      Late to the Game I wasn’t sure so I had to look it up. Materials are from New Zealand, shoes manufactured in Italy, and headquarters in San Francisco. So no China thankfully.

    • @Sean2884
      @Sean2884 4 роки тому +6

      Tony Levesque that’s a lot of shipping and handling for a “sustainable product.”
      Things can come from other origins than China and be wasteful. It’s difficult thinking this needs to be explained.

    Thanks for this review! I think that I wish that Allbirds are cheaper but I think we’re so used to cheap costs made possible by people paid less than min wage working in dangerous conditions in developing countries that we forget how much things cost if they are made fairly, with materials that are not damaging to the environment. All in all a very helpful review! Thanks!

    • @cindya5043
      @cindya5043 3 роки тому +1

      You’re right Gloria. We have been spared many products’ true cost for decades by shoe companies favoring competitive pricing that are achieved by low wages and ignoring the cost of externalities - all of the natural resources used at the expense of all of us in the production of any manufactured thing (think water, air and fossil fuels). These resources are finite and we seldom pay for them. Allbirds have likely figured these costs in, which is what all manufacturers should have done all along to temper our consumption habits, and figure in the true cost of making a thing when using finite resources.

      IMO 95$ is a fair price for shoes offering style but also comfort. I understand some sports shoes just cost ~60-70$ but most of them dont look not trendy but ugly tbh.

    Weird, wool is generally seen as prestigious in Europe. Of course we understand cheaper wool can be scratchy and so forth, but we also understand that even that kind of wool has the same breathability and insulation benefits. Many people's winter coats are made of wool to avoid getting sweaty whilst staying toasty.

    I didn’t like how my first Tree Runners Allbirds fit at first. But I did break them in and now I love them. I have the dark gray ones that lace up the ankle. I hand wash them though. I don’t trust my washing machine to not mess them up. I was worried about them losing their shape if I threw them in the wash. So far they’ve held up. Not very good in wet weather though. It’s not waterproof, and it doesn’t have good traction on slippery surfaces.

    I had heard about AllBirds from someone else a few weeks ago.. I wanted to give them a try because of sustainability. I had some doubts about the sizing options, since I wear a wide. However, the moment I put on my pair, the show seemed to mold comfortable around my foot. It wasn't tight at all and felt really light.
    The price of the shoe is comparable to what I would pay for a pair a good hiking or running shoes. So the price doesn't bother me.
    The fact that your shoes lasted more than a year speaks to their durability. They are definitely worth the price.It's not like you're paying $99 every year.

    • @User-cb4jm
      @User-cb4jm 3 роки тому +1

      Exactly, these are the price of decent running shoes and aren’t too far away from crap construction, sweatshop sneakers. Idk how they aren’t charging more for the higher labour charge, merino wool material and the R&D to get a comfortable fit on so many people. If anything the price is in the territory where cheapskates can just about afford it and they’re now having a b*tch over the fact it costs more than a Target shoe.

    I mean after 2 years it's starting to wear out I'd say it's good. And the price is standard given quality of materials and everything. Merino wool isn't cheap. I don't find those negatives brought up to be valid. A pair of merino wool socks are minimum 15$ cad. That's just the socks.

    Solid review thank you. Disagree with the price point idea. It's premium for many reasons. Cover costs of sustainable and carbon neutrality, inspires buyers to hold onto the shoe for longer and take better care, gives the brand an element of prestige, and doesn't allow for the potential to cut corners to create a bargain brand competitor.

    I have bought 3 pairs for my husband in about same time frame as you Josh although his first pair is now 2 years old. He works from home and wears slippers during the work day so they are his go-to-shoes for evenings and weekends out. We live in Orlando so a lot of walking in the parks. He’s a 13 and his big toe wore through the wool of his first pair which Allbirds replaced for free and told us to put moleskin in the toe area in the replacement pair.
    You got way more wear out of a single pair of shoes than you realize. I am sure you are probably 3 times over the recommended steps per pair. You shouldn’t be wearing that first pair any longer not because of slipperiness but because you have worn down your shoes. You wouldn’t drive on bald tires would you? You will end up with plantar fasciitis if you continue on this path. You got your $95 worth. Throw that pair out.

    • @tbrew8222

      hearing so many wear their toe through, I was planning to pre patch the inside this same way, right from day one and just replace the patch occasionally.

    Sizing? True to size or they run 1/2" small in the front toe area? Im 10.5 myself and I noticed there website does off 1/2 sizes. I like navy color like the one you showed.
    Please advise based on your experience.

  • @amysances8548
    @amysances8548 3 роки тому +4

    Love my Allbirds. Two things to note, the inside material rips where my big toes is. There is a thin rubber piece in between the lining and wool, if they made it an inch longer the inside of the shoe would last longer. For $95 it’s a big disappointment. Second, the wool on the inside of the shoe wears away after a month or two. Wool on the heal box and insole rubs off almost instantly. What keeps me coming back is the comfort. I can’t find another brand that is just the right amount of support and comfort. I just bought e new pair and I’ll be glueing a thin piece of leather in the toe box to keep the material from ripping.

    Thanks for this review. I actually just ordered my first pair of this brand; the tree runners. The main reason I'm giving them a try is that they have a brown pair. I find it difficult to find a brown pair of tennis/tennis-like shoes for men. As for as wearing them in warm weather, that's fine. I wear those barely-three shoe liner style socks so I should be fine. I expedited the shipment so hopefully I'll get them by this weekend. As for the price, yep. They are now $95.00US. I was chatting with them online (Facebook) and asked if they had any discount codes and was told that they feel their shoes are priced well. In other word - no. Cheers!

