In response to Sam Miller's question at 52:35: Possibly consider the BMW Z3/Z4, MG TF or Toyota MR2/MRS for a bit of mid-engined goodness, or even the MX5 MK1 or MK3 if you've only had Mk2s and want to switch it up. All can be found within your budget.
I'm guessing this podcast has been recorded a few weeks ago because Alex now announces he got his long termer BMW, sold the Vitara and did the filming with Jack and his micra and those videos came online in the past 2 weeks
Think they said before that they record 2 back to back every time. Plus if you go back to the one uploaded 2 weeks ago Gareth's Apple Juice is there and is still in the same place at the start of this one.
I think 100% the pandemic has completely ruined people's driving, it has been very noticable as restrictions have eased here in Ireland! And guys, these podcasts are just getting better and better, genuinely my favourite UA-cam notification to see these days
Is the Karoq diesel Ethan? They’re is a delay on the Diesels Skoda’s because it automatically warms the glow plugs before starting and won’t attempt to start until the plugs are at the optimum temperature deemed by the engine control unit.
Would definitely love to see a video of you guys retaking your test. That could be very entertaining. Maybe all these bad habits you guys seem to talk about could picked up, especially Ethan jumping red lights 😉 (which I've definitely done before. Not the same thing, but I've definitely, accidently, ran a red light 😖). Also, on the creeping forward thing, I agree with the emailer. When I see a stationary car move forward less than foot, it just think "whhhy? Just stop". I also really appreciate Barney's email. I have recently been trying improve my driving by slowing down a bit, making better decisions, giving myself, and everyone else more room, and having a little more patience, especially if someone fucks up. We all make mistakes. However, I've always been patient and I wait for the right time to over take a cyclist. I don't give a toss about people having to wait, or myself for that matter. One of my biggest pet peeves is people over taking on a corner or on the brow of a hill.
About those "creepers" The ones I understand the least are the ones who creep over the stopping line until their car is almost half over the line already. It's, like, why? The light's still red. You're not getting anywhere faster like this. Just fucken wait. If there's a red light camera, it might even get you for entering the intersection while the light is red.
I'm glad I got taught by an old guy, we did extra lessons on different types of roads and got so much advice about etiquette. Most people I knew learnt to drive with a school where it was a box ticking exercise. They are terrible drivers and only getting worse with time.
I live in Indiana in the United States and it's actually illegal to middle lane hog. So you don't just get the lights flashed at you, but you get a ticket. Love the channel, keep up the great work guys.
Could you re-add the timeline labels like you had on one of the older podcast videos please? It's really helpful for some overview, especially if I do not have an hour to watch everything but still want to see my favorite sections. :-)
Anticipation is taught in lessons, not only to observe the movement of the other vehicles and their lights, also pedestrian lights and whether the green man will stop your lights changing yeah.
Still getting funnier with every episode, keep it up gents 👍 If you can find the time to keep making these I will find the time to watch, enjoy and like them ✌
I’ve set up quite a few temporary traffic lights for roadworks and a common reason for all lights being stuck on red is that if a car jumps a red light the system reacts by turning all the other lights red, and then tries to reset to its programmed sequence, but when the lights are far away from each other or there is no line of sight, they cannot reconnect to each other and cannot reset
My friend creeps at red lights. He usually sees a red light and slows down to a creep to see if he can catch the green before coming to a stop. We have had a couple a people that have honked. 😂.
as a lovely man on a motorcycle forum I'm on used to say "if everyone drove like there's a spike rather than a airbag in the centre of the steering wheel driving standards would be way better"
In Tasmania, Australia I noticed a dip in driving quality even though we didn't really have a lockdown just heavy restrictions, just more of an heavy encouragement to work from home and avoid going out. But I agree, driving modern cars are mind numbing, I have driven my mums 2020 Hyundai Tucson (Auto) and its just so mind numbing vs my manual BRZ. Having a manual car is so more engaging and forces you to focus on the road.
