Fifty (50) years!! Happy Anniversary to Neil and his band!
Statistics have shown that in the United States, two million records were sold, and it was number 5 on the charts. However, in Australia, it charted to number 1 for twenty-nine weeks, best-selling album in 1973 and 3rd best-selling album in 1974! (4:32)
The memories so ingrained with the written word and poses of still shots of this amazing entertainer so cleverly inserted on the two screens opposite the two ends of the stage shown between 6:00 - 7:04. The details of the numbers of "tree people" (5,000 people in the trees at 2:00). They risked life and limb to be entertained by "one light that shines brighter than the others" at 10:08.
Imagine, no seats were available for Neil's parents, Rose and Kieve Diamond, at his debut at 8:55. They just "walked around enjoying the sights and sounds".
Nothing was spared for quality sound, for Neil provided quadraphonic sound so everyone could hear at every angle. (7:17)
A befitting conclusion to this memorable video was the 60 Minutes Reminiscence and Neil's feelings during the "Prologue" at 13:00, "Fantastic, just enjoying this music, I could do it again, surely". And that he did! Ending his interview, waving, "God bless, what an experience".

Firstly, thank you Donita for your invaluable input into the making of this video, truly appreciative. Thanks for your comments in highlighting the various sections of the video, these serve to draw attention for viewers who may others not notice of be aware of these inclusions. You are only too aware of the doubts and insecurities that crept into my mind in the final weeks as my self-imposed deadline approached. Kept viewing the video that I generated and had on my PC over and over again. Critical in my search for flaws/errors. Trying times indeed... 🙄
All said and done, I'm relatively pleased with the result. Now there for posterity.
Incidentally, I don't as a rule pester Neil and Katie with my videos; never including them in my tweets. Made an exception on this occasion considering the bearing and importance Hot August Night had on Neil, his family and others' lives; his orphanage included. Take care, Doug

This album was one of my all time favorites of Neil Diamond, but I love all his music and was lucky enough to see him in concert. My mother loved his music too, and I am so grateful I was able to take her to hear him in concert. It was one of the highlights of her life, and she had a hard life. Thank you, Neil Diamond for making some great memories for her before she died. Neil Diamond will never go out of style!

Excellent Excellent job Doug! I had no doubt that you would come up with something great for this very special event...
It's hard to believe that it's been 50 years since I went to my first Neil Diamond concert. I still remember enjoying a nice picnic at Griffith Park before the show and then walking into the Greek Theater! At first I couldn't figure out why we were listening to classical music while the audience filed in to find their seats! I remember turning to my wife and jokingly asking if we were in the right place! As the Prologue kept building and finally hit it's suspended climax, the acoustic guitar kicked in, I turned to my wife again and sad " Here we Go "! Neil Diamond put us on a musical roller coaster ride of love songs, humorous songs, and and thought provoking powerful songs!
At one point during the concert Neil said, "We will do things for you that you will not forget for a while" ! He was right, it's been 50 years now and I haven't forgotten! Thanks again Doug, for taking me back to that great concert....
Firstly, thank you Tom for drawing my attention to the fact that it was 50 years ago, how remiss of me, 😔that Neil performed at those amazing series of concerts at the Greek theatre. Thanks also for your kind comments Tom. It was a task deciding just how I would approach the monumental task. I did so with apprehension and trepidation, even dread. The thought that it would be a fizzer (Aussie slang - failure/fiasco) plagued me. I am grateful to Donita Bell for her kind assistance. Worked on it for 8 weeks. Spent the final 2 weeks tinkering, even in the last minutes before I uploaded it, with it, casting a critical eye over possible errors and flaws... image and audio wise. My self-doubt being my biggest critic/enemy. Had to include the image of Neil in white suit 6:22 as you had indicated that he wore white on the night you attended.😊
I hope you clicked on the SHOW MORE link beneath the video as I suggested, for my notes. Thank again Tom, without your timely reminder, this video would never have become a reality. Thank you.

Ever since heard, hot August Night in 1972, I bought the LP and fell in love with Neil Diamond there and then.

I was there first time I saw Neil have been to the Greek many times since then
This video was put on today. The album was recorded August 24, released December 9. Neil Diamind is 81. I got that album immediately & I remember my friend getting the album for me & saying he liked it, like it was yesterday. You was there first time, I wish I was there. The greatest concert ever & the great sound, but not filmed.

I can't believe it's going to be the 50th anniversary. I was only two years old when it was recorded. I didn't become a Neil Diamond fan until 1980 when "The Jazz Singer" came out and then that was it. I was hooked! HAN was one of the first records I ever got and back in those days, it was the double LP someone gave me. The problem is, I only had one of the records so I only got the middle portion of the concert. Eventually, I got the cassette I think and then my mind was blown when I heard the entirety of it back then. I was thrilled at the 40th anniversary edition with missing songs. Like Neil himself, I'm so incredibly disappointed that there isn't video footage of this concert. I keep hoping that somewhere, somehow, someone recorded at least some of it on Super 8 or whatever. It's really one of the best live albums ever recorded and video of it would be a dream. Long live Neil Diamond! May God watch over him and allow us to have him for as long as possible.

