It’s been years since I gave up w my vocal coach bc I got stuck and didn’t understand her explanations for getting rid of the heavy crack. May have finally gotten the tools I need to start working on it again, thanks to you 🙏✨
I just want to leave this comment here in case anyone would see this. This guy is the real deal. I did his mixed voice exercise and what do you know.... I saw a stretch in my vocal range in a week. This man is a gem.
I’ll also second that opinion. I’ve been performing/singing professionally for 30 years and recently lost my mixed range when I wasn’t gigging as much during Covid. These exercises have helped a great deal. Although I will say when I don’t have the proper monitor set up and I’m struggling to hear my voice, I lose any upper range in a matter of three or four songs and it’s awful. Another thing that seems to happen, and maybe it’s because I like a loud monitor, my ears start to plug up and I have to keep popping them in order to hear my monitor, but again this is probably from years of the bad habit of a loud monitors 😩😖😆
I know I’m very late to the game here, but this helped me literally immediately. I haven’t kept up my vocal practice, so my break returned with a vengeance and it’s been so frustrating. These exercises helped so much, thank you!!
I've been studying singing since 1 year, and you're the first one I "met" who explained me so well Head voice, mix voce and how to get them. You're amazing! THANKS
I liked this simple explanation on breaks. Having sung professionally as an operatic singer (oratorio too), and taught hundreds of students over 48 years of teaching, one of my 16 year old baritones has a huge break in his voice. I've tried most of these exercises - vocal fry - siren - etc. It's getting better but I'm sending his this short video clip to see if he understands how to blend a bit better. He's extremely talented so I want to help him overcome this. Thank you for sharing.
Seriously excellent explanations. Great examples which are simultaneously informative and very funny, combined with fun yet competent video editing. You sir are a very good transmitter of ideas. I have been singing for 2 years now and my voice wasn't always well connected that's why from time to time, I tend to have a chestier mixed voice. Now I'm fully aware of my not-so-connected-voice and recently, I'm working to smooth out the break. But I found out that these kinds of exercises don't really work for me. What worked the best for me is the Lip Rolls. Now I'm getting better than ever and I'm able to sing better in my mix without going chestier. My question: Will it produce similar results to these exercises?
Great question! Different people with differing voice tendencies and habits respond differently to the different exercises. That's why it's so difficult to answer your question. When people need to get to New York, one drives, one takes the train, and one flies...but hopefully, they all make it there! The "creaky door" exercise is designed to increase vocal cord closure (adduction) while thinning out the extra weight (singing too chesty.) A lip roll can thin out also extra weighty while DECREASING adduction (the opposite of the creaky door.) So two seemingly opposite exercises might help two people with opposite habits and tendencies to reach the same goal. Whether that's what is happening in this situation is impossible to tell without hearing you sing and working with you in a lesson. But keep going with what works for you if you notice good results. There is no ONE exercise that helps everyone. In fact, what is good for one person could hinder another. If the lip trill and related exercises work for you, you might want to try out my video "7-Minute Mix Voice Workout" here: ua-cam.com/video/IGoRueDvIvA/v-deo.html

