I think the "German plane" is a BF-109...and if it is, then it was actually known for being very durable and having really heavy guns, so the recreation was pretty on point I guess?
@@thesupreme8062 109 was more durable and had bigger guns the K4 being an example carrying a 30mm. the 190 was more agile having a better roll rate and lighter frame apart from the ground attack variant that carried multiple 20mm guns and heavy bombs
the COM should be in FRONT of the COL the closer the COL is to the COM, the more maneuverability you have (when using control surfaces, that is. Gyros make this point pretty null), but the less stable you are
In real life yes, but as far as the mod is concerned, it doesn't. Having it on top of each other means there's no pull in any direction so you glide in a straight-ish line and and your gyros do all the turning.
It much harder, but also much more fun. Add plane parts and aerodynamic control surfaces, of course with aerodynamics. Then don't use gyros. Once you build a decent plane and get a hang of it, it's insanely fun!
@@Zer0sLegion Well that could make it into a fun multi part video series then! xD Part 1 is figuring out how to get a plane to fly. Part 2 is figuring out how to fly the plane. Part 3 is actually fighting! Id honestly love to watch that trainwreck!
it gets more complicated than that in real aerodynamics, but in general having the center of lift behind the center of mass leads to you craft wanting to point forward and refusing to turn, while having it in front has the opposite effect. the plane wants to point backwards and will try to turn in the direction it is already turning. Normally you would want a bit of self-correcting even if it means you turn a little less, since turning too much will cause you to lose all your speed and crash. but space engineers planes have ridiculous thrust to weight ratios and cant lose control because gyros, so it barely makes a difference and they really don't fly like planes at all. The mod works well for cargo planes though. you get very good fuel economy and it takes far less thrusters to fly if you build a proper glider.
I think the fights on these planes would be more spectacular if they were without gyroscopes and it was necessary to make ailerons. In addition, as far as I remember, the behavior of the aircraft is very strongly influenced by the position of the engine relative to the center of lift. And so the video turned out to be funny, especially the fights :)
@@Zer0sLegion there's this mod called Aerodynamic Control Surfaces, and after testing it the planes are really maneuverable and behave pretty well with it
I kinda prefer the engineering part of the aerodynamics mod as you have to make your planes aerodynamic rather than just having blocks that do it automatically. Each to their own I guess.
i have done a few dogfights and the main issue is that gyros and thrusters are way too strong. the person you are chasing can just 180 and shoot back at you. there is no need to manage your speed and altitude since you can reach top speed in 2 seconds and fly straight up. in the end i barely use my aerodynamics and just fly the plane like a rocket. point up once in a while and gain some altitude, then point and shoot and dodge while falling a little until i need to reposition again. its not *not* fun, but its far from the kind of intricate dogfights you can get in a proper dogfighting game.
This is kinda cool! I wish Keen would add aerodynamics. I created a series of atmospheric fighters to combat SE's "physics". Start with the "wyvern atmospheric fighter" by marcusinfestus. You'll love it or hate it 😆 I've never tried any of them with the aerodynamics mod...
So I'm trying this mod out currently and bullt some kind of plane with center of gravity and center of lift/drag aligned, but my nose keeps slowly turning upwards D:
You can enable advanced drag indicators with a keybind, it says on the steam page. Also, the mod was updated right after we did this video and they changed a lot of stuff so it might be all different now. I know my plane still works, you can grab it from the workshop if you want.
We kinda did know what we were doing but it was more fun for us just to wing it and see what happened. Made for a much funnier video as well, especially for Psi's plane.
If i've learnt anything from this video, it's that crashing the the most effective weapon in Space Engineers... 💥💥💥

as someone who actually knows how to dogfight, this hurt to watch
you shouldve made a f22 raptor

"A railgun flew past me?
What a space engineers sentence
The rail gun idea has some logic. If it was something that had a higher fire rate so you could blast them away it would have worked better
Crashing into the launch ramp is the best way to fly.
Unironically, Psi plane few the best after hitting the ramp lol

From what I know, the center of lift should be a bit behind the center of mass. But I might be wrong, I've read about it a long time ago.

There's not really a way to do it without gyroscopes, the mod's physics aren't advanced enough.
