In the Sahara desert, an old Tuareg man comes back to the camp where he grew up for a party. He remembers the joys and the torments of the nomadic life he lived with a friend who has since deceased: memories from their naive childhood in the sand dunes, the adventures they lived during their teenage years, the fights and the dramas of their adult lives… Their friendship tells us the story of hearty people living in lands of loneliness.

    "There was a time
    I lived fulfilled.
    Life taught me that
    It can often change.
The one you find in solitude
    Is prisoner of egotistical desires.
    I have a friend I can trust
    Who quenches the thirst
    That burns in my heart.
    I walk in his footsteps
    Pursuing memories built
On a dune that's always moving.
No sleepwalking, don't keep me apart
I'm through sleepwalking, god be in my heart
No more sleepwalking, been asleep too long
No more sleepwalking, keep me with you go"

I have seen this music video so many times and I think I understand now. It's a tale about the old ways in conflict with the modern industrialized world. The dark glasses on the goat as a novelty appeared so unexpectedly, the diesel vehicles replacing the camels, the giant power lines disrupting the shape of the virgin desert and that giant black liquid creature that ressembles a tick is clearly the evil Oil industry. The song sounds very chill and melancholic but the lyrics are quite pessimistic and sad. It also feels like a tale about the loss of a friend that had the courage to fight. Love from another god forsaken country.

The most beautiful thing about this group is the mix of culture you see in the comments. I see sanskrit, Nepalese, french, spanish, english and others the world over digging music from around the world in a much more accessible way now that we have the internet (for better or worse)
The middle east has produced a lot of very talented musicians, I feel like Tinariwen have maybe also opened the door for some people to explore decades and decades of funk, soul, RnB, rock and folk pouring out of the desert

African music is actually one of the few African things that isn´t underrated, as you can see from the comments :-) But otherwise, I´m afraid you´re right. I´m from central Europe and we know the geography of Africa (the countries, capitals, basic history etc.), but we don´t get many news from Africa. For example, we don´t learn about technical inventions in Africa, or about writers and new books. Many people in my country think all Africans live in huts. I really, really don´t like this and I want to change it, but I don´t know how. Fortunately, at least Nigeria is making its name as the "fashion capital of the world" and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is becoming famous as a writer. I hope it´s just the beginning :-)

Music of Tinariwen is rich cause it has a lot of culture behind it. This type of music is not commercial or for the consumers who want to eat junk. This type is for the thinking and intelligent people. They play an old form of blues music and some speculate the origin of blues from which rock and roll and jazz evolved from these guys. Tinariwen is setting new standards for global music and these guys are the real deal. I hope sahara gets peace and the whole world gets peace. They are also good examples that muslims are not terrorists and can do wonders in art and they have a rich culture.

    (The man talks about memories)
In the Sahara Desert of Azawad, northern Mali, an ancient Tuareg man returned to the camp where he grew up for a party. He remembers the joys and agony of a Bedouin life he lived with a friend who has since passed away: memories from their naive childhoods in the sand dunes, the adventures they experienced during their teenage years, the battles and dramas of their adult lives... Their friendship tells the story of the tribal people who live in the Land of Unity.

My interpretation : they are freedom loving, fiercely independent desert nomads; the bug symbolises the threats to their way of life that are inexorably advancing to crush them: modernity, nation-states that draw borders in their homelands and salafist invaders all telling them that their lives are wrong and they need to change.
But armed with the power of love and sound and fury they resist against the modern-day Goliaths till they slay the beast with their guitar!
Long live you guys and all free nations ^^ brotherly love & respect from France

Noticed the big bug coming towards desert in both videos of their new album!!
I bet Tinariwen tries to talk a lot about all the changes brought by capitalism and globalisation which is killing twareg traditions and culture a lot !! Ibrahim Alhabib always talks about this in interviews.
The big bug is a metaphor of the change coming towards tenere !!
Tinariwen is trying to raise awareness about that via their art and music, life in the desert is so simple but our world is changing and they don't want to cope with that change or at least they don't want it in their homeland.
In tenere taqqal the other song they talk about all these changes !!
Simply my opinion if someone from the band could confirm ?

I think the big bug is the ismalic terrorisim. In interview they said that there home land is invaded by Isis. And now it's illegal to play music etc... It's like, at the begining they play music and live in peace. And at the end the big bug is here, all is red (the color of blood and war in semiotics) and finally, one of the guy sacrifice himself so everyone can live in peace again. That my analysis :/
Sorry for my english, i'm French

    • @kheireddineboot
      @kheireddineboot 6 років тому +7

Not sure this is it !
how about when he freak out with the glassed goat !! and why they show the evolution of instruments they play with.
