I've lived here since 2007, and used to get along well and have friends here. That changed dramatically in 2015. I wore a shirt that had a photo of Bernie hugging a cute fluffy cat. No slogans, no symbols, just that sweet pic. I've been shunned and hated ever since.
I live in S. California but our small community of about 300 people is a pocket of maga madness. I moved here from Texas 22 years ago and still have a Texas drawl, so they were shocked and angry when they found out about my egalitarian views. I've expressed my opinion of the current Texas governor (he's evil and is ruining my birthplace).
Unfortunately, most of the people who also believe in progressive change and preserving democracy like I do, avoid me as soon as they hear my drawl. They assume things about me that aren't true at all.
I've been told by magats that I'm wrong to go against my "heritage". They know nothing about my ancestors. My great-grandparents were socialists who left Germany and came to Texas in 1870 to build a community of other German ex-pats. They established several charitable organizations along with other immigrants to ensure that everyone had food, shelter, and assistance during hard times. My great-grandfather was an architect who built many homes, churches, and businesses with his skilled workers, many who were latino and former slaves. Some of his craftsmen went on to start their own businesses. Several sons of my great-grandparents married Mexican women. I think when they met these beautiful women who were family-oriented and multi-skilled at art, music, wildcrafting, natural healing, and cooking, they were smitten! Just imagine tasting Mexican food when you're used to sausage and potatoes. JK, German food is good too, but I loved the variety of our family reunion feasts.
On my mother's side of the family, her own grandmother was full Cherokee who raised my mom's mother on a reservation in Oklahoma. My mom was orphaned at age eleven, in 1931, during the Depression. Her father's family were all white and refused to help my mom and her siblings because they were considered "savage half-breeds". She and her siblings grew up in an orphanage sponsored by the Masons.
My Mom would be called a "social justice warrior" and "woke" by right-wingers now. Mom loved MLK and taught me that race is an artificial concept created to create conflict and disparity. She told me there's only one race, human.
I'm grateful to my parents for their wisdom, but disgusted with some members of my family who have chosen to forget what we were taught. My brother joined the trump cult, and hasn't spoken to me since 2015. He's told other family members that I'm dead to him, but won't explain why.
I keep hoping that some of my family has a change of heart and speaks out about the brainwashing, but they seem to only get worse. A cousin's son is sitting in Federal Prison right now because of his actions during Jan 6th. The guy lost his good job, his home, and his wife because he joined the cult, but some of my family consider him to be a hero.

I applaud Pam Hemphill for her recent actions. It's difficult to own up when we've realize we've been manipulated and lied to, and encouraged to break the law under false pretense. I agree that this is a time for us all to look honestly at what we have done and admit our own failings, and forgive them. We all make mistakes, and we can always find some way to atone for them.
I wish her well on her healing journey, and I am convinced that her turn around in realizing she had allowed herself to be brainwashed.and act against her better/higher nature/self, and to chart a new course, will be huge in her healing process. I hope many learn from her story and I take heart in the higher level light she had brought into the world through her changes.

It's not fair that convicted felons got lighter sentences than her! This 70-year-old grandmother only committed a misdemeanor. Some felons dressed in tactical gear, who cached weapons and planned the insurrection for months in advance only got home detention and probation! They should be resentenced to serve prison time and community service. This woman is genuinely sorry because she has publicly spoken out against Trump, unlike others who only feigned remorse, such as Pezzola. His sentence should have been increased after his seditious outburst in court. There should be justice for all!
