  • Okay, I'm not sure I could do the Japanese words justice, so here's the English version. Hope you like it.
This was me using the Jewel Atkens Lyrics but trying to sing them in a Kyu Sakamoto style ... if that makes sense ;)
    Just to be clear:
I can't take the credit for the translation as I took that from a Jewel Atkins version. I think it would be so difficult to do a direct translation and to make it a reasonable song with rhyming couplets etc
There are a few English "Versions" out there, however I feel that this is the most accurate one at portraying the sentiment of the original (Note NOT a translation). To clarify this: I have copied and pasted this from Wiki: "The lyrics tell the story of a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears will not fall, with the verses describing his memories and feelings. Ei wrote the lyrics while walking home from participating in the 1960 Anpo protests against the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty, expressing his frustration and dejection at the failed efforts to stop the treaty. However, the lyrics were purposefully generic so that they might refer to any lost love."
I am still getting comments that this isn't a good translation, so here's a DIRECT translation:
Ue o muite arukoo I look up when I walk
Namida ga kobore nai yoo ni So the tears won’t fall
Omoidasu haru no hi Remembering those happy spring days
Hitoribotchi no yoru But tonight I’m all alone
Ue o muite arukoo I look up when I walk
Nijinda hoshi o kazoete Counting the stars with tearful eyes
Omoidasu natsu no hi Remembering those happy summer days
Hitoribotchi no yoru But tonight I’m all alone
Shiawase wa kumo no ue ni Happiness lies beyond the clouds
Shiawase wa sora no ue ni Happiness lies above the sky
Ue o muite arukoo I look up when I walk
Namida ga kobore nai yoo ni So the tears won’t fall
Nakinagara aruku Though my heart is filled with sorrow
    * Hitoribotchi no yoru For tonight I’m all alone
    (whistling) (whistling)
Omoidasu aki no hi Remembering those happy autumn days
Hitoribotchi no yoru But tonight I’m all alone
Kanashimi wa hoshi no kage ni Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
Kanashimi wa tsuki no kage ni Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon
Ue o muite arukoo I look up when I walk
Namida ga kobore nai yoo ni So the tears won’t fall
Nakinagara aruku Though my heart is filled with sorrow
    * Hitoribotchi no yoru For tonight I’m all alone

I loved this song since I was a small child growing up in a polio hospital for crippled kids. I'd close my eyes in my bed and pretend I was in a faraway room in Japan. Brings tears but a warm feeling too. ⚘❤💯 Thank you absolutely beautiful.

Lovely story, thanks for sharing it. Joni Mitchell contracted Polio as a girl and rather than let it stop her, she changed the guitar tuning so that she didn't have to play barred chords. This gave her that unique sound. It's stories like that which remind me turn my disadvantages around.

@@petertaylor3600 Many thanks Peter. I think my worst thing is "self doubt" I do gigs ALL the time these days, and every time someone comes up to me with a compliment, I still hear in the back of my mind the time this guy coming up to me after a pub gig when I was 16 and said "you're sh$t". I've now stopped believing that, but it does surface ;)

:) Many thanks. Yes, sometimes simplicity works better than even orchestration. Look at Hey There Delilah for example where the guiter is doing exactly the same as mine and that is ALL there is, and what a huge song that was! Or over the rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole where it's just him with a ukelele doing a very simple "chum chugga" rythmn ... amazing how it can accentuate a song by simplifying things. ua-cam.com/video/5FQQRYVhIVA/v-deo.html

Here are the actual words to what Kyu Sakamoto is singing...
Ue o Muite Arukō (I keep my head up high) ”Sukiyaki”
I keep my head up high when I walk
      So the tears won't fall
      Remembering those spring days
      But tonight I'm all alone
I keep my head up high when I walk
Counting the stars, but they are blurry
      Remembering those summer days
      But tonight I'm all alone
Beyond the clouds, there is joy
Above the sky, there is joy
I keep my head up high when I walk
      So the tears won't fall
      I walk and I cry
      For I am alone tonight
      Remembering those autumn days
      But tonight I'm all alone
Behind the stars, there is sorrow
Behind the moon, there is sorrow
I keep my head up high when I walk
      So the tears won't fall
      Remembering those spring days
      But tonight I'm all alone
      But tonight I'm all alone

I came across Sakamoto after watching an episode of Mayday. I fell in love with his song, though unfortunately didnt know what he was saying. Then, with luck, I stumbled upon this English version. Not only are the lyrics so beautiful, but actually prefer this version to the original. I find David´s voice so soothing, I could listen for hours. Regarding Sakamoto, I thought his whistling was awesome. R.I.P

Awww many thanks :) Sadly, I can't whistle at all ... I can play most instruments just not the one every one else can do :(
