Just gonna pin some thoughts on House of Mouse since I keep seeing comments about it:
As much as I do find House of Mouse charming, I couldn’t get into how little actual original content there was since it was really a big vehicle for MouseWorks cartoons (which are pretty meh imo), so I didn’t think it held much weight for this particular project (though I agree that Minnie and Daisy are pretty good there).
And ultimately, the appeal of the original sections of House of Mouse really wasn’t the Mickey Mouse stuff, it was all the other Disney stuff. I’d much rather credit more defined and dedicated Mickey Mouse projects as the best versions.
Also love people commenting assuming I haven’t seen it even though I used a clip of it for the Ludwig von Drake section lol.

I always did love David Tennant’s take on Scrooge, where his tone and demeanor still sounds like that of an old man, but his actual voice gives off a youthful vigor fitting for an adventurer with more than a century’s worth of practice who has no intention of slowing down

    • @DaNintendude

I was thinking a lot about Peach while he was talking about Minnie.
But even with the similarities, Peach has had numerous games over the years where she actually has more of a character.
She's a kind-hearted, bubbly girl, but she's also confident, determined, and has magic powers.
She's still very much a stereotypical girl character in a lot of ways, but that's fine. She's had loads of cool moments in the RPG series, and even in mainline games on occasion, with her 3D Land postcards showing her attempting to escape Bowser. I'd love to see a game where she tears down Bowser's forces from the inside.
And of course, there's also the upcoming Princess Peach: Showtime, which is letting her get some more time to herself to shine.
The movie didn't really know what to do with her, and ended up changing her personality entirely, which was quite a shame, honestly. The fact that they opted to reinvent her character instead of working with what she is in the games is dumb.
When it comes to Amy, I'm not sure what to even think about her anymore. Obviously it's not a good idea to keep her Sonic obsession around, but it feels like they haven't really found a way for her to stand out without it. Hope they find a way for her to stand out soon though, because it's clear that the series is better when she's around.

    • @gracileferrante4313
      @gracileferrante4313 6 місяців тому +36

personally, I think the best route to take her character at this point is to keep her a massive simp when she's around Sonic, but then also give her more screen time with other characters where she can be herself, best of both worlds. Sadly Sega will never do this since they're insistent on making sonic/amy work as a hypothetical couple, which is really the big thing keeping her in the all too common trope of "the girl character"@@DaNintendude

There's another side to Mickey's character that, IMO, isn't discussed nearly enough. He's Walt Disney's cartoon son. In projects like "Epic Mickey," the Paul Rudish shorts, or even "Once Upon a Studio," we can see that Mickey has grieved Walt's death, and tries to follow in his footsteps. He's also faced the expectations of living up to Walt's legacy, and still being a leader, hero, and entertainer for everyone. Mickey's not just happy all the time; he's learned to accept happiness while accepting, and overcoming, tremendous hardship. It makes you appreciate him more in that regard.

    • @theluigifan1
      @theluigifan1 2 місяці тому +5

Yeah, especially because even before that scene, you got snippets of the way Pete raised PJ. From the way PJ is initially being very apprehensive about Max’s plan to impress Roxanne with his dad’s camera being involved, to him being scared of being crushed like a bug due to getting detention and the way Pete basically controls PJ and messes with his emotions during the camping scene.
It’s that kind of subtle storytelling that really elevates A Goofy Movie from being a fun side movie to being one of their best character writing-wise.

