I took my seal a meal 1 gallon bags and sealed flour, sugar, dried milk all the beans, spice packets, noodles but stopped before it crushed them. Just got most air out. Oats as well. Bought canned pineapple. Has like a 4 year expiration date to begin with. Remember they stated a so called aluminum shortage so they made cans thinner do they don’t hold up. Any dents or dings are an issue or they can last a long time. I sealed flour as well. Air oxidizes food.

My father-in-law (born in 1907) built his own smoke house from logs he cut from his own property to smoke the hogs he butchered every fall. That was the very best pork I've ever eaten. I'm trying to talk my son into building me one. Could come in very handy. 🇺🇸

Here is my list of basic, inexpensive, high calorie, survival foods that can be packaged for 20 years of storage and will never be damaged by freezing temperatures: rolled oats, plain hominy grits, plain white rice, plain dried pasta (spaghetti or macaroni usually cost the least), plain dehydrated potatoes (flakes or shreds), plain cornmeal, dried lentils (quickest cooking of all the dried legumes), plain culinary salt and granulated white cane sugar. These foods will give you a foundation for meals supplemented with fresh or canned vegetables, meat, cooking oil, butter, cheese, eggs, etc.
Most of these dry, long-term storage foods should be packaged in heat-sealed Mylar bags along with oxygen absorbers, labeled (painter's tape and a Sharpie marker) and placed inside a closed cardboard box or a plastic bucket or tote with a tight-fitting lid (to prevent accidental punctures of the Mylar) and stored in a cool, vermin-free pantry. The salt and the sugar are the exceptions and can be stored directly in food-safe, moisture-proof containers that have air-tight lids (reused one liter soda bottles, canning jars...). These latter two foods can store forever if kept away from moisture and vermin -- no oxygen absorbers ever needed.
If you have a food dehydrator machine, you can also dehydrate fresh, frozen or canned fruit and vegetables until the food is shrunken and very hard and then package it for long-term storage. If you have non-stick sheets to place on top of the dehydrator's mesh sheets, you can dehydrate canned/jarred tomato sauce, tomato paste, frozen fruit (thaw first, will give off a lot of juice during drying), canned tomatoes, tomato-based pasta sauce (only the low-fat type that does not have meat or cheese added), tomatillo sauce, tomato salsa, sliced pickled jalapeno peppers, applesauce, whole cranberry sauce and canned pumpkin puree. Yes, you could make Thanksgiving dinner with just your food storage and a thawed turkey (or canned turkey meat if going the casserole route).
Bags of frozen mixed peas and carrots are my favorite food to dehydrate and then package in Mylar for long-term storage. Just place the frozen veggies on the dehydrator racks in a thin layer, load into the dehydrator and let completely thaw before dehydrating. Then package in Mylar bags along with fresh oxygen absorbers and heat seal and label. Useful in homemade soups, pasta sauces, stews and rice dishes or just as a vegetable side dish.
When you have built up a good supply of basic food storage (2000 calories per person, per day, for at least 30 days of food) you will be able to greatly reduce the amount of food you would need to buy if you are laid off from work and have to rely upon your savings or you get warning to shelter in place or if a natural disaster or a world war disrupts the food supply chain. And if there is never a need for the emergency food? You can still use that food sometime in the future when the same foods will likely cost even more than they do now.
When it comes to saving money on groceries, when there is a steady increase in prices every year, having long-term food storage is better than money in the bank because you have already locked in the prices at time of purchase. And food storage is insurance against hunger during hard times. When you have basic food storage and prices are too high, you can use your money to just buy those fresh foods (meat, dairy, cooking fats...) that can be used with your basic food storage ingredients to make nutritious and filling meals.
And dehydrated food storage weighs a lot less and takes up a lot less storage space than regular canned goods. This can make a big difference if you live in an apartment or small house and storage space is very limited. Or if you need to load a lot of food storage into your vehicle and evacuate away from danger. And a winter power outage will NEVER harm dry food storage even if the temperature inside your home is low enough to freeze and break the seals on cans and jars of wet foods.

Commercially canned meats are relatively expensive. Home canned meats last just as long as commercially canned (provided seal in NOT compromised) and are considerably cheaper, pound for pound. Especially if you can catch a good sale. I've been doing that for years!

My policy with rice, etc. is to freeze it for at least a week before storing. If you buy bulk wheat berries, make sure you do this. This helps with the possibility of bugs. My favorite bean is pintos. I like to cook it with a smoked meat or bacon grease for flavor and fat. I also use Goya ham seasoning if I don't have a meat on hand. Save that bacon grease for cooking and flavoring. Great for cooking your eggs and not just letting it go to waste.

When you take the rice out of the freezer, doesn't water condense on it from hitting the warmer air of the room? Do you have to make sure there is no mosture in it before you seal it up?

I highly recommend people pick up a couple of vegan cookbooks. No,I'm not saying you should be vegan, but many people are putting aside things like beans and lentils and rice. Having a good vegan book will help you to make tasty meals with these ingredients. Maybe yo want to ave your eggs for something else, but need to bake a cake or treat. Learning about egg replacement will be a great help. I do recommend, believe it or not, but a middle eastern vegetarian cookbook. I recommend a book called classic vegetarian cooking from the middle east and north africa by Habeeb Salloum. Another book is called olive rees and Honey a treasury of vegetarian recipes from Jewish communities around the world. And a book on vegetarian cooking from India some of these recipes are hundreds if not thousands of years old. Even earlier than bible times. Of curse many do have " new world " vegetables , but their origins are before the new world. Many can be easily made Fat free, so you can spare your oils and fats for other things.

You can freeze your rice for three days before you store it. That will kill all the critters and larvae. If you want to be really careful you let the rice thaw and then freeze for another 3 days. That will get the critters who hatched after the rice thawed. Evidently freezing doesn’t kill eggs, thus the second freeze after they hatch!

      Unopened active dry yeast
Can last up to two years if stored in a cool, dry place, like a pantry or refrigerator. Exposure to heat, humidity, or oxygen can reduce its activity.
      Opened active dry yeast
Can last four months in the refrigerator or six months in the freezer if stored in an airtight container away from drafts.
      Fresh yeast
Can last about two weeks in the refrigerator and shouldn't be frozen. To prevent it from drying out or steaming up, you can line a small container with parchment paper, place the unwrapped yeast inside, cover with more paper, and then add a

Have to disagree with you somewhat on all canned food will last forever....High acid foods for example, green beans, tomato etc. will eat away the inside of the can and canned food like pastas, beans, potatoes will become mush but still edible ... About 10 years, maybe less is how long they can last and that rule applies to home canned foods too ...high acid foods will eat away the metal lids and certain foods will become mush.
