title screen. I was thinking how bad the wait was between 1 and 2, then finally getting to that shenmue 2 title screen and jumping right back in, and I played both these close to their N.American releases. To think what it will be like to see the shenmue 3 title screen and play that thing. Holy shit.
To most of us here I'd say this is way bigger than Half Life 3. Way, way bigger. And if we get Shenmue 3 that DEFINITELY means Half Life 3 will come out someday.

SEGA would be mad not to do some sort of HD Remaster Collection at this point. With all the buzz the 3rd game is making, they cannot not get together with Suzuki to agree to a Collection with 1 and 2 to give people the chance to see what all the fuss is about as well as cash in on the buzz too.

Guernicaman it would be pointless because sega dropped out of the console race in '01 and the probability of them getting back in it and being successful is slim to none, but they can come back however but the money they need to round up to be able to stay in it is a lot after leaving for 13 to 14 yeara

i wonder how Ys Net's new deal with Deep Silver will affect the situation and how it will relate to the fears some people had over Sony's financial involvement.
We're told it will mean more money for development of the game, does that mean some creative control might be relinquished? doubtful, but i wonder what roll Deep Silver will fulfil given that Sony had already committed to helping with publishing? i haven't looked into it in detail yet, so maybe the info is out there.. ok i'll stop rambling now.

  • @kynikostashasch2218

If you're going the emulation route, I recommend playing the stock ISOs for shenmue 1 and the 99 minute/870mb CD rips of shenmue two with the japanese audio replaced with the english audio from the XBOX version, both work well with the usual dreamcast emulators and also on original hardware, however I'd recomend against playing the shenmue2 99 minute CD version from a burned disc as it's awful for your GDROM drive, instead look into getting a GDEMU or DC serial port SD card adaptor and playing it off there through dreamshell as that's much better for the hardware longevity.

Quick Edit: I hear SEGA is planning to make Shenmue I & II remastered in HD after hearing the sucess of Shenmue 3's kickstarter so you may not need to worry about emulation.
The best way to emulate Shenmue I and II is to emulate on PC using an emulator called "Demul". Demul 0.7 Alpha is by far the most accurate emulator for Shenmue but it is more demanding of your PC than the more inaccurate and glitchy NullDC emulator.
You'll need either the GD-ROM image (.gdi) or CD-ROM image (.cdi) file for Shenmue I to play it on the emulator.
However since Shenmue II was a much larger game than Shenmue I, the person who created the original .cdi file for Shenmue II ripped out all the civilian dialogue to make it fit onto 80min CDs. Therefore I recommend using the .gdi file for Shenmue II. Also if you want to play Shenmue II in english like the xbox version then there's an english hack available called the Shenmue II English 99min (.cdi) which has all the english dialogue from the xbox version put into the dreamcast version

    Hey Adam,
Man I can't believe this is happening; while I've never played the original Shenmue (I've been THIS close to getting it before, guess that won't happen for a while now thanks to price gauging after the announcement) I'm a huge fan of the Dreamcast and SEGA in general and it's incredible to see the community come together for this. If nothing else I'm supporting the kickstarter in the hope that one day, who knows, maybe SEGA will enter the console business again. If this proves anything it's that nothing's impossible,
    Keep Dreaming mate.

I actually sat down and watched this entire thing. Thank you for your thoughts, the information, and clarification. My current pledge is $29 just because I figured, "Kickstarter reached $2mil, I got my digital copy. I'm set." But now that I understand that "more money = better game," I'm saving up to upgrade to the $250 tier (really want that CD soundtrack) all thanks to your video. It's really the most I can salvage up after doing some budgeting.

Hey, Adam, I'm having bad feeling bout this. Imo, i'm feeling that Sony ain't gonna support it for long distance plus the Kickstarter name was already dragged through mud multiple times and then it might end as just an hype ad. I remembered myself when Yu Suzuki once mentioned at that time when it had great selling numbers on DC that he was planning on 7-16 sequels of this and yearly installments. No fret, i have seen longplays of Shenmue 1 and 2 and i liked it, looks like a timeless classic, but sudden involvement of Sony and this Kickstarter thing rly gives me suspicion bout something bad.

regarding the funding yeah shenmue iii isn't going to cost anywhere near as much as the first 2 games even if it is bigger than the first 2 games combined. For a start they are using a ready made engine (unreal) that is likely a lot easier and quicker to use than shenmues original engine which they built from the ground up which likely took a lot of the budget . Also judging by the few seconds of footage we have seen (which will undoubtedly improve somewhat granted) the game isn't going to be cutting edge graphically like shenmue was in 1999. Also in a Q and A, Yu Suzuki mentioned he was going to use some original assets from shenmue i and ii which will cut more corners!

  • @CallingAllNerds

    Great videos Adam.
I was one of the people that did think Sony were putting money into this, but now after watching, I admit I was wrong. Trouble is this actually worries me more. The fact that this game is total all down to us now scares me a little. I check the kickstarter every day and you can definitely see it slowing down. I'm worried it wont reach all the current stretch goals, let alone the other we haven't seen yet. I can't help but think we might get a watered down version of Shenmue III, which will be a massive shame. I would rather they did a version that had Dreamcast graphics and ALL the gameplay, than one with next gen graphics with a lot on content missing. You mention one of the future stretch goal was the arcade games, if we don't get that I'll be crushed. I used to love going down to arcades to play a bit of Space Harrier or After Burner, It won't be the same without it.
