im from the US , and have worked as a plumber and as a mechanical tech , ( ductwork in new construction ) plumbers putty and duct seal are two completely different things , plumbers putty is what you have in the UK , we have the same here called by the same name . Duct seal is more of liquid that dries to a hard rubberized coating used for sealing joints in new HVAC ductwork , so you basically paint it on . plumbers putty is for sealing sinks and shower drains etc and never changes consistency or hardness, duct seal is like a thick rubberized paint that does in fact set and get hard in a few weeks . just letting the US guys know that plumbers putty is in fact what you need . if you want to make it thicker then you can mix with a non drying modeleing clay . also to get a large tub you will have to go to a plumbing supply store but you may need to know a plumber because most only sell to contractors . because home depot or big box stores only sell small 1-2 pound containers of plumbers putty but you will need several for this project so the cost may be high . big home renovation stores do sell gallons of duct seal but again thats not what you need .
Plumbers putty (at least in North America) is used on plumbing, things like drains, around faucets etc to stop leaks and is fairly light and will dry out over time with air contact but does not go completely hard. Duct Seal is usually used in the electrical trade to seal openings in conduit boxes etc, around wiring and the like and comes in clay like blocks and is much more dense and better at stopping pellets, this is the good stuff. It also never dries out and remains pliable. Look up Gardner Bender Duct seal for an example. There is another version of duct seal that comes in a tub that is for sealing HVAC duct work, it is not what you want.
I built a backstop using your design and its worked well. I added a handle to the top of the trap to make it easier to carry around. The handle was made from the piece of plywood cut out of the centre. I'd never heard of the super glue and baking soda trick - learn somerthing new every day.
The baking soda and thin super glue is a really useful filler material, I use it a lot filling in ballast holes in fishing lures and all sorts of crafting jobs. The fumes can be a bit savage though so best to have decent ventilation 😉
I really like the design. I looks great and I''m sure it works well. But... The quietest pellet trap I have made, was just an old cardboard box, roughly A4 cubed and filled with old t-shirts,shorts, etc. Then I just taped the target to the front of the box. You would hear the pellets hitting the cardboard, but that's it. The box full of scrumpled up clothing would trap the pellets without any further noise. I was using a 30+ ftlb air rile at 10m or so, and not one pellet ever made it through. Once the 'face' of the box was shot out, tape it up and turn the box around and present a new face. Or... just find another box... I would then shake the pellets out of the clothing, to melt into other things like fishing sinkers. Then stuff the clothes back in and away you go again. Cheap, light, portable and effective. Just don't get it wet. 😀
I just started shooting steel plate with my air rifle. I love the noise of pellets hitting the plate and the plate clattering away. I'd become bored shooting paper. It was only when I stood up and shot my rifle without aids (bags, benches, rests, kneeling, prone etc) That I realised what a terrible shot I was :) It was definitely a "Ah... That's disappointing") moment. So I ditched my telescopic sight (for now anyways) stuck on a donated red dot from a friend and had one of my most fun days shooting ever. Even zeroing the sight in had me in stitches. It was nice to do something fresh and I've always looked at the IPSC shooters with some envy. The only thing missing with an air gun is the semi auto option bit it's still a lot of fun. + you can shoot off a tin of decent pellets for under twenty quid. Try doing that with live rounds... I'm hoping to have some video up soon. keep an eye on Hawkes eye tv if you're not already... Thanks in advance guys ;)
Funny post 😊 Semi auto is so much fun it’s hard to want to shoot anything else Even the co2 bb are great fun at short distances Currently using a big plastic bag of sawdust for a target holder 8 quid
My backstop for backyard plinking is a cardboard box filled with old cotton jeans/Tshirts etc. At 10 metres it stops .22 pellets at 30fpe in the first 600mm/2.5 inches. Totally silent !!!! BTW ... use your hook on the pellet trap to hang the washers so you don't lose them.
I use rubber mulch with a peice of 12" pvc pipe and if you turn it upright and shake it the lead goes to the bottom and you just take out the mulch and the lead is clean ,I do have a steal plate 3/16" on the back .I make all my own slugs and pellets 22,25,30,35 caliber.
Made a very similar pellet trap, with a lead back instead of putty. Just melted my collection of old pellets into a pan. Every few years, when the lead bump in the middle gets to high i melt it down again. And scoop the lead off. To use it for "other purposes"... ;-) Really like the levels on yours!
That's a terrific piece of engineering, mines a little bit scruffy, and has a 3mm steel plate as a back stop on a 3 ft round x 2 inch thick table top on stilts, got other things on it, like funnels and traps. Pin the printed A4 target sheets between two pieces of timber using map pins, makes a bit of a racket, but the neighbours don't seem to mind, apparently you can hear the clatter on the back stop half a mile down the lane adjacent to our house... So the Mrs told me.. You've done a cracking job there.. Can't wait for dead center. 177 test..
