Thanks, I just installed a vinyl soffit and was looking to buy a facia-cover, but couldn’t find anything. This is “just what the Dr. ordered!” Great video!
Another great one! I had no idea that such a thing as a handheld brake existed! Definitely going to get one; I can think of a number of uses for it. I think a lot of people don't realize that this metal trim covering is used a LOT. You see it especially in older homes fitted with vinyl siding during a remodel. Typically any exposed wood like the fascia, rake boards, window trim end up covered, but it just ends up cut around things like storm windows and any fittings (or like in your case, the awning). Sometimes there's caulk or sealant along those seams, but other times not. It's worth looking over/inspecting every once in a while. Never good to have water getting in behind the metal and rotting the wood.
Hey Marc, thanks for the comments. Yeah, I definitely have additional practice to put in prior to being proficient with replacing flashing in the different use cases as you outlined. It is a very handy skill to have for sure 👍
Nice job. I saw those benders at the store, but wasn’t sure if they worked well or not. Thanks for that. My local window and door place will make/bend any piece, shape or length of aluminum you want. Prices are about the same as big box stores, but the aluminum is a much thicker gauge.
Do they sometimes put nails in the top behind the gutter b4 the gutter is hung? Iv got to pull some down to fish wires and im hoping i dnt need to remove gutters for some reason. What do you think?
So I have some cracked paint in my facia in front of home. Can I just add this aluminum board on top of existing fascia or it needs to be removed? And does this aluminum comes in white already and does not need to be painted?
Hey Scott! My parents got a set of 8 cameras to set up at my house, and it falls to me to install because I am the 'tech and crafty' guy (lol/ugg) to install. The problem is, the house is two stories tall, and has wallpaper on the interior. I have watched a number of videos about how to drop down wires through walls, but not much on going through multiple levels. I was thinking the best rout would be this: My server is upstairs, drag all wires to the attic, drop most cameras to the 2nd floor from there, and say one to the front door. My issue is, I am completely unsure of how to bring the wire to the outside of the house/physically get up there safely. (It is a wooden house, no brick or stone.) If you have a suggested place to look up this stuff, or have your own recommendations, I would love to know. Thank you for your videos! Somewhat similar, I am interested in routing Ethernet cables, and possibly some more power outlets in the house.
Sounds like a fun project. I also moonlight as tech support for my family 😀. Could you post this same question maybe with a few pictures on our Facebook Group “Everyday Home Repairs Community?”
Great video Scott. I didn't realize it was this easy or that the breaking tool existed. I have to clad a couple garage window sills. Where did you get the flashing with the white side. All I am seeing at Home Depot is the raw aluminum that is supposed to be paintable.
You should see one which has brown on one side and white on the other. Usually available at all the home improvement stores. Best of luck with the project 👍
so you only bend it once? What if I am covering a wooden facia board that has like a quarter inch hang before the soffit starts? Do you think I should bend it so it goes up behind the facia board an eighth of an inch or a quarter inch?
Hmmm, personally I wouldn't go the staple route. I would expect it to be a bit hard to get the right depth through the aluminum and wood in addition to the corrosion issue as most are for interior work.
Recent subscriber here, I am trying to figure out how to repair my gutters. The home is 96 years old but in 2008 a new roof was installed and an aluminum fascia was installed. But tons of water comes down BEHIND the gutters. I only have easy access to the gutters on the porch and it appears that the shingles are too short, is there an economical fix?
Oh, sorry this would be a company which focuses on installing gutters to catch and divert the rain water coming off your roof. Some times roofing companies do this but often there a separate business which only make and install gutters. They will have all the supplies and tools needed to easily do this job. 👍
Good video. You showed how easy it really is, which helped me with my repair on the front of our house. Thanks!
Super satisfying video. I don't have a need to make that repair but now I know how simple it is if I ever need to! Thanks for the content!
No problem, I appreciate the support. 👍
Not sure if I'm going to try to fix it myself but, THANK YOU! Nice tutorial!

Thanks, happy to help 👍
great short video. Thanks!
Clear and to the point. Very good tutorial, thanks!

So.. true!
thank you this video is just what I needed!
Perfect video: short, concise, and straight to the point! It's 3 minute long - all it takes to star me running! Thank you so much!!!
Happy to help 👍
Very nice Scott! Great job! 👍👍👍😁✌🏻
Thanks George 👍
Very helpful
Awesome, I didn't realize a tool like that existed. I have some garage flashing that's damaged but never really thought about replacing it until now.
Yeah, this was my first time as well. Check the duct work section and they should have a 12” and 18” option. Super handy.

How do you install the trim at the pick of the house,?
Mine have hex screws? I need to fix mine should I use a nail or the hex screws?
Tks!!!

What about the rotted wood you covered up?
How do you replace or repair the soffit?
Is there a special reason not to use a screw (to subsitute a nail)?

That's the first I've seen that hand break tool also. Only ones I was aware of were the bigger ones.

I would just match the rest of the home. With the same bender you can easily do 1" and 1/2"
just what i needed to know who would i call to do this kind of work?
A gutter crew should be able to knock this type of job out without much issue.
Would you ever use staples? Is there any staples that don’t rust on aluminum?
Hmmm, personally I wouldn't go the staple route. I would expect it to be a bit hard to get the right depth through the aluminum and wood in addition to the corrosion issue as most are for interior work.
Is it bothersome that there is a gap where the facia separates? Seems like that should have been fixed first?
The difference in $$$

Install a drip edge with a lip. Only other thing you could do, is go along slipping a starter shingle undwrneath, to give a proper overhang.
@@zzz7zzz9 Thanks so much for the reply - I'll give that a try.
instead of that small version of a brake, try out a 2x4 with a 1" slight sawed in the middle bruv
Hopefully, if you do this, you have drip edge on your roof and no gutter screws in the way of your facia.
what is a gutter crew ? Thanks

Any idea where you can buy a handheld brake like that? Can’t seem to find it at Home Depot or Amazon. Have a link?
Here is a 12" amzn.to/3UCZatL if you are stopping by a store look in the HVAC duct work section. Best of luck on the project!
The title states Aluminum Fascia Cover, but nothing shown securing the metal cover over the fascia board!
Hate to be “that guy” but… nail the bottom not the face.
I came for this comment. I’m told don’t face nail, in fact a guy told me to screw it
