      Just another video trying to get you to make silly noises to embarrass yourself. Human vocal cords are incapable of making more than one sound at once. I feel like these guys are probably laughing at us when the cameras go off.

      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  4 роки тому +24

      Yes, that 300-year-old tradition of using "silly noises" like voce finta and the pharyngeal voice to train great singers through the ages was actually just a giant cosmic joke. A gold star to you, dear sir, for uncovering the grand teaching conspiracy. Slow clap.

      "Human vocal cords are incapable of making more than one sound at once." Lalah Hathaway's polyphony, Mongolian throat singers, and the two formants in every vowel would disagree with you, but then you knew that.

    I’ve had a rough week of not being able to “unlock” my mixed voice like usual. It’s crucial if you are singing songs like Jane by Jefferson Starship. The Fargo “oh” helped me find it immediately and lose all that tension + frustration that was building up. This was a life saver. Thanks!

    I can’t tell if I’m doing a mixed voice, or a high chest voice

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  4 роки тому +12

      There is sometimes a confusion around this. Unfortunately, I can't hear what you are doing, so I can't guess if it is mixed or chest voice.
      Here are some guidelines: to check whether you are moving from chest voice into mixed voice instead of pulling up chest voice, see if you can sing higher (E4-G4 range) without changing your volume, changing the vowel, or losing the pitch. If you can sing into the mixed voice range without getting louder than the bottom notes, without widening your vowel in the least, or singing flat in pitch then chances are you doing something correctly. If you have to get louder or wider or flat, then chances are there is too much chest voice in this upper range.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  4 роки тому +6

      Singers can often do one or two of these correctly at once, but few can do all three (even volume, pure vowel, accurate pitch) at the same time.

    It appears I’ve been using my mixed voice regularly all this time without realizing it. Which is unfortunate because I thought mixed voice was the key to extending my range. As a baritone high notes have always been a goal of mine, and it’s sad that this apparently isn’t my solution.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  5 років тому +27

      Hi Josh, on what notes do you feel your mix voice coming in?
      #1. How do you know you're a baritone, since so many men are misdiagnosed tenors? Years ago, I was told I was a baritone simply because I was only comfortable in my chest voice, but really I was just an undeveloped tenor. There ARE true baritones out there, but not because they only sing in chest.
      #2. What notes are you trying to extend your range to? Even if you are a true baritone, all my baritone students vocalize up to high C and learn to sing G4 (sometimes up to A4 if they are lyric baritones) with a mix/full head voice in songs.

    • @joshwalker2453
      @joshwalker2453 5 років тому +15

      Spencer Welch Vocal Studio From what I can tell, my mix kicks in around F4. And currently my max range (not prima voce) is around C2-A5. I don’t have a specific range goal in mind, I just really want to push it a little higher, as I still struggle to hit the high notes on allot of the music I listen to, and have to change the key.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  5 років тому +17

      Yes, your mix voice should kick in starting around Eb-E4 and extend upwards from there. Then it will be a matter of developing it so that you can lean into that mix in your upper notes. Start at a medium to lighter volume and then start to crescendo on those notes. Try this Mix Voice Workout to continue extending and developing it: ua-cam.com/video/IGoRueDvIvA/v-deo.html

    you almost had me, i almost thought all you wanted was for me to get better. i thought that you understood that by waking up in the morning (if I'm serious about being who I really a) that you would just teach me the tools I needed to grow. but instead you offer a class which I'm guessing costs money, meaning everything about being worth more than gold every time i wake up was just a fairytale. and the reality is...well, I'm not good enough... unless I pay...
    Love, who you really are

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  3 роки тому +1

      You almost had me. I almost thought you were a person who would recognize how much work and money it takes to make a video where I offer FOR FREE knowledge that I have paid 10's of thousands of dollars to learn over 30 years of university, conferences, and voice lessons (at $300/hour!), and be grateful. But apparently, it's not enough, and I should give you everything I know for free and pay my mortgage with UA-cam likes.
      If you are really serious about learning this, then you will be willing to make the necessary sacrifices and pay people what they're worth when they bring value into your life. Expecting everything for free has nothing to do with you being "good enough." It's just entitlement, and it is a fairytale.
      Because you ARE good enough and worth more than gold, change your frame of mind and invest in yourself. It doesn't have to be me, I'm not here to sell you my course or my private coaching. If you see the value, invest in it. If you don't, keep looking. But value yourself enough to invest in your dreams.

