    You should make 'How would I make it better' into its own series, maybe focusing mostly on classic games or new ones.

      I didnt say that i thought the game did a good job of rewarding the player, i simply wanted to state that it would have been nice of arlo to mention that there is a reward even though i agree that its not a very rewarding one ^^

      It seems like it would go right in hand with the fact that snakes shed their skin. You're using one skin, select another, BOOM, snake climbs out of his old skin and has the new one on! That would be such a nice touch!

    I'm absolutely enthralled with Snake Pass. It's quite hard to play but I'm having fun with it and I just found it so charming and nostalgic from its style and soundtrack. It's like a game from the 90s; You just don't get games like these anymore. Really hope we see more of them in the future.

    That's how Rayman Legend does it. The main collectibles in the game have a tether system that will bring them back to their original position if the player dies before reaching a safe platform.

    • @Buglin_Burger7878
      @Buglin_Burger7878 7 років тому +3

      Its worth mentioning that was for single player because of infinite lives multiplayer.
      It is even more worth mentioning it was for the coins... which only gave lums, which weren't major.
      The Teensies did autosave if they were for completing a room, but otherwise would need to be obtained if you die after getting them.
      (If I remember this all right)

    I also recently completed this game.
    I actually really liked it (aside from a wonky camera in tight spaces), but I can easily see this game being very divisive. It's a big love-it-or-hate-it game, not much space in between. I really wish there was a demo so people can try it out and see for themselves if it's something they'd enjoy. The controls take a while getting used to, but once you do slithering up poles and wrapping yourself over precarious pits is super fun. I'd say the controls are as adequate as you could possibly make them for a complex task as controlling a snake, but I can see them frustrating other people as they are really tough to wrap your head around at first and require constant attention.
    Overall it's a fine game and brilliant concept, but I'd love to see a sequel that fixes some of the issues and expands on it. A concept as cool as this deserves a chance to shine.

  • @Gnoggin

    So would you say it wasn't a Solid Snake?

  • @NemesisTWarlock
    @NemesisTWarlock 7 років тому +18

    Poor Noodle...
    I really, REALLY hope Sumo Digital go back and make a sequel to this that's more expansive. The concept and core gameplay is sound, it just needs a bit more in the way of meat to the game's content (as you mentioned, collectibles that DO something) and some control tweaks to make the snaking a bit more effortless (oh, like, say, an auto-slither powerup that's slower than slithering side to side manually, but it still faster than going forward? )
    A great start to hopefully a wonderful little franchise, imo :)

      @Artista_Frustrado 7 років тому +27

      yeah, but "All or Nothing" rewards aren't worth collecting unless you are a completionist & even then is not that much of a reward

    • @JokerFace090
      @JokerFace090 7 років тому +3

      The reward is doing it. Like figuring out a puzzle in a traditional platformer. I feel like people have become corrupted by mobile games. "Oh, everytime I complete a level I get all these trinkets and bobbles (That don't actually do much)" Are the levels fun? "Uhhh, I finish it and I get gems to unlock new skins in the store"

    • @Artista_Frustrado
      @Artista_Frustrado 7 років тому +6

      wow it took you two months to write that, also no, is not "because of mobile games" sometimes having rewards in between do help to keep more motivation than "you did the thing again" because most completionist bonuses aren't "the reward is the puzzle itself" but rather "the reward is doing the puzzle again but now do it this way" and most importantly they're a checkbox

  • @pbjms100
    @pbjms100 7 років тому +16

    Completely understand all of your complaints, but I only agree with the camera (which is truly terrible). I absolutely loved the game otherwise! I actually really loved the controls and never seemed to have an issue with the checkpoint system - if anybody out there is interested I definitely recommend it!
    Also, (SPOILERS FOR 100%ing THE GAME)..
    Getting all of the coins and orbs in the game unlocks a new 8-bit skin for Noodle and Doodle, though it's just cosmetic it's really fun to use.