It's evolved nicely from the MK1 versions eh... I need a low wind day for the jts mate. The results have been really unusual so far. I need to get back onto the farm In areas I'm familiar with how the wind runs ,just incase the results at the club are wind related and I've missed something. First time I've been caught out entirely by a pellet 🤔
Duct Seal is totally different, it is found in the Electrical section of a hardware store, it has similar properties to Silly Putty, but not as bouncy, or soft.
We Don’t have plumbers putty here. I build one useing window putty. It needs to be much thicker because it is less dense. When you hit the same spot often, the hole goes all through after a while. It works much better with plumbers putty it seems. Thanks for the idea.
Morning TG, brings back memories of being sent to the stores for a new spirit level bubble 🤣🤣. Some nice upgrades to the pellet trap, can see it being good for BBs and stopping ricochets.
Great pellet trap , I did a similar design after seeing yours .the only difference I used an old triangular wine rack to hold the roasting tin .It has a carry handle at the top.
I give you an extra 10 points mate for re using scraps 😀 I can't stand wasting something that might come in useful down the line...hence I'm an absolute hoarder of junk 🤣
As far as JTS 177's ,they might have the same issue as hades ,they were fantastic in 22 but 177 was very mixed results I personally couldn't find a 177 air rifle that liked hades, and I have owned quite a few
I need to try them in familiar surroundings mate. The results at 55yds are a bit baffling right now. Hopefully I get a low wind day to try again through the different barrels and see if it was just a weird result last week. But I did stamp some lovely groups at 55yds in calm conditions at the range.
16:27 whatta hell bro, I just ordered exactly same kind bubble levelers and made leveler for my Impact M4 back rail as a slide in fit, 3D printed it.. :D
i recently bought some of the JTS dead centers in .22 caliber, they weigh in at 16.08 grains and at shorter distances they are pretty accurate have yet to try them out at 35m
I need to get these .177 out into more familiar surroundings mate. The results at 55yards were really peculiar and have thrown a bit of a curve ball at me right now...🤔
@@tillysgunstocks i'll be giving them a whirl on tuesday down at the range see how they shoot at 35m or if it's just me , i've also had to repair my pellet trap, hitting it with a full power coyote(around 33ft-pounds) punched a hole in the back of it
Great improvements to an already well thought out design. Have you tried the rubber bark as a putty alternative? its less messy and easier for pellet removal, only problem is it's more of a box design than the slim line version you have. keep up the great work 👍🏻
Hi mate, I'll be doing some more tests of the various backstop medias when I can. The only thing I might have to work around is retaining the loose chippings behind the targets 🤔
@@tillysgunstocks I had good results with rubber pellets (for filling boxing bags), as I could not find rubber mulch over here. To secure the unluckily a bit small rubber pellets I tried various silicone mats and rubber discs (from Alibaba or so sold as flat markers for sports) that last much longer than just cardboard. For the moment I use both as the cardboard gives me more stiffness to hold the pellets in place. The rubber or silicone mats work fine to keep the rubber in the box and are "self healing" for a while unless you use wadcutters. thanks for your great ideas.
@@tillysgunstocks I haven't built mine yet,(got the rubber bark off ebay) but I'm thinking wooden box the size of the target card with a routed edge on the front end sides and base for the target to slide down in and retain the rubber bark,(separate panel for transportation when carrying etc). box height would be half inch lower than target card for easy card removal and have a lockable lid with handle for carrying and topping up bark. taking inspiration from your design a level mounted to face or tripod style circle one mounted to the lid incase it gets shot by mistake. legs could be something simple like 3 coach bolts as feet, 2 fixed height and 1 adjustable with a locking wing nut to level target box. @@rorymcfadden2727,@tillysgunstocks Thanks, I'll search for that. I think I only found small pellets on Amazon, to fill those bench rest bags, but at a horrendous price of around 10$/€/£ for 1 kilo. The stuff I used now looks the same (not sure about the exact pellet size) but costs only 35$/sFr per 25 kilo plus postage. I guess the rubber mulch is even cheaper and better as it is a bit bigger and has less tendency to fall out of the shot holes. But the rubber mat /cardboard combination works pretty well for now. I build mine out of an around target sized plastic washing powder container with removable handle, as I wanted something pretty rectangular. Put some of my too soft window putty on the bottom, lined most everything with steel plate and filled it with those pellets. I have a 50J rifle and my .22 pellets get stopped after a couple cm`s. No risk of ever touching that back plate, I think. I am not sure yet how to get the lead pellets out of the only a little bigger rubber pellets, as sieving doesn't work well. But they seem to collect a bit when I shake the box. Found the mulch on eBay. Should have searched there instead of amazon or Ali. Thanks.

1: Don't wreck a chisel, buy a wrecking knife. 2: Find an old heating gas cylinder, cut a rectangle in it slightly smaller than your targets (angle grinder). Fill the inside of the back with plumbers putty, stick targets to front with masking tape. 3: Cut a rectangle out of an old heating gas cylinder, fit Ebay UK made spinners to threaded bar fitted through the centerline of cylinder and use plumbers putty again.
