Your explanation of Hebrews 12 has touched me today. 10 months ago my son was called home to Heaven and it has been hard going to church without him there by my side. So many happy memories of us together in church, it is a very bittersweet experience. It brings joy to my broken heart to know that my son is worshiping the Almighty God with us! I never though of being in church as like being in court. But the same order is there if it's a good liturgical church. And buildings in Rome which had been courthouses before sanctioned Christianity became churches, even those buildings had been in the shape of a cross.

You're right about Cain and Abel - I would like you to flesh out that a little more. "Why should there be a division between your faith and your conduct? It is a wrong division, it destroys your faith, for 'faith without works is dead'....What wonder if Cain attacked his brother when he already slain his own faith? Why be surprised, O Cain, if your gift is refused by him who holds you in contempt?" Bernard of Clairvaux, sermon 24 on the Song of Songs , Detraction and Man's Righteousness.
Faith "without" (χωρις - apart from) works is indeed dead (James 2:20) and yet it is precisely a faith that is without (χορις) works by which man is justified by God (Romans 3:28). So how can these things be ?
True faith always produces works.
But we need to understand what faith is. And we need to examine why James appears to contradict the Apostle.
And we need to understand that these concepts are not Paul's, nor is it James' .
Indeed the Holy Ghost taught the distinctive categories of faith and of works throughout the Scriptures . And so, when we see the Apostle Paul discuss these points, we regard the fact that the church is built upon the doctrine of the Apostles as much as upon the prophets (Ephesians 2:20)
Now James was not an Apostle but his point is nevertheless Scriptural. And in fact James is obedient to Paul and teaches precisely what the the holy Apostle teaches in Ephesians 2:10.
For Paul who affirms that man is Saved by Grace through Faith and not of Works , further affirms that this is UNTO Good Works .... (Ephesians 2:8-10) .
So James is not in rebellion against the Apostle. He rather takes a concept well understood and uses it to highlight reality :
Every true Christian must bring forth fruits worthy of repentance, or else they are no Christian (Luke 3:8; John 8:39) Yet no one is justified by the deeds prescribed by the law for the Scripture has declared that the just shall live of faith (Galatians 2:16; 3:11; Habbakuk 2:4)
And this is precisely what the prophets taught. Consider Ezekiel 18:27, 28 and Ezekiel 33:16. These passages make it abundantly clear that THE WICKED person is justified FREELY...apart from works (by faith alone), when they repent and turn to God in true faith.
"NONE OF HIS SINS that he hath committed SHALL BE MENTIONED UNTO HIM" (Ezekiel 33:16)
He has sinned, yet God counts him as righteous, freely. And he does this on account of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:19)
"God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, NOT IMPUTING THEIR TRESPASSES UNTO THEM"
This is precisely the blessedness that David describes of the one who is justified FREELY, by Faith Alone (without works):
"Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile."
(Psalm 32:1, 2)
Conversely, The just (the righteous) who departs from faith and a good conscience, is also condemned by the prophet (Ezekiel 18:24 and Ezekiel 33:13; and 1 Timothy 1:19)
So we conclude that man is indeed justified through faith , apart from.worls. And yet is called to produce fruits of faith. moreover we learn that even this faith is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8).
And James takes the well known Apostolic doctrine, that man is justified apart from works and turns it on its head. And why does he do this ? James saw that lawless persons would twist this Apostolic liberty, taught by the Apostle Paul and stopped men from abusing it. And James agrees with Paul in this on fact (Eph 2:10).
Notice also that Paul uses the Inspiration of the Holy Spirit in citing God's own declaration of justification of Abraham apart from works from Genesis 15:6 . So we conclude that Moses taught justification without works by inspiration of the Holy Ghost . And Paul reminds that it was not written for Abrahams sake so much as for ours (Romans 4:23, 24).
BUT JAMES ...waits fully upwards of 20 years to justify Abraham "by works". For Abrahams offering of Isaac, by which he showed the world his faith by his works, was fully 20 years after Abraham believed God and was justified apart from works.
James' point then is simple. True faith always produces fruit. Albeit, even if the evidence is drawn from an incident some 20 years later !
And ... to quote James:
"O vain man ... faith without works is dead"
(James 2:20)

