I've struggled with mouse shoulder for almost a year now, and visited a physiotherapist that gave me exercises do to but I feel like they didn't help and maybe even made it worse. After I watched this video, I'm now only been doing this exercise for a week because it actually feels like it helps. I haven't had nearly as much pain since I started doing it, it feels better every time after I did the exercise. A game changer for sure, thank you for this.

what kind of exercises we talking here?
also if u experience it during night and morning, its due to ur shoulder popping forward. practice better sleeping posture catered to assisting ur arm. also DO NOT sleep on ur side the arm is on, that pops it way way forward and puts ur whole weight on ur arm, which rly is a lot worse for recovery
sleep on the other side if u have to, just not on ur aching arm

Furkan Şenyurt wow that’s a long time to play. Hope you got paid or paved a path due to it. Without theraband, I would suggest laying face down and lifting your arm out to the side with your thumb pointing toward the ceiling. Hold for 10 seconds. It will be difficult bc all those muscles are weak. Do it on the opposite side to get a comparison so you have a baseline to work towards. 10 sec holds for a total of 10 reps untold the symptoms resolve. Your elbow should also get relief from this.

I have played guitar properly for 15 years and never had a problem. Two years at my full time job and this shoulder pain has become a part of my life. Thank you for this knowledge. I also read that using the mouse/trackpad for even an hour a day can keep making this worse. Is that true?

    • @CatalystPT
      @CatalystPT  5 років тому

William Olivas mechanical tissue damage is a result of either trauma, prolonged posturing and finally repetitive movement. Using the mouse or the track pad would fall under prolonged posturing and since you’re probably spending more time mousing than playing chords it has now affected you. Any posture lasting more than 20 minutes over a period of time can be detrimental to tissue if the person does not actively counter that posture with resistance training. I suggest investing in resistance bands if you plan on continuing to use that mouse or trackpad. Thx for watching!

Out of desperation, I found this video. Using the mouse is when it aches the most. I'm going to chiropractor, massage therapist and physical therapy. All have helped to some degree but nothing keeps it from coming back. They have all helped correct my posture, forward leaning head and spine issues. However, the PT prescribed this exercise but he also had me doing the stretching ones that you showed not to do. It is amazing that once I stopped doing those and did more of the band exercises, I'm feeling so much better. Thank you!!

  • @magicmulder

For me the biggest improvement was to ditch the mouse altogether and use a large trackball and a gel wrist rest instead. All the issues I had with wrist and fingers went away and didn't come back. Even for long gaming sessions with lots of mouse input it's a game changer.

Pro tip: Especially tall people listen up. A lot of the back pain is due to the arm rest bumps against the desk side. So, you're forced to lower the chair with your arms dangling. The easy DIY solution is to take two hand towels, roll them in bandanas, and tie them on top of the armrests. Of course you'll have to experiment with different thicknesses to get it just right.
The guy is right, though, you'll definitely need to start working out your back muscles.

This video helped me sooooo much, I had been suffering from the dreaded mouse shoulder from working long hours and not having an arm rest, I literally had this pain for months till it got to the point where I couldn't work for 30 min without it coming too painful to carry on, I saw a Chairo practitioner which relied the pain a bit but what they recommended ( using a big on the floor for the upper back roller ) had some relief but it would come back with vengeance, I then had to take time off from work as it got too bad. I rested it a few days till the pain lessened then did the exercise with the thera band, first just 3 x 10 1 day , then 3 x 10 2 times a day , now 3 x10 3 times a day, I also had a tight shoulder at the front so did chest stretches to loosen that and honestly its more or less gone, I have been starting to work again in short periods and no pain and an planning to slowly build my work time up again with taking regular breaks and continuing building the muscles up, I also bought a left handed mouse so if it feels tight I can switch for a while, but thank you so much guys this video has helped me so much after having pain for nearly 6 months!!!

Posture my friend. posture and ergonomics..... check 1HP's Guides
ur not going to fix anything if u simply walk back into the irregularity that caused/causes it in the first place
of course u feel better when u havea couple days away from ur desk, duhh mate
we call this RSI.= repetitive strain injury
especially if ur at ur desk 'constantly?' yikes
if u do ONLY Theraband stretches every 6minutes ur only going to tire ur shoulder out, and fall into a cycle, the Theraband is not magic after all,
u need to strengthen ur overall body physically, and engage in better posture so ur less prone and more resistant to said injury
and Allow more proficient recovery time

Pain in the lower shoulder blade is indicative of dorsal scapular nerve pain. It hurts!! You have to take time out of your day to raise your arms over your head as well as the exercise I show in this video. Raise your arms up the door frame in your home and reach as high as you can to use your upper shoulder muscles. Downward movements such as chopping vegetables will aggravate dorsal scapular nerve pain. Strengthening your upper and posterior shoulder girdle muscles will eliminate it.