@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio Wow. I didn't know I commented here a year ago. Well, a year after, and I already have built my mixed voice! Now the only thing that's left is keep on developing and mastering it :) edit: i came from the other video haha
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio yes!! It helped immensely! Ive been studying with a vocal teacher for two months but she never got into detail about how to overcome the break in the passaggio. Thanks to you ive understood the logic and i have some practice exercises. Thank you so much!
At one point in my mixed voice (my vocal break) my voice just cannot stop cracking. I can't sustain the note....what should I do? When I do really high notes I can sustain my mix/head, but on the lower range of the head voice (lower mixed voice), I can never sustain a note.
Thank you for your suggestion. I will seriously consider this topic. It is possible to sing with a balanced mixed voice, but it is something that is easier to teach one-on-one than in a video since everyone is different. Learning to be balanced means the student is starting off somehow "unbalanced"...but in which way? Every singer is different in their habits so there isn't one adjustment that every singer must make. It is really a case of "it depends."
If you are struggling to find a balanced mix, I would high suggest finding a good teacher to show you a) how you are unbalanced and b) what exercises you must do to adjust your balance. This was super helpful. Turns out ive already been using mix voice but i thought it was just bratty head voice. Im still having troubles going from chest voice to mix though as you can still hear a flip. Thank you this really helped!
Glad it helped! And that's interesting that you have been singing in mix voice. Have you tried any of my vocal workout videos to continue building the connection between chest and mix voice?
Hi, yes i have. They were really great its just still hard for me to make that crack/flip sound go away im sure thats something that comes with practice. Thank you!
Hi im having a hard time about the puppy dog whine going back to chest voice, im getting the B. finding my chest voice but a little too well. Please help.
Hi Spencer, I just discovered your videos and love them! I feel like I'm squeezing my vocal chords together when I do Squeaky Door, which reminds me of what vocal fry feels like...I'm wondering if there's a risk of damaging my chords or developing nodes with this warm up if I do it wrong? Thanks so much for these videos!
Hi Amanda, the "creaky door" does bring the vocal folds together to produce an edgier sound than normal speaking or singing. Often, this creaky voice can sound similar to vocal fry, but in a higher register than fry. As you do this exercise, be sure to watch for the red flags of irritation: feeling the need to clear your throat or swallow repeatedly, experiencing itchiness or discomfort in the larynx. These could be early warnings that you are overdoing the coordination, and you are irritating your vocal folds. In that case, stop, rest, and reassess what you are doing. With the "creaky door" exercise, a little goes a long way. Do the bare minimum necessary to produce the sound and find the connection between your chest and head voice. And when in doubt, throw it out.
So apparently when I tried smoothing out that break, I generate a distortion like tone between instead of a cracky tone. Thats weird idk if thats suppose to happen.
I'd have to hear you to know for sure, but it's common to fall into a distortion-like sound called "creaky voice" when humming through the break region. It sounds like vocal fry but pitched up higher. Try pulling in your navel to give a bit more air pressure to the vocal folds when you get to this point of the scale. That can keep them vibrating in a more clear mode. Good luck!
Hey I really like the video it's so funny, but I have a question, I start doing these exercises and my voices kept breaking when i pass from the head to chest and vice versa, do I need to do them daily or there's another problem, thank you tho :))
I'm glad you like the video. Unfortunately, I can't help without hearing you and working with you in a lesson because they could be so many reasons why your voice is breaking in the middle, even after working with these exercises. Can I ask if you are male or female and how old you are?
There could be many reasons why your voice is breaking, but a common reason at your age is your puberty voice change from boy to man. This can take 1-3 years to fully complete, during which time the teenage boys' voice breaks a lot.
My problem is when I make the higher notes louder they sound gritty. So I'm going to do these exercises while adding dynamics. Each one gradually getting louder. What do you think would that help?

Thank you for your suggestion. I will seriously consider this topic. It is possible to sing with a balanced mixed voice, but it is something that is easier to teach one-on-one than in a video since everyone is different. Learning to be balanced means the student is starting off somehow "unbalanced"...but in which way? Every singer is different in their habits so there isn't one adjustment that every singer must make. It is really a case of "it depends."

Thank you!
Yes, practice will help and also taking the right approach. Remember it's not just the exercise, but HOW you do the exercise.
So good! 😍👏🎶
Glad you like it!
This is grt! Thks refresher is always good i use sirens alot
Most welcome 😊
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio great, thank you so much! I'll do it lightly and will definitely watch for the red flags you mentioned.
Good luck!
Informative 🙂
Glad it was helpful! What would you like to improve in your voice?
You're awesome! Thank you so much!!
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio yes of course I'm a 15 years old male
There could be many reasons why your voice is breaking, but a common reason at your age is your puberty voice change from boy to man. This can take 1-3 years to fully complete, during which time the teenage boys' voice breaks a lot.
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio oh okey thank you so much i hope it don't add some difficulties, I love your videos keep going !!
@@luvsnoop Thank you!
My problem is when I make the higher notes louder they sound gritty. So I'm going to do these exercises while adding dynamics. Each one gradually getting louder. What do you think would that help?
I love your videos! the way you explain things and the funny punch lines every now and then which are pretty much on point haha the random dessert brad pic just sent me off laughing
Thanks so much!! Love making these fun for everyone 😃
Day number ??? of me forgetting the Brad Pitt part and laughing like it was the first time I'm seeing it. xD
Lovely tutorial!!!!!!
Thanks so much! What are you working to improve in your voice?
Get that one if he's all right with it we can blow it up with a hair dryer.. see if he can get some part from Cameron.. that seems to help him a lot
My passagio is good and my break is good sometimes
Glad to hear that