But you ARE COME unto Mount Zion
... ἀλλὰ προσεληλύθατε Σιὼν ὄρει ...
The writer uses the perfect tense here in Hebrews 12:22 ... προσεληλύθατε (Proseleluthate) , and it is simply wonderful.
Note: The inspired writer to the Hebrews does not say:
"But you HAVE COME".
But rather he says:
"But you ARE COME".
This use of the perfect tense in Koine Greek is the language of standing, it is the language of state.
And this writer to the Hebrews loves to use the perfect tense, which strikingly portrays current state and standing. Hebrews uses the perfect tense in other doctrinally important texts such as Hebrews 3:14 "You ARE become partakers of Christ" and also in Hebrews 10:22 "Having ... our bodies WASHED with pure water", which is a reference to Baptism and also an allusion to Ezekiel 36:25 and the fulfilment of it.
(According to Hebrews 10:22, it is not merely that we were Baptized, but rather that we ARE baptized that is emphasised by the use of the perfect tense. Our Baptism creates a state and a standing before God, as we continue in faith and God views us as "WASHED" (cf. John 13:10) )
The Christian IS COME and STANDS upon the true Zion, the Church of God.
This passage in Hebrews 12:22 is of course a quote of the twin prophecies of Isaiah 2:2, 3 and Micah 4:1, 2.
We note also that Hebrews 12:22 is the only place in the entire New Testament where these twin prophecies of Micah and Isaiah are referred to and this is highly significant. Wherefore ? Because chiliasm (millennialism) is categorically refuted in this passage.
Millennialism claims falsely and with no basis that "the coming of all nations to Zion" is a future, physical event in an earthly, carnal, and literal kingdom of God on earth with Jesus ruling for 1000 years. But there is no such event taught in the Bible.
The author to the Hebrews shows us all, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, that there is NO future millenium. There is no future coming to Zion that is ever disclosed by the Apostles and Prophets.
Rather, we learn in this text, that ....
All nations HAVE COME TO ZION. we learn this because the Greek perfect tense comprises both the past and the present present standing is based on past fulfillment.
God is now receiving Chinese, and Mastisos and Peruvians and Australians and Russians and Fijians and Egyptians and Cubans and Canadians and Italians and Georgians and Turkish and Argentinians and Cambodians and Indeed ALL NATIONS now and not in some future, imaginary millenium.
We ARE COME to Christ, and TO ZION and to God, and to the Spirits of just men made perfect and to an innumerable company of angels ... all through faith in Christ.
(And thus we see also here in this text that JN Darby, and Scofield, and Ryrie, and Walvoord and all other Millennialists are false prophets who would mislead precious souls away from the hope that is in Christ Crucified and Risen.).
Hebrews is a book that teaches that THE LAST DAYS began with the coming of Jesus (Hebrews 1:2) as the prophet by whom God has spoken (Deuteronomy 18:15-19). And this the coming of all nations to Zion IN THE LAST DAYS (Isaiah 2:2, 3) is shown to be fulfilled in the Holy Christian Church (Hebrews 12:22) and not in a future political kingdom in Israel (Luke 17:20, 21).
Hebrews is also a book that refutes the carnal security of Calvinism and semi Calvinism. It refutes the doctrine of an unconditional perseverance, and it's variations, which would teach that a Christian, once saved could never fall away and be finally lost (Hebrews 3:12-14; Hebrews 12:15-17, 25)
But Hebrews also teaches a faithful high priest who is able to Save to the uttermost all struggling Believers who come into God by him
(Hebrews 4:14-16; Hebrews 7:24, 25)

Is there any chance you could dig into Marin Luther's "Bondage of the Will"? I've just read the first 5 chapters and I'm struggling to understand the context of the arguments.
Luther's Bondage of the Will is one of the greatest books ever written, and I believe Luther considered it his finest book.
Bear with it, because it becomes easier to understand as you proceed with it.
The Bondage of the Will was written as a refutation of the popularised false doctrine of synergism that Erasmus was promoting on behalf of the "church".
Luther saw that synergism was at the very heart of what we call Roman Catholicism. And it is at the heart of virtually every reformed sect today, (even the Calvinists, who in the final instance rely upon man).
Luther correctly saw from the Scriptures that the will of man does not cooperates or assist in conversion. Rather, the very will of man is THE OBJECT OF CONVERSION. Thus the human will is not free. It is under bondage to the tyranny of sin and death. And it remains so until
Christ sets it free through the Gospel. And as Christians we find two principles (or "Laws") in operation. The Law of sin and death and the Law of the Spirit of life, operating within us (Romans 7). And we learn that in Christ we have been set free to serve Christ.
Others have tried to explain the doctrine of predestination and election , but they always fail to address the doctrine of universal grace. But Luther shows that there is an election based entirely upon grace alone on the one hand and there is also universal grace extended to all sinners , by which Christ has redeemed the entire world on the other hand. And Luther's handling of how Satan opposes and maintains his kingdom despite the mercy and grace of God reveals just how deep and utter our darkness is, until Christ gives us all light .......
Repent means to turn from evil. How do I stop sinning. I know I will sin again. Most likely the same sins.
Abel's blood for vengence pleaded to the skies, but the blood of Jesus for our pardon cries.
All of this is pure foolishness to those who are not yet saved. I think the Holy Spirit must first convict a person of sin before this even begins to have any meaning whatsoever or at all.
