- In Naples, Italy, the world's best pickpockets challenge Bob Arno to a match of skills. In this National Geographic documentary, a gang of pickpockets demonstrate how they steal and reveals a human side that victims can't imagine. Then an amazing celebratory dinner with six thieves morphs into a challenge that might be one step too far for Bob Arno.

If the best pickpocket would be the smartest, he's not a petty thief. Either getting more money for shows or teaching people pickpocket/prevention. There's more money in that than a mere wallet.
+Geir Offenberg The best pickpocketer i'm sure wouldn't confess his success and title for he would be tracked down and apprehended but he would stay out of sight cloaked in anonymity.
not true. If you are good at something you want other people to know about it. It's no different in the criminal world. That's why a lot of criminals leave their brand at a crime scene. If you are the best at something you want others to recognize it.

The guy that Bob finally met, was probably the best pickpocket alive today; and he knows it and takes pride in his craft. Even Bob said, he never felt a thing when the guy first took his poke. The guy has the smoothest hands for a cannon. Bob shouldn't feel ashamed at not wanting to go through with dipping into somebody's kick. That is a normal and honest feeling that most people share. These guys are street guys that have been doing this racket for years as a means for survival in a very hard world. What struck me is the revelation of Bob finally meeting the master of his trade and Bob's admiration of his very skilled, acquired vocation. Bob does this as a form of entertainment. These guys are practitioners of their trade, real-life criminals. It's like what the master dipper said toward the end of the documentary. "Bob, in your show in Las Vegas, you make the people laugh, whereas I make them cry." How very profound!
This master pickpocket is the quality Roald Dahl meant, when he wrote the short story The Hitch-hiker. That genius pickpocket stole the notebook of the police officer, who had written down name, addrress, car model, license plate, speed when speeding, where that happened. Like it never happened. Problem solved.

The difference between me and you:

I liked how Bob smiled during the meeting of the pickpockets. Its like for the first time in his life he felt like he belonged to that group and the lesson he got at the end of the day was also an eye opener for Bob. At least he found the man he was looking for and earned their respect. Bless you Bob!

This really is beautiful. It's the truest expression of cultural exchange. Two entirely different types of people, brought together by their love and proficiency at a rare and transgressive skill, laughing and sharing and exchanging techniques. Of course pickpockets in Naples were going to get better after this. It was inevitable. It was also inevitable that Bob was going to get better. He's taking some of what he learned and applying it on the stage. They are taking some of what they learned and applying it on the street. That's fair. The most beautiful moment was actually where for a brief time Bob got to feel the fear of doing this "for real," and the "real" got to feel a bit of what Bob does- stealing for an audience, showing off your skills, and getting to do it without shame, or risk of jail. That was a true cultural exchange. And if a few more people in Naples get their wallets or Gucci belts snatched, that's evolution.
Love ALL you said here , Maniac Mcgee ❤👌🏴
Ah yes, group crime. So beautiful
Are you taking the piss? 😂
@Manic mcgee that is a beautiful comment, it truly is, and I am so glad that someone else saw it that way. I thought I was wrong somehow to see it that way, but you said it perfectly. It warmed my heart to see this happening. The respect and love they had for each other was wonderful. Oceans apart, different languages, different lives, yet they came together in true camaraderie. I salute you !
you will have a different perspective of this so called cultural exchange once you lose something valuable to thieves. trust me I know
I’m from Naples and to everyone saying that this is fake, you’re wrong, they’re real thieves.
Offering a coffee or a dinner is a sign of respect for us, and we’re also very emotional people, that “You make them laugh, I make them cry” part was really touching because it really emphasise how they’re just people like us, they just ended up in a bad phase of their lives.
If anyone has anything to ask feel free to comment
Much love from Naples 💕💕
Don’t be afraid to visit this beautiful city
Thanks for saying that, JohnRely. You're right of course, these men, though thieves, are just people. By the time they got old and wise enough to regret their chosen profession, they had no marketable skills and mile long records. They are warm people, like all Napoletanos we have met.
By warm you mean homosexual I assume?

AMWF You’re laughing at the fact that a man’s wearing sunglasses in the middle of summer in southern Italy. The actual reason both him and his wife are wearing a very dark tint of sunglasses is because they need to be able to keep their eyes on their bag or pocket so they can spot the technique used by the thief without tipping them off by letting them see that they’re looking right at them.

