They brought Larry Bird to play versus the young players to toughen the young players up for the Olympics. Bird gave Jordan a chip on his shoulder and that was the absolute best way to toughen Jordan up for Jordan's whole career.

The back injury was in 1985, not in 1990. The injury continued to get worse year after year.
    So, from 1986...a MVP year...Larry had a bad back...in 1988, bone spurs....and a bad back....in 1990...the last year his back wasn't career ending....
Then Larry played 2 more years.. .with a career ending back injury...repaired achilles... broken cheek bone....etc.
    .
    And still could dominate.

If Michael is better, its because he was a great one-on-one defender.
If Larry was better, its because he was probably the greatest team defender (sneaking into passing lanes, etc). Or because Larry, more than any other player in the NBA, made every player on his team much better… by his pass first outlook, by his tough attitude, and by his relentless effort. Jordan would berate teammates (especially Kukoc!), Larry would say something that set the tone for the team, such as "we played like sissies" (against Lakers in championship… You best believe they didn''t play like sissies after that!)
IF you vote for Jordan, it's because he truly was the greatest scorer of all time. If you vote against Jordan, it's because he was the biggest ball hog until Allan Iverson came along!
If you say Bird, its probably because he had the most complete game of all time: team defense, shooting, passing, ball handling, rebounding, free throw shooting, greatest crunch time shooter of all time. If you say Bird, it's because his teammates have enormous respect for him to this day, and they knew to always be expecting a pass when playing with Larry.

In Larry's rookie season of 1979-80, he finished 4th for the MVP award. For the next 8 seasons He finished either 1st or 2nd for the award. That includes the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons when he continued to play with a very bad back and still averaged 29.0 ppg / 9.2 rpg / 6.8 apg while shooting 50-40-90 each season. Those were the first 50 40 90 seasons in NBA history. After Larrry's MVP 3-peat, Michael and Magic split the award over the next six seasons as Larry's back got worse and finally caused him to retire. Without the bad back, I wonder if Michael and Magicwoud've gotten all 6 of the awards.
Also, a lot has been made of the fact that Larry's Celtics swept Michael's Bulls 3-0 in the playoffs when they met in 1986 and 1986. Even though Larry is my favorite player, he had more help than Michael did. McHale, Parish, DJ, and Ainge were part of the team that went 50-1 at home that year, including the post-season, and won the NBA title. Orlando Woolridge was pretty much all the help Michael had. The same thing happened in 1987 when the Celtics were loaded, and the only real help Michael had was Charles Oakley. Imagine what the battles between those Celtics' teams and the Bulls' team of either 3-peat would've been like.

I wonder how he would fare in today's NBA because it's a lot different now as you can see by the blood on his back you can look up old videos of him getting his fist fights with the Lakers, rockets and plenty more. In those days it wasn't nothing but someone to just throw a punch at another man and hit him! They would just give out a couple technical fouls and that's it! Also in the game where Jordon scored over 60 points but lost in the end, Birds style of team play pushed Jordon to have to work so hard to score that new record. Bird made not only himself but his entire team a threat while Jordon was a bulldozer plowing through the enemy team with force. I think people forget that Jordan didn't start in the league until '84 and the other players on the Bulls were mediocre at best. He had to do all the scoring. But it's also true that he didn't start dominating until players like Bird, Magic, Dr. J, Jabbar, Gervin, Wilkins, etc., were older and almost of them had retired by '91 or '92. It also helped that the Pistons were nearing the end of their run as well. Joe Dumars had not shizz to give. He'd lean on Jordan all day long and keep him in check. If there was one thing Jordan hated - it was defenders leaning on him and covering him like white on rice. Dumars could do that AND shoot himself. So Jordan had to work both ends of the court. He got better on defense as his career went along but in those early years he wasn't exactly All Defensive Team material.

I know this is a bit late and all, but Larry Bird did have the wins. In the career win percentages, with people that played at least 500 games, Larry Bird is only behind Magic Johnson (most likely due to the fact that he missed all but 6 games in one of his 13 seasons for a total of 897 games). He is tied percentage wise with Kawhi Leonard, but also has over 250+ more games played than Kawhi (at the time of this comment).

You keep saying team, team, team…but Larry TOOK his team with him. His rookie season with no other changes he more than doubled the Celtic wins. He took all the players that came after him, and he made the team champions. Repeatedly. If we are to compare the two, Michael was never able to do that, nor anyone else. I love MJ. Top 3. Bird though…no doubt the greatest ever. The GOAT. Larry LEGEND
Also, principle matters, but Jordan respected Bird who came before him. Current fans and players should learn from that.

Bird didn't have DJ or Ainge or Walton or even a starting McHale (rookie) the 1st year they won the title in 1981--Bird takes bad teams to title contention, almost instantly. The Indiana State Sycamores were never even in the NCAA tournament and found themselves 33-0 in the title game with Bird in '78. Bird's college career was a 32-13-5--Jordan wasn't anywhere near that production in college--not even close.

Bird- only career all-time with 24-10-6. Bird Defensive Rating All-Time #61, Jordan #102 Bird also 1.8 stls and 0.9 blks/game. Bird beat Jordan 65% of the time and swept Jordan back-to-back in playoffs--Jordan never won one playoff game v. Bird. Bird was a better shooter, passer, rebounder, clutch, play through pain, 3-pt shooter, FT shooter, hustler. MJ was not a better scorer. Bird could give it to you any way he wanted, with either hand. Took Jordan 8 years and many retired legends to get to ECF. Bird took a BAD Celtic team to +32 wins his ROY year and won title in year 2. Jordan came to a bad Bulls team and they stayed that way until about '91. When Jordan left Bulls for a year in '94, they one 1 less regular season game.

Bird was 6-0 against Jordan in the playoffs ... Larry swept him 3X - Birds retirement season Jordan got his 1st ...
Bird has the 2nd highest winning percentage ever
His Rookie year as the only new player he took the Celtics from 29 wins to 61 wins he alone gave them the best record in the league
He was a leader from day 1 - the best choice - the best team leader from day 1
    His winning goes beyond playing
He was coach of the year
He was GM of the year too
Magic says Bird is the best ever player
Kareem says Bird is the best he ever saw
Michael knows the truth - Bird dominated him completely
I think because Larry is white, some folks don't like to look at him as one of the best - Larry cooked everyone ... everyone ...