    !!! You reviewed it with a negative score how dare you it's the best game ever snakes are so fucking cute !!!
    Nice review, and I fully agree with you. I might have enjoyed the game much more, but your criticism is more than valid (and it aligns very well with my own). I didn't have as much of a problem with the checkpoints, but I don't think I'll bother with the collectibles either unless I come back to the game later after beating it.
    As it is, I think it's a wonderful idea executed with a few too large-scale flaws. I really hope the game does well enough so they can return to this and do more akin to it. Snakes as platforming heroes are just so novel and cute that I just couldn't help but buy this one. And I do want more despite my semi-lukewarm opinion of the game.

    Ok. This is something.
    I had to stop the video.
    I happened to get Snake Pass as well on the switch. But I had to put the game down after 'beating' the first level. I was getting dizzy. the next day I picked up the game and it wasn't much time until I was getting dizzy again.
    I think I understand why I'm getting dizzy, but sadly that actually means I have to return the game.
    If you play Portal with Director's Comments on, the narrator comments on betatesters getting dizzy after completing difficult puzzles in a row - so what they did was place smaller puzzles to let the betatester's brain "recover" from the effort without breaking immersion.
    You couple this piece of knowledge with the controls and the camera of Snake Pass (I have to play BotW with both camera axises inverted)...

    I think you're being too hard on the controls. I think it's a case of them just being different from other games (not worse). Playing snake pass puts everyone back to that 'never played a game before' state with their muscle memory - like somebody who's never used a controller before. After getting all of the collectibles, the game had become 2nd nature just like any other game.

      As a puppereer, we generally use arm rods. They are two rods that you stick to the bottom of the arms and control with one hand. Its almost like using chopsticks the way you are controlling it. I don't know why your asking puppet questions though in an Arlo video. He's just using his hands...

    Thank you for your thorough review. With the exception of relative turning - and why the heck DOES he decide to turn a different direction simply because his body is pointed a different direction now than it was a second ago?! - you covered every one of my complaints with this game.
    There really ought to at least be demos for all games if they aren't going to allow refunds. I would've never purchased this game if I'd been able to personally experience its flaws before buying it.

    First time I think I disagreed with you about a game. I found the game an absolute joy to play, it has been years since I had to actually "learn" how to play a game. After you get used to "thinking like a snake" it just feels good to traverse each level, and the collectibles are just a way to convince you to tackle the trickier segments
    All in all, despite its flaws Snake Pass is truly something new, something that hasn't been done before and accomplished quite well. It is fun, challenging and flexes your gaming muscles in new and exciting ways. If I had to grade it, it would never be bellow a 7/10, even with all its camera quirks and sometimes frustrating checkpoints

  • @ZippyRagu
    @ZippyRagu 7 років тому +6

    I think the biggest problem was that you didn't understand how weight distribution works for a snake, or why checkpoints are essential.The physics aren't wonky. The checkpoints aren't useless. Calm down.

    The one thing I can tell whenever I click on an Arlo video is that it will be honest. It doesn't seem like you're just making excuses for things when you support something or that you actively hate something for the sake of hating it. It's really refreshing to have a clear mind on popular subjects nowadays, thanks.

    • @Oniphire

      The camera, head lift, and relative turning are problematic. As Arlo says the camera needs to be moved at the same time your fingers are occupied. Head lifting should be analogue rather than digital but that's not possible with the Switch's controls so another method should've been implemented. Relative turning is a huge hassle. Why does Noodle turn left when I hold right just because the camera has turned beyond some invisible line? Even if he started off by turning right when I was holding right the second his body's position crosses that invisible line he suddenly starts turning left. While certain games like Octodad purposely have difficult controls I think Snake Pass's controls were just poorly implemented. The physics puzzles of the game, not the controls, should be my obstacle in this game.

