Part 1( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I start the tear down process. I break down the chainsaw down to the piston to discover that internal engine damage has occurred. The piston is severely damaged.
Part 2( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I complete the remainder of the engine tear down. I find additional components damaged and the culprit of the engine failure. I make a list of what is required to rebuild and place my order.
Part 3( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I install the new complete engine assembly. During assembly I encounter a few minor issues. To finish it off I fire up this newly rebuilt chainsaw!

First time doing a top end rebuild and you did good buddy.
Never understood why people don't just pull the saw off the bar when they get it stuck in a tree. It's a lot better than dropping a tree on it.
before you pull it apart, take off carb cover, clutch cover, and chain and bar and use hi perssure air to blow all the dirt and chips out from all around the engine, helps to keep from getting all that crap all over bench and in engine when you pull cylinder off, good vid THANX

So I bought the same kit you did off amazon. I also noticed the decomp valve was malfunctioning on the first start up. So I replaced it with a hyway decomp valve. I noticed it really seemed to lack power for what I thought it should have been making. Did you respond seem to wake up after a few tanks of gas? Any idea what kind of rpms you were turning?
I’d cap the decomp valve. Mine gave me issues. Power was never an issue. I got a motorcycle clamp style rpm gauge and set it at 13 or 14,000 rpm. Whatever is recommended by the factory.
I'm curious do you have the rebuild kit parts numbers. There are a lot of junk kits out there
There is an Amazon link in the description. Btw, I'm not saying this isn't a junk kit. It is rumored the quality control isn't as good as Stihl. But for 20% the cost and the ability to breathe new life into a damaged saw it was worth the risk for me. Check out our more recent videos on this chainsaw. Aside from the decompression valve failure this has been an excellent repair. If I were to do it again I'd plug the decomp valve.

Makita for the WIN! I was actually looking at my growing cordless tool collection today and it's starting to get pretty big. Once you pick a battery platform it's hard to change. Plus the tools are so versatile I seem to keep adding without regrets. Now I can't imagine life without them. 🤣
just removed it kinda backwards! need remove the very end screw /that allows the black handle part to lift! then can snap -out the throttle linkage /remove the carb ,,then push the carb lines through the orange cover.!
Yea, everytime I take this apart I fell like I discover a better way going back together. Problem is by the time I take it apart again I forget which way was best. 🤦
