    I think it's a telling statement on how chill the Kirby fanbase is that their actual response to this video seems to have been "Yeah, fair enough, those are all valid criticisms, here's some games in the series that did a lot better"...

    • @guyudontno7689
      @guyudontno7689 6 років тому +90

      Thomas Johnson It really is. It's kinda funny how the fanbase of a more casual video game series can be more mature and reasonable than more revered franchises like Mario, Zelda, or Metroid.

    • @rubenakaskrubby8676
      @rubenakaskrubby8676 6 років тому +15

      Guyudontno yeah like there are things I disagree on some areas in the video like the control stick and I sure watched arlo for a bit and the end just rubbed me the wrong way (but not as bad as people like Josh, Rodgerbase)
      O and some people in the comments which I do have some concerns about
      but I can say that the previous game before (robobot) was better I can say it's at least better then TD in a at least 5/7 arlo
      Cause I just see this have more personality that 3D world was kinda lacking in

    • @rubenakaskrubby8676
      @rubenakaskrubby8676 6 років тому +5

      But star allies think is just the kirby series tipping toes out of the 3DS era like we may see a redo of TD where the first game is okay but then the second one is the one everyone loves.

    I highly recommend playing Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe, and Planet Robobot. They're like this game but with better level design and better gimmicks. I still really liked Star Allies, but I'd still put those 3 above this one.

    Even most kirby fans found this game slightly disappointing. Please don't judge the whole series based on this game. Play planet robobot please it has 6 worlds, great level design, a great overarching robotic theme that affected the levels, music bosses and everything. Robobot is as good as Star Allies finale throughout the whole game. Arlo please. Play planet robobot

      +WiiManElite Actually, in the full game, the loading screens from the demo are replaced by significantly shorter ones that don't load tips in-between. It's almost as if the loading screens aren't there at all because the transitions go easily unnoticed.

      +WiiManElite True, it's very jarring. As an optimist, it doesn't exactly bother me all that much, but there really isn't very much excuse for it either way, and I could see why it could be bothersome for others.

    Now that you mentioned it, i can totally see this being played by parents WITH their younger kids. Depending on how old they are, they could be playing either as one of the support characters or be more proactive as kirby. Especially compared to some of the junk that passes as "kids games" nowadays, this could be cool for families with younger kids

      I bought this specifically to play with my 5 year old daughter, and she loves it. We generally only play for an hour or so at a time, and she likes to do the same levels over and over again, so the game length really doesn't matter to me. Still, I can see an older fan being upset at spending $60 on this game, thinking they were going to get an upgrade to what they were used to on 3ds. Nintendo should consider putting an intended age on their games as the try to expand their demographic.

    As a lifelong fan of the Kirby series, I understand a lot of disappointment individuals have with this game, myself included. I think HAL was trying to create something similar to Odyssey in it's easiness of pick up and play style. Yet unlike Odyssey, their focus was on the multiplayer aspect and, for the first time in a while, the single player experience was an after thought. Since I am definitely biased towards Kirby, I still enjoyed it, but there are definitely plenty of flaws that should be addressed before another Kirby title eventually makes its way onto the wonderful switch.
    Great Video Arlo!

      Gaming Diabetic : I played so many Kirby games since the 64 days.
      Crystal Shard, Return to Dreamland, amazing mirror, Canvas Curse, Rainbow Curse, epic yarn, and more
      They all play more or less the same way. The “new stuff” is never anything that would blow me away. Difficulty is always easy except maybe the last world.
      It’s to a point where I have to learn to expect every Kirby game to be just “another one to put in the bin”.
      Kirby air Ride was probably the last great unique Kirby game in my opinion.

    A lot of the things you bring up, such as restricted level design, complete lack of challenge and non-existent level cohesion, are simply not present and way better in the two 3DS Kirby games. If you felt the idea of Kirby was nice, but this game was a little lacking, try out Triple Deluxe and Robobot. They're in my opinion the best installments in the series.

    • @SonicMaster211

      JediWilli I still think Robobot and Superstar Ultra are the two strongest games in the series, with Robobot being the best.

      JediWilli you have a point, still didn't have the chance to play robobot, but between triple deluxe and return to dream land, the second one is far superior (although the 2.5d and the mirror were outstanding)

    • @KevinCow
      @KevinCow 6 років тому +9

      But it should be noted after his complaints about this game's demo, there is no option in those games to switch the controls to make B jump and Y attack like there is in Star Allies.

