Idea for a challenge: I know how to make a ship work in space only using gravity generators and artificial mass blocks for thrust, but it needs a script. Is it possible to do this without a script?
8 points of ground contact instead of 4 works better, or gives a smoother ride anyway!! :) I find the ground clearance on the wheel suspension blocks completely inadequate and stick to building my own wheels for rovers these days...
Not too long ago I started testing custom suspension. Probably the more impressive was independent suspension using hinges, worked really well. And I have heard of those triangular wheels and attempted to make something very similar in SE with four wheels... Clang wasn't happy to say the least
I'm terrified what you might come up with is you explore Space Engineers history with genuine tank treads. We've been trying to propel ourselves with pure clank almost longer than wheels have been out.
not too long ago I tested a Gear version of a Tank Tread, It worked out pretty successfully utilizing Rotors with Blast door style gears which actually pushed a Belt using Hinges, Blast Doors, and then small Heavy 2x1 Blocks. it worked fairly successfully however it required quiet a bit of tweaking initially to get it working effectively. It wasn't fast with Velocity but it was extremely stable with all types of terrain. however Smooth Landings such as Large Block Roads and such it was horrendous due to lack of friction. overall the test Id have to say was fairly successful and never required any wheels it was slow but very stable.
I recall doing this idea about a year or two ago, it was incredibly fun, I also did it with damage on and it turned out the key was as you found out bigger is better, but I hit a wall where at a certain point you can't go faster, because while in theory you can, because scale up for ever, at a certain point your wheels touching the voxels just cause the ground to explode like your crashing into it, very fun, I sort of ended up using a 5 star shaped wheel with static wheels on the end to provide grip and for their resistance to damage. It was a weird thing where small wheels were just bad, because of the rotor rpm limit and they just couldn't grip, but too large and the speed of the wheel (skin) would smash the ground because your imparting so much force. Long story short I think I was able to get them to around 50m/s at more, now I just abuse hovercraft (wheels with 0 friction) and just slide over everything at 90m/s where any wheeled craft would explode at the slightest bump.
Been a while since I played so I dunno what's possible anymore but probably having wheels with like 4 rotating landing gears that always face down that engage and disenguage so you have perfect grip would allow you to travel along any surface.
I recently got back into space engineers after I was browsing the workshop and found some mods I thought would be fun to play with. Normally I’ll make a new world, play for about a week, then stop and the next time I relaunch the game I’ll repeat the process. Now, I’ve finally made a permanent world that I’ll use, modded up(quite a bit) and I’ve been scourging UA-cam for info on conveyers, ways to improve building my large ships, and stuff like that. I don’t remember when I subbed to you, but I’m very glad I did because your videos have helped a lot with relearning/improving how I build my ships and bases(I’m using your thruster mod because like you, I hate making a ship and realize I’m short two to three large thrusters and just having to slap them on, making a brick)
Okay so what happens if you make those Wheels with the spokes a thousand blocks long would you immediately be launched into space at 500 m a second? That was the very first question my mind asked when I saw this combined with just watching your speed limit video.
@@Zer0sLegion But if still worth trying, even just for entertainment sake. Sometimes after wasting 3-5hrs on SE, you stand back and look at what you've done saying "What the hell am I doing?" xD
Thanks for this, was having trouble with a rover I built in creative. Got it built, started doing some mining, if was too front heavy and plowed face down into the earth. Copied it out and suddenly it wouldn't drive for a damn... Couldn't figure it out till you deleted your cargo containers. Turns out I had 50K stone in there lol
I think you just inspired me to create a new rover... What if we reversed this idea and decided that we need to multiply our wheels? What if you had hinges connected to your vehicle like you did earlier in the video, then you added rotors to those, and similar to your X shape design wheels, we put an additional four more rotors at the ends of your ex tires. Now you place wheels at the ends of each of the X tires, and make sure they're always spinning with rotors, and then for good measure we add in thrusters to the back so we always have forward momentum. How well do you think that would do?
I think you could improve your wheelless wheel by adding wheels. Wait ! I'm serious ! You couls add the 1x1 wheels at the tip of your cross to add friction. Either at the exact tip, or on either sides of the cross to make it end like a "T".
You showed a picture of a 3-wheeled thing meant to climb stairs. Why not take that as inspiration? Use the rotors to turn 4 wheels that are either locked in place, or just placed directly on the cross-structure?
Have you tried the mod Lifted Wheel Suspension? It made me hate wheels a bit less lol. They give like an extra block of clearance so you don't bottom out.
Well try a wider weel base and let them rotate slower like in real life it Should give u more grip and less bounce. it is like u driving on ice or mud if the "Weels" Spin 2 fast u dont have any grip in mud u dig yourself in and in ice well u know wat happends and here u bounce 2 much. u could also could give u more "Weels" with 45° differenz 2 the others sry 4 my bad eng have fun and keep going with your vids ^^

You might be able to place a rotor on a rotor to increase rotational speed if that might help

I've seen people use that to climb vertically but it's the slowest thing in the universe.

Nice to here it!
Do you really need wheels? You can make walking skis like the very first mars rover.
The idea of SE skis both fascinates me and terrifies me lol
I feel like slowing the wheels down might have increased the time for each wheel spoke to get a grip on the floor. Worth a shot?
I did try it and it does help you get up the slopes but not enough to get you up that hill

Idea: a hinged and landing gear design that turns “wheels” with landing gear on hinges with no braking power
That sound both very dangerous and very fun
This reminds me of how similar space engineers is to scrap mechanic.