    99 dollars isnt a downside for all of the positive comments you made. You got to be prepared to pay a little more for a quality product. Compared to Nike they have a killer price

    • @User-cb4jm
      @User-cb4jm 3 роки тому +2

      And the best part is you are paying for the quality of materials, comfort and non-sweatshop construction for something you will use for 4-5 years not a designer/iconic brand (people somehow have no issues dropping cash for flashy brands). People who complain about this price will go ahead and buy shoes that are cheaper and less comfortable and replace them more frequently and spend just as much in the long run whilst having sore feet.
      Shoes, mattresses and tyres should never be cheaped out on, things that separate you from the ground.

    • @markb1170
      @markb1170 3 роки тому

      Not to mention that even lowering the price as it is would mean that they will be cutting down on something else in order not to sacrifice the high quality everyone is used to. Most probably they‘d cut costs by migrating production to a sweatshop where workers are paid terribly and the working conditions are bad. 99USD is a fair price, in my opinion.

      I find it funny that people are complaining about the price... are shoes usually super cheap in America? This is sold for about $140 AUD and it’s an absolute bargain, Converse which is a canvas shoe with hard, flat as a plank insoles are $100 AUD and most *quality* sneakers go for just above $150 AUD. Given use per wear and how important comfortable shoes are, this makes a lot of sense.

    • @User-cb4jm
      @User-cb4jm 3 роки тому

      The price is totally reasonable here in Australia... it’s $140 AUD, when Converse with flat as a plank insoles go for $100 AUD, and decent running shoes are $150 AUD and above. The fact that it’s merino wool and not made in some sweat shop while trying to keep the company profitable - I don’t know how they’re not selling them for more.

      Vegans should know that most sheep NEED shearing to remain heathy and happy.
      There used to be an inhumane practice with merino (cutting a patch of skin near butt to prevent a type of fly issue) but it is banned in NZ.
      Wool is also not that warm when comparing similar weight fabrics and tightness of weave. However it does not lose insulation when wet and thats where the warm reputation really comes from. Its also why cotton is called death cloth. Wool is regulating fot hot or cold. Its used in space suits for the same reasons, it handles the extreme heat as well as cold.
      Its the true sustainable. All the corporate aliances "for the war" (ww1&2) are still keeping hemp, wool and cotton hard to make cheap when the stuff literally just grows and takes way less processing than petrochemicals.

    I ask a lot from my shoes, I currently wear only converse for almost everything except special occasions. But if I’m building a shed, walking for miles, skating, or acting on stage I am in a pair of converse. All these acts force my feet to fold and put stress on my shoes. My converse always rip from the side and I need to buy new ones every 5 months. My question and hopes for you to answer are, will these shoes be a far better alternative???

    • @User-cb4jm

      Do it. As far as I’m concerned, as someone who wore Converse like you to everything, you’re getting better value in this shoe. It costs a bit more, about the same as any decent pair of running shoes. They won’t wear out as fast, and they’re actually comfortable and won’t give you foot pain and issues in the long run. For such a investment for your feet, shoes (like mattresses and tyres) aren’t to be cheaped out on and this is fantastically affordable given the years of use you can get out of it and the versatility with which you can wear it daily.

      Maybe save your complaints for designer/fashion shoes that have no reason to cost $1000s. Think of the R&D to get such a comfy fit on so many people, the fact that it isn’t cheaply constructed sweatshop shoes from Bangladesh/China. Spread out over 4-5 years, its less per YEAR for something you use all day, 365 days a year, than than most people spend at McDonalds in a month. Yet because it’s so cheap for excellent quality, cheapskates come out of the woodwork to whinge that it’s not as cheap as a sweatshop Target shoe that gives way after a single year.

    They’re too expensive. The are comfortable but the price stops me buying another pair.

    Not worth the money, mine got holes in the toes in 6 months. I have shoes that are 14 years old that I wear almost everyday. That’s sustainable. Buy shoes that are goodyear welted, they last for years, since you can get them resoled.

      I do have a pair of goodyear treaded sandals!
      Still looking at a pair of these.
      Felted wool stitched to a tire would be great in my book. I prefer flatter shoes and dont like over cushioned form fit of modern sneakers

      Never knew sneakers could have replaceable goodyear welted soles, I though only dress shoes had them.

      It depends also on how you take care of your shoes - I‘ve had mine since 2019 and the uppers still look amazing, granted I let my shoes breathe out in between uses and use shoe woods.

      Sort of, the "tree" runners mentioned in the videos are mostly made from eucalyptus but they still use a little bit of wool on the insole. Everything else in the shoe is made from plants (the upper mesh and the "rubber" sole) or recycled plastic (the laces)

      Sheep need to be sheared to be happy.
      The inhumane practices associated (are with merino) only happen in america. NZ banned it and aussies frown on it.
      So youre making sheep happy to wear wool. Its not like an american confined feed lot. Nz sheep run through the hills and graze wild until they are so fuzzy its a health danger.

    These shoes suck, wore out pretty quick. Only had it for three weeks, and they look like I got out of the garbage. Also, it's not good on slippery surface while running outdoors. It's a pass for me.