    • @nuehoujuu7503
      @nuehoujuu7503 6 років тому +28

      JediWilli I second this. Robobot In particular was my favorite installment in the Kirby series. Had some nice puzzles and some pretty well hidden collectibles, as well as a ton of neat references and callbacks to other Kirby games. And one thing I feel Robobot nailed pretty well, was it's story, even if I do wish there was a bit more of it.
      Star Allies in comparison is lacking a good bit that made those games great, and is higher priced to boot. The mini games it has, while fun, I find aren't as interesting as the ones found in TD or Robobot, or even Return to Dreamland. The bosses aren't all that challenging, even in this game's True Arena equivalent, and the adventure as a whole felt a lot shorter and not as interesting as some of Kirby's other adventures.
      Man those bosses.. I liked a lot of the bosses that Star Allies brought with it, though I wasn't entirely keen on them recycling some of them in the main game as they did here. Though, it was cool to see Pon and Con return here. Would be loved to see more callbacks with maybe someone like Acro returning, or having a battle against Twin Woods again. Instead we got two counterparts to bosses that we already fought that while they change things up a bit in their fights; one of which I feel doesn't change things up too much to stand out too much.
      Even as a Kirby fan, I don't feel that this game quite lives up.to the two main games that came before it. It's servicable, but doesn't quite live up to the expectations I had for it. But it certainly does do some nice wonders for Kirby lore.

    Kirby games are meant to be easy, but i really think this games just plays itself.
    Kirby Triple Deluxe was easy, but on the final levels, i really had to star paying atenttion to get the secrets and try to play good, and the final boss battle god it was incredible, it had a good difficulty, it was epic, and it was so satisfying to play.
    Kirby Star Allies had good ideas, but it just ended being not well executed, and yeah, maybe it gets more difficult if you dont play with the allies, but i dont find appropiate that i have to handicap myself to actually enjoy the game.

    if triple deluxe and planet robobot are anything to go by and you hadn't collected all the big puzzle pieces or done the bossrush modes, then there still might be a big chunk of the game you missed out on. by the way i really think planet robobot might be more of what you'd want in a kirby game being fun, challenging, and innovative

      My only problems with robobot is it felt shorter than even triple deluxe and the gimmick, while still much better implemented than triple deluxe or return to dreamland still felt like it made things a tad too easy.
      So I can understand where arlo is coming from with his review. I think if what he says is true, the game would definitely benefit from dlc like a hard campaign and/or longer and larger levels.

  • @Air21Man
    @Air21Man 6 років тому +15

    This is coming from a Kirby fan, and I think you are absolutely right.
    I think it is safe to say that Star Allies is lacking in comparison to the two 3DS Kirby titles, in possibly every area. It has about the same amount of content, yet costs an extra $20 because Switch. Not only that, but everything feels less developed and feels like a regression from the advancements made with the 3DS games. Levels blend together and lack identity, bad pacing makes the game feel incredibly short on top of how short it actually is, and then there were the recycled boss fights. In total, it made everything feel empty. Gone are the amazing minigames the 3DS games had, which all showcased unique ideas that eclipsed all of Kirby's previous minigames, and they even got eShop expanded versions. The puzzle pieces are also a step back from the 3DS titles. Each new piece is just so small and uninteresting on its own that you don't feel motivated to collect them. In comparison, the keychains and stickers were their own complete pictures instead of just a much larger picture split into pieces. The stickers also could be put on the Robobot armor to slightly customize it, which made collecting them far more enjoyable (the doodle series especially). As for puzzles, the ones in Star Allies just felt like obligatory demonstration rooms for friend abilities, and nothing else. Friend abilities were a great step up from the ability mixing from Squeak Squad, but the one-way nature of give element to weapon made the elemental abilities feel less special as a result, and I just ended up sticking to mostly weapon abilities with CPUs to give me my extra juice. The other friend abilities were also incredibly limited as well, with more than half of them just being a variation on Friend Throw. The big flashy final boss fight that is different from everything is actually somewhat common for Kirby games, but even then I feel like I preferred Planet Robobot's one more. You didn't even mention mechanics like the Piggyback system, which is likely because of how poorly it was implemented, and how little the game tells you about it. Personally, I don't think difficulty is the problem, but rather that the base content is too sparse and bland for any of it to really pop. I am a long time Kirby fan, and Star Allies is mediocre at best.
    What makes matters worse though is that this game was apparently rushed, which explains a lot of the game's shortcomings. Currently there are rumors that Nintendo is trying to rush the Pokémon Switch game(s), which has me deeply worried. If this becomes a pattern of new Nintendo, then I and many other fans will be greatly disappointed. I'd rather wait years for amazing games like with Breath of the Wild, than get one well before it is ready like with Star Allies. Waiting can be a killer, but there are plenty of incredible games already out there that deserve some love, and it'll give new games the time they need to become the hits we all want them to be.

