My great uncle was a merchant in the north-west of Mali. He spent 40 years there and spoke Temasheq. My cousin, his daughter, speaks it fluently too. My uncle used to work with Tuareg traders and taught me a few words that I've now forgotten. One day I was having lunch at some downtown restaurant in a big Canadian city, and heard a song that reminded me of the Mauritanian-Malian style of music so much. Learned the name of the artist, Bombino, and found out he'd just done a set near me that I missed out on only a week before! I would have loved to have met Bombino and shared some stories and tea with him. So far from the homeland we were practically neighbors in! My father's family from Houdh e-Chargui, frequent visitors to Mali's Tuareg north east, selling their wares all the way down to Bombino's Nigerien Tuareg community.
I caught him by accident in Lincoln square Chicago at square roots and he killed it. Everybody left all the other stages and just straight vining with him. I caught him next year at the blues fest and got a free signed record cuz I was last in line and their iphone died so they couldn't ring me up. He's a super cool dude and his live shows are always special because by the end they start freestyle jamming and it always builds up to some crazy crescendo. I highly recommended you catch him whenever possible
People listen to whatever resonates with them and their daily lives. I adore this music but I would totally understand why it wouldn't be motivating or relevant at all to millions and millions of people around the globe.
"Solitude is a frequent subject of Tuareg songs and poetry, as nomads are habitually living far from their homes or society. This happens because the usual nomadic itinerary, droughts or armed conflicts that lead to escape into exile. Bombino is asking the world to tell him the solution to the problem of solitude because it hurts his heart. He becomes sick from solitude and is looking for a cure." lyrics What shall I do? Oh, what shall I do Against this endless solitude It is located in the bottom of my heart And lives on it every moment My friends, do you know What could cool my boiling heart?
A nomad is a member of a community of people who live in different locations, moving from one place to another, so I am not sure if they live far from home or take their homes with them. These lyrics sound much more like a reference to the endless solitude derived from longing for the beloved, "what could cool my boiling heart...."

Thank you for this wonderful song. Thank you.
Fantastique musique qui me rappelle les grands espaces envoûtants que j'ai sillonné durant des années.
This man is a weaver of music... looming light.
