People need to rock their natural hair or get wigs and weaves that match their REAL curl pattern. One thing I noticed is that, black women with 4B or 4C hair love slapping on a 3C/4A wig 😒 there are 4B/4C wigs that exist….

I don't wear wigs and never will but who cares? Why do black women have to get a specific style that matches their hair type. If they wanna bus down in a Sarah from Westville wig.. who cares?
And what's the point of slapping on a wig that looks like your hair if you naturally got it?

    I disagree with one thing
The looser textures didn't take over.
    We have to be truthful.
Black women with type 4 hair never addressed the obsession with "good hair', all the natural hair movement did in the 2010s was trying to get defined curls. Whether if it was twistouts, braidouts, wash and gos and crazy methods like the "Maximum Hydration Method".
It was black women with type 4 hair subscribing and worshiping type 3 under their videos, in the comments. I've been there since 2009 and I saw black women en mass getting big chops and having breakdowns cause they didn't have a loose curl, obsessively checking their new growth for any semblance of a curl, I saw them put down their own hair while they worshiped type 3 hair.
It was black women shaming other black women with type 4c hair. It was black women obsessed with having a curl.
All black women had to do is stop idolising type 3 hair but they didn't. I saw the comments, I saw thousands of comments saying how much they want loose curls while insulting their own hair
Companies saw what black women were gravitating to, so companies put a type 3 on a product and sold it to black women.
This wig apocalypse i believe is a response to the failure of the 2010s Natural hair movement.
This problems will repeat itself unless black women take accountability for the actual downfall of the movement.

Let’s look at reason why black women with type 4 hair idolized type 3 hair so much…. The reason is because it was more widely accepted. Type 3 hair was usually associated with being “exotic” or “ambiguous” and so becuase society accepted that (society accepts anything that is closest to Eurocentric features), that’s why a lot of black women wanted their hair to be looser. Now not all black women. Because I did see a lot of 4 type hair women still appreciate their natural hair during that movement but it wasn’t common. So naturally the 3 type hair women took over because it’s was more accepted in society when it came to “natural hair” …. And this is why the natural hair movement was such a fail NOT because of type 4 women trying to assimilate.

@@UnCommentaryBriyour comment completely ignores OP's point by making more excuses. the point was, type 3 girlies would not have been ablemto "take over," as you put it, if their channels werent visited en masse by type 4 girlies. these companies that sponsored people didnt do it because type 3 hair was more accepted by society, they did it because type 3 hair was getting more views. its always been more about making money more so than what society deemed as acceptable.

This was such a good topic. A lot of black women truly don’t realize how far gone they truly are. It’s a subconscious hate we’re experiencing with our hair even in little settings. Phrases like “my type 4 hair is hard to maintain” is a good example. It’s “hard” to maintain because you manipulate it to look like another texture. And you’re comparing it to how “easy” it may be to style European hair. Why are we making that comparison when our hair isn’t European? It’s subjective and we’re comparing maintenance to what we think it should be. It takes just the right amount of effort to care for our hair because it is indeed our hair. Straight wigs and weaves on Black women contribute to racism. It’s feeding into the one and only glamorized beauty standard. I like wearing my hair straight sometimes and I secretly have a hard time adjusting to its curly state again. Yes, it looks good straight, but then I see how beautiful my curls are. It’s a bit off putting jumping from one weave to another. And I only say this because it becomes an identity. Like the video title says, it’s dysmorphic. I think every woman should have the freedom to wear their hair the way they choose, but it’s time to look at the reasoning behind it. Like India Arie and Akon said I know we’re not our hair, but it’s worth discussing. Now we have in the media “don’t wear your natural hair to my fancy event” or “box braids aren’t a birthday hairstyle.” Sexy red just said 4c hair looks like carpet??? 😂 it’s getting a weee bit out of hand. I had a friend that told me that my hair is never done because I don’t wear weaves. My hair is always done, but in its natural state. I hear people saying “I look a mess right now” just because their natural hair is out. Our curls and kinks are worth loving. It gives us our character and it is truly a crown.