On the creeping forward at lights, sometimes its to stop the stupid auto start/stop. Admittedly I've done it a few times when I didn't want to disable the start/stop, but I knew the lights were going to change in a few seconds, so I stop a little short of the lights (less than a car length) and creep forward a bit.
For a 2k car, look for a Citroen DS3, wife will love it, cheap to run, surprisingly comfortable, has a biggest boot in its class. Might be a bit more money, but can def. find some at that price
Regarding Jeremy's question, I recently asked myself the same question. I'd been driving (and fixing) a 1997 Fiesta for 10 years and decided to replace it with something more modern. So a couple of weeks ago I bought a 2013 Citroën C1. I did spend £4k for a top of the range model with low miles and service history, but there are loads out there (not to mention Peugeot 107s and Toyota Aygos, too) for less money. They're cheap to insure and fuel (easily 50+ mpg) and after 2012 road tax is free.
I’m a delivery driver for a local supermarket too and have been since the start of lockdown last year. The amount of impatient arseholes that are out on the roads. We stop our van for 2 minutes and you have people honking, screaming and shouting at you. The amount of verbal abuse I’ve dealt with over the past year from ignorant drivers when I’m trying to help people live is unbelievable.

Other reasons why industry implemented electronic parking brakes instead of traditional one, except cost reduction through DfM and create an environment for autonomy that Gareth mentioned, are(that I could think of): -packaging space: this can also be related to cost reduction but also saving space in the center console area and also allowing for more modern trim parts design for interior. -Gareth mentioned less parts but it is also less movement between parts, wear which is mechanical and therefore in resulting in less need of maintenance; however, there are some cars where either electronic module/switch /calipers with actuators fail, which could overall result in a more expensive solution than traditional one due to the price of expensive electronic parts. I was with my driving instructer recently just below 30MPH and some Vauxhaull driver decided to overtake and break the speed limit just before it went up to 50MPH.
Probably the most "thought out" episode of Car Throttle that I've seen so far - particularly in relation to "inexplicable" behaviours such as driving through red traffic lights. I did the *exact* same thing that Ethan said happened to him once, and then questioned "why did I just do that?" These are my thoughts on this: I think that there's a subconscious human *need* to exercise our sense of autonomy now and again - particularly if you've spent your entire life being "controlled" (ie through "rules", legislation, arbitration, etc.) Sooner or later - particularly if someone questions a matter but receives no satisfactory explanation as to _why_ (in this case, I mean the forced ignoring of your own common sense), then eventually, the "act" begins to drop, and decisions such as exercising your own autonomy to make decisions based on your own lived experiences, will inevitably kick in. I may have mentioned this before here, but there is a difference between _driving,_ and _travelling_ (as far as common law may be concerned). This may have something to do with it... Existing under common law, requires no driving licence, MOT, motor insurance, REGIStration etc. Whilst it might not necessarily be a _legal_ requirement (it is certainly _lawful),_ it might be worth considering using a bond (such as your birth certificate (it's printed on bonded paper)) to fall back on, should you genuinely be involved in a collision to which you are responsible. Do you think it would be a good idea in your next produced podcast to discuss the freeman philosophy and motoring in general? The standards of motoring may very well (gradually) begin increasing again, when the motoring *community* work together, to address all motoring related affairs, that directly involve US as motorists, rather than the "Do this, don't do that, go this speed, don't drive through that"-type existence that we live through on a daily basis - causing REAL problems with each other on the road? Many thanks.
@Ross Bourne Mechanical handbrake is not automatic. I can choose not to pull it, but if the electronic one goes on automatically I dont really have an option do I?
Similar incident happened to me with e handbrakes, with a hire car we had. Pulled the car onto the drive, went inside, came out to find the car not on my drive, but on my neighbors drive opposite.
