If you’re liking half of the things you said in the video then you’re gonna love the dragons, believe the hype!
Dragons are so good. I had 92a clouds that I thought were game changers but then I had to replace them and got the Dragons and won’t look back.
Bollox dragons suck arse
I bet these feel more like wheels than dragons
Dragon's are great and a lot of the hype around them is certainly true, however a huge problem I find is that a lot of people aren't skating them long term before reviewing. My set have chipped a lot, and they get a lot of weird crevices, they chip in a similar way to my Bones X97 which makes sense as it is a similar formula.
Dragon wheels are smooth, and they slide well, especially in the rougher spots, however they do not roll fast and they are not durable.
I never understood why people waste their money on cheap bearings. buy a high quality set thats rebuidable, lube them up, theyre good to go for YEARS and YEARS.
I have the Bones X formula wheels for a year now (2nd set). If you like a wheel that is soft and nice to ride on rough ground and also slide on hard concrete, then you really should try these. I skate allot in skateparks with hard concrete and they feel like you are riding on clouds, while still sliding good. I also skate allot from a to b (to work or to my friends) and they never failed me on rough ground with a lot a cracks. Imo they are worth the money. Never tried Sapphires or dragons tho, so I don't know the differences.
edit: correted some misspellings (German guy trying his best)
X97 > Dragon 93s x100000 can vouge. Dragons feel rubbery and sound awful. they're OK as a cruiser wheel that CAN slide but X97s are the truth. One of the best wheels in the quiver. Coming form a F4 99 lover.
Love seeing you grinding it out on the curbs and getting stuck. It’s very real to see a good skater figuring out a spot.
lol this guy is so hard on Powell. first "I wasn't compelled to try the dragons...." OK.... but then "I got some knockoff bones swiss on TEMU" haha stay wild Zack!
he aint wild and you dont have to be a brain surgeon to know spitfire is giving him free stuff and/or money
@@chrhadden 👍 🤴 🧠 🏆 💯
I was a spitfireguy theough andthrough for over two decades. Formula4 was my definitive wheel. Moved to a different city with really crusty ground and a lot of rain. 101F4 was rough and turned wet asphalt into ice. Used 99F4 constantly and was thinking about 97. Then the Dragon hype came, tried them and can't go back. I was hoping spitfire came with something similar the Bones made the X formula. Im loving the wheels war not gonna lie.
I have the F4 87 Duro (which I use) and the Dragon wheel (which I haven't really skated). Appreciate your perspective.
spits are launching a new 93 "soft slides" april 1st! I gotta try em
Picked up some Dragon wheels recently, It was between those and spitfire sapphires. I'm glad I went with the Dragons.
I love the dragon's. Powersliding crust is very fun with them.
I like the way this guy talks. Never pauses for a breath of air and almost whispery tone like someone is sleeping in the next room.
I was just looking for reviews on these, because I was setting up a board for skating some super crusty roads and sidewalks. Glad to see this! However, the review I *really* want to see would be a comparison of these vs Dragons, going through powerslides, then slides and grinds on different materials like curbs vs metal ledges, etc. For my immediate setup, I decided to try Spitfire 80HD wheels. They don’t slide well on metal edges, but they are awesome for crusty roads, and they’ve been a really fun time.
Dragons.
@@jimmyhuang8730 I’ve tried them and enjoyed them, but I prefer X97 for all-rounders and G-Slides or these 80HD for real distance cruising on truly rough spots
Gslides are better than dragons because more contact patch and bigger, so you will go faster than dragons while roll over more stuff. They are made for downhill freeride, not cruising, so they are harder to flatspot and only exist to slide. You just gotta break them in first if plan to do any tricks. If you can't slide them, means your posture is off, so keep your weight over front trucks more.
"Dillweed since 79" 😂😂
I love spitfire wheels all day! The logo hooked me as a kid and the quality hooked me as a skater. But i will say, the best wheel I’ve had yet is the dragon formulas. Got used to them rather quickly compared to other changes I’ve made to my set up. But the one downside i found in the dragon wheels is that the spot that holds the bearing lost its shape and could not longer hold the bearing in place tightly. But that was after a year of skating 3-4 days a week in arizona (mostly during summer so 110+ degrees)
I've been riding the 54mm sapphire wheels since I started to relearn how to skate and man I like these wheels. It did took me a while to get comfortable with the size of the wheel, but overall they're my favorite wheels to skate in.