  • @dinam3236
    @dinam3236 7 місяців тому +106

Just going to say, you're REALLY missing out on some great incarnations of these characters by totally ignoring the comics. The classic Disney chars have appeared in comics since the old days... started with the Mickey Mouse newspaper comic strip, and the spin-off Donald Duck comic strip, both of which later spun off to proper comic book stories.
The entire Ducktales show is based on the old Donald Duck comics written and drawn by Carl Barks, who invented and introduced Scrooge McDuck (in 1947, 20 years before he showed up in animation and 40 years before the first Ducktales, which was essentially a watered-down and kiddified adaptation of Barks's comics) and pretty much all the supporting cast.
The 2017 Ducktales is a revival that takes more from later comics, especially THE BEST DISNEY COMIC EVER, "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck," the story of Scrooge's life from a poor shoeshine boy in Glasgow to multi-trillionaire in Duckburg. Apparently this comic was mandatory reading for everyone that worked on the show, and though they take a lot of liberties with it (in the show Scrooge's parents are alive, but in the comic a big turning point is their deaths), you can really see how it shaped how they wrote and thought of Scrooge as a character.
The Mickey Mouse comics are where characters like Clarabelle, Horace, and Morty and Ferdie really shine. Horace especially in the early Mickey Mouse comic is just a really fun character. There's also some pretty good comics with Minnie and Clarabelle... the comics tended to keep Donald and his family a little separated from Mickey and the crew (they really only meet up on special occasions) so Minnie never really hung out with Daisy. Instead we got quite a few stories with Minnie and Clarabelle as friends and partners as they tried their hand on things like entering a talent show together, or opening a restaurant together... In these story you got Minnie as the sometimes exasperated but usually supportive "straight woman" to Clarabelle's antics, which really worked.
Just... it's kind of sad that Americans don't even know about the Disney comics. The Disney characters are American, after all... but as comic stars Americans don't even know them. And here in Europe we LOVE Disney comics, which are still being made and printed to this very day.

Unfortunately, as much as I’ve tried in the past, I’ve never really been able to get into comics of any kind. It’s just not my thing. I’m really glad certain characters, especially Minnie, seem to get a lot more love there. Ultimately, the video is just my opinion and is limited by what I’ve been exposed to. Really, it's because of Morty and Ferdie that Huey, Dewey and Louie even exist... Morty and Ferdie were pretty big presences in the Mickey Mouse newspaper comic, and when Donald got his own spinoff, in the early years he shared a supporting cast with Mickey. Morty and Ferdie showed up quite often to prank and torment him. After a while, though, it was decided to just give Donald his own nephews instead of having him rely on Mickey's... and as a way of one-upping Mickey, Donald got THREE bratty identical nephews instead of just two.

Mickey Mouse in the comics is basically like Tintin, an adventurer who takes on all sorts of criminals, his main arch nemesis in the comics isn't Pete but a character called the Phantom Blot who is a creation of the original Mickey Mouse comic strips from the 30s but doesn't get used much in animated projects and most of time as in the Ducktales reboot, not as an antagonist for Mickey.
If you like the DT reboot version of Donald Duck then you will love the old Scrooge McDuck comics where he along with the nephews goes along with Scrooge on his adventures, the Italian comics REALLY love Donald Duck (and the rest of the Duck characters), going as far to give an extremely popular superhero identity called Paperinik (Duck Avenger) that had several series over the years as well as a secret agent in the series Double Duck.
Trivia time, Donald's therapist in the reboot episode is actually a character from the comics who's Donald's neighbor, whom he has a bitter rivalry with.
Goofy in the comics isn't all that different but he did have a long running series where he became a superhero called Super Goof went he eats super powered peanuts. The House of Mouse even had an episode dedicated to that concept. Though in Goofy's case, my favorite version is the Goof Troop/Goofy Movie version.

If comics also count for best versions, the absolute best version of Scrooge is Don Rosa's interpretation of the old Carl Barks comics. Life And Times of Scrooge McDuck might well be my favorite comic book of all time.
As for Donald's anger issues, I like to credit it due to the fact he is a WW2 veteran. This also ties in with the old Ducktales where he literally leaves the nephews with Scrooge, being enlisted in the navy. In older (WW2) cartoons he also fights in various roles. Even real life is canon with this as Donald has been officially honorably discharged in 1984 as Sergeant. So, basically, Donald deals with PTSD while taking care of his sister's kids

I think for Mickey, and especially Minnie, the early 2000's Mickey Mouse Works/House of Mouse era shouldn't be overlooked. They still had a bit of that edge to them, while still recognizably the same friendly characters. This actually goes for the whole cast imo. The House of Mouse specials, Mouse Works in general, and Runaway Brain are all great to this day. And of course, animation aside, the long, long history of the characters in comics. Similar to mascots like Mario and Sonic having some pretty extensive and deep lore in comics, there's a lot that most people may never see, stuff that really puts each and every character out there for some of their best stories in their respective franchise histories.