    I will reiterate what everyone else is saying, in that Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot (especially Robobot) are so much better, especially in the creativity department.
    If you ever feel inclined to try another Kirby game, try out Planet Robobot. It's easily one of the top 3 games in the entire series.

    The only problem with Kirby is that TP and PR were both near to perfection being some of the best of the series. If they had followed the same level and difficulty design in those games and just added co op perfection would be a brilliant title. Still, I like Star Allies the whole magic of the game is the co op, I love to play it with my siblings and deserves an 8. No more, no less, a solid 8 out of 10

      I think it’s honestly an 8/10 myself, if you give it the effort of reaching the end game content that’s there. Otherwise, I was tempted to leave it feeling as a 7 for a modest score, until seeing what you unlock after the main game. Currently just unlocked the complete version of its boss rush mode, and hoping at some point to 100% it in order to get to that secret end boss. Something that does feel missing is the rest of the DLC character for the game of course, and it leaves the roster of playable characters/abilities feeling a bit short.
      But honestly the Kirby formula is a solid one. Arlo was totally right about the end game boss, it was entirely more engaging than the bulk of the rest of the game in how it was paced. The bosses were decent if not good enough.
      Personally the original superstar still stays as my favorite (ultra feels somehow like a lesser version mechanically), but I haven’t played the 3ds games yet.

      I haven't played star allies in full so I don't really have anything to compare to here but i'm not seeing what everybody else sees in those games design. I played through them both and they were really dull despite having some fun ideas backing them, both in part due to the really easy difficulty and the level design that in both cases only had a few choice interesting moments. I've played a lot of different platformers so my opinion is probably jaded by the challenges from those games, but nonetheless, while they are good games, they weren't doing it for me the way the games that came before them did.

  • @gagepiercy1061

    I would give this game a 9 out of 10 because I can just fight the bosses by myself and maintain some difficulty and turn the puzzle hints off. My only flaw for the game is that didn't do anything new. Also Co-op is very fun and this is probably the best multiplayer Kirby game.

      Triple Deluxe was probably the worst Kirby game I've ever played. It was so meh that nothing stood out. There was nothing new or innovative about it other than the hypernova, which basically made Kirby disgustingly op. The villains were bland and charmless, the level design was overly convoluted and annoying, and the choice of powers Kirby could get was disappointing. I actually skipped Robobot just beacause I was so disgusted by Triple Deluxe.

    Kirby Planet Robobot is usually considered to be the best Kirby game. There’s an awesome extra mode, sort of like the helper game, without the helpers, and the robobot armor that shakes up the gameplay in a great way. Probably a better Kirby game to start with.
    There’s also Kirby and the Amazing Mirror which is sort of an open world game and a 4 player game, but it’s for the Gameboy Advance, so multiplayer isn’t the main focus. I haven’t played much of this one though, so I can’t really say that much about it.

    Despite being a huge Kirby fan... ironically enough, this is the video that got me to subscribe to your channel years ago. I was really happy to hear the good stuff you had to say about the game, and basically every critique you had against the game, I mostly agreed with.
    The funniest part about this whole review though is that nearly every bad thing you said about the game, Return to Dream Land and the 3DS games did a lot better. They’re in the same style, but have more content, higher difficulty (even though they are still relatively easy until the post-game), in Wii’s case a hard mode that is exactly what you described, and (especially in the 3DS games), stronger level designs and creativity and more in depth subgames, with basically every good thing you said about Star Allies, at lower prices.
    I know you’re probably tired of hearing this from us, but if you like Star Allies’ gameplay but it wasn’t able to sell you on the series, you really should check out Kirby’s Return to Dream Land on Wii and Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot on 3DS. You can get RtDL for $20 on the Wii U eShop, TD for $20, and PR for $40 on the 3DS eShop.