Bit of info from a person who also does downhill longboard freeride. Make sure to break your softer wheels in before trying any tricks. There is like a skin ontop of wheels when wheels are made because there is a layer thats really grippy thats a result of the mold or if old wheels that havent been used for years. So just go do some fast little slides to remove that layer, just dont go full 90 as you will flatspot your wheels. Saying that, Powell dragons and gslides are actually supposed to not flatspot either as people use them for tech sliding (more so gslides,) dunno about these wheels though. Yes you can most definitely slide soft wheels, you just need the correct posture. I used to use ricta clouds for sliding for years because try to avoid longboard companies as much as possible for downhill things lol. (Its not powerslides, actual drifting as more control slides that keep wheels from spinning so they dont flatspot going full 90 degrees like how some power slide harder wheels. If the wheels cone, youre drifting, if your wheels flat spot, youre powersliding.)
I had the dragons and upgraded to the andy nano cube dragons. Love 'em.
Dragon wheels are wayyyy better! They actually slide!
Dragons for life ?!?
@@libramoon9968nothing better for street. If 97X was out in the 80s... it would have made Powell Peralta even more money 💰
Ive heard they're like ricta clouds.
I skate ricta clouds on my street deck.
Clouds are phenom for reverts and still being able to handle pebbles at the same time
Ricta Crystal Cores have a hard core (cause them to make a sound) and they are 95a durometer; which is right in between Bones Dragons 93a and Bones X97 97a. They are good for street and park. They are clear, too, and they slide.
they need to make more 95a wheels . thats a good spot for me.
Happy to see you uploading more consistently! Love your vids
I bought the 58mm Purple ones they are insane over cracks and I ride like 2 miles a day and other than them being a little noisy compared to my old cruiser wheels other than that, no complaints!
I’ve ordered some of them for a custom cruiser! How do you find tricks in them?
@@S.SPEN7890 Well the tricks I do work just fine!
Stop avoiding the dragons, the hype isn't unwarranted. There are tons of soft skateboard wheels that are hard to slide, your avoiding like the only formula that does it well.
He won't get Dragons because he hates Powell Peralta can't you figure that out by now?
I love Spitfire but dragons are elite
Agreed. I'm glad I went with the Dragons over SF sapphires.
🐉 dragons or formula X.👍 I am a big fan of spitfire. But untill they come out with something better than dragons or X, I'm sticking to them. I was really hoping these spitfire wheels would be better.
Thats why I went with the Dragons over the SF sapphires
There might be something coming!
I just wish we had slanted curbs for slappy's on the east coast; it's so hard to find good curbs.
Just a thought, you can get ace hangers separately from the trucks - would be even quicker to change out wheels with them already on their own hangers.
Someone gave me the hangers I’m riding, trying the 60s but prefer 66
where do you get hangers separate? i have been looking
@@chrhadden mesa skate supply has them last I checked
i just got the spitfires soft sliders 1 day ago, they are not bad at all so far idk about trying the bones wheels yet i've seen lots of videos
Apples and oranges to compare to Dragons. What makes Dragons special is that they dampen vibrations AND slide like a hard wheel. They lose performance on perfect ground because they don't have the rebound of a hard wheel, but for some spots and tricks they're going to perform better than a soft outer on a hard core.
love those candy wheels
Excellent, those wheels look like a good set to keep in your skate box ✅
Thanks!
They look just like Ricta Crystal Cores
Have you skated the Red Shannahan Pro Ricta Crystal Cores? (I'm currently skating them in 54mm & I love em!!!)
I'm curious to see what you think about them compared to the Spitfire Sapphires 🤩
DAmn that first spot looks amazing! back 3 outta the qp was rad. fuck yeah zack
Thanks dude! Such a cool spot
For what you want to do (i.e., slappy grinds on crusty spots), I think you should go for bigger wheels. If you don't want to change trucks or add risers, the wheel should be opposite the sapphire, hard duro roadside and soft duro coreside. Don't know who makes those. Or just add a shock pad, too. The cheapest solution.
Yeah I think you have to have spacers super tight. And then they (supposedly might) make bearing last a lot longer.
It also kinda requires your spacers to be somewhat matched with your wheel, or some manual trimming/mucking with the wheel core and/or spacer. Because so many people don't use spacers, manufacturers don't necessarily keep tolerances that guarantee the wheel will perfectly match the spacers.
It initially seemed like a good idea to me, but it also kinda seems like it's only going to work with some combos, and might be a lot of hassle. I bought several different trucks/wheels/bearings to experiment with, and have some board setups where it just worked, and some others that I can't seem to get it right.
My longboards have spacers tho, and those are working perfectly. I think it's more ubiquitous there, and thus probably tends to work better.
There are 2 sizes of spacers.
