I’ve been watching a few 029 (290) videos after I recently rebuilt my 029 saw….it ran good but someone had broken off the exhaust bolt bosses….so I got on eBay and ordered a piston / jug kit …low and behold it was slightly different that the oem jug…it physically fit ok after some trial assy…odd thing was the decompression hole the 029 head didn’t have and the piston was much bigger…measured the piston and looked up stroke…cc was bumped from 54cc to 64cc ….i thought wow …that was bored out a lot..😅 …..after some you tube video search I accidentally ran across this 290 to 390 conversion process and that’s exactly what unknowingly did!
Nice video and can’t wait to get my fresh 390 out for a test..

It really made a huge difference in my saw! Lots more torque for sure. I recently did a muffler mod on it and man oh man did it wake it up!!! I would highly recommend it. It gave it even more power, and it sounds pretty good too 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting!

Swap the jet in your carb out from the .56mm to the .65mm jet that is meant for the 390. You and your saw will thank you. It will greatly improve your mid range power.

Thanks Terry. It really woke this old saw up! I wanted to buy a new 400C really bad, but I’m also wanting to start on my sawmill build, so I went with this upgrade for now. Thanks for stopping by!

Looks like she really woke up! I ran a 290 for a lot of years. Great saw now even better. Nice upgrade Brandon👊🏻

It made a tremendous difference over the worn out 290. I’m debating on whether or not to open up the muffler now? Thanks for watching Todd 👌🏻

@@McKameyFarms would be really interested in seeing the difference opening the muffler would make!

I’ve got to many saws now but I started cutting with a 390 and I love that saw hope you enjoy your fresh saw I would also recommend do a muffler mod but it will be louder but give you a little extra kick and run cooler also if you haven’t or it might not have them but there might be some limiter caps were your high low jets are on your carb if so watch a video of how to remove them so you can get a better tune on the saw i hope that helps have a good day 🪓🌲

Thanks a bunch! Yes I’m definitely going to do a muffler mod to open it up and get a little more out of it. I do need to tune it and adjust the idle but it made such a huge difference from the old tired 290 engine. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Do yourself a favor and either change that decompression valve to a oem stihl one or just put a plug in it. Those cheap Chinese valves will fall apart and tear up that new engine.

You’re absolutely right about that! I pulled it out and plugged it within 2 months. I noticed it had some black carbon around the stem so I’m sure it started leaking. Problem eliminated 👌🏻 Thanks for watching and commenting
