I've thought about this alot, why Elvis was bigger than Jerry Lee! Talent wise, I think Jerry Lee was better, and he was a better pure rock n roller, but Elvis had the looks, swagger, and charisma that nobody else had, plus Elvis did all those movies, and he kept his dirty laundry out of the public, which Jerry Lee never did! Had the public found out that Priscilla and Elvis when they first met, and had Elvis not secluded himself behind closed doors all the time, keeping his private business secret, that might have hurt his career badly like it did to Jerry Lee, when the public found out he was married to his 14 year old cousin in 1958. Who knows, but in the end, Elvis was the biggest star in the world for most of his career, if not all of it, whereas, Jerry Lee was a world wide rock n roll star, but nowhere near the heights of fame that Elvis was/is!
I think he was possibly more naturally talented than Elvis and not shading Elvis. JLL’s legacy got mired in negative publicity about his private life. The more I listen to his music and the interviews I’m convinced he never got his due. Some of his live performances are jaw-dropping.
He is so drunk that he can hardly talk straight, but as soon as he starts singing his voice becomes strong and clear. Great song and what an amazing performance!
If Jerry heard a song one time he probably "played" it in his head a thousand. That's the way a naturally gifted musician is. Grew up listening to my dad playing and some people just have ridiculous talent, and an ear for music. Jerry was in a league of his own.
Yes. I know Jerry Lee heard it in plenty of those smoky bars and he could run through dozens of songs and play them in whatever key he had to. He was a mean Mother on the piano! Thank you for being here!
Sounds like Jerry Lee has had a few too many of what made Milwaukee famous, but he can still belt out a song & make his piano sing the blues like nobody can do better sober! All I can say is WOW what a great post and I appreciate the work you had to do to bring this to us! Now that is entertainment!
Mickey May Jerry Lee hit the charts in 68 with Another Place Another Time, and What Made Milwaukee Famous. He stare on top of the Country charts for over the next 20 years, and there is no doubt he was Country though and though
@@elvismemories52 Yet they never gave him a place in the Country Hall of Fame. Small-minded and unfair. They disapproved of his perfectly legal marriage, and I suppose he didna attempt to live up to the Country image. Sadly he'll never get in now because apparently you need to be having big hits, and Jerry Lee's days of that are long past.
A view from the recliner. Sounds like an old jam fest when entertainers would get together and do their thing. Elvis was famous for these. He would sing gospel and all sorts of songs. I'd love to just sit into a Jerry Lee session. You would probably here songs you've never heard in your life.
This is fabulous !!!!! I hadn't heard it till last night, Aug.1st 2014 !!! I grew up on Jerry Lee. he was much loved by my whole family. I fell in love again, last night !!
This is a sad song I lost my husband mar 2018 this song connects me to Ron I have played it a lot love it wish he. Would release it as a single God bless you Jerry Lee
He was apart of the inaugural class of the Rock and roll hall of fame, but he isn't in the country hall of fame which is a shame. It's well deserved and past due, but they're probably hesitant because of his controversial life. They just need to put that all aside and realize his place in country music which is still very prominent to this day.
Jerry Lee. What a great talent. I understand he has been ill. There are so many great talents. He stands at the top of the candidates. From Rock and roll to gospel to country. Only Elvis came close. I hope JL LIVES many more tallent.filled years for our enjoyment.
For many many years he remained a unique virtuoso ___ rock and roll __ country ___ blues _____ hard to put him in any one category __ one thing for sure he remained one of our great vocalists ____ he could sing a Ray Charles song or a Bing Crosby or a Hank Williams song ___ yes a jerry lee song with greatness ___ no matter what ___ his vocal greatness cannot be denied
Could be an act but.... He showed up once at Graceland after a few shots and told Elvis that he, Jerry Lee, was number one. Elvis laughed and said, "Jerry Lee, you right!"
No the drunk part is real.......went to 2 different Jerry concerts in Dallas, he was so drunk he didn’t know where he was or who he was....both times....his band and a girl...Linda Gail or Wanda Gail, I think.... had to do the show......not good either...but they tried......wouldn’t pay a nickel to go to his show again.....but I like his music.....
That is Mack Vickery standing next to Jerry in this picture. Jerry recorded several songs written by Mack Vickery and they were also personal friends up until Mack's death in 2004. Mack also toured with Jerry Lee in 1973-1974 with stage name Atlanta James. "Rockin' My Life Away " was written by Mack. Mack Vickery was an accomplished Nashville based songwriter who wrote several hits and also often collaborated with the late Wayne Kemp and the duo produced such songs such as "The Fireman" by George Strait.
thank you Paul for posting. what a mighty awesome voice then & still going strong now. JLL can sing any song & make it beautiful with his amazing voice. Beautiful song there is not anything that JLL can't sing & make it beautiful. God Bless JLL 7-5-19
Yes it’s a shame that so many numbers Jerry’s done like this didn’t make the album. Wonder if even had a say.. like Like others I’d never this before; top notch track thanks Paul
Personally I thought the Southern Roots Album was one of the weaker Jerry Lee albums--BUT this is a tremendous song!! I agree Paul- this should have been on the album!!
He's so drunk it's so sad when I here him he had to feel very alone he's lost a lot of close family members. But he still plays his piano.. so good and still sings this song great.....god bless you
Thanks, Paul. I must have been having an intellectual interlude (formerly known as a senior moment) with regard to Mack Vickery. I don't have the Southern Roots album but all I can say is that if this track was omitted, then the ones that made it on to the final disc must be sensational!
This around 72/73 during the Southern Roots Sessions, he was at his peak on alcohol and drugs. There was a lot going on in his life at that time and a lot of tragedy one after another.
What a find on You Tube! Not having heard this before I thought that it would be a JLL cover of the Buddy Holly song with the same title. Jerry's bluesy piano and singing are spot-on, remarkable when you listen to his drunken (?) banter immediately before he says 'Let's cut one!' The other man in the photo is Knox Phillips, son of Sam Phillips. Is this track contemporaneous with the album that Knox released a few years ago? It should have been included.