10mm and 12 mm.
almost every skater does not use spacers. they mess up the sound, they slow the wheel , dont fit right and they will give you aids. everybody knows that sheesh
I skated Spit F4's since they came out... tried Dragon wheels... too soft... tried Bone's X99... now I skate X99's.
Try the Powell Peralta nano cubics 97a! Best wheel ever!!!
Agree 100%
i tried the green ones from spitfire 53mm, they are oke for asphalt and stuff, now i use ricta clouds 78Du for skating to skatepark and switching to bones x formula 97 in the park, bones x formula is my wheel to go, tried dragons aswell, but i prefer x formula
Them spacers have a purpose and it’s to have all the tension on the inner ring of the bearing. I would think tho that since your spacer was ran through the tension was both on the outside and inside rings of the bearings pressing the balls against both sides there causing way to much friction to spin freely
the core of the wheel is the spacer. spacers change the sound of the skateboard and they noticeably slow your speed. i dont know any serious skater that uses them
@chrhadden the core is not the spacer.
If you use washers and spacers, bearings last for decades.
I have Swiss ceramics that are 20 years old.
Perhaps in the future you can test out the Dragon Formula Mini Cubics. Since following your videos I have a feeling the 97A 58mm ones might be an interesting video to consider doing in the future. With the wheels being offset and having a rounded outside and straight edge on the inside it seems like something a transition skater like yourself might like.
Your getting two different wheels confused, your speaking of the nano cubics, not the mini cubics. The mini cubics are 64mm 95a, and are a reissue. The nano cubics are Andy's design, based off the mini cubics, with x formula (from everything I've seen Peralta and bones share the same formula for X and dragon 97a). The nano cubics are also available in 93a now.
I bought a set of the first nano cubics, the 52mm 97a; but didn't account for just how much wider they were going to be. Need to account for the size difference with upsizing your deck, or downsizing your trucks. Haven't gotten around to doing that yet to have a good comparison between them and the dragons.
He won't review dragons because he's a Powell Peralta hater LOL.
@@Ryoubreathingnow, thanks for clarifying. The Mini and Nano. The comparison I think is going to be hard unless we are comparing lets say the V6 shape vs the Nano Cubics which I feel would be the best ones to compare. Which shape dragons are you riding?
i use those and 3 washers on the inside only. thats good for any grind on the street or ramps
58mm dragons is the only wheel i need for the street. i cant believe you didn't know about the spacers as long as you have been in this
Dowdy rules 🙌🏽
60mm slimeballs, they are 97a coupled with paris trucks (high clearance) = best setup for crusty spots and ditches !
Another well made informative vid! Nice job! And I wish I could skate 1/10th as well as you!
Thought about trying the OJ double duros?
Zack would really like your thoughts on the Ricta wheels against Spitfires, God bless man
I thought I'd skate spitfire f4's forever, but after trying the dragons I can't go back for many reasons but most of all for the impact reduction. Landing on even the 99a tablets I have just feels so jarring and hurts my aging knees like crazy lol
If I had nice parks around me to skate, I might go back to the f4's, but these saphire wheels definitely are interesting...
I mean the Sapphires look awesome but I think the Dragons take the prize in functionality.
I must try!
The dragons feel kind of gummy though.
@@daffyduckling6958 that they do by comparison to the hard wheels. But that’s what you get with softer wheels. They do slide very nice for 93As. I have 95a OJ Nomads and while they feel harder and have a less forgiving riding experience they don’t slide as easy as the Dragons I feel.
Soft sliders are the way to go
Dragons are incredible. I’ll never use another wheel in the street.
FULL ON. 🐉🐉🐉👍
Sliding on a soft wheel and skating to testing the standards of skating other spots
Dragons 1000000X better than those SF sapphire nonsense, in fact better than any brand wheels 97A or softer for street. I ride SFF4 99A for park but for street dragons only, 97X would have been the best back in the 80s and early 90s before all the skate parks were build though..
The Dragons are worth the hype ! Support your local .
He won't touch Dragons he got fake bones Swiss lol.
And to be honest, minilogo bearings at below $10 is as good as any bearings and not much behind in Bones Swiss in any way..
What was your homies camera set up @ the ditch spot? really liked how it looked.
Not sure exactly but he has a channel too, linked in description
Awesome🔥🔥🔥
Now please 🙏 do a PP Nano cubic, a 93 dragon, Bones X97 and X99.
