jacob, i'm floored. i'm speechless. the complexity of your harmony is deep. your use of dissonance and resolution is balanced and mature, and your creativity in the world of dynamics and using the voice as an instrument is stunning. i'm shocked. please keep making music. your genius will not go unnoticed. thank you for making art for the world.
I don't know whether or not he uses any kind of effects, but it is very much possible to have it both ways through extensive training. I'm currently studying to be a classical musician, and I know at least 2 people with crazy ranges like this - rare, but definitely not impossible. If you study vocal anatomy, you will find that it is quite possible that many more people have this ability than we know, it just takes extensive training to be able to use the full range of your vocal chords.
I must watched this at least 516,654 times now and it is never less than utterly thrilling. The arpeggio at 1:55 is madness. Wonderful, never fails to make me smile...
I'm really not one for a capella vids. Not because I think they're bad, they just don't interest me much, but it's been like, oh, I don't know, maybe two years since I've seen this and it still hasn't left my mind. The amount of knowledge of music theory and technical skill still blows me away. By far the past a capella cover I've ever seen on UA-cam.
He seems to have a good knowledge of jazz piano chords and uses his multi-tracked voice to stand in for the piano keyboard. Technically brilliant, but a little unsettling to listen to. Not exactly gratuitous virtuosity, but a bit much for my ears.
Cliff Hughes dude listen to a single voice at a time. Every voice has voice leading that leads perfectly to the next chord. It’s unreal. He just uses his ear too. He doesn’t think about the theory he just hears where the next note should go. If you think this is unsettling to listen to then you must not have an ear for jazz music or anything with slightly complex chords
I love how at 1:03 the first chorus ends with a big dissonant chord and when the melodica comes in it resolve yet almost immediately after goes back to the dissonance. It's like the most musical "he had us at the first part" moment.
I just melt when I hear those chords... I wish I was younger, so I could have more years to see what music you create in your lifetime. Thank-you for sharing your gifts with the world.
If I were a talent scout for Sony or any major label I would get him right away. Man, he will rule some day. He's not one of those 'genious kids' who mastered their instruments, but a full blown musician, much too advanced for his age. The depth of this arrangement would have blown me away regardless of his age. This is the kind of music I'm looking for as a listener. Harmonically complex and rich, yet accessible. I'm buying his record as soon as he records any.
Please, can we get the word out about this kid? He is a GENIUS - and every day that we glorify singers that don't deserve it (watching their careers go into the shitter as a result), we rob TRUE talent of opportunity. And Jacob deserves all the musical attention from the most sophisticated ears around. He needs to be given everything he requires to make sure that he continues to produce ART. For himself and his own pleasure, but also to enhance and progress the community of musicians everywhere.
The Moog of voice. The subtleness in the blending of frequencies is both beautiful and amazing. I've been around a long time; but I've never heard anything quite like this. Many thanks!
Okay I really need to get into jazz and the CRAZY chords you get in stuff like this. I love it, because it's so trippy, just my thing! Fantastic job!!!!!
Jacob is an inspiration to me in many ways. I feel I have been waiting for someone to come onto the music scene and express the kind of advanced, beautiful, fresh and adventurous ideas and emotions harmonically. As for his musicianship it's all together masterful, professional, mature, articulate and technically magnificent. To make a masterpiece like his acapella videos truly are, is extraordinarily challenging. I would bet piles of money he is not ever going to autotune anything he does and I would wager he'd rather just do a 2nd take of a part instead. I also doubt very much he uses tricks to extend his range, but possibly double it or mix it a certain way. He seems to me like he has a very tremendous natural range but I'd also bet that he developed it through practice, study and diligent dedication and hard work.
it appears he is a better vocalist, bassist, drummer, pianist, guitarist, melodica-ist than 90% of people who specialize in one of those instruments; mindblowing overall musician.
There's a serious problem in the world when constructive criticism is equated with senseless and irrational hatred. It's a problem when productive discussion of opposing ideas is suppressed by children with low self-esteem that get a sense of pride by "sticking up for" the people they like when somebody offers an idea to try to help them improve in the future. I thumbs upped your comment by the way. These children need to grow up.

+lewiswesley66 I assumed he sang the bassline an octave up and pitched it down in post production.. I'm not sure though. I guess it's possible that he has that kind of vocal range. But I mean, even if he did drop it an octave, that's different than using autotune or melodyne, so I wouldn't consider it cheating or anything. It's just that his musical ideas are on such a colossal scale that he has to utilize technology in order to create all of the unimaginable sounds he hears in his head.
+Logan Sowder He definitely has that range. His speaking voice is pretty deep but I guess he's just spent a good amount of time working on the falsetto.
+TrumpetGuy7 I agree. He really can sing over that range. There is a black and white video of him taken during a rehearsal with the WDR big-band. In that he demonstrates his full vocal range and it's clearly uploaded without any post-recording pitch changes.
@@grahamthomason8796 His lowest not consistently is a d two octaves below middle c. He has been quoted saying "yes! i hit a b!" so no he doesn't have the full range that he utilizes in his videos, but he is probably still considered a bass. I can usually get a b out and most people consider me a bass. there are crazy basses out there who can do much better so probably jacob is a bass 1 or baritone.
