We used to just punch the nail in with a nail set. When I solo hung fascia cap I used a couple scratch awls to tack it in position then check if it was perfect before putting nails in. You can also leave those trim nails proud while you check before committing to finish driving them. The awls make starting the nails easy and and leaves some tolerance around the nail shank for expansion.
thats quick, but for a smaller hole you can use a ball ended diamond bit or small carbide bit to drill a hole in the center of the nail. the top just pops off then. you can reuse the hole even. tape around the screw so it doesnt drag out across your surface unexpectedly if using a diamond bit. 3mm carbide would do it lovely.
I've always read that you shouldn't face nail the fascia as it provides a path for water to get in and rot. You should fasten from the bottom if possible. The drip edge or gutters will hold the fascia at the top.
Adam I wish my builder had listened to you! The only good thing they face-nailed the thin metal drip edge only where the drip edge overalapped the next piece..
This was really clever! Thank you so much! This spring I have soffit work to remove and I can see that on the lip of the fascia there are the white aluminum screws that go through the vinyl soffit....I will check out where to get that handy tool you used! 💯👍🇨🇦
Hi Chris, another awesome video. Couldn’t you use the same tool at a smaller size to cut the nail head itself, so the fascia comes off with the original hole intact (ie. no enlarged hole in the fascia panel?).
Some *%#&^%! put nails in an old door hinge. It has also rusted and been painted. What a mess. I am thinking a punch like this will not work on a hinge since it is much thicker than the metal shown here, and I wouldn't want to change the hole size even if possible. This is an old ball tip hinge and I have resurrected the other hinge on the door, but can't get this hinge off because of the nails. The punch set shown here is intended for leather. Will it really cut thru metal, like the nail head?
It's not intended to cut through the nail head. Only the thin sheet around it. And yes it's designed for soft metals like this as well as leather. Ace Hardware sells them.
Or..... you could use a common nail set and punch the nail through the aluminum leaving exactly the size hole of the nail head and no larger. Almost everyone who has ever done any kind of trim work has a nail set. And if you don't you shouldn't own a hammer.
Will this dimple the aluminum? My hunch is yes. Aluminum is crazy soft to begin with and capping is amazingly thin. I think that's the whole point of this video in the first place.
excellent. I can't find: How do I temporarily remove aluminum soffit? i think i can get it out if I un-bend the 90-degree bend, but I'm quite certain I could never get that bend again, especially with the piece still in place on the wall. How do I temporarily remove aluminum soffit?
oh - perhaps removing the nails, as per your video, will allow me to move the soffit so i can angle it to then bring it out. the nails holding the soffit are not covered by drip edge, so water could enter there, but perhaps it doesn't matter since the water would only contact aluminum...

Well done! Saw the link on Amazon. Smaller (6 piece set) should be adequate.
What is the link?
That's a SOLUTION!! Thank you!!
love it. Exactly what I was looking for. The Puchy thingy. Thanks

Possibly. My set of bits didn't go that small.
Does it work on steel bands that are flush nails? Thanks
Will that trick work for removing nails from plywood on a roof. I've seen the nail gun method but I don't have a nail gun
very nice...thank you
You can use the same hole to install new nail with larger head. Either pull old nail or just hit it sideways with punch.

@@lou-nc4rc haha same, what did you end up doing?
Brilliant!
Where did you find the hole punches? I am having difficulty locating them.

Thank you. Found them on Ebay too at half the price. Appreciate you taking the time to reply.
@@johnculberson3531 Can you post the link for eBay please?

Bill - or anyone - can you reply to Wade's question?
@@WTFIsThisGuyDoing233 awesome name
That's a horrible idea. It would definitely deform the metal. Personally I would drill the head of the screw off.
