Whether "Sukiyaki" or "Uei O Muite Aruko", the song's melody works perfectly for practically any lyric that describes a time in a person's life when their heart is broken. Kyu Sakamoto sang of the hard times in post-war Japan, Western groups have used it for breakup tunes...I could try to write lines for it about losing loved ones...and it all works, provided the music is beautiful and the sentiments are honest.

Finnish schlager singer Brita Koivunen has sung a Finnish cover, titled "Tyttö Kioton" (Girl in Kyoto)
The lyrics are quite heavily loaded with Japan gliches like shy geishas, blooming sakura trees and other tropés. The intention is not bad but it's just that age's (early 60s) cover product in Finnish folk-pop sphere.
Brita's cover is rather loyal to the original arrangement music-wise

translating lyrics is really difficult due to cultural differences. the implication of a song in one language, when directly translated literally, will be lost on a second audience. this is especially due to how different cultures experience and express emotion, since music is so emotional. even though this isn't an exact translation, it translates the concept of sakamoto's song to an american audience very well by rewriting phrasing to be accessible, and altering the emotional language to match western emotional concepts.

    It's all because of you,
    I'm feeling sad and blue
    You went away,
Now my life is just a rainy day and I love you so,
    How much you'll never know
You've gone away and left me lonely.
    Untouchable memories
    Seem to keep haunting me
    Another love so true,
That once turned all my gray skies blue
    But you disappeared,
Now my eyes are filled with tears
And I'm wishing you were here
With me soaked with love all my thoughts of you
Now that you're gone I just don't know what to do
    If only you were here,
    You'd wash away my tears
    The sun would shine,
Once again you'll be mine all mine
But in reality, you and I will never be cos
You took your love away from me.
    Chorus
Girl, I don't know what I did to make you leave me
But what I do know is
That since you've been gone there's such an emptiness inside,
I'm wishing you to come back to me.
    If only you were here,
    You'd wash away my tears
    The sun would shine,
Once again you'll be mine all mine
    But in reality,
You and I will never be cos
You took your love away from me.
Oh -- Baby you took your love away from me.

I loved Kyu Sakamoto's original. I don't usually like cover versions , but this is fantastic.

original, but this is still a wonderful job by these guys.

These guys are awesome! I've read several "translations" of the song, similar in mood, but different. But I found lyrics in an OLD fake book - and they were the saddest lyrics I've ever heard - or read! I took it to be about a young girl in Japan whose lover has left forever - maybe being sent back home after deployment. She knows she'll never see him again, and will spend the rest of her live in lonely nights. Songs like this always make me cry.

Came here because of my Japanese friend.😌 Thank you 😘. The song is quite sad. This song is for someone who is longing for his/her someone he/she loved , but I like the song. 🙂 Seems like when I hear this song I can remember my japanese friend.☺Thank you. I hope you can read this my friend.

Finally! I'm not crazy! I've been hunting for these words to this for so long and all I got was the Japanese into English which is not the version that I know from my childhood. So thank you, I thought that it was a Mandella effect and that i'd never hear these words again. :)

Great vocals & harmonies! I used to hear this song on the radio. I ended up here after BTS hit #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 as the second Asian artist to do so. I wondered who was the first Asian artist? It was Kyu Sakamoto who reached #1 on the Hot 100 with the original Japanese version of this song in 1968.
