I have 2 equal files, raw from Black and Xavc from A7S3. And the truth is Blackmagic has MUCH better dynamic range, much better colors and overall image
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's always great to hear different perspectives. The Blackmagic definitely has a strong reputation for its dynamic range and color science, which makes it a favorite among many filmmakers. The A7SIII, on the other hand, shines in low light and offers fantastic flexibility with its autofocus and video capabilities. Both have their strengths, so it really comes down to what specific features are most important for your projects. Out of curiosity, what kind of projects do you typically work on, and how do these cameras fit into your workflow?
I’m curious to know what you rated the a7siii at. If it was 800EI then there would have been much more to gain if you shot it at 1600-2000EI. Let’s not forget about the 16bit Raw through the Atomos recorder. Think it would have been good to match the colours identically since you were talking about cine match and intern making it harder for us to guess the the difference could have shown us the colour difference at the end of the guess test.
Nice video man. Guessed from the jump that Cam B was the full frame, and it’s the one I preferred. The fuller colors on the skin were the dead giveaway. But you did a great job matching them together.
The dynamic range seems quite noticeable, BMCC wins there easily. Actually found the Sony's footage sharper, but then again I am looking at this through UA-cam's compression lens. Wish BMCC had better autofocus and low light performance for real world scenarios and independent video makers.
I have a7iv (similar to a7s3) and bmccff and the image is much better on the bm - less digital, colour science is much better and you don’t need to worry about wb as it’s RAW. Sony is doing post automatic noise reduction so it looks videoy
I always prefer the colors on Blackmagic cameras, especially compared to Sony's. The big price drop made grabbing one a no brainer. Although you can eventually fiddle with settings, I just plain love the Blackmagic color right from the camera. All it takes is one of the base LUTs like Extended Video and you're good to go. Besides the color there's a softness that's a bit more subtle. It's sharp, but at the same time, soft using the default settings. Lastly, there is simply no better menu system than Blackmagic's. My only complaint is that you can't point the screen at yourself for self-shooting.
To be honest a lot of people say that BM has a better colour science etc. but to me, based on what I see in comparisons, Sony is not worse in my opinion, it’s just more neutral and can be easily tuned to be more punchy like BM. I use CamMackey LUTs in DaVinci and it always gives me more richer and deeper colours than standard ways to grade SLog and better than Phantom LUTs in my opinion.
Would you mind sharing the first handheld clip from both cameras RAW so we can play with the grade? I have a feeling the Sony has better dynamic range in all of the clips despite what you say and this one is a good test. How did you come to the conclusion that the BM has more?
Excellent comparison, which clearly shows image differences between the two cameras. I definitely prefer BMCC mainly because of better colours. I think that because of just image quality, RAW option and price BMCC 6K wins for all projects where you don't need extreme low light capability, autofocus and IBIS.
Thanks man, I'm torn between the 2 of them but am leaning towards the bmcc. Much respect for the Helios, I got mine about 7 years ago. It's definitely a specialty lens but when matched accordingly to a proper scene, it definitely shows it uniqueness in a very beautiful way!
Gotcha! If you are mostly behind camera I would probably lean toward the black magic. If you ever see yourself using autofocus obviously the Sony will be better lol. I do just about everything, narrative, commercial. Now I’m mostly creating content. So my gear purchases have shifted to minimal, lighter weight items
well, people who only shoot mirrorless (specially Pani and Sony) normalize the non-raw 'video' look of those cameras, so they tend to prefer that look over the more filmic ones
Both are great! It comes down to your preference on how you shoot. A7siii is the camera I pickup for most projects. It can do everything well, but if you are behind the camera the black magic is nice to use!
Coming from bmd myself and moving to the fx3 aka a7s3, definitely the c6k looks more filmic and richer in tonality...something I always told myself when I went to sony, is that below middle grey it is so desaturated and always asked myself if its not how sony fix their horrible greenish skin tones they suffered from before? The c6k seems to have better lattitude in the shadows and its why we think it has better dynamic range but it does not..I really need to find an atomos to try out the RAW from the fx3(since the denoiser is not working there) and maybe we dont even need to have a 2nd c6k body to pull off filmic images. 😌