I'd say one of Mickey's best roles is in the short "Runaway Brain." He's depicted as a more mischievous everyman thrown into a bizarre horrific situation (sort of reminiscent of "The Mad Doctor"), and he's got a sort of scrappiness to him while also being relatable.
He's also a gamer in that one, so make of that what you will.

As an extraordinaire on all things Epic Mickey, Mickey Mouse, Sensational Six, and Duckverse, I was astonished that Epic Mickey Mickey didn't win best version of his character. I'd argue it's the most "real" his character has ever been, and that's not just due to the meta nature of Epic Mickey as a whole but due to the arc he goes through in that game and how he comes to grips with the responsibility for his actions and the relationship he has to build with his brother he never knew, while traversing the ravaged ending point for all his co-stars abandoned in the past.
    Also, no Ortensia appearance?
Other than that, _beautiful_ video. It was very in-depth, very well-research, and you really pulled out all the stops in your character selection. From the smallest chipmunk to the grandest wizard, you really covered them all. I guess it was a bit sad that Della didn't get a mention, but then again, that best version goes without saying.

Horse Horsecollar, Mortimer Mouse and Ludwig von Drake definitely got a lot of their big moments in House of Mouse. I love the running gag of Mickey asking Horace what's wrong and Horace answers literally what's going on in the world before Mickey clarifies "No, what's wrong in here!" and Horace gives him the straight answer.
Mortimer Mouse from his first appearance in the short Mickey's Rival, was a regular antagonist in House of Mouse and he's very funny as the cocky, sly chiseler always trying to make a move on Minnie and taunt Mickey. Whenever he's just being a jerk and still getting his comeuppance, I always thought he was a lot of fun.
And while Ludwig von Drake's role in Fun and Fancy Free would be my second best, House of Mouse introduced me to Ludwig as the funny inventor who's gadgets always went haywire and also much love for his his big song number about where every Disney guest in the House of House sits.

Having Max would help further Goofy’s fatherly personality and could lead to a lot of stories for kids to relate to, since the other characters are adults, seemingly. I think Oswald in this day and age is more known as the living embodiment of ‘cartoon’, since in his latest short he does things like turn his ears into a pair of scissors. Including him more often could be great for inducing some fun hijinks for the rest of the cast to bounce off of.

Phantom Blot first appeared in animation in 1987, so a little past my general deadline of the 60s. Same with PJ (Max made it in on the technicality of a 50s Goofy short featuring a “version of Max”). I'm not surprised this wasn't covered given how damn obscure it is, but there is one other version of Mickey that I think is at least worth mentioning: the italian comics. Started out in the 50s fairly faithful to his usual self, but his quick thinking and can do attitude have been completely recontextualized in modern times, turning him into an ace detective who is otherwise ironically too emotionally tangled up in his job. This kind of extends to Minnie too. Still exists as Mickey's girlfriend, though one who's way more emotionally mature than he is, and one that he sorely needs. If we're talking character dynamics, this perfect foil version of Mickey and Minnie is definitely my favorite. And if we want to talk about daring, boy, there's Mickey Mouse Mystery Magazine, the 90s (again) Italian comic where Mickey goes noir and packs heat, seems to have been canned way too soon, not sure why...
It's something I would recommend if it was more readily available. The best shot is the IDW comics, all direct translation of the Italian joints.
And... one more thing about House of Mouse I think is worth mentioning... the Mickey MouseWorks shorts still count. And that Mickey is funny as hell to me because they tried making a thing the fact that he... really loves cheese. It was a character trait of his only this one time, in the 90s, in these silly ass cartoons from a post Roger Rabbit world. Seems like a byproduct of trying to make him a thing, not as much as Bugs Bunny is for WB, but in about the same way. Between this and Mystery Magazine (and even Runaway Brain, how could I forget), god damn were the 90s a wild time for Mickey.