    After watching the whole review, and as a die hard Kirby fan...
    This review is completely fair.
    I had a lot of fun playing this game.
    But I could also recognize that there were one or two things that could be tweaked to alleviate some awkward baggage,
    and while I didn't FEEL like something was always missing while I was playing, I could recognize that there could have been a decent amount more of something in multiple areas that would have pushed this game passed "just ok".
    But even with all that, a game like this was bound to happen at some point. All franchises eventually have a game that is sort of middle of the road that hopefully they realize that's what it is so hopefully they can push forward with renewed vigor. And for me, Kirby Star Allies is about a "high middle road", but middle road nonetheless.
    So hopefully after this ok experience the Kirby developers make a really cool, if not great Kirby game for the next entry.
    (Maybe even 3D? With Blowout Blast and Battle Royale being their practice runs of such an idea?😃)

    As someone who's been a Kirby fan ever since I was a little kid, playing Kirby's Adventure on the NES and being so enthralled by it that I've been making a habit of playing every main-series game since, I can say that Star Allies was a game meant for people like me, who have been with the series for a long, long time and not necessarily people who don't really play Kirby games that often.
    The return of the hidden big switches and power mixing combos, the return of classic Kirby Powers that haven't been seen in years and even some powers based on the original anime/cartoon series from the 90's/early 2000's, the hidden bonus stages using remixed versions of classic Kirby music from games of the past, being able to team up with characters from past games like Rick, Gooey or Marx for the first time in ten or even twenty years in some cases, the puzzle pieces unlocking images paying homage to games of the past and their iconic moments in their story/gameplay, keeping the control scheme true to the way that Kirby games have always played, while giving a few little tweaks here and there to make it more ease of life (such as having the option to instantly get rid of a power with a more complex button combo, or being able to hold down a single button for a few seconds, just in case you press that button by accident and so you won't have to go chasing after your power in a panic).
    This was a Kirby game for Kirby fans and Kirby veterans, it's so chock full of stuff that you can really only fully appreciate if you've been with the franchise since the very beginning. And for someone who's only had a passing knowledge of Kirby, a lot of this game's charm is going to be lost on you, which is a shame.

    I see how it is, Arlo likes the Wing-Ability, that alone proves that he has no taste whatsoever.
    ...Joking aside, I, a guy who'd call himself a hardcore Kirby-Fan, can very well understand some points you listed as negative.
    I agree that the game is a bit too short and that you don't have to go out of your way to find the arguably few collectibles, in turn making the levels very linear. That's just a fault of the game, and it's the reason why I don't like Star Allies as much as Return to Dreamland and Planet Robobot.
    The other major thing is the difficulty. The helpers are what make this game easier than other Kirby-titles. I too agree that they make very hard to keep your eye on Kirby and that sometimes you feel like the game is playing itself.
    However, unlike the first point, this is not the game's fault, but the player's. You yourself can choose how many helpers follow you and getting rid of them is as easy as getting them. I personally only rarely had a party of four characters with my and exclusively fought Bosses with Kirby alone, and I never had to complain about not having to do anything.
    I highly recommend you to play Planet Robobot, which is still hailed as the best in the series by most Kirby-Fans. The level-design is much better, with 3 collectibles per level and you have to play as Kirby alone, so you'll never feel like you're not doing anything yourself.

    My biggest gripe with the game is the level design. A lot of the levels just weren’t that interesting. Which was very disappointing considering that Planet Robobot, a $40 3DS game, had much more fun levels. Like there was a level where the waddle dees were vrooming the city streets with cars, the giant ice cream factory level, and the very fun casino level. There was no abundance of reusing levels or reusing mini bosses and there was much more interesting levels. Star Allies was longer, but it wasn’t as fun to go through and play back again. The game was pretty disappointing overall. For me it was a fine Kirby game and nothing more. Kirby games can do better. The team is completely capable. A cheaper Kirby did quite a lot more things right than Star Allies.

    Absolutely agree. I'd give it a slightly higher note because while the price tag stings I'm able to just bite the bullet, but all your criticisms run true. The game is barely longer than the original NES Kirby and its GBA remake. In a way that's good for replayability and speedrunning, since you can finish the game in a single dedicated session... But these are very minor advantages for it just being very lacking in content.

    The game's main mechanic of having teammates is what ultimately brings the game down. If it was a purely solo Kirby game, then everything would have been much more challenging and more engaging. The teammates were so over-powered and smart to the point that the game was basically on auto-pilot.