Doug, how marvellous! Brought the experience home to my brain and my soul while watching, wishing I had been lucky enough to be one of the “tree people”. Beautiful intro beautiful music, beautiful words, beautiful everything! I kept pausing the video, savouring the image of that venue, the words....oh Neil, WHAT made you decide not to have it filmed? Why, oh why?? What a “missed” I can't say it any other way! !
But maybe, just maybe, that’s what adds to how Super Special it is.
And WOW Doug, you’ve done such an outstanding job of bringing the experience to us. The video makes it obvious how hard you worked on this. And how much of your own soul you have put into it. It's wonderful👏
And yes, that cover image of Mr. S..y Diamond.....! .Agree that Neil is....not some “oversexed” shock rocker....he is one of the very few “oversoul’d” (😊) soul-shakers of this world🙏, who certainly shook mine from the moment I heard him first.
The “Extra Minutes” - oh you lucky lucky lady, Allison Langdon. To be there with him in person, no words to describe how that must have been. Well, to see him there reminiscing, remembering perfectly every little nuance of the music and how the experience was, it was so poignant, my heart just felt pretty full, and what do you know - as is habitual - eyes were and are still full of tears. I’m reliving something I haven’t even lived. All I can say is: Thank you Doug, Neil Diamond fan extraordinaire. Your video brought us the experience (and I have to watch it again without pausing so much :) And Thank You Neil Diamond for who you are, who you were, always have been and always will be🙏
Thanks very much for you wonderful comments Nas, much appreciated. Acting on a suggestion from Tom Bowyer, I contacted Donita Bell seeking her expertise in research to assist me. This she kindly did. The video took shape over a period of 8 weeks. Partially completed in approximately 6 weeks with incessant tinkering over minor changes in the final two with ideas/inspiration creeping in as I worked on my ride-on mower or performing other mundane but necessary tasks. In these final weeks, self-doubt began to creep in giving me the heebie-jeebies, wondering if I had done that amazing concert justice of left it wanting.
As to Neil not having the concert filmed, here is my response to another viewer -
_Had the show been videoed, the whole mystique would vanished; extinguished, the show laid bare. I draw the similarities to reading a good book and then seeing the movie, which generally is a disappointment. Why? Simple, as one reads a book, it plays out in our mind; our imagination... no limits, unlike a movie. Hot August Night will forever LIVE in our memory banks... as we imagine what it must have been like._
_Another point worth noting, videos weren't a big thing back in the early 70s. Videos (VHS and Beta) only took off in the late 70s - early 80s. And bearing in mind that the first music video made its debut in 1984, I remember Neil stating in an interview that he believed that music videos were a passing fad, that they would soon come to pass. He had to be convinced, virtually dragged kicking and screaming, to do his first ever music video, 'Headed For The Future' in 1986. Therefore, understandable why filming Hot August Night simply wasn't even a consideration back in 1972. I rest my case.😌_

She's obviously done a lot of important research on this because there is so much information in it which has added to the high quality of the video. Thank you Donita - and again Thank You Doug.
Also, even though it was a few years later, the Thank You Australia video does exist and I am so grateful. It gives us an idea of how Neil looked performing at the time and boy was he SUPERB!!!😊👏🏼❤️🙏🏼

The task of Doug to re-live a musical event of fifty years ago was quite a challenge and when asked to assist him with pertinent information, I was more than willing to research it. First, this intro is a killer, just like Love at the Greek. Listening to either of them gives me goosebumps that I just can't shake off. Playing with a symphony orchestra behind him along with his regular band members, the 2 that first come to mind are Rennie Press and Alan Lindgren, and years ago I could have named them all, because they all brought special talent to his songs. These 2 concerts at the Greek are the best I have EVER heard by anyone. My musical library is huge, but ND will always be my #1. What makes me smile on this is when Neil speaks to the "tree people", he waits........then "are you still there tree people"?......"we're here"!! is heard in the distance (not sure if those were their exact words, but I know ND's are correct. The audience got a laugh out of it as well.