In the Australian cartoon, all she says is "that's nice, hon" over and over again, but it was done whimsically (I think so)! The overprotection the company has on him has robbed us from of a lot of potential stories that could be told with his modern design, especially in regards to what the 2017 DuckTales team wanted to do with him before the show ended. I think Minnie's best versions are Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and The House of Mouse. I honestly would argue that everyone's best version is their version in The House of Mouse. I mean, it not only was such a great crossover show and SUPER iconic... But Disney nailed the characteristics of each character so well in a comedic manner. I especially love that one episode when it was all about The Three Caballeros, and everyone was obsessed over the group EXCEPT forgot Donald was apart of it. Donald's struggle in that show, being misunderstood and quick to rage was absolutely the perfect illustration of his character for me. And when Mickey tried his best to bring everyone together and to be optimistic, but also showing how much he loved being the spotlight; that worked, too. He was so busy focusing on keeping the show going that he forgot about his friends, even though he loves and cares for them. And Goofy was exceptionally good as the waiter- Max was GREAT- Daisy was on-spot... It all was perfect in my opinion. (I also gotta mention Ludwig Von Drake- in the Christmas House of Mouse episodes- Okay the part with him and his version from another time was my favorite version of him- and when he was in The Nutcracker.)

I can definitely see why you went with Paul Rudish Mickey, with that Mickey being the most he's ever done in so long, embodying what Mickey's all about whilst deconstructing his character. In my opinion, though, I have to give it to Runaway Brain for actually doing something experimental with Mickey, whilst still maintaining what makes Mickey, well, Mickey. In addition to the Freaky Friday scenario with Julius that would have made for the most out of character, yet still entertaining as hell version of Mickey if it was just Mickey, we get a Mickey who feels a lot more down to earth by comparison to his more magical counterparts. He's not just a trickster or a callously positive guy; the mouse is down on his luck and is losing himself, from getting addicted to video games to the point of distracting himself from having a living, to quite literally losing himself from the body swapping.
As for Mortimer, I feel that, as much as he was a trickster ladies' man in his debut, he was also a clear coward, as he also is in his appearances in stuff like House of Mouse. Contrast this with my pick for him, Paul Rudish Mortimer, where he hasn't any cowardice. This is the absolute steal your girl, merciless trickster who dedicated his life to making Mickey Mouse's life absolute Hell to the point where it even made Pete jealous.
But hey, this is all my preferences.

Don Rosa's Scrooge is my favorite Scrooge, but DT17's Donald is my favorite Donald. My favorite Panchito and Jose are Lot3C's interpretation (I also really like Jaime Camil's voice for Panchito). Though their original appearances are wonderful as well.
DT17 is the ONLY healthy relationship between Daisy and Donald, and it is gorgeous!
The Goofy shorts reveal that Goofy's real name is George, and I don't think that's ever been retconned or debunked. And I accept it because I like the idea of Goofy having a normal first name and just going by a nickname derived from his last name because it suits him so well. And yeah, A Goofy Movie was his best appearance.

I *almost* disagree with you on Pete, but I love "The Three Musketeers" so it wins. I almost said him in "A Goofy Movie" was at his best, especially the hot tub scene. Just the way he says "My son respects me..." is just so chilling. That whole scene is a masterclass in fantastic voice acting.

personally I think both Mickey and Minnie's best appearances are in the most recent short "Once Upon A Studio"
I know they don't appear much, but their relationship feels very clear. They are a couple in love, very likely married, but also the leaders of the studio
Mickey feels polite and positive, and he also acts like a natural leader that somehow managed to be friends with everybody
And Minnie also shows this leader side, a bit stricter than Mickey's but still elegant, perfectly portrayed through her line "Let's move it, gentlemen!" when coming in the men's changing room while keeping her eyes covered

I really, REALLY do. Disney has been giving so much love to Ducktales, Chip and Dale, reboots, revivals, etc., but none whatsoever to Max. It's unfair how they've just been randomly excommunicated from the brand.
To a degree, I understand. Max is a story heavy character, which I truly appreciate. I would love for another Goofy Movie or, even better, a Goofy Movie series that takes place between the two movies. Just anything good, really.

