There has been a glut of covers of this song over the years. This one, Mel Carter, etc. But to set the record straight (and thanks to those who hinted at it here), it was composed by the legendary Adriano Celentano as Il Ragazzo Della Via Gluck. Francoise Hardy also did a tremendous job with it as La Maison Ou J'ai Grandi. And the version that caught on in the States was the mid-1966 rendition on Capitol by Verdelle Smith. In this case, despite who played on it, what Caroline Munro did in later years, etc. really misses the point. Dig up the video of Adriano Celentano's original (it's here on UA-cam). Il Ragazzo Della Via Gluck is a powerful, highly dramatic lament about commercial development taking away that which is dear to many. And the key to its impact is the high drama delivery. The strings, the minor keys, etc., which are especially evidenced on Verdelle Smith's version. This one just flat out does not have that attribute. It's arranged and rendered in majors, which creates the impression that the otherwise capable Caroline Munro is just running through it with minimal concern for the subject matter. And the notion of who played on this version being the focal point merely underscores it all. Go to the Adriano Celentano, Francoise Hardy or Verdelle Smith versions, and the sheer power of any of those three versions will render any such concerns about the hired help secondary, at best.
I too am having a hard time accepting that as a fact. I don't hear anything of them and I am sure they could have been totally accomodating session players.
@@bondbrookebond I don't believe the A-side is on any compilation although the B-side "This Sporting Life" is on Dream Babes Volume 2 - Reflections (RPM 224) which came out in 2001. Their was a compilation called The Mod Scene that came out on Decca in 1998 but it doesn't feature Caroline Munro or "Tar and Cement".
I saw a pic of Caroline. Jesus Christ is she gorgeous. Or was. Really beautiful. And I heard that Cream and Steve Howe are in this single. I don’t hear anything like them.
The song is very 'european' - sounding, ( I can't put my finger on exactly what makes it so , to me -it's not got that 'eurobeat' oompah thing that ABBA made their own ) . ---oOo--- Caroline, may I say - your voice was as sweet as your figure and face. And I do enjoy your Late-Night Brit-horror film introductions.