The blue light flashing middle lane hoggers, works in a couple of ways, one it makes them move but two it shows they’re paying attention, between the blue lights starting up, to the car moving shouldn’t be a long time.. if the car doesn’t react the driver clearly isn’t paying attention to the road. Flashing will likely only aggravate or scare the driver ahead, meaning they’ll stay where they are to annoy you or move out of panic. Many years ago a was taking to a policeman at around 2am at a services, we talked about speed, he said if I was doing 80/ 85 and he was behind me, if I braked gently or moved out of the way slowing towards the speed limit, they’d be more likely leave me alone, as it shows I was alert to what’s happening around me (so long as my driving was safe and not erratic) so I would think the same applies to blues and twos to move middle lane hoggers
What are you gonna do when (if) Gareth ever sells that bloody M4? It’s been the gift that keeps on giving so far. You guys keep on recommending the 130i but prices are going up at the mo, any for around £3.5k will be bloody dogs. The 125i is a good shout and is easily remapped to 130i power.
This may offend most guys, but being an avid listener & follower of Scotty Kilmer, the straight forward answer to why Electronic parking brakes are becoming increasingly popular amongst car makers, it's cheaper to manufacture and the bean counters push it. Also if a Electronic parking brake fails it is more expensive to fix as well as it involves sensors.
Driving through red lights most do at some point in life. It's a minor lapse in concentration. Providing no-one is hurt it's a relatively minor offense but due to many many driving laws you can get written up for about 4 sperate offenses which is a piss take.
Back in January there were temporary lights set up and it was snowing. My lights were on red and I had a car sitting behind me. At the other end were three cars waiting and I could see the red light reflecting on the front of the car at the other end. Eventually after about two minutes I put on my hazards and went through the red. I stopped at the other end and explained to the guy in front that there was snow on the sensor and I watched in my mirror as the three cars also went through the red. If you do it slowly and with due care then it shouldn't be an issue.
Although I love the attention the lupos are getting please stop suggesting them till I've bought mine in July, the prices are going up enough as it is 😂😂 Also I want the tdi which is super hard to get 😔
Thankyou boys for another slice of genius!!!!! I'll just say though that IMHO delivery drivers are some of the worst drivers I've ever seen! I wonder how much of this is down to tracking metrics? It's almost like the antithesis to a 'black box'. Not to measure your safety, but to measure how quickly you reach commercially driven goals. Your opinions please Gentlemen?
The electric handbrake is good for reducing parts. The rear brakes are used instead of a clamp on the axle which needs cable adjustment. On an automatic transmission this makes it that much more of an automated package. Auto cars also normally automatically go into Park when ignition is off and the driver door opened so autos never accidentally roll away, handbrake on or not. Unfortunately, this isn’t the same for manual transmissions which carry over an electric handbrake from their auto counterpart for the sake of cost reduction.
Dam alex that reminded me of the soul glo advert from the original "coming to america" lol Also how do you react when someone flashes you, with the blues and twos you know its not just a bmw driver
For 3k you'd get a great condition RX-8 with no engine worries. As long as you don't mind the fuel bills and send it a bit if its only short journeys then it's a fun daily that'll work just as well as any other car. I ran mine as a daily with no issues for 2 years before making her dedicated track toy
Regarding replacing the Micra! I understand you guys might not think it, but people who drive a car regularly, who've not been let down by a daily do develop a sense of attachment towards them. My suggestion with a car that you've owned for a while and you know the history of, would be to go through the car thoroughly once. Replace wheel bearings, Ball Joints, CV Boots, and regular maintainence like fluids and gaskets. That way the car you love so much gets a bit of a birthday. It would suck if that car gets into a Fender bender after all that, but that way the car lives on, and there's no anxiety of things failing slowly without your knowledge?
The electronic handbrake on the older Insignia really is the most stupid handbrake I’ve ever experienced. In comparison to the VWs or Mercedes I’ve driven it doesn’t turn on automatically - not even when the car gets parked...