    Yep. Lip Trills helped me the most in my singing. Just going down from the top of my head voice down to the lowest of my chest voice all the while trying to focus on lightening the weight around the 'break' area as I go back and forth. Overtime, the bridge between the two started to disappear slowly and slowly then one day I started to hear the balance of tone in my voice. Back then, my low range would be heavy and my high range would be lighter but now I can go from my low range to belting up without changing the weight and without increasing the volume.

    Oh my god, you genius, I just found it using the Hey method. Once you get the feeling and where its coming from, going back to it was so much easier (Never been able to do it before). Its going to need work, lots of excercise, but this enabled me to sing the first verse of Bohemiam Rhapsody using all voices. Started in Chest, went to head, then on the Mamaaaaa, used the mix, never been able to do it before, and over did it and hit the mix note very loud, no strain, absolutely incredible, over the moon, thanks so much. Its a good feeling, because when you do it, you feel where it is coming from, its not a neck strain note at all, but feels like its coming just above your vocal chords in your throat, only way I could describe it. Subscribed, and looking forward to more videos.

      @@SpencerWelchVocalStudio I am keeping things up and really enjoying it, been going for 6 weeks now across various videos on the internet. Learnt all about breath support, chest voice, belting, my head voice and doing 30 minutes of excercises per day, but never really got the mix voice part until today. Prior to this, singing higher notes was screechy, the only way I could put it, as usually either sung in a light head voice or did a bad habbit of singing from the neck and felt the pressure (Bad I know), but both sounded odd as the levels were too different in one, and screechy in the other. My Daughter asked me how things were going, and went into the passage tonight as didnt want to annoy the neighbours, and just sung the Mammaaa bit again. I hit the note very easy, pretty loud, and looked at her and put my arms out and shrugged my shoulders to say, "This is pretty easy", no strain. She was amazed at the difference, but now I'm going to follow your other video with Mix Voice Excercises and work on that for a couple of months, because at the moment, I otherthink the mix voice as my mind is telling me, "You can't hit that note" and at times I'm locking up and not hitting it and loosing it briefly until I relax into it again. Its all just a bit of a shock to the system and I'm 50 years old now, and wish I discovered all this 30 years ago :S

      Two things:
      1. Mix voice doesn't come naturally to a lot of people, myself included. You might have such strong habits that you need to work with a good voice teacher to guide you through the process. Like me, you could watch 100 videos and still not get it because you need personal feedback and customized exercises for your situation. In the end, that was the only way I got it.
      2. If you tend to pull up your chest voice that much, you might want to put off trying to find mix voice and just focus on developing your head voice for a while. Here's a great video to start with:

    I’m 17 and male and I’ve been singing for about a year now. When I try these exercises my voice either pulls my chest, or when I focus on maintaining a low volume, it breaks. I just can’t figure out how to pop into my mix.

      Mix voice doesn't come naturally to a lot of people. I was one of those people. You probably just need specialized feedback and guidance from a voice teacher. I wasted years trying to learn how to do this on my own...and then I met my teacher, and he helped find it.

