They’ve improved the design of the shipping packaging. There’s cutouts for your hands on either sides now that allows you to just grasp the driver and lift it out. In addition, the screws now screw into threaded inserts that don’t have nuts on the back. I had no spin in place issues. I bought 4 of these. Somehow UPS shattered the rims holding the drivers on 2 out of the 4. Half inch plywood and they still found a way to damage the packaging. By some miracle, the drivers themselves are fine.
It is exciting! I have the box assembly almost completely filmed too... so I hop to get that out in the next week or so. Painting will take a while since I am going to try for some custom graphics.
Thank you for reviewing this subwoofer. I've actually been checking it out on Parts Express. I can't wait to see the unfolding of the rest of the videos. I appreciate your work. I've also been looking at the UM 18" subwoofers, I just haven't pulled the trigger on them because I'm not sure of the sheer power that I could get out of them as far as db's are concerned. I believe that they sound good for low frequencies which I "Love" based on the reviews, but I also want them to be very "Loud and Deep" and I'm not sure if 1000 rms is enough. I Love the low frequencies. Thanks again.
Well that’s why you buy multiples. 4 of them would be 4k and you got all that extra cone area! Don’t get me wrong your not gonna hit like one DD9918 but it will still be decent might suprise you!
@@tammyforbes2101 Yes. More cone area is better. I've actually built a couple of dual 18" subwoofer enclosures. I built them around mid May 2020. They sound pretty good, I just haven't had the chance to test them out by playing really, really nice subwoofers in them that have high excursion like the Dayton Audio UM-18s and so forth. I would love to have subs with at least 30mm x-max one way, unlike pro audio subs that only have 10mm or so of x-max one direction. These are the enclosures that I've built with Rockville Audio RVW-18" pro audio subwoofers in them.ua-cam.com/video/jPR4y6CwsWM/v-deo.html
And so it begins... I'm sure that if you told Dayton Audio about your unboxing experience, they'd take a look into doing a better job. Looked to be pretty secure for shipping, but if unboxing is a nightmare, they might want to rethink their process. Since you've bought a fair number of their subs, they should listen to your input. I hope your next build series is a 21" Vortex in a Devastator...
I don't think I am on the radar for them. I have sent them a scad of notes but never got a reply. But yeah, I have spend many thousands with them on products to review.
@@JilesMcCoy thanks! I'm surprised you still need a Cloudlifter with the RodeCaster. I've been eyeing the Motu M2 for use with the SMB7 after someone told me the RodeCaster is a waste for me. My goal is to make it on your podcast. lol
@@gufiaito69able They sell enclosures for 21" drivers. I was about to buy a GSG Audio enclosure and two Eminence 21" subs but I think I'll wait to see how these compare...
I hate t-nuts and hurricane nuts. If you have to use them, the only way I've found to almost completely eliminate the spinning out issue, is to drill a small hole in the edge of the t-nut and put a small sheetrock screw through that hole into the wood. You can only do this before you assemble the box though.
This thing Is huuge. I just imagining myself the heavy Bass it might produce. I am using two, only 12inch subs in my room and they can easily follow frequency under 25Hz. I am sure you will enjoy Its performance in your home theater. :)
I am going to assume the speaker was damaged during removal, and maybe the reason you never showed this in action. I would totally expect them to swap it out if the surround became damaged as a result of an over zealous warehouse worker with a screw gun. If you managed to get it out without damage I look forward to seeing how it turned out. Seems like an awesome sub.

Thats really good news. Glad your 4 survived ok!
Exciting! Thanks for posting this video Jiles. I’ve dealt with the ‘spinning t-nut issue’ and you’re right zero fun flags.

Glad you like them!

Fo shizzle.

That is EXACTLY why I do not use T nuts or insert nuts. I even added epoxy to the threads on mine and 1 still came loose.
I just recently installed 2 of these in my Honda Civic. Love how they sound. Definately get low and loud
Got some pics for us?
I have 2 Dayton reference 12's, but now I want to have 2 of these instead.
Hello, how many Hz can this 21 sub go down to?
It can go as low as you want
But at what DB?
My dream driver!
Its a monster!
My Ultimax 18 already tears my house apart enough.
I'm pretty sure this would deliver the finishing blow to this poor old house. haha
Only 1 way to find out!
Is the high Fs going to be of concern?
Absolutely. But that is super common in 21" subs. Someone should make a high excursion model with a 20hz FS.
And so it begins...

Good vid. Out of curiosity, what audio interface do you with what looks like a Shure SMB7?
It is indeed a Shure SM7B. I use a Rode RodeCaster Pro. And a Cloudlifter.

Any plans to install this in your Devastator to see if there is much difference from the Eminence that was originally installed?
I dont plan to trip the Deva apart at this point. This will be going in a Full Marty enclosure where it should be at its best.
I know I have heard that exact same unboxing issue before in a UA-cam video, is this a new video?
It’s been out for about 11 hours.
Going yo wait on this build to see if I go with these or 18 😬
Cool! Next part should be out in about a week!

The Surround and the .. spider I think.

can I build a parametric speakers using this?
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a parametric speaker.
Hi how do you like the Kraken and how does it compare to the other 2 PA subwoofer you have.
Not sure just yet. Paint is going on the box right now.

I’ll be using a Sinbosen amp on my subs.