    Arlo, there *IS* a harder mode! It's all in the after game! Newer Kirby games have added hard modes after you beat the story where you play as someone other than Kirby (with half his health in some instances), enemies are bigger with more beefy health and attacks, bosses are more difficult to take down and have more sporadic attack patterns, and there's secret bosses to beat. Not to mention having little to no healing items.
    After that there's the boss rush, which scales in difficulty the more you play and trust me, trying to survive until the end counts as the biggest challenge.

      That's how it usually was with the new Kirby games. But in this... I can't say that the Star Allies mode is a hard mode like the ones in the other games. I mean, yeah, the health is somewhat lower but that's all I noticed. In Adventure Wii, Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot they actually changed the bosses and some of the puzzles. But here they are all the same, except that there is a new boss at the end instead of the regular one.
      Overall Star allies was very disapointing especially after Planet Robobot. Also they should just use the expirience from Blowout blast and Battle royale and make a real 3D game finally. That would be at least exciting.

      I disagree. Crystal shards had more inspired levels, but the overall level design in Star Allies, as well as the way the game plays is superior, what with every ability having different attacks.

    • @Chichirumiru
      @Chichirumiru 6 років тому +3

      Level Design is pretty bad in star allies. There are no puzzles that require the player to think, the enemies are way to easy and the stage hazards aren't dangerous at all.
      So not only are they boring and repettetive to play compared to Crystal Shards but there are also ONLY 4 WORLDS...
      What do you mean by: "as well as the way the game plays is superior" The game is way to easy, doesn't require the player to think at all, stage hazards aren't hazardous.
      When you need certain abilities for a secret the game pretty much always just gives them to you and if you need allies the game will always give them to you.
      "what with every ability having different attacks." Did you even play Crystal Shards? In Crystal Shards you can combine ANY two abilities. In Star Allies you can only combine very few abilities and the once you can combien are simply ripped from Crystal Shards, boring or repetetive.
      Oh boy a sword thats on fire
      Oh boy a bomb thats on fire
      Oh boy a bumerang thats on fire.
      Not only are there more abalities in Crystal shards, they are also much better and unique. Crystal Shards has more quantity and more quality abilities

    You should definitely look into the 3DS Kirby games if you want to see why we love Kirby so much. They're a bit on the easy side too, but they also have more levels, including the much harder EX levels, and a huge variety of really creative and funny things done with the game's gimmicks. One of my favorites was on stage 5 of Old Odyssey of Triple Deluxe: Kirby gets the Hypernova which upgrades his vacuum ability into the Wind Tunnel, then he comes across a house made of straw and inhales it, causing the Waddle Dee inside to run away. A little further on is a house made of logs. Kirby inhales it and the two Waddle Dees inside run away, leaping off a cliff with a third one. Kirby looks over the cliff to see, not a house of bricks, but an enormous steel tower with a cannon shooting bombs at Kirby. The best part of this fight is the three little Waddle Dees are watching from a balcony on the tower. As you damage the tower, the Waddle Dees go from watching Kirby, to looking down worriedly, to adorably running around in a panic. When the tower falls, they even hover in midair frozen for a second in classic Looney Tunes fashion. And that's just one of the Hypernova sections. Going from Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot to Star Allies is like going from Yoshi's Island to Yoshi's Story: it's not bad, but it's disappointing after playing its predecessor.

    I'm a huge kirby fan and i pre-ordered this game. I played the heck out of it, defeated Void Termina, and then I was like, "is that it?" It was the first time I ever felt disappointed in a video game series like that because I at least wanted a few more worlds out of this. The overworld idea was so cute and kirby games usually have way more worlds than just 4. So, I totally agree with your video. I'm hoping that this was just a one time accident because of the huge co-op focus and that the next single player kirby experience offers way more than this did. I'm not mad, just disappointed. Love you Kirby.

Many people are including Triple Deluxe in this, but honestly I disagree with that, however... I fully recommend Robobot. I don't want to spoil you on it, but Robobot pretty much takes 90% of your problems out of the window, and the other 10% just smaller. I promise that Robobot will make you at least a Kirby viewer, if not a fan.