    I feel like the "hey" exercise might've been the best exercise for me if I didn't have mixed voice already. I learned it by imitating a certain sound, memorizing what that feels like, and applying it to higher notes in songs. Another thing: it is a blend of chest and head, BUT it's also a form of adding both nasality and a little bit more volume than normal to your chest voice. At least, that's how I've come to realize and view mixed voice. If I were to teach someone an exercise in both finding and applying it on pitch, tell me if you think this exercise would work. I have them sing on the word "naa" with a wider mouth than usual, adding a little bit more volume than usual, having them heighten AND widen their mouth more and more as they go higher, and take it up the scale by having them do 5-3-1 movement. PLEASE let me know what you think.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  4 роки тому

      If by "NAA" you mean the AA in "natural", I would be careful using that as the first exercise to teach someone to find mixed voice. If a singer already has chest voice, a wider, more open vowel like AA will encourage them to stay trapped in chest as they ascend, especially if they widen and get louder as they sing higher. This is the recipe to teach belt but not mixed voice, at least in a majority of singers.
      The exception would be if they sang this AA with a thinned, twangy sound (what I call the pharyngeal voice) like a witch or SpongeBob. In that case, they have a better chance of thinning out their chest voice and allowing the voice to mix. But again, this would not be my first choice because of the acoustics necessary for mix voice.
      When I'm teaching mix, I start with a mid vowel like an AY or OU. I tell the student to keep the vowel and volume the same from bottom to top. You can try some of these exercises and hear them demonstrated here:
      7 Minute Mix Voice Workout ua-cam.com/video/IGoRueDvIvA/v-deo.html

    • @MadMusician
      @MadMusician 4 роки тому +1

      I was talking about the "naa" with the imitating of SpongeBob or a witch. Forgive me, I didn't know widening your mouth would keep you in chest voice (even though I personally feel the mixed voice when I widen an aah vowel). I personally think this is a better exercise demonstrated with audio, which is why I feel like you might be right saying this might not be the best first choice. As far as your point about the acoustics, I just know it doesn't hurt when you add more volume on a high note.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  4 роки тому

      When I train teachers, I teach them to take into account that what personally works for you may be very different from what the average person can do. Because wider vowels are composed of the acoustic properties that promote chest voice, most people won't find mix voice if you ascend from chest voice into the mixed range with a big, open vowel, even if you use the "witchy" sound quality. It's just too tempting to stick with chest voice and pull it up.
      It's also not advisable to encourage singers under these conditions to sing louder as they ascend. When someone is pulling up chest voice too high, their vocal cords are too thick to produce the required high notes, so often they will squeeze their vocal cords together more tightly and push more air to try to raise the pitch artificially. This condition is called pressed phonation. It might work for a few notes, but as the singer gets louder, the vocal cords will start colliding into each other with more and more force, potentially causing swelling and abuse.
      It's best to encourage singers to stay at the same volume or even slightly softer as they ascend so they can safely find their mix voice, and not confuse it with pulled-up chest. Then over time, they can build up to singing mix voice on all vowels at all volumes, so long as they maintain flexibility, freedom, and ease.
      I don't know if you are a singing teacher or thinking of becoming one, but if so, I encourage you to check out the Institute for Vocal Advancement (vocaladvancement.com), which trains voice teachers world-wide, mostly via online tools. I'm the Director of Education for the company and help to design the training modules that expound on some of the principles I outlined in this post. If you're interested in learning more... :)

Obviously I'd have to hear you to know, but it may be that you have some strong habits that prevent you from being able to relax and find mix voice on your own. I was that way, and I had to train with a great vocal coach for a few years before my mix was easy and strong.

Steven Tyler also get his shoulders up when taking air, what lots of singing teachers say you should not do... probably I will have to accept my voice as it is even with that almost blowing my mind... it's like a math question you cant understand, that problem you will never solve. Your point is well taken, but the title and objective of this video is "Finding Your Mix Voice." Therefore, the point was to help the viewer find mix voice for the first time, not learn how to apply it to a song. I wanted to keep this video focused on its purpose, and most people find mix for the first time with a sound or exercise.
      I will be making a "how to apply mix voice to songs" video soon though, so watch for that! Thanks for your comment.

