Bro the flowerhorn attacking u at the end made my day. Thanks for the vid. I personally use the kitchen micro fibre towels and glass cleaning sponges. But to get out the super green and hard to remove algae i think u need scraper...

I use tule (the stuff used to make bridal veils) from the fabric store, its simple, does not scratch glass or acrylic, it is cheap, lasts for years and the best thing I have ever found to removed algae from tank glass.

I was unaware that there were any magic eraser types that did not include cleaner. Get one wet with regular water and rub your finger on it and it definitely has some sort of chemical in there. Warnings on the original tell you to rinse surface off after use if it will be used with food- so that means one of two things, some type of chemical involved, or microplastic type stuff left behind.

Here in the UK, I use a small pan scrubby which has a more abrasive side like your shower scrubber thing but also has a soft sponge side too - never causes a problem with damage to the silicone seams or scratching but gets algae off the glass easily and safely - Obviously it wasn't one that has any additional cleaning products and it was bought new so I was happy it was safe to use in the tank.

Those white sponges work excellent. Also a long razor scraper for the area where the sand meets the glass. That's the tough part for getting scratches.

I use those foam pot scrubbers from Walmart or Canadian Tire. They are fantastic! They are soft and gentle with just enough umph for the tough spots. I toss them in my washing machine once I'm done. Works great on salt buildup as well.

I use a dishwashing scrubber. The cheap one from the grocery store with a hollow handle you're supposed to put soap in. It's like your shower scrubber but for smaller tanks.

For that really strong short green algae in fresh water, if it's been neglected I've found a razor blade on with a handle works the best so far for me, I also use the plastic card on easier to get off stuff. (Glass aquariums)

I just used a magnet and it does great. But I've also used a Bounty paper towel before I got the magnet. It also helps get the algae off of leaves.

  • @jeffdickenson2073

I use a Razer blade for tough stuff then a magnet with a patch of cloth on both sides of the magnet. Additionally, on the cloth on the outside, I add fritz's. Has always worked like a charm for me.

I use baby platy fish, snails, java ferns, and pothos plants. Plus keeping the tank only lightly stocked (by not feeding them too much). I haven't had to scrub the glass in years and it is clean as can be. The baby platy's (fry) are so small and omnivorous that they eat the smallest of algae, coupled with the snails and all algea is always eaten.

I used to spend ages doing it with a magnet but I just scrunch up a lil bit of filter wool now. Way quicker and less worried about scratching it.

Thank you!!! I have glass curved aquarium and it WAS nightmare to clean, magnet just don't work. So i was cleaning with razor, it was really slow and i need to be careful around silicone. And i use magic eraser, which I am using for car interior and it was like magic! Clean everything and i mean everything, silicone, glass, hoses and even artificial background and when it was too dirty i just clean in the separated bucket. Thanks you again!

I have used a razor blade with handle and a plain sponge with a abrasive pad on the otherside no chemical.. most everyone else uses these sponges for washing dishes. But there great for my tropical tanks.

Tunze care magnets were a gamechanger for me. They work with a magnet but they use two scraper attachments instead of a pad. There is no chance of picking up a sand particle and scratching your glass or acrylic.

@thekingofdiy Depending on what/who is in the tank I use Plecos. Bristlenoses for up to Discus, Sailfin (and multiples of) for larger more aggressive Cichlids. Never had to clean algae off glass for over 30 years, also don't have much algae anyway.

That made me miss my flowerhorn (now passed away). Ironically, never bit me. Only bit the algae scrubber. Oh and IMO I never use magnets. Some how sand always gets in there and I can't feel or sense if there is dirt or sand in it and that causes lots of unintended horrific scratches. I only use shower scrubbers (algae scrubbers) or plastic cards.

Are those magic erasers called magic sponges? I'm in Europe, so not sure if we're talking about the same sponge :)
In Poland we've used a common shaving razor on some kind of a handle for decades. Now they dont even sell these handles.. Of course it would scratch the acrylic, but glass is fine.

I never clean my windows! I have 4 aquariums with bristlenose plecos for more than 10 years. They keep my windows clean and also are very fond of zuchini (they also eat food tablets). Also very peaceful fish. If you don’t want to clean your windows (and wood) consider these little fellows (do not put your aquarium in the sun and do not buy their brothers who can become huge. The good ones are called ancistrus max 8-10 cm and not plectostomus by their latin name. I remember I had one temporary aquarium for plants without my ancistrusses, and indeed al lot of algae on the glass…
