I'm an older grey headed woman. I was coming out of a grocery store with my cart full of groceries. A middle aged women jumps up from where she had been sitting and rushes over to me grabbing the front of my cart. "So where's your car?" She asked. "No!" I shouted and pulled the cart hard back toward me. She lifts her hands in surrender and responds, "I was only tryin to help..." " I don't need any help, thank you!" My heart was pounding by the time I got into my car and left. She probably only wanted a tip for helping me, but I wasn't going to take any chances. If I need help, I ask the bag boys - not some stranger hanging around a store.
1. No time for electronics 2. Scan for outliers 3. Check your six 4. Strengthen your peripheral vision 5. Always watch reflections 6. Always locate exits 7. Become a hard target 8. When in doubt, it’s a threat (do not underestimate potential threats; err on the side of caution and take appropriate action). 9. Trust your gut (do not minimise your instinctive feelings for potential dangers). 10. Practice visualising (role play in your mind potentially dangerous situations and what you would do to plan your safety in such situations; helps you to take action for different scenarios). 11. Fight, fight, fight!
My ex husband used to check the doors when he came home, he would see if the door was locked or not. If it was unlocked, he would say "bang, bang, you are all dead". It was a real eye opener. I ditched him, but kept the great tip! Now I do it when I visit my adult children. I can tell they are doing better keeping their doors locked.
You ditched him!?? There has to be more to this. I DRILL SECURITY into my loved ones every day. You were slack and he was trying to teach you the necessity to keep yourself and your household safe. Shame on you woman. He is probably better off with someone that has the brains to keep your family safe. YOU OBVIOUSLY DO NOT!!!
@@glenngriffon8203 what a ridiculous reply when you dont know her circumstances, he could have been an abuser for all you know. My ex was a locksmith and checked our security but got sentenced for domestic violence. Think before you reply when you never know other people's circumstances or what theyve been through!
#12 Never sit with your back to a door in a restaurant. My wife knows when we are eating out, She always leaves the chair facing the door open to me. She knows if something goes south, I will spring into action. We have also discussed not reading the grocery receipt while walking in the parking lot back to the car. Huge target. In the military they call it "having your head on a swivel". Be safe everyone.
One summer evening in northeast Indiana, I perceived the presence of someone following me in the store. He had no shopping cart and seemed to be pretending to shop. I tested my instincts by turning sharply to the right and then to the left. He continued to follow me. Finally, I headed for the main aisle, stopped abruptly and turned, looked him in the face, and shouted loudly, "What!?" It attracted the attention of several other shoppers. He mumbled an apology and walked away. Situational awareness is key, especially if you're alone. Thanks for these great tips!
Great tips. I am an older, physically disabled, person with severe PTSD. I utilize a service dog, 125 pound yellow lab, and while I may seem like an easy target my PTSD has me hyper vigilant so frequently see problems before they become a major issue. Additionally my dog is trained to allery me to people behind me and that really helps.
The ROLE PLAY suggestion is the best. I do this with my kids all the time. We talk about WHAT IF there's an earthquake, what if there's an active shooter, what if we are attacked, what if the power goes out ... And actually discuss it, talk it through. Contemplate the Unthinkable!
Look for ppl sitting in cars in p-lots. Some will be normal, others not. As for the peripheral vision, I can see colors all the way to 180 degrees to the sides, so I guess the black/white thing doesn’t apply to everyone. I experimented by taking a few colored markers, did not look at which ones I grabbed (so no mental bias) and could easily ID the colors in peripheral vision.
Not only good to be aware for safety reasons, but it just gets you off your phone and more grounded in reality in general. Something many people desperately need these days. (Though, I suppose if you're watching this video, you're probably already more aware than those people I just mentioned.) This list is a great reminder for everyone!!
This is so very practical, thank you Eric! This series is my absolute favorite because it is so practical arms applicable. Sharing with women and moms I know who worry about safety, which everyone should in this current clown world we live in! Hope your championship goes well, I'm sure it will because you work so hard and are so positive, I'm sure it will be a great experience no matter if you win or not!
You really touched on several critical points on Situational Awareness. A most excellent video. Unless I missed it, an extremely point to make is for people to take your list and apply it to their property and the inside of their home. Most individuals let their guard down when they get in their driveway, their garage, their yard, and inside of,their home. I don't go to the bathroom without some level of awareness. Again, great video! STAY FROSTY PEOPLE! WATCH YOUR SIX!!