Good Lord. At first, he sounds so drunk that I expect him to screw it up completely and embarrass himself. But then - he just nails it like the rock n roll natural he was.
I had the privilege of seeing Otis Spann perform live twice in the UK and the first time was in a wee club in Leicester - I took the chance I had to talk with him. He was as drunk as a lord and could hardly string two words together, yet played like he'd never touched a drop. I'm still puzzled as to how these great performers can do this.
It amazes me at the artistry and professionalism they present to us while drunk as hell 😆 This cut is a prime example of how determined Jerry was... But at many shows he was slurring his words, but always right on key on that piano!
Second only to Elvis but never got the recognition he deserved!!!
I've thought about this alot, why Elvis was bigger than Jerry Lee! CAN'T HELP BUT LOVE THE MAN
He's drunk lol no way lol
@Opal Allen he is drunk, and there is a little brogue there, but mostly alcohol....
He aint drunk
He is a man, and just a man ! He was drunk and I've been drunk before too .but there is no denying his ability!!Jerry YOU ARE AWSOME !!!
MIITE BE DRUNK, BUT SANG THE HELL OUT OF IT DIDN'T HE !!!
Never drunk 🤣
"I ain't never played it in my life" ... "Rolling on 1". That's damn good for take 1 on a song he's never played!
Especially whilst well oiled on JD - but that's genius for you - he could still cut a track in one take - and perfectly first time!
Just shows the quality of musician he is.
Pfffft! I believe he was being sarcastic.

That's right
Jerry Lee is in his own league--by himself.
True king of rock an roll
Damn right! Lots of folks didn't realize it until he died. He is the real deal!
Thiis is pure soul hammered out .
Sounded like he was absolutely drunk in this, you can hear the pain in his voice, every bit of his soul pouring into the music, sad & beautiful.
But have you noticed how he cleared his voice when he started to sang?
When he gets behind the piano he's ready to work. Drinking or not 😁 welcome! 🎹🎹💜
Amazing. Never heard this before. First take and done perfectly. Genius
I'm sure he heard it on jukeboxes and radios,.but he could play any song
Thank the great Slim Harpo for the original! He was another amazing Louisiana musician. This is an amazing version.

Dam Straight !!! He was like that all the time in the seventies. He was showman !
Lolll yep
Surely one of Jerry Lee's greatest! Have 'fanned' JLL for almost 60 years & this is ALMOST as good as it gets IMO. 'Killa' Rules!
Jerry Sounds Good even When He Drinking And Play That piano That Why He Call The Killer
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 74yo Aussie fan.
God Jerry Lee is amazing & no one can touch his brilliance.
Great song! Killer is drunk when he talks, but sings sober, impressive.
he sings his best when he is high
@Opal Allen how'd it taste
I don't think he's drunk here. His accent was really strong most of the time.
Black balled
I love these with “chatter” on them, that lets us feel like we’re on the “inside” with Jerry in our hearts, soul, and mind!!!
I love first takes. Killer is famous for them!
LOVE this so much...had to learn to play it on piano. Those old-timey licks he plays on this particular song always get to me.
The one man standing is right, Jerry is a fighter to go on living, yes i love that one man standing will miss you when he is gone.
FANTASTIC VERSION. TNX KILLER
When Jerry Lee is grooving!
Very very good, should indeed have been released. Germain.