  • @skyrasmus4760

    This video is so helpful! Thank you so much. I've been singing for a long time now and I never exactly knew how to use mixed voice but after using the Canadian "ooo-OOO-oooh".
    A quick tid-bit for people wanting to learn to add grit to their singing voice texture is to use the mixed voice (after finding it with these great techniques!) and lean into it a bit using the diaphragm to compress the air further, giving the note that gritty rock/blues sound without any of the pain or damage to the folds. Just be careful when trying it and if it hurts at all or makes the singer cough, then stop to rest and hold off for a few days on trying again.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  5 років тому

      Great, I'm glad it helped you. Always count on the Canadian OH haha.
      Yes, please be careful with using more air pressure to achieve grit, since additional air pressure is the #1 way singers can end up with edema (swelling) and eventually vocal damage if they don't stop and allow the folds to recover. Finding a rattle in the vocal fold closure or allowing the false folds to vibrate can be a safer choice. As in all things vocal, always be sensitive to any initial irritation and nip it in the bud quickly.

    The mixed voice is the bridge between your natural it encompasses part of you natural range and your falsetto. It's not as full as your natural but can be just as loud and it usually louder and stronger than your falsetto but not higher! It's your midrange notes between the two!

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  Рік тому

      I see what you're saying,, but I wouldn't use the word "falsetto" in that description. I prefer the term head voice, where the tone may be "headier" in quality but the vocal folds adduct (or close) more firmly in a similar laryngeal register (called modal) to chest and mix voice.
      Falsetto is a different laryngeal register altogether where the vocal folds are much thinner and close for a shorter amount of time per cycle.
      Also, falsetto is not high notes only, but it can overlap with the ranges of chest, mix, and head voice. In other words, I can sing low, medium, and high notes in falsetto....with a weaker production, of course.
      Whereas to sing with an intensity that matches chest and mix voice, the vocal folds have to adduct more firmly and with more depth than falsetto...in other words, a head voice configuration.

      As the famous quote goes, "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture." 😀 So I can try to guess what you are doing, but it wouldn't really do it justice without hearing you and working with you in a lesson. If it feels similar to chest voice but you are able to sing quite high without getting louder, it's probably some kind of light mix voice. But again, that's just an educated guess. I do offer Skype lessons if this is something you want to investigate in earnest.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  4 роки тому

      Singing with a chestier mix is a highly sought-after skill, but it is a subtle thing to develop which many students don't achieve properly because they don't have the patience. Power doesn't come from pushing or muscling your way into something louder. It's about using resonance and vowel tuning to get the maximum with the minimum effort. This usually requires training with an experienced teacher because the student will often need feedback from a trained ear. When the student does it correctly, it might feel like they aren't doing much internally, while it sounds big on the outside.

      You've found it when you're able to sing from your chest voice up into the range of A4-C5, while keeping the same vowel, the same volume, and good intonation. If you use a lot of twang in your head voice, you could be getting the beginnings of a mix, but with an unfinished tone, i.e. you sound twangy. A more finished mix will have the natural colour of your voice (with balanced bass and treble) similar to your speaking voice.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio

      I would have to hear you and work with you in a lesson to comment intelligently, but if you have this extension in your bottom range, that may explain why the upper range is weaker. Heavier voices tend to take longer to develop a fuller mix voice. Do you feel like you are starting stronger on the bottom and then breaking or flipping (either abruptly or gradually) as you ascend toward your upper middle and high range?

    I wish I could sing! Is there any hope for me?! Great video.

      Thank you and great question! Stats say only 5% of the population is actually tone deaf, so almost anyone can learn how to sing. It's a skill like learning to paint or play the piano. What kind of music would you love to sing (if you could)? :)

    Well, some people call this head voice.

      That's true. Show me 100 voice teachers, and I will show 100 different names for this voice quality: mix voice, mixed voice, head voice, voix mixte, primo passaggio, voce di testa piena, M1, the upper extension, F2 tracking H2, etc, etc... But I am less interested in the semantics than in teaching students how to do it, whatever you choose to call it at the end of the day.