  • @TheStylishSpy

    What you describe with the mini checkpoints is very similar to what Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends gold coin collectables did, since they were often in hazardous areas overlooking cliffs or surrounded by spikes, the game would let you pick up the collectable but each coin would have an area of 'not-collected' which, until you pass beyond this radius, the game would just have the coin float next to you but wouldn't chime it in as you collecting it until you've reached outside this area, which was manually made depending on each and every coin, so it would mean that you'd collect the coin as soon as you were reasonably free of the danger that surrounded the coin such as making it back to solid ground or moving a distance away from the spikes. It was a really great concept and stopped you from feeling like you cheated for a coin or that a confiscation of a coin was unfair, as you may have killed yourself on the way back out, and touching the coin initially was only half the battle. And its just one of the many reasons Rayman Legends has earned its way as my second favourite game of all time and my 1st favourite platformer.

    The controls aren't for everyone, that's for sure. But the snake controls did feel pretty forgiving, and even allowed you to take unintended paths. If there was a collectible behind a tricky path, chances are there was a simpler way to reach it using a high ledge or a hole in the wall.
    The levels can feel incredibly short if you only go for the mandatory keys, it's almost a requirement to collect everything to extend the playtime. However, there *is* a completionist bonus for collecting all the blue orbs and coins, so it's not pointless to collect them.
    The final world does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. I really would have wished there was a set of final bonus levels unlocked using the coins that really challenged the player and pushed the limits of the snake physics

    I've been playing through Snake Pass myself. I can definitely understand the gripes you've had with the game (I had the same exact problem at 2:51 in that same section jfc), but I've still been enjoying it quite a lot.
    It's disappointing to learn that the collectibles don't get you anything, with the exception of collecting all the coins getting you a "lol thx m8" from the guardians at the end of a world, but I've been enjoying the pure challenge of getting some of them. It feels like a small accomplishment in itself being able to snake around a tricky obstacle and make it back to a checkpoint with new loot in tow. It feels like the collectibles *are* the reward for getting better and better at this unique playstyle and control scheme.
    The camera is definitely an issue that gets in the player's way from time to time. Quite a few times now I've had to completely halt what I was doing to fiddle with the camera for a good minute before I felt like I could safely continue on my way, and it's even worse when you're looking for collectibles in the water.
    No world variation is also a really big issue. I really hope that if this game ever gets a sequel, the devs use actual environments for the level designs instead of basic poles. I was actually really disappointed to find myself unable to scale the actual fauna in the game when I tried. I had myself wrapped around a vine hanging between two trees while looking for a coin in one of the first worlds, and poor Noodle legit got stuck on seemingly nothing. XP
    Despite those complaints, I'll say again that I've really been enjoying my time with the game. I haven't been playing it non-stop (unlike when I opted to revisit the Pikmin series thanks to seeing that platformer again), but it's definitely been fun. Playing like an actual snake has been a really novel treat.

    The thing with gripping is that the more contact points, the stronger the grip. Remember you said Noodle is made up of multiple segments? The more segment in contact with a surface, the stronger the grip.

  • @deldarel

    I like the way you made it better.
    My suggestion would be: the snake swallows orbs like eggs and spits them out on solid ground, how you see that you've collected them. Then that little bird following you picks them up and then you really have it.
    I'd also make the coins harder to reach, but also instantly saved. The places they appear in should be intended to leap off in order to get it.

    This game was a dream come true for me. For 15+ years I wanted a game where all you do is play around with snake physics and this game delivered that in spades. It's flawed though, a snake shouldn't really be falling off things just from sitting in a coil and more meaningful collectables would be nice but I still had a blast with it.

    Well, moving noodle around is something that you get good at through practice. I haven't had any of the issues with the gameplay that you mentioned in the video, so maybe it's a mather of how you tackle or handle the challenge. And challenge it's in itself the reward for gathering all the collectibles of the game. I love when I reach a coin in a very tricky spot because that gives me the feeling that I have accomplished a feat that a lot of people couldn't do themselves, even through hours of practice.