What struck me most about this is the trust between Bob and the pickpockets in Naples. Hanging out with these guys could have been very dangerous for him. And accepting to all join hin in a restaurant could have been a dangerous trap for them. But the mutual appreciation of their shared skills gave them mutual respect and trust. True cultural exchange of a different kind.
Do you really think they trusted each other? That just shows you how good they are.

Even the thieves have a certain charm, although I certainly dislike their occupation.
A Sicilian once told me that a Neapolitan can steal the soles off your shoes while you are wearing them
"The difference between you and I is that you make them laugh, and I make them cry." Profound.
I watch this documentary every year, and it's still fantastic
A word on our sweaty shirts seems to be in order, since many of you comment on this. Hey-this was a documentary! As in, reality! It was 90-some degrees during the shooting and often nerve-wracking. Hey-we were among criminals! Wearing hidden cameras!
Our shirts were wired up with button cameras and microphones, so we couldn’t change them often, even though we had two identical shirts apiece.
We also used a mix of POV cameras, like the very first GoPro, which were hidden in purses, guidebooks, and other things you might see us carry in the film. We also used eyeglass cameras and iPhone video. Our crew used two larger camera: a Red, and the old Canon 5D. Sometimes you can see a flash of these in the film.
BTW, these very experienced thieves did not learn any new tricks at our dinner that would further their trade. What they know today they have learned over decades of daily practice. There’s nothing a stage pickpocket from Las Vegas could offer them.
This film actually makes the pickpockets’ work more difficult. Take yourself (and the millions of other viewers). You watched the whole documentary, right? Now you know how pickpockets work. Think they can pull their tricks on you? I bet not!

My 70 year old aunt was in Naples just last Saturday and leaving a cruise ship on a bus to the rail station. She is very unsure of herself and was targeted by these spineless cowards in a gang of three. They stole her purse with money and cards then jumped off the bus like little girls. These pieces of shit ruined an old lady's birthday holiday, one she had saved up for 10 years to go on. God will look down on them and weep

Bill Settle - I know you posted this a year ago but I felt I should tell you how sorry I am this happened to your aunt. Older people are an easy target, especially when they're out of their comfort zone. Maybe tourist services like Perillo Tours should set up tours that cater to older people that hires security people to look after them so this type of thing doesn't happen. Am quite sure there would be no shortage of senior citizens that would sign up for the opportunity to travel and be safe at the same time.

That dinner table scene was really something special. Having two sides of the same coin, despite their line of work, sit down and just enjoy a meal together is a rare and enviable feat. Despite the fact that they steal from others, that they express remorse towards doing so only educates people in that life is not always as black and white as most moral and legal authorities would have you believe. That despite a person's tough exterior, they have a heart beating in their chest just like us and that we all share more than we realize.

Thanks - every few months or so somebody believes these guys are actors. Not so. Charming yes, and different to pickpockets in the rest of Europe, but all have served time. We appreciate your suspicion, because it means you are impressed and jump to a conclusion "they must be actors." Of all the thieves you see in this documentary, only one has aspiration to move on and become an actor. That is not easy in Italy, with a record. Read The Making of Pickpocket King here: bobarno.com/thiefhunters/bob-arno-pickpocket-king-national-geographic-documentary/

This is very interesting to watch thank you ! :)
Are they rich/poor? I mean, Angelo is apparently the most skilled pickpocket in the world, surely he has to be quite rich? Yet it seems as if many of them wants to quit as soon as they have enough money.
KingThiazzi Now that’s a good question. Very few pickpockets anywhere are wealthy. Some, in their prime make a lot of money, around US$150,000-200,000 a year but nearly always piss it away, or have a habit. Unless you know what to do with “the spread” you won’t be able to max out the cards, and it’s getting harder by the day with new security features on cards. Some European pickpockets, and Angelo is not one of them, target wealthy people and make more. They are the exception. Napoli is not exactly a center of wealthy tourists or locals using public transportation. Yes, Angelo has superb technique (and "chops") but he has a poor pool of victims, and no way of working outside his domain (for many reasons, and that's a different post). He is stuck!
The pickpockets were just stealing wallets, now they are being taught by the best how to steal watch worth $10k-100k. Wow talk about on the job training.

@@theekiddunknown6069 you're merely thinking of the difference between a leather strap and a metal strap. A metal strap almost always needs to be slipped off (which can also be easily taken) but a leather strap usually has a buckle on it. Even a patek philippe (well over 100k) can have a buckle.