The greatest Neil diamond album by a country mile. I would go so far to say its the greatest live album EVER!! shame mr D did not listen to those who told him to televise it or video it. Pretty stupid mistake only to be repeated when he first played Woburn abbey in 77😂

Had the show been videoed, the whole mystique of HAN would have vanished; extinguished, the show laid bare. Not only that, but we would have a poor quality analogue 4:3 aspect ratio, not digital 16;9 aspect ratio, widescreen high definition. Totally unsatisfactory. As stated by several others and myself, Ryan, Neil’s first and far, far-away greatest concert at Woburn Abbey on Saturday, 2nd of July, 1977 was filmed. The film director, William Freidkin, best known for that high-grossing horror-schlock that was ‘The Exorcist’, was there - and gone by 8.30pm. Cameras aplenty on raised platforms but far too strong a sun, centre stage, prevented Neil from coming out until 8.48. He simply did not want to be forced to shade his eye’s for the first 6 or 7 numbers. Neil’s stage entrance in front of about at least, 75,000 perhaps 80,000 is there to see in his (late) 1977 t.v. and later video ‘I’m Glad Your Here With Me Tonight’. I was about row 14 stage left and it remains easily in my top three N.D. concerts; quite possibly the very best of the mere 27 that I was blessed to attend. I made it to The Greek for the last two of five in August ‘12 (thanks, always to I.G. in London - you know who you are) a 37 year wait and dream come true.
There is no finer live album anywhere; this masterpiece somehow, improves with almost each and every listening.

Thanks Doug and all behind the scenes who contributed to this brilliant compilation. This has always been the album that captured me to being a ND tragic after hearing it for the first time on a bus journey to work in country South Australia way back in 1973.

Hello Doug! What a video! Perfect! I will not presume to compliment you on the technics. They must have been exemplary since the result was so perfect!
Since the video was published I've seen it several times.
I feel that the HAN 1 was essential in NEIL 's career, if not in his life. He had been so unsure of himself, low self esteem, to the point that he didn't have the concert taped on camera. He didn"t even get his parents' seats. As I see it he never expected the concert to be such a huge success. That was what he needed to believe in himself. A changing point in his life.
Not only was the "house" sold out but there were thousands of people listening and watching in the parking lots and on the trees! That must have been like a balm for his fragile ego! To have proven proof that he was loved, that he was worthy of the sacrifice of being perched up a tree for some two hours or more... He says it in the album " ... I'm singing for you, too".
Going back and forward with the tape, we come to that lovely and moving "60 minutes" piece. We see an old Neil, fragile, a lifetime on his shoulders. Sacrifices, divorces, children, grand children, law suits, tours, death, birth. He re-lives the whole original concert and I wonder how often he has done that in those 40-50 years! Very often, surely. He is there, listening to the crowd as they settle in their seats, then the silence as the string quartet begins to play... then, the organ... and he conducts it all as if was happening before hus eyes at that moment. He smiles. He picks up the guitar and he plays... he firmly believed he could do it again!
Those two halves of the video, the "then" and the "now", so pungently complementing each other! INEFFABLE!

Hot August Night will forever LIVE in our memory banks... as we imagine what it must have been like.
Another point worth noting, videos weren't a big thing back in the early 70s. Videos (VHS and Beta) only took off in the late 70s - early 80s. And bearing in mind that the first music video made its debut in 1984, I remember Neil stating in an interview that he believed that music videos were a passing fad, that they would soon come to pass. He had to be convinced, virtually dragged kicking and screaming, to do his first ever music video, 'Headed For The Future' in 1986. Therefore, understandable why filming Hot August Night simply wasn't even a consideration back in 1972. I rest my case.😌
Thanks to Neil, we have the amazingly brilliant 4-Channel quadrophonic audio of that amazing once-in-a-lifetime concert to last a lifetime. When CDs became a thing, Hot August Night was the very first CD I purchased... thrilled to be rid of the usual pops and scratches. The alleged "sanitary coldness" of critics did not faze me. I don't much like the Headed for the Future video. I understand why Neil didn't want to make. He said so in interview.
But afterall we do have the most important of the HAN.. the sound. And of course your video does it justice!

Thanks for your comment Louise. No hurry. Take all the time you need to glean all of the information therein. Though the video is approximately 17 minutes in length, it took me a couple of weeks to compile it from go to woe (whoa), sourcing information from credible sources, collection images and recollections from fans privileged to have been there on those hot August nights.
Sorry to learn that your eyesight hasn't improved much. I have to have cataract surgery soon. Veronica had hers done last year and is quite content. Unfortunately, with images the bearing a multitude of colours make font colour selection difficult. I decided on red as that was the theme colour of Hot August Night.

Yes, my cataract surgeries were not what I hoped. After just a year I had to have laser procedures on both eyes to clean away debris ...they say it's fairly common after the initial surgery. I still don't see well enough, especially on computer and phone screens. Hope yours is very successful! Happy Veronica's was!

Had the show been videoed, the whole mystique would vanished; extinguished, the show laid bare. Hi Patricia, Sorry to learn of your affliction. A couple of points:-
1. It is extremely difficult to select a colour for the captions simply because images have varied colours. Black lettering would be hardly visible on dark coloured images, the same would apply to white letterings on white/light coloured images.
2. Red was the Hot August Night theme colour.
3. Might help if you pause the slide that contains captions to enable you to read at your own pace. Good luck.