I skated those, dragons for a year 2 sets. 2 sets x 97 now on x 99. Skate street&park& miniramps bowls etc. Harder wheels feel faster on hard smooth surfaces and slide a bit better. Softer for street better. For street defenitely x 97 and dragons. But dragons stick on metal so not going back but miss the soo nice rolling around just beatable almost too perfect. Bit sticky on wood also but okay. X97 the better alrounder if you like metal ledge&copingskating without waxing al lot.. Not soo fast and smooth on steet as dragons. X 99 grear but park&smoother streets feels more like spitfires 99a but with bit softer feel / smoothness. The older 99a easy streets feel harder as 99a x formula, X formula feels bit softer for its durometer but still slides fine. Cubics work exacky as andy tells slappies feel easier& better. Locking really good also. But pivots to fakies etc are a bit harder because the locking locking.
@@remcovanbuuren5383that's basically the review. These wheels been out a long time now and people like this has tested them and know exactly what's what, the other brands are all nonsense at this point and the Powell hater brought into it going against it lol!!!!
@@remcovanbuuren5383 I have X97 V6 56mm, right now, and I foresee them becoming my forever winter wheel. In April or may, I might go for exactly the same in X99.
I mostly skate a derelict factory with dusty wood mini ramps, a street course, and a 6’-7’ bowl. No heat on, but hey, at least there’s lights.
99a spits has me drifting and sometimes slipping out, even in summer.
STF99a, is okay I guess, but not grippy enough for winter.
Of course your setting up new wheels with bones Swiss bearings
Do they powerslide ok? Im riding the 87a OJ keyframes and like them but they dont powerslide. Fellow oside resident here, happy new year
Happy new year! They slide on asphalt but not as good on smooth concrete
I’ve also seen OJ’s try to do the dual durometer thing like this. It’s not as good as the new urethane formula invented for the Dragons.
is this spot in carlsbad???
Sure is
Hate to say it but dragons are FAR better of crusty spots they slide WAY better.
The spitfires are great for ramps and bowls for older knees/feet or filming or cruising while sounding like you're not cruising .. because they sound like normal wheels but have some cushion.
Don't be dumb dragons are the best. Hands down
Dragons will bite
🤙Bsmith
did you say 'fake bone swiss' ? they're fake? 4:49
Hates Powell so buys counterfeit instead.
Fail.
You are wrong about the spacers. But everyone can’t be a mechanical engineer
Engineer might be technically right but I’ve been skating for over 20 years, confident I’ve found them slowing me down.
@@ZackDowdyspacers don't slow you down lol it just makes bearings last longer.
@@jimmyhuang8730 They slowed me down though? The spacer had threads shaved out
What's a derameter?
Durometer- the hardness of the urethane. Lower number is softer, more traction, more ability to roll over crust.
Higher numbers, harder , slide easier, .
The audio on the curb spot sounds terrible for the skating but decent when you’re talking. Just a technical observation. 🤷🏻♂️
its a great video and good tricks i new in your channel hiii
Dude. Go try the dragons. Free yourself from the cool.
He won't he hates Powell Peralta
👍for the wisdom of freedom
-That's the quest for shore!! -Stay free-never cool-@@wenmoonson
how tf does youtube post your shit with a fucking line thru it?
Can you tell if the Swiss are knock offs based off the packaging? I'm always worried about getting fake stuff lately.
Buy from your local skateshop. They usually order directly from the company
No, even the bearing has the exact branding. Hard to tell. Buying from local shop is always the best option.
Fake Swiss not from an AD.
Dragons absolutely blow these sapphire spits away. It's not even close. Dragons are better than the new Andrew Reynolds 93a spitfire wheels, yeah I said it. I skateboard more, solely because🐉 make everything smooth and definitely slide like 99a
Wait youre pushing temu rn?! Are u crazy?!
Fake bone swiss? Why hope you just doing it for science.
Why are you supporting Temu?
Wrist guards.
Spitfire 97a durometer are the best (original dragon type wheel that came out earlier) and they come in Classic, Conical full, and Radial full.
Not as soft and slides less.
@@jimmyhuang8730 The 97a Spitfire are not as soft, but they slide WAY more. They slide like a perfectly normal 99a Spitfire F4 wheel.
Due-ROM-eter
😅💯
Lol dude they suck, I saw you eat dust across the video, I saw braille crew also being disappointed on them, and I sat them gathering dust at the vans store, just get dragons or X formula, or just any random 80a if looking for absolute softness
They fkn sucked bruh my wheel broke it 2 peirces, the inside that say the 56 mm and then the actual clear out shell of the wheel became two pieces during a game of skate ts blows
🛹🛹🛹
Like your striped pants!
Thanks dude stoked I found them, old dickies.
If you're considering getting these wheels, DON'T...
These Sapphires are mediocre at everything except sliding, which they are just bad at. The only thing these wheels do well is look good. Dragons or Super Juice minis are a much better wheel choice than these IMO.
