    I loved watching the Celtics-Lakers rivalry in the 1980s. Bird is one of the greatest players ever, right up there with Jordan, Lebron, and the rest. Even though he was slow and couldn’t jump very high. I think James Worthy said he would rather guard Jordan than Bird, because “Jordan will make you look slow, but Bird will make you look stupid.” Kareem said Bird’s most important muscle was between his ears. His incredible knowledge of the game, his vision of the whole court, and ball handling skills more than made up for the fact that other players were more athletic than him.

      In the 88 season, Jordan's statistical best, the Bulls did defeat the Celtics in the 2nd game of the Playoffs. But the Celtics still advanced, winning the rest of the games...it is more accurate to say that Jordan never had more than a token playoff win. I just want people to stop the lies about this. Jordan would've got whooped by bird if they fought first of all. Bird was a notorious bar brawler and bird was already a great and mj was still in college. But Jordan was smart, he has said numerous times he learned everything about trash talking and the mental side of the game from bird. Remember that Jordan never beat bird in the playoffs when it counted. He didn't win anything until birds body was completely failing (even though he was still putting up all star numbers, and was two years from retiring. Bird and Michael will always be tied at #1 in my opinion. Their drive and ability to fight through anything to win in an Era where there was so much talent every single team had at least one if not more hall of famers on it was incredible to watch. And they didn't need to shop for championship teams. They made them. Period. Jordan stuck with the bulls with no talent to help for 6 years before he got his ring. LeBron had to flee to Miami to join other hall of famers to get his.

      Facts. I like the idea of a tie at #1, but, personally, I think it's Bird/Magic at #1 with MJ at #2 because there just wouldn't be a league without Bird/Magic. They made the modern NBA, they made the league MJ came to dominate after 6 seasons trying. (I believe the highest rated basketball game of all time at any level is still the Bird vs Magic NCAA Final. My apologies if I'm wrong about that).
      If you make me choose between the two, though, I'm picking Larry Joe Bird and I think Earvin Johnson, Jr. would agree. Bird beat Magic and, yes, Magic beat Bird, but MJ beat Magic and kept the Lakers off the top perch until Shaq and Kobe in 2000. Jordan had already retired once and left the Bulls in '98. Meanwhile Larry was 8-0 against MJ in the playoffs, one sweep against MJ and a weak team; the second time against MJ, Pippen and THE 90's Bulls.
      Larry shattered his finger before ever playing an NBA game and says that his feel for the ball was never the same and he cut his career way short with frightfully painful, life long injuries and wore out the batteries with nearly unstoppable and unquestionably unmatched, indefatigable hustle.

    • @pookie717
      @pookie717 Рік тому +3

      @@cellohood I can't disagree completely but I can't put magic at one because as crucial as them saving the nba was, I don't factor that into my decision. I'm looking at their play, intelligence and toughness. And I think if you transplanted peak mj or bird into any generation on any team, they'd be dominating everyone. Magic, I think, would need a bit more talent on his team. Magic would definitely be my #2 or #3. Outside of MJ and Bird at #1, my top 5 is always changing. Magic, Kareem kobe, Hakeem, duncan and dr. J are always in that mix. LeBron I can stomach being in the top ten. But I have a tough time rationalizing a goat that can't win with the team that drafted him. Period. That's why Shaq isn't in my top 5 convo. The magic with him and penny was one of my favorite teams all time but they couldn't get it done. Making the finals just once and lost to Hakeem. Eventually heading to the Lakers and Kobe. If you can't lift a mediocre team to greatness, you can't truly be the goat. Just an opinion.

    • @cellohood
      @cellohood Рік тому +3

      @@pookie717 when you're right you're right. I'm being sentimental about Magic. (His career was also cut short and never had a chance to get a rematch against MJ) I can accept Larry and Michael as co-GOATS.
      That 80's NBA, though! Close your eyes and listen to the crowds; that noise is gone, storming the court is gone. There's loud beats that drown out the untelevisable sound of quiet arenas and a maximum security regime. Ads on the jerseys. Soft rule changes for offensive players, attitude technical fouls.
      The smack of Larry's head hitting the floor, the gasps, the thunderous roar when he came back. The Chief whacking Bill Laimbeer to the floor with one swat. Isaiah on one leg. Kareem's skyhook!

    The video I posted in this comment below may be a little bias. But stats, facts, and video don’t lie…so the bias doesn’t matter. I’m not hating on MJ by no means he was hands down my favorite player growing up…but I can step back from my own bias and recognize facts. Really MJ had been in the league a good while but didn’t really become dominant until after Bird retired…coincidence?…we’ll never know. But with all Bird’s injuries the fact that he could keep up with, and get the better of a “prime” Jordan even with Pippen says a lot on its own.

    For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play.
    At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go:
    Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics:
    Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88);
    All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88);
    Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012).
    Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons.
    Career averages:
    24.3 points per game
    10.0 rebounds per game
    6.3 assists per game
    88.6% free throw percentage
    49.6% field goal percentage
    37.6% 3-point percentage
    Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season

    Why is it trash talking? Bird told them what he was going to do before he did it, dared them to stop him, but they couldn't
    In the story that Byron Scott told, just remember who was on the court when Bird told them what he was going to do:
    Byron Scott
    Michael Cooper
    James Worthy
    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
    Magic Johnson
    and with all that star power they still could not stop Bird - Just like Byron Scott said - Are you f'ing kidding me.

    I know all you young guys say you fighting but that doesn’t make a difference to guys like him. He doesn’t walk away from fights. On the contrary he started a lot of them. He was 6’ 9” tall and maybe 225 pounds. And a bad attitude. You may think you fighting but it wouldn’t be much of a fight. Besides I find todays pros are really a bunch of whiners. Everybody is offended. Twittering back and forth like a bunch of little kids. Change the rules and you will get back to basketball the way it should be played. Hard and play like you don’t want them to get any points at all and the ones they do score they contested hard in your face. That’s basketball.

    The crazy thing about Larry is he really was nowhere near the most athletic guy on the court. in a sport dominated by super athletes he somehow managed to make athleticism look like a bonus not a must have.