Great point! I tested ProRes Raw on my A7siii back in the day and unfortunately the noise reduction was still applied at 12,800. Not sure if that’s been fixed since then, or if the FX3 differs, but I thought I’d give you a heads up
The cameras name is the Black Magic Cinema Camera 6K, but it can be confused with the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K (BMPCC) which is super 35. I wanted to be clear these were both full frame cameras
Claimed stops score is 15 to 13.5. 12.4 on cine d is the real score and 11 7 should be close for the bm as that was the cine d score for the pocket 6k which claims the about same Dr as the full frame. Komodo scored 12.7 and the raptor had a true 13 plus, 14 with recovery. Only arri tops that with a true 15, though they claim 17 plus. Stop saying "12 bit" too because 12bit log and 12bit linear is apples to oranges. 12bit log is practically 16bit linear so lumping it in with the raw capability of the s1h, fs7, sigma fp, ect is full out wrong. 12bit raw is arri raw, braw, pro res raw but only if you can feed it 16 bits.
The look of Sony was better in my eyes. However, this result is most likely because you are not yet familiar with the color grading of BMCC 6K. I used to be a Sony user, and now I use Panasonic and have BMCC 6K FF. In fact, BMCC shows its true value the more you color grade it. In my experience, Panasonic's colors are clearly better than Sony's, and Blackmagic is even better than Panasonic's. When doing color grading, I often experienced that Sony no longer does color grading naturally at some point. Sony requires a difficult and arduous process to create the look and skin tone I want, and requires a lot of fine tuning and time. Despite such efforts, there are still limitations that are difficult to overcome. Panasonic is much easier and Blackmagic often gives satisfactory results with just a few clicks. I also use cinematch often, but I am curious about which camera you matched Cinematch to. The results will be different depending on the target camera.
I appreciate your insights on color grading! It's interesting to hear how your experience with different cameras has shaped your perspective. Each camera has its strengths, and it’s great to see you exploring the possibilities with BMCC 6K.
@@NatesFilmTutorials well the A7siii looks very digital and the bmcc 6k reminds me of the Arri min lf’s image. The bmcc 6k ff is very close. Yeah the dynamic range isn’t the same but color and image bmcc 6k are close and that’s my reason for thinking it’s better than the A7siii. The colors don’t pop out like blackmagic.
You got me! lol I honestly like both. If I'm on a set with a 1st ac to pull focus, I would bring the Black Magic. Anything solo shooting, I'm brining the Sony!
Good insight! I usually find the A7siii a bit too sharp, (I typically turning down sharpness in camera) and like pairing it with vintage lenses and mist filters. BMCC looks more detailed in my opinion. Appreciate your input!
@@NatesFilmTutorials and actually after I started noticing everything else, I thought B was was better handling the dynamic range - so I guess I liked bith 😂
Very similar, until you factor in the amazing autofocus on the Sony and then it’s easy to decide, SONY all the way! Especially for run and gun shooting.
I got one in the crazy sale too and love it! I do feel they are slightly different tools for different styles of shooting. Sometimes I think I need IBIS and AF, but 95% of the time I don't
I agree! I like the large screen and image flexibility for higher end shoots. I can see me using that for on set with a crew, and the A7siii as my content creation camera run n' gun

Sony, more details in the shadows.

can you send a link to these raw files? I wanna test too
The full frame just has fuller richer colors. I just grabbed a bmcc after using clog3 for the last year... wowzers!!!
Nice! It’s going to be hard to go back, even though I will probably still use my A7siii as my main camera, and save the full frame for bigger projects
Nice video man. Guessed from the jump that Cam B was the full frame, and it’s the one I preferred. The fuller colors on the skin were the dead giveaway. But you did a great job matching them together.

100% Agreed! Would love a flip out screen on a black magic camera!
7SIII looks much sharper or is it just the focus point missed a bit?
being that theres no auto focus on the bmpcc and they were shooting wide open I don't doubt it was a bit off when solo shooting themselves.
