Let My Prayer Rise: The Sacred Censer
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 гру 2014
- A censer is a small metal or stone dish used for burning incense. A common design is a metal container, about the size and shape of a small coffee-pot, suspended on chains and often with the addition of small bells. The bowl contains hot coals, and the incense is placed on top of these. To the Orthodox, burning incense represents the prayers of the faithful rising towards Heaven as a sweet smelling spiritual fragrance. One commonly sung psalm during the censing is "Let my prayer rise like incense before You, the lifting up of my hands like the evening sacrifice." Some Orthodox Christians use a standing censer on their home altars.

Lord Jesus Christ Son of God have mercy on me a sinner.
Wowee! I did not know all of that about the censer itself. Everything in the Church is packed with meaning.
Very true my friend!
Let my prayer arise like incense! And the lifting up of my hands, be an evening sacrifice, hear me Oh Lord!
Orthodoxy is special, and unique. Just can't wait for the day when the opportunity comes to get to orthodox church and become part of orthodox worship of God. Pray that it will happen soon! Thank you for this lovely and informative video. We would be the poorer without these videos.
God bless Paul and thank you for your kind words!
I love all those 'nuggets' of gold I keep discovering about our Church life and our faith! Praise God!
Someone said that "like incense" means that our prayer should be as if it were incense. So the calm risinig of the sweet incense can be seen as the perfect prayer...

In brief: the smoke always appears where the earthly and heavenly realms physically meet. Remember: smoke surrounding the mountain when Moses receives Revelation, the cloud covering the Apostles during the Transfiguration.
Thats very good we might use that in the future ;)
Taras, excellent reminders!
Spa Lux Nicely put.
Spa Lux smoke 💨 on the water 💦, fire 🔥 in the sky 🌌
Spa Lux Beautifully put! Thank you
I used to be a Catholic altar server when I was young, I always loved the smell of incense, I wonder if Orthodox incense smells exactly the same.
It's the same
I love that the orthodox church uses bells on their censor.
About using incense has been prophesied from malachi 1:11 in the old testament (and in every place incense shall be offered to My name and a pure offering. For My name shall be great among the gentiles.) Incense is offered in nearly every service of the orthodox church. An offering to christ our Lord.
Andri Christodoulou Wow! 😯😶
For those wondering, scripture reference: Malachi 1v11 (Prot&LXX) (or 20min for the whole book😉)
Thank you for this valuable post.
Wonderful and authoritative presentation. Thanks master.
God bless friend!

This video should be required for every liturgy student and every Christian in the East and the West.
One day we will do videos about the liturgy itself.
The depth, height, and breadth really are immeasurable
Amen
Thank you for this beautiful explanation!
So glad I found this channel! This adds much depth to my appreciation of the divine services!
Hi, friends. I'll give you a slightly different interpretation: The three chains represent the Holy Trinity, the forth chain that makes the top bowl go up and down symbolizes Christ who came to earth from above and the bottom bowl represents the womb of Theotokos which remained intact, as the burning bush, even after she carried Christ who is represented by the burning charcoal {Isaiah 6:6-7}.

Must Keep Censer in my house
It's also an image of the pillar of cloud that filled the Tabernacle and Temple. I.e. the incense is a replica of the Holy Spirit
Not only the orthodox churches. Even catholic
Hi there I'm a roman catholic
Heavenly Presence.
Which chant is being sung in the background.
"Lord i have cried to you"
What is the name of the song? Please tell me, and thanks
It is "Lord here my prayer..."
Hello! I'm the Orthodox. God bless you. What's the name of this song? On 1:50 🙏🏻⛪
The hymn is “lord I have cried out to you” from the psalms
@@Trisagionfilms I'm looking for that song on UA-cam, I can't find it, there are more songs. I'm interested in that version of the song that starts at 1:50.
@@stefanuzelac2989 Here is a video that has the first hymn ua-cam.com/video/5jkNAQfQJz8/v-deo.html
the second recording is lost on a hard drive somewhere
I am Orthodox, but there is something that I do not understand. Why do all Orthodox clergy always keep the lid of the censor raised/open while they use it?? It would make more sense to close it while in use to prevent the sparks/embers from accidentally coming out. Otherwise, why even have a lid?? If you watch Roman Catholic clergy using a censor, they have it closed, which just makes more sense to me.
Not if it's kept open between uses. Just close it during those moments when it's being used.
They're designed differently. The Roman censer has larger holes in both the top and bottom bowls whereas the Byzantine it's more closed. The Roman censer is designed to be used closes since the air for the fire comes from the bottom and smoke rises from the top holes. Byzantine style since it generally has much smaller holes tend to snuff out the charcoal within as little as a minute and a half of being closed then there's the hassle of having to light another charcoal mid liturgy. In summery it's just 2 different designs of the sender itself.
@@MrMslay That makes sense then. Thanks for the info!

Hi Greg, we added English subtitles to this video for you. Almost all of our newer videos have English subtitles. We'll try to add them to the older videos as we have a chance. Those are a little more difficult as we no longer have most of the scripts that we can upload and so have to do it via transcription. Thank you!
