Building the Biggest MFT Top Possible

- In this video, we conclude the build for my combination outfield table, assembly table and workbench. I show you how I made a 3/4" thick MFT style top with black laminate, MFT style dog holes, and how I attached it to the cabinets with 80/20 extrusion. In the second half of the video, I'll give you a tour of the finished product, and share with you what I would do differently were I to build this again. I am in the process of building my first MFT/assembly table and I am making the bottom a torsion box. I plan on having 2x6 stringers where the casters will go and glue and screw the system together. Then I will build on top of that. With a bulked-up base, I am hoping to avoid the flex you experienced. Thank you so much for pointing it out I was on the fence on whether or not to do that.

I noticed you put the bolts through the MDF into the extruded aluminum, but then you covered the whole MDF with formica. Are you now not able to remove the top from the extruded aluminum?
Bob, you're off to a great start. Your delivery, filming, story presentation and editing are all of a high quality. I appreciate the clarity of your narration, the obvious intelligence, thought, preparation and effort you're putting into these. One small aspect I might suggest you think about -- and this is very common, even among some highly experienced UA-camrs -- is the length of your videos. By this I mean working to tighten up the through line. In the scheme of your progress and the overall sophistication of what you've already achieved, these are trivial points -- but I can tell you're a guy who very much sweats the details. Keep it up. Great video and am looking forward to doing a similar project. One question on your 8020 installation. I think you used butt joints for the 8020. Pls correct me if I’m wrong. Wouldn’t this prevent you from inserting track clamps (festool or otherwise) into the one that is “blocked”? I’ve seen in other videos where they opened up the channel wide enough to get the track side of a clamp inserted but I’m wondering if you did this some other (easier) way. Great idea on the overhang to avoid conflict w dust collection for your future Sawstop; would lose too much vertical storage space!! Did you use a swept 90 right out of the saw to minimize overhang?
The butt joint does prevent me from using the track for clamping features on the sides, but I don’t need or want to do any clamping on the sides of the bench, so I was ok with that. There is definitely a way to do it so you could use all 4 sides if desired.
My saw currently has a dust outlet on the side of the saw. Eventually with a Sawstop I will use a swept 90 as you mentioned.

Very nice. You placed the 1/4” down to stop dust / debris from entering storage. Just curious because you concluded with covering potential things you might change . Did you incorporate any means of removing dust / debris or dropped small items? An opening to vacuum? Mine is more similar to a Paulk design and I will have screws etc fall through holes, but is open to retrieve. How are you addressing that? Thanks and keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching! There’s an overhang on either side, and 2/3 of it has the holes. So far, between that and a telescoping magnet, screws haven’t been a problem, and I use my compressor to blow it out. Works pretty well.