I've lost all abilities for situational awareness. I hit my head a few years ago, poof, situational awareness gone just like that. That was my strong point, I knew everything around me at all times, now a train can go by before I know it's there.
Yes, I was training to be a pilot. It was constantly where you gonna land if you get an engine out where you gonna land if you get an engine out and periodically, I didn’t shut the engine off, but they would pull the power back so you had to make the decision. But then after you become a pilot, my husband used to get mad at me because I was if I had a problem this is where I’m gonna land if I had a problem this morning and he said she got stop talking like that. No because that was what was trained into my mind when I was a pilot what are you do if you have an engine out, kinda like the same thing continuously
Be careful of situations like you had with your jeep in FL. A lot of those folks are strung out on meth, which is where many of the FL man stories come about. I’m a little surprised this happened in the Publix parking lot. Publix is the upscale grocery store here.
Good video! Thank you. One technique to get you fired up, is picturing your kids going hungry, if this guy hurts you. Or picture your mother crying if you get hurt. My point: Many people won't get fired up if it's just them, but bring the family into the equation and everything changes. When you fight, think "Protect" and see how much more determination you muster. This can turn a half-assed effort into a serious threat to the criminal.
I practice all of these skills, especially the "what if" scenario game. I do that all the time. The only one i can't currently legally do is defend myself with anything, including my hands and feet for the next 4 years. I've completed the first year of probation (which i shouldn't even be on) and I'm legally unable to defend myself in any way. I've been told to roll over and die....
This is one of the best situational awareness vids I have seen. My training as a former bank guard has taught me to keep my head on a swivel! One thing you stated in this vid was fight like your life depended on it. This struck a nerve with me. I have always tried to avoid a physical confrontation. The reason being is because I have always felt that there is a beast inside me. One that I dont want to let loose. You articulated that with your sparring story. So new subscriber here...
It’s like driving. In city traffic, on country roads with switch backs and on coming dear. Look over your shoulder, look left and right! Always figure your “out” in that what’s my safe escape. Most of us only look straight ahead. I learned so much from a company sponsored advance driving lesson.
Thank you again, I started taking a Tae Kwon Do class when I was 54, oldest beginner in class I loved it but after close to 2 yrs my other knee had to be replaced, I’m even older now. I would like to find self defense of some kind to do don’t know where to look, also on limited income any suggestions?
At 10:40 I had to comment.. I remember when 9/11 happened and I had an eight hour VHS tape of the whole horrible event.. One thing that always stuck in my mind was as soon as the first building was hit people were looking up and staring at the smoke and fire and like a bunch of zombies gawking at the events unfolding.. My first I instinct would have been ( Get THE HELL OUT OF THERE!!) SADLY A LOT OF THE PEOPLE PERISHIED WHEN THOSE BUILDINGS FELL..THEY DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF A MILLION POUNDS OF DEBRIS FALLING FROM OVER A THOUSAND FEET. It's amazing how a crowd of people react when there is imminent DANGER PRESENT.. I have witnessed video of people running towards a house fire and watching the whole thing like they are at a movie... That's Not GOOD!! .If there are gas/propane containers in a fire they will EXPLODE... 🤯... 💥 DISTANCE FROM A FIRE IS YOUR ONLY WAY TO SURVIVE..OR YOU DIE!! Anyway.. Very good! I do something similar with my kids, where would you go right now IF...
Great video, I do all of these things as often as I can. I also like, Jeff Cooper’s color code of awareness.
Thank you!😊
Always be aware of the unexpected! My grandpa used to say to me all the time 😊

Tip To information, Doc!
Terrific! 👍✌️❤️
Great advice I practice every day. I grew up in NYC and lived in the hood and 5 points. I’m always in yellow. Ty

A lot of people lost self awareness
This is one of the best videos you have done! So many of us are blind to what could happen as life’s been so smooth and easy for us!
Agree 💯

Given Florida's CCW laws, that Jeep tire thief was especially stupid..
Good one. Told my neice... "lets do this" lol. My mini me. Peripheral play actually needs a sign in the yard now.
What do you suggest for self protection for women in wheelchairs?
a gun
Terribly sad our country has come to this. I think it started the day they took prayer out of public school. The decline of morality corruption hate

Since your family "stands with Israel" when are y'all going there to be on the front lines?