I asked my bf what his favorite Mickey iteration is, and he immediately replied with the short Runaway Brain, where Mickey is kind of an irresponsible manchild that puts off obligations to play video games. It's a pretty out-there characterizarion for him, but I weirdly think it works!

Anyone can say all they want with 2017 Donald, and while yes i do agree thats the best of the character so far, to me personally however, his pair up classic cartoon shorts with chip n dale and spike the bee are the best in my book and is the reason why i love the character or cartoons as a whole in the first place. Also, i love quack pack, sure its not perfect but it is what it is, a mid 90s show with just a 90s take on the duck family. To me an underrated and overhated series.

Great video! just a small correction. José Carioca’s name is pronounced “Joe-sé” not “Ho-sé”, it is a portuguese name, not a spanish one, that is also why he is credited as “Joe carioca” in the movies. The last time Disney pronounced correctly was in the short Two Happy amigos from 1960, it was also the last time he was voiced by his original voice actor, José Oliveira.
I think that the best and most important animated version of José Carioca was the one that was canceled. Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros was supposed to be a trilogy. The third movie, Cuban Carnival, was scrapped but one segment was already in production and was added to Melody Time as “blame to the samba”. The first half of the movie would be in Brazil where we would meet Maria Vaz, José’s girlfriend (a bird version of Yaya from The three Caballeros voiced by the same actress) and later they would go to Cuba and meet a new character in a similar way to Three Caballeros but I don’t think Panchito was going to be in the movie.
Although the movie was canceled, a short series of comic books about José and Maria Vaz (now renamed to Rosinha Vaz) was published in Europe, and after being released in Brazil, it was a huge success and became a comic series that only ended in 2018 on issue 2446*!
(*Donald and José comics shared the same issue number until 1985 so not all comics were about José).
The comic version of José is the most iconic version in Brazil and the one people remember the most and his personality is very different from the movies. Comic José is a poor, lazy man that does anything for money that doesn’t involve getting a job, he is very similar to the ducktales version of Louie Duck where both tries to get money with creative schemes. In the comics Rosinha is a rich woman and daughter of a bank owner called Rocha Vaz that hates José. Rosinha knows very well the type of man José is and although he (usually) doesn’t ask his girlfriend for money the social difference between them makes for some great stories.
It’s a shame that this version of the character was never animated, ever since José Oliveira passed away in the 80s he became “Panchito 2”. Nothing shows this more by the fact that they made a series where José is one of the main characters but they didn’t look at how to pronounce his name.

Someone else already pointed this out to me, but thx for letting me know! Sorry for the mispronunciation, I'm Hispanic myself and didn't think twice about the fact that he's Brazilian and thus would be pronounced differently. Really hope Disney gets on their game about properly representing this character through something as basic as his proper pronunciation.

Excluding the comics pretty much massively limits your potential picks. When it comes to the animated stuff there is only a very small hanful of them that actually explores the characters in any kind of meaningful way so it's not even a real contest for like 90% of the characters.

But growing up on the Donald Duck comics (that's what the Dutch version of the Mickey Mouse comics were called)... man Ducktales Gyro Gearloose was such a breath of fresh air, he actually gets to have a personality besides being smart, and while his inventions going haywire was even present in those comics it happened much more in the cartoon which gave him much much more of a character

He’s still prone to anger, but not as aggressive as before. I like the mix of both, where he’s mostly sweet and kind, and when he does get angry, it isn’t as intense.
