I think they were not so much laughing at the question itself but more at the situation. This was a deep and challenging question coming from this young person. They probably put themselves in the place of the monastic who would have to answer this.

I think his question was “Why is everything *called* everything...why is a dog *called* a dog.”
As languages developed around the world, over the course of human history, man started to utter sounds, associate them with things in the environment around him and communicate to others what’s happening with those things.
The names or sounds associated with these things are arbitrary, but in order to be useful the sounds must be distinguishable, i.e. the sounds can’t all sound the same.
So there is no specific reason why a dog is called a dog. The first individual who wanted to convey a thought to another individual about that animal uttered a sound and made gestures or other physical actions that associated that utterance with that animal in the mind of the other individual they were trying to communicate with. Over time, with repeated use, these utterances or words began to stick, and larger and larger groups started to use the same words, it developed into a useful system.
As evidenced by the differences in so many languages around the world, the assignment of the word dog to the actual animal is arbitrary (dog english, perro spanish etc). What is important is that humans are able to hear the difference between the words used for the objects or things they are trying to describe.

A good answer from the perspective of semantics and the social sciences -- though it doesnt at's the deeper ontological and metaphysical/ spiritual intention of the deep questions Luc asked.

Thank You! Very well explained! If I had to answer I would have explained it with an analogy with cakes. Why is a cheese cake a cheese cake and why is a Schwarzwald cake a Schwarzwald cake? Why isn't it a pancake? They are all made mostly of the same ingredients: water, flour, milk, butter, eggs, suggar, yeast... yet we clearly can differenicate between them. The diifernece is only in the unique combination. You are only yourself because of the unique combination of the elements that came together to form you.

I would argue that words aren’t completely arbitrary. There is a reason for example that Mom sounds similar the world around.
Vibrations have feeling qualities to them. Everything is vibrating at a particular resonance. Humans pick this up to a degree. It of course gets put through our own filters and such so you end up with a wide variety of words. But we wouldn’t call say the sun “herfaberfaberfadomp”. It just wouldn’t happen because it’s just too absurd feeling.

Because words are poor translation of reality. So there is not only one answer for a question which words are meaningless. The word "dog" is false. The word is not the real thing. The animal dog is one with nature, so it's made of "non-dog elementes", like water, minerals... All about to be "every thing" is about not to be "every thing" elements too! ☺️ Thay once Said "to be or not to be?" is not a question in buddism.
My friend I reccomend this Thay talk - cience and buddism toghether (minute 53) ua-cam.com/video/Uatk-iXpBWU/v-deo.html

Actually you can also say why is Dog and not Kulu, so you need to go and find the meaning of the word way back. And where the word beggins. Thats why in the Bible says, with the verb came everything, or something like that. The word is the way to create something . So, maybe a dog , now we know what and who and how he is. Is a Dog.

Love how our sangha provides such a wonderful space for the younger generation. Perhaps sitting lower down, at their height, and speaking with them as wise young adults and not at them as kids would make these beautiful conversations even more brilliant. I'm this case, Luc was certainly yoo to the challenge :)

Why can’t the Monks answer the question for the child? Because Luke is as Buddha expressing thru the body of this small boy, Luke.., and the Monks are mere students. Start with what is a dog? Is it the fur, the bones, the teeth? The bark? Or is it “something else” that we name dog, expressing dog nature? What is that “something else” that expresses through the form of and nature of dog? That is the question. It must be discovered by your very own self, Luke- in this very life. Why is Everything, Everything? What is this “Everything”... is it different from That which expresses through the form of Dog’s nature? Luke, you must answer this for yourself. This is The path of Buddha who asked the very same questions...By asking this Deep and profound question it shows you have already gone very far....Silence.....

The kid asked a great question. Why is a dog a dog = where did this universe came from?
It is our binary mind that differentiates a dog to be a dog, and then further differentiates the cat is different than a dog. But in reality, there is no such thing as differences. We are all one and only one consciousness. He asked a great question that we don’t have as answers for, that’s why they all laughed. You do you, kid. Keep asking questions!

The boy may have been waiting for the full lecture, he understands enough, but how can you go into nama rupa with a young boy besides to emphasize that beyond name and form, everything exisits in its isness, and that that isness is beautiful, natural, and comprised as much of its environment as the thing we might try to isolate and designate within the environment. That he already knows. Things have names so they can be designated, but that he probably knows, the more important issue is why would we designate things? To love and appreciate their nature.