    This is a fair analysis. I'm a big Kirby fan and I have to say that in my opinion, Kirby peaked in Kirby's Return to Dreamland on the Wii and even that game wasn't perfect. It seems to me like Kirby doesn't do difficulty most of the time. That's not necessarily a bad thing and it can be nice to just go on a simple adventure and kill everything in your path without breaking a sweat, but I need challenge to keep me coming back to a game. The way I played Kirby's Return to Dreamland was with my girlfriend as player one (she is not very good at Kirby games) and what made it especially fun was trying to keep her alive by both protecting her in the game and coaching her on what needed to be done next. It was a great time and I hope when I do it again with this game it will be just as fun, but Kirby could do with some difficulty towards the end.

    Im a huge hardcore kirby fan and I 100% agree with you. Now, I think that HAL should focus on a more ambitious project. Kirby Star Allies shows that Kirby could get worse in quality, becoming the New Super Mario Bros of the switch, lacking solid innovation. Whether its Kirby in 3D or a huge new gimmick like robobot or a Kirby metroidvania styled game, the next Kirby game should learn from the mistakes of star allies.

    I'm a big fan of Kirby and can honestly say this game disappointed me. The graphics were great, but it was waaay too easy, even for Kirby.
    I loved robobot and going from that game to this just felt like a downgrade. Nowhere near as much creativity, content, collectibles, original music (not remixed), nor good pacing.

    im pretty sure most kirby fans also though this game was disapointing,
    well, i am a huge kirby fan and i was disapointed
    just because this game is on the switch, wich is nintendo most powerful console, it does not mean this is the best kirby can do, i understand the focus on level design for a multiplayer scenario, but it does not excuse its other problems
    if you really want to see whats the best kirby can offer, play Return to DreamLand on wii, or Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot on the 3ds, thoses games are kirby's peak, atleast on my personal opnion and the one of a good chunk of the fan base's opnion,
    well obviusly neither of then are perfect, its really easy to say that they are way less inperfect then this game
    (i still dont understand why relasing a kirby game so early in the consoles life span, 90% of kirby games were relases pretty late, and the extra time to work on them really shows)

    • @FlameUser64
      @FlameUser64 6 років тому

      Robobot has one huge flaw imo and that is that there's two bosses that are actually really fought _with_ the Robobot Armour. You don't get to do Kirby's Robobot Armour vs. Susie's Business Suit or fun things like that. There's no Robobot Armour phase for Haltmann or Mecha Knight. You get to like… sort of fight parts of two bosses in the Robobot Armour but it's really not the same thing. Also, the most fun Robobot Armour modes are also the least common. Mike mode shows up in all of 2 levels, which is a damn shame 'cause it has basically the most complex and fun moveset of all of them.
      And what's more, Star Dream is an Unexpected Gameplay Change rather than a more normal use of the Robobot Armour.
      They could have fixed this with like, free DLC, but they didn't.

    The game picks up a LOT more with the free updates they made after release. Being able to play as iconic Kirby characters from past games, and the "Heroes in Another Dimension" campaign, really makes this game significantly more interesting than people give it credit for.
    And yes, I know its lame for them to release a game unfinished and improve it later, but at least they bothered improving it at all.

    My 4 year old loves Kirby, got it last week and he loves it. Me personally never was in to Kirby. I never really liked how he felt to control. Was used to more fluid gameplay styles of Mario, Sonic and Crash Bandicoot. And I completely agree with your critique of the dashing control. But it was the first game my son beat practically by himself, and the co-op is bearable. So it was worth it for me. But if you don’t have a young one to play it with, or aren’t young yourself? You probably won’t get much out of it, unless you are a huge Kirby fan.

    After Planet Robobot’s great level design, theming, and fantastic gimmick (the mech suit), Star Allies feels like a huge downgrade in comparison.
    They’ve dumbed down the design of everything so multiplayer is mostly straightforward. Nothing *wrong* with doing that, but I feel like they could’ve done better. The new gimmicks (Friend Circle, Bridge, Star) also make no sense with this multiplayer focus since only one person can really control them at a time.
    I dunno. Maybe they had to rush this one out to give Switch’s first-party library a bit more punch, but I can’t help but feel like this game is mostly wasted potential. At least the lore is good!

      What Arlo means is that you're using an analog stick rather than a d-pad. So pushing the stick slightly should make you walk, and pushing it all the way should make you run. Having to double-tap the analog stick means the developers used an analog controller for digital input, which is pretty silly.

    • @lordziz

      @Anubalfer 6 років тому +1

      Mr. Math What you first said is absolutely right, but you do not double tap the analog stick to run. You do that with the D-pad. What the analog does do is use one walk input and then a snapping input to run, which as you said is silly for an analog stick in this type of game. I got used to snapping in order to run and that's how I remained playing, but it sucked when I would get into a walk/crawl by accident.

