In short, they stopped talking to the camera, and started talking to us. People like being talked to. Watching a documentary isnt the same as being talked to.

Most native Swedish folks almost never do hand gestures when talking. In the county I live in, native folks rarely say YES. Instead when we breath, on the inhale we will use the opportunity to say YES. But it is not the word YES (JA) it is the sound of the air moving over the lips that makes the sound for YES (JA) Search for "SAY YES - 10 Swedish Words" time code 0:43 by UA-camr TheSwedishLad

I sat down two days ago and recorded my first YT video (for a different channel, not this account), and was absolutely energized about it and never once did I feel awkward. I dreaded it and put it off for two weeks, but once I hit record and stumbled through the first couple of points, repeating them in different tones and phrases, I found a FUN rhythm and it became a game and I ENJOYED the filming process! There was no fear. There was no anxiety or timidity. I was just myself and I was having a blast. I started edits this morning and I'm amazed how much I like watching those different takes. Sometimes there's a clear winner, and sometimes I ended up taking half of one cut and half of another because I liked them both so much. So yeah, don't stress about action, just be the action, and you may surprise yourself.
I also gesticulate so much IRL and was worried about this being a problem on camera so I forced myself to use my hands less. I'll ignore that concern next video and just communicate as verbally and gesturally as I damn well please, thank you! Most of my videos moving forward will be much more voiceover, but sometimes I'll be on screen and I'll just be 100% me.

I think this "retention hack" is called "Having screen presence."
Anyone can record themselves talking into a camera or moving about in front of a camera, to actually PERFORM for a camera (and yes, all of this is performance, which is not a dirty word), to be an entertaining personality, is an entirely different skill altogether.
It's a lot of the same rules as theater: getting up in front of a crowd and talking or singing is one thing, holding their interest, either for entertainment or a lecture, is a discipline. Performing on stage and having a stage presence are two different things.

So whereas for an audience trying to break into the entertainment, film or TV industry you might well use the expression 'stage presence, he instead used the term 'retention hack' which given his niche and the intended audience, was a clever thing to do, no?

As always, infinitely helpful and perfectly crafted! 👏 As an editor I can see how much time you've sweated into the tiny details!
If I can make one recommendation (courtesy of Gerald Undone that I'm shortly going to do myself for my video productions), if you invest in a sound blanket, you can super effectively treat your room by essentially erecting a set of ultra thick mobile curtains right behind the camera. It'll soak up the majority of the reverb and give your vocals that extra high end quality. It's so tricky in a room with hard surfaces everywhere, I know!
I tried the cheap version of this as a test at home by placing my camera in front of closed curtains and it's remarkable how little reverb there is!

So many awesome points to apply to my next video, thank you. Glad you covered the voiceover peeps too as that's the route I'm going down. I have done on camera stuff too, but I prefer the current path I'm on.
I liked the mrwhosetheboss inspired text and timer elements on the right. Was hooked all the way through and I can see why you had so much fun editing this.
P.S. Loved the dance moves too

It regularly occurs to me that a lot of the content on this channel would feel like an infomercial if it weren’t for the amazing production and outstanding talent.
The goofy tropes, hilarious gags, and dedication to the craft make Film Booth what it is - absolutely fantastic.
I’d watch this channel even if I didn’t have struggling UA-cam channel of my own (which I do… sigh).
    Thanks for everything you do!

Hey man instead of playing master yi how about you
INVEST IN ETERNITY. JESUS CHRIST shed HIS BLOOD and DIED for OUR SINS so we can be saved.
We humans are imperfect sinners. We hurt others and do things that we ourselves know are wrong and regret. The punishment for our sins is death and hell. And we can't save ourselves.
But God so loved the world, that he sent Jesus to die for our sins to receive the punishment that we deserve. And Jesus rose again and offers eternal life, forgiveness, and blessings to all those who believe.
REPENT and BELIEVE IN JESUS and BE SAVED, my dear friends

The funny thing is that I am actually a great lecturer in public, I can lecture for hours in front of hundreds of people, but I need the attention and eyes of people on me to feel comfortable 😂 so when recording, it's at first really awkward to talk with nobody, but eventually I started to imagine a crowd sitting in front of me to feel more relaxed!