  • @Janna_Ash

I’ve just bought a wig for the first time at 37 years old lol. I’m actually really excited because I got a texture that looks about the same as mine. I agree with the woman in the video saying a fro is the easiest style, but I don’t agree that it’s easy for maintaining my type 4 hair. It’s easier to take care of my hair if I have it somewhat stretched out, because it dries out fast, and it’s too easy for my hair to mat and tangle.
And I’m not messing with any complicated lace wigs or parts lol. The one I bought is a 3-in-1, made to be worn as a headband/half wig, or you can close it up with the drawstring and do like a puff/ponytail.
I know folks will do what they want, but I wish more Black women would at least embrace more natural texture wigs. Because I’ve seen some comments lately, and why would you every want to assist in the superiority complex some of these non-Black women have? One thing they could never accuse me of is thinking their hair is better, or wanting to look like them.

I think about my hair like my Haitian culture everything takes time to the way we make food and to the way we do our hair it just. Its certain steps to take for sure! I've done wigs, extensions, natural hairstyles etc. Do what's best for you but always remember to come back to your natural hair and to be patient to love your hair its easy if your willing to take the time that's all! love this videos and I have 4C hair with a full fro I would love too see more black girls with it :)

After a while I started feeling insecure in wigs. Also got sick of the maintenance. I got the most compliments I’ve seen in a while when I big chopped from ppl I know and strangers. This old yt woman said that my haircut was beautiful and accentuated my facial features. Even when I wear head wraps whenever I don’t feel like doing my hair it’s a different vibe. Ppl treat me so kindly. I just feel naturally beautiful either way.
Plus when I got deeper into my faith, I sort of felt weird about knowing that not all the hair is ethically sourced. Some women overseas sacrifice their hair to their gods, and I know from scripture that I’m not even supposed to eat anything sacrificed to idols, so I’m not gonna take anything potentially sacrificed to idols. I’m just learning a lot about hair spiritually. I’m not even gonna chop my hair anymore, but Yk that’s a whole other conversation, and a personal choice for me. I love the look of a good bussdown 😂 so it’s hard for when I want to switch it up, but I’m embracing my real hair and Afrocentric styles.

I completely accept that this is a deeply rooted, painful subject-matter to dissect but her message would be much stronger if she weren't also wearing fake hair.
Post Video Edit: I love what you said about wig quality being tied to economically standing. I would agree with this take which is why we need to shed the wigs. I personally wear wigs too, but I'm on a journey to reduce how much wigs, and to only wear realistic textures which match my own since I truly do not have the time, energy, or desire to be blending my natural 4b/c hair with a straight buss down wig which will never ever look fully blended or right beyond the two seconds it takes to walk away from the stylists chair and into the real world. Great video btw! I really enjoyed your thoughts on this!

I have a serious question as a white woman. How is it any different for a BW to wear a wig, get extensions, etc. than a WW coloring or perming her hair? I color my hair, have for 30 years. It's just the way I like it. I feel like a woman should wear her hair any way she wants! We have to feel good about ourselves.

    • @UnCommentaryBri
      @UnCommentaryBri  16 днів тому +1

The difference is that black women use wigs as a protective hair style; which white women don’t really have to do since their curl pattern is not as prone to damage like black women’s curl pattern is. The wig helps black women from having to put too much heat or product on to our natural hair. But over time using a wig as a protective hair style becomes an EXCUSE, because some women neglect their hair under the wig. Also this excuse hides the fact that black women do not love their natural beauty. Another major difference is that black women use wigs to assimilate to Eurocentric beauty standards; which white women already have.
I agree with feeling good about yourself! But I also feel like going to the extremes to do so, (like wearing a wig 365 days a year) is not feeling good about yourself but rather hiding your true self. And only feeling good about the “self” you present to society.

My hair is finally in a healthy state today and I want to maintain that.
Bc we’re women, we are already under a microscope by society at large for simply existing in our own bodies. To take it a step further, as bw, the scrutiny is far more excessive and comes from everyone! With all these think pieces about hair/makeup/body image, femininity schools, etc it sends the warped message to young black girls and bw in general that they’re inherently flawed and that’s far from true. I didn't place so much importance on hair until discovering natural hair videos over a decade ago then suddenly it started getting lumped with identity and became a bigger deal than dead cells on the head.