    Arlo, I want to thank you for making this video. I haven't played Star Allies yet, and while I'm sure I'm gonna enjoy the heck out of it (I'm a huge Kirby fan, I was gonna play it regardless of what ANY review says) I have definitely seen most channels giving fair reviews to the game. A lot of the things people perceive as issues just don't bother me in what I look for in a game: just some good, clean fun with no muss, no fuss. Like, I appreciate a challenge, and I do enjoy me a good story in a game, but sometimes the mind just wants to shut off and enjoy a simple, chill, not very difficult game like Kirby. I'm not blind to flaws in a game, I just find myself pretty mellow and forgiving most of the time towards those flaws.
    And I know I'm echoing a lot of fans in their remarks, but I absolutely think you'd get EXACTLY what you want out of a Kirby game with games like Kirby Planet Robobot or Triple Deluxe. Return to Dreamland and Super Star Ultra also might scratch that itch, but Triple Deluxe and ESPECIALLY Planet Robobot are games I'd absolutely suggest for you to try out given your concerns. I cannot stress enough how much Planet Robobot feels like a perfect Kirby game for you, and I know with your schedule and how things are as a content creator, you probably don't have the time for it, but if you could even just try Robobot, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. Since the gimmick to that game, the Robobot Armor, is beautifully crafted into the game's level design. You feel awesome using it since EVERYTHING gets destroyed by the Robobot Armor, even some things Kirby can't normally stop. And I personally feel it has a pretty fair difficulty curve... For Kirby. It's still easy throughout most of it, but the bonus modes to increase that difficulty enough, I feel.
    So in conclusion, secret's safe with me, I didn't rat you out to the hardcore Kirby fans. You have a perfectly fair stance on the game and I respect your opinion. And I think the game you SHOULD play is Robobot, it's exactly what you're looking for out of Kirby.

    Arlo this review was great but same of the the problems you talk about are probably gonna be "problems" you will find with every Kirby game:
    1. To this day the way the double dash works was implemented in every kirby game.
    2. Most of the final bosses make the story more interesting and feature new gameplay.
    And 3. Most Kirby games are easy not as easy as this game but still pretty easy.

    Am I the only one who thought the dashing thing was just a massive nitpick? Like...we've played Smash. Yes, it only takes one tap there, but I really don't know HOW you can possibly get mixed up with movement with one tiny little extra press. It being a 2D game, I'd *rather* having an extra input for going faster (unless it's Sonic where the whole point is speed).
    Like, I wouldn't complain about having to hit a button to dash in Mega Man X (or even *the same damn double-tap input as Kirby* and that's only for a split-second boost so I need to do it WAY MORE than Kirby), so spending any time on that just seemed silly.

    I only played the demo, but the two things that bugged me were the abilities combinations and the chaotic 3 ai following. The simple level design was also something, but i wasnt expecting much from it.
    I think amazing mirror did 4 characters much better. things are chaotic when all 4 characters are around, but not only is the game a metroidvania in design, the 3 ai wonder the map and you can stumble across them or call them all to you directly for bosses you may be struggling in.
    and on the combinations, while they arent bad i suppose, i have a kirby 64 bias, and in that game each ability could combine with another. in this game you can combine an element with a weapon, but in 64 for example, cutter and bomb made kirby throw exploding ninja stars, and ice and electricity turned kirby into a fridge. stuff like that. Each one basically only had one function, but it was still really cool. I just really want a kirby game to revisit this idea and improve upon it. what this game does just teases that idea...which hurts me a little inside.

    while i can agree in the tecnical level(double tap run, cpu killing themselves and scream clutter) i absolutely cannot agree with difficulty, this is THE kid franchise even more than pokemon, i always seen kirby as a healing type of gameplay, were you're just sit back relax and enjoy all the overwhelming cuteness of the game, the journey is about making friends, eating good food and hearing kirby do adorable things.

    Kirby is one of my favorite series and is incredibly nostalgic for me. The games were never extremely difficult but they at least had puzzles that required you to think ahead, and grab certain powers before-hand if you wanted to get all the collectibles. Star Allies just didn't have that extra bit for older players and I was really disappointed by it. Even though it's pretty unique in the Kirby library I suggest everyone should try Amazing Mirror.