Electronic handbrakes are the worst Too many parts and switches and motors that was somehow replacing some metal cable in a plastic tube that does EXACTLY the same job
DeLorean is actually fibreglass with stainless steel cladding, if I'm recalling it correctly from a recent video on one where it's the guy's first car. Late Brake Show channel video.
I daily an rx8 its super fun but gas prices and any weird noise I hear or think I hear makes me quickly put down the windows and mute my music to make sure its not the engine so its not that relaxing to drive if I had more money I wouldn't care tho as its the best feeling car I have driven

Probably the most "thought out" episode of Car Throttle that I've seen so far - particularly in relation to "inexplicable" behaviours such as driving through red traffic lights.
I did the *exact* same thing that Ethan said happened to him once, and then questioned "why did I just do that?"
These are my thoughts on this:
I think that there's a subconscious human *need* to exercise our sense of autonomy now and again - particularly if you've spent your entire life being "controlled" (ie through "rules", legislation, arbitration, etc.)
Sooner or later - particularly if someone questions a matter but receives no satisfactory explanation as to _why_ (in this case, I mean the forced ignoring of your own common sense), then eventually, the "act" begins to drop, and decisions such as exercising your own autonomy to make decisions based on your own lived experiences, will inevitably kick in.
Automatic handbrake in the winter sucks, during colder periods talking like -10C and below they allways freeze up during the night.
@Ross Bourne Mechanical handbrake is not automatic. I can choose not to pull it, but if the electronic one goes on automatically I dont really have an option do I?
Alex's reaction to the suggestion of a figaro had be creased 😂😂😂
32:10 i would go for a fiat 500. You can get used ones for around that budget as well
Similar incident happened to me with e handbrakes, with a hire car we had.
Although I love the attention the lupos are getting please stop suggesting them till I've bought mine in July, the prices are going up enough as it is 😂😂
Also I want the tdi which is super hard to get 😔
Thankyou boys for another slice of genius!!!!!
23:00 the same thing happened to me once I swore it turned green.
1:02:28 I'm with you Gareth😂 Others seemed to have ignored the fact
Legends. Keep up the good work.
Can’t wait for the car throttle Christmas album 💿 🎄 😁. Great work again team 💕
Dam alex that reminded me of the soul glo advert from the original "coming to america" lol
Also how do you react when someone flashes you, with the blues and twos you know its not just a bmw driver
Ethan, "It's only illegal if you get caught"
Alex, Gareth and THE ENTIRE INTERNET, " T R U E "
The delay with the Karoq starting is probably the glow plugs heating.
I agree with the phil vs anti phil challenge. Jacks mx5 vs alexs mx5 would be an awesome video.
Also cars play the engine noise on the the car so it means you hear less of the outside noises.
Every time someone asks which car to buy next, I think ‘mazda 6’. Literally every time.
Electronic handbrakes are the worst
Too many parts and switches and motors that was somehow replacing some metal cable in a plastic tube that does EXACTLY the same job
I think the standard of driving is dropping not down to lack of training / test but more on people in general having less respect for each other.
Good choice on the lupo lads I have one for a first car for half a year, possibly planning to put a 1.8t engine into it after a couple of years
The Electric Handbrake thing happened to me on a hire car it rolled away into the shop bit where you pay...
DeLorean is actually fibreglass with stainless steel cladding, if I'm recalling it correctly from a recent video on one where it's the guy's first car. Late Brake Show channel video.
there was a mk1 fiesta different front lights before the xr2 shape
I daily an rx8 its super fun but gas prices and any weird noise I hear or think I hear makes me quickly put down the windows and mute my music to make sure its not the engine so its not that relaxing to drive if I had more money I wouldn't care tho as its the best feeling car I have driven
Had the same thing. Drove up to a redlight crosspoint, shifted down to second and just turned right 🤦🏼 brain fart indeed.
Thank god the cameras were off.
I‘m from switzerland so i have no idea about pricing in the UK but if it‘s in the price range sam should get a Nissan 350z
