This is great man A full walkdown of you mixing your whole kit from start to finish would be amazing! (Or at least those toms...haha!) Keen to hear your thoughts on the mono R84, what you like to do with it!
Hi Kyle I'm a big fan. I recently sold a 57 and picked up an old Shure Unidyne III. It sounds unreasonably good on guitar amps and vocals (!). I'd be curious to hear one on snare. Have you tried one? I found one on Reverb for about the same price I sold my 57 for. Also, those Telefunken FETS very COOL. Very COOL channel keep em comin!
Peterrrrr. I have not tried the unidyne. I don't even think I've even heard it on guitar. that's tight. thanks for watching dude. we'll be back making music together v soon!
@@kylewmay I've tried it with a few mics, and it's better but I can see quite a bit of room for improvement.... but the M60 is not something i'd be willing to spring for. I have some (cheap) mics that i've tried (rode m5 / akg p170) and they have too much emphasis in one area or another, and are plagued with hissy hi-hat bleed.... looking for a flatter (flat to my ear, in context of intended use... if perhaps not literally flat) response. I considered trying a Lewitt LCT 140 AIR. Idk if you have any insight on affordable top SDC alternatives that would be worthwhile. I think the V7 sounds flatter than the Audix i5 that i'm running.... i think the I5 brings out too many ring and overtone issues with its sort of pre-eq'd approach, so I may try a V7 (at $100, no problem). Future setup I see myself trying a Bumblebee RM-5 ribbon, some Lewitt LCT 440 pure's for overheads, and getting into some cranborne audio camden 500 series preamps.... these items hit a lower price point than your setup, so that's the level of money commitment that i'm at with it currently (bang for buck, price/performance). I've got Focusrite Clarett 8 pre and an ART tubeopto 8 (The ART is, admittedly a starved plate cheap-o tube pre, but it does chill the transients, ring, and wonky-ness out of some of my signals). I'm using a lot of plugins from Analog Obsession that equate a lot of the Waves SSL / Neve / etc... stuff. I'll be tuning in.
Your snare sounds great dude I'm jealous of it lol. I'm doing my best with an i-5 on top and sm-57 on the bottom. I like what you said about mixing yourself when playing. That's my biggest goal atm
Aw man, thanks so much! The I-5 is a great mic! And thanks so much, once I figured out that I can make the sound person's job much easier by mixing myself, it made my life al little easier too! Thanks for the kind words.
Can I ask your opinion? Ive got $1000(CDN / about $750 USD) budget to buy a mic, and I am either getting a new M60 ($800 CDN / $590 USD) , or a used C414-BULS I found. I already own one Telefunken M60 and one C414 B-ULS, so whichever I go with I'll have a pair. My dilemma is that I kind of need another SDC, but the C414 is a pretty good deal at ($1000 CDN / $750 USD) considering what they are usually going for these days, but also although the 414 is supossedly in really good condition, it has a tiny bit of discolouration on the body and a name engraved in the back(which takes away from the value IMO, though to me It's not a huge deal since I'd likely be keeping it until the end of my career. To be honest, I want the M60 more than I want the 414 right now, just for practicality reasons(I need another SDC more than I need a LDC, and I also own a pair of 414 TLII's), but at the same time the 414 is a killer deal, and definitely a mic I want, and could use. On the other side of it, my logic says I should get the 414 while I can get it at this price(then I'll have a pair of B-ULS's also), and I can get another M60 down the road for much less than you usually see 414's go for. What do you think???
@@seankane3240 if they’re overloading the preamp, then yes I’d put the pad on. Even if it’s not overloading, sometimes I’ll put the pads on so I can get more of the preamp warmth.
to bad you dont mute drum head as this is what makes it happen ask any of these old drummers Steve gad David Garibaldi Simon Philips to many to name wide open snare to ringee to many overtones not solid whack and snap its an art to do this but i do love your recordings
CORRECTION: at 7:55 I talk about the snare bottom EQ and incorrectly title it V7 when it’s actually the m60 on the bottom!
Love to see the viewer ship go up! You will get there dude!
ah thanks so much for the support! Glad you're digging the videos.
Awesome video, Kyle! Sounds so good. Thanks for sharing.
thank you, mike!
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. You sound amazing
Why the hell does this video not have more likes!!? Really good video!
I've been using a T-Funk M80-sh on snare top and an AKG C214 on bottom and it has been other worldly for me!
Hell yeah! I bet that sounds amazing!!
that SN bottom mic sounds great

Great video Kyle! Very well-explained.
Thanks a ton, John! Appreciate you watching!
I was doing the same, but with cheaper mics and preamps, because money..... minus only the top condenser. Will try the top condenser soon.
Yes! Dig it! The top condenser was a game changer for me, let me know what you think whenever you give it a try!

Pro Tools dark ❤️great video Kyle
Love PT dark. Thanks so much!
I use the dbx160 a lot as well. Killer.
Hard to beat!
@@kylewmay dunno if you tried this but increasing the input gain, without even compressing anything makes the sound jump in your face. Very cool.

When you use a condenser on the snare as well as the dynamic,do you engage the db pad?
Yes! I try to use the pad closest to the source so in this case I would use a pad on the mic first (if it had one) and then on the preamp.
@@kylewmay what about overheads, would you put a pad on those ?thanks for getting back to me .
