    Eden the Doll, and many of her ilk were indeed one of the few more prominent transgender women on the platform and I do think that deserves to be celebrated. I also definitely understand that when you edit something down, context is going to get lost. That said, I'm still fascinated by her position, especially considering her brush with transphobic violence.
    It's very true that people will be more accepting of a trans woman who has medically transitioned. It's very true that someone who does is going to be more accepted in women's spaces. As a trans woman who's been stealth, whose been on hormones for nearly 2 decades, I definitely agree that this is a truth. I would, however, question the way that we frame that truth. There's a lot of talk about "earning your place" and a description of trans women who don't pass as not working hard enough. Juxtapose that against her describing several times she received free surgeries and her both past and present engagement with sex work and it kinda starts to paint a certain picture. Very few trans women are able to "pass" without surgical intervention and that surgical intervention is incredibly expensive and time consuming. It can talk someone years and years before they reach that point and this is all..what they have to do before using the restroom?
    I understand a lot of her mentality because it comes from the tail end of the standards of care that were normalized for many of our trans ancestors. We must pass, we must have surgical intervention. We must date men and we must embody a very specific image of femininity. Everything else is questioned and challenged. And when you compare that particular struggle to the struggle of women generally; who've worked incredibly hard to liberate themselves from the narrow images some trans women seem to embrace, it starts to feel a bit dissonant.
    In short, transgender people should not be in a situation where their right to use the public restroom is so mercilessly challenged that the only way they can do what everyone else does, is to sell their bodies so they can afford the high cost of medically transitioning into a place where they are only conditionally embraced. It didn't matter how hard Eden or her friends had worked to transition when they were attacked. And just the same, people gathered around them and misgendered them. And the same people who did that are the same people who would join her in negatively describing transgender people who don't pass.
    There's a very extreme minority of people who embrace the stance of some transgender people are repulsive, but the ones who've worked hard enough to pass are ok. Yes, passing makes people more comfortable around you and in a cissexist society, if you identify as a woman and have more traditionally feminine secondary sex characteristics, you will be more embraced as a woman by people in passing, who aren't deeply invested in you. All of this is true. But my question for those who feel like that is gospel is should they have to and is the burden of passing and medical transition really more important that common decency; or at base, empathy? Some transgender people will never pass no matter how much surgery they have, no matter how long they've been on hormones. Should those people live a life where they cannot use the public restroom because they don't neatly fit into one box or the other? I personally feel they shouldn't; and passing shouldn't be so greatly important to transgender people's access to rights that they have to exploit themselves to get there. I'm happy there are more options for trans folks these days.
    Enjoy how you set the stage for these interviews!

      I imagine a good portion of women feel similarly to me. I don’t need a trans woman to “pass” for me to feel comfortable. I need a trans woman to pass as _trying_ to pass to feel comfortable.
      However, I do think that as more and more disingenuous, sometimes predatory men take advantage of the bathroom situation, women’s’ tolerance will start to dwindle, which is an absolute shame.

      cis black women get attacked by men all the time. it really does not matter if you pass or not in that regard.. Eden was talking about entering cis women spaces. She was like you just can't have a beard and have your d out in women's restrooms. That's just the reality. I would say having gender neutral spaces is probably the best compromise for people who are non binary or in the beginning of their transition journey and uncomfortable using the assigned genders restroom etc.

      And she wouldn’t be addressed as he/him cuz she doesn’t look like a a he/him, most people who didn’t know she was trans prolly wouldn’t be able to tell she is trans (ik i sure couldn’t) the only reason someone would call her “he/him” is to try and be disrespectful or rude on purpose towards her, not bc she actually looks like a “he/him” (something ur trying to do rn)

On the other hand, it’s great that today’s youth is trying to go against all the gender stereotypes. In order to respect women, be aware and sensitive to how male bodies are rightfully viewed as a threat toward women. All of my trans women friends completely feel the same, and are pretty turned off and downright annoyed by the "theys" out there who act, look, and enjoy the privileges of their assigned at birth sex, while being the loudest voices in the room. When push comes to shove, they'd drop their "theyness" while a woman like Eden cannot drop her altered gender identity. People apply pronouns to themselves like they're fashion accessories all the while never understanding the long and tenuous journeys actual trans people go through to just live their everyday lives. Being passable isnt always the slay you think it is (and we saw from this video that it doesnt always prevent you from facing harm either). most times passing only reaffirms gender hierarchies consequently resulting in binaries of good and bad queer gender expression where soft and cvnt are on one end and clockiness is on the other. Regurgitating and remodeling the gender structures cis ppl follow will not save us it only creates trans binary gender police. and i dont see why yall wanna be cops so bad. And given that in order to transition you need a considerable amount of access and capital, there are class and racial implications as to who gets to access the benefits of passability. He was messing with this other transwoman and got “caught” then goes on to a radio show with the transwomen's friend who was one of the hosts at the time (he didn't know she knew his tea) and lies straight to all three of their faces about the entire thing. Allegedly he paid the transwoman some money to be quiet.
    Later on, he released a song with the line “We don't mess with those Batty boy antics.” For the ones that don't know Batty is a homophobic slur used in the Caribbean.
    The only reason he even started the only fans thing is to prove to his counterpart that he isn't a part of LGBTQ... The funny thing is they know he's lying.

  • @Cordial_Lump
    @Cordial_Lump Рік тому +2

    Eden brings up a great nuanced point that... there is a spectrum of transness for the current society we live in. Some people pass more than others (& some people don't want to pass as either), but people who don't pass make cis-people feel unsafe. Everything is gendered. It's inescapable. Like a '2' in a binary code, not fitting in makes you a target. It is difficult to live in the middle. You may be seen as deviant, unnatural, aggressive.... but if you want to be viewed as the other gender, conforming to it's stereotypes does help other people interact with you as that gender. Following the rules, getting the body, training your voice... transitioning as much as possible to the other gender!
    The only thing is: her transmedicalist ideology shits on people who have just come out as trans, are in the process of transitioning, trans people who have done a lot of work to transition and still don't pass, and people who are just exploring their gender. It demonizes them as trenders, and it's ultimately very harmful. If her goal is trans liberation she's shooting herself in the foot. So it's not a great solution... but the nonbinary dream of having a gender-less society is also impossible. We need a happy medium between these two extreme views in order to move foreword together.

    I think that if you are actively transitioning and you feel safer in a certain change/rest room then go for it. I used to go to a ton of raves and festivals and there were a ton of people who were in the various stages of hormone therapy or dressing as a woman and no one felt uncomfortable but no one was like showing their genitals or getting angry and truly the people in the restrooms that were trans were trying to assimilate themselves as women. Like sis just had to pee, and they were putting a lot of effort into blending in, they did not want to be uncomfortable and they do not want you to be uncomfortable.

    Not all woman of the trans experience are post op, some believe in keeping their assigned genitalia at birth. I agree that those particular trans woman does have to be cognizant of how they change in front of woman who are post op and those who are considered biological. However, non-binary is a spectrum. It’s more of femininity and masculine traits that defines that for people. Also intersex is a factor as well, I have a hormone imbalance, meaning I have more XX chromosomes making me more feminine and look like male. We have to be careful of the language. I agree if you are trans you have to appear that way. I also agree that they/them individuals have to be ok that others may not use the correct pronouns because we are visual beings.
