when we decided on the story and mood for this level, rejecting reality and clinging to the gold old days, my immediate association was mid-century pop music and the vapourwave movement. though eventually i decided to use guitars for the 4 cue and to flesh out the track, so it took a lean into jazz fusion.
by the way, i'm very proud of this bassline! finally used a tritone substitution in a way that sounds right to me for once. i also noticed that drum fills by themselves were lacking in energy for the transitions during the glitch nightmare, but adding some fast bass runs brought the whole thing together. it was incredibly gratifying, and makes me want to learn how to play bass. one day i want to write a bassline as good as Unison Square Garden's Sugar Song and Bitter Step.

I said it before, I'll say it again. This theme can only be described as "hauntingly beautiful". The way it starts off at peace, and the melancholy sets in, turning into sheer despair by part 2, is simply marvelous.

Been loving Chapter 5 so far, the jazzyness of this track was unexpected, but definitely welcome.
Also whoever designed the boss for act 5 is 100% a masochist.

act 5 really felt like act 2 v2
act 2 was already my favorite, so act 5 immediately became my new favorite
I agree that act 2 was amazing. I think tachycardia is just a more fun gameplay mechanic than the 7 beat, but the simplicity makes iterating on the design difficult. I think ice and fire beats were both perfect additions, though burn beats feel awkward with how they extend the time until the next note with no good indication. Freeze beats do shorten the time before the next note, but that interaction feels a lot more intuitive.

@@funniguy420 No, I didn't. Burn beats do extend the time until the next beat, after the burn beat. The burn beat comes earlier, the beat after that has a longer wait period than would be normal.
For example, normal beat timing could be displayed as
. | . | . | . |
where . represents the first beat, and the | represents when you hit.
Burn beat timing could be displayed like
. | . | i . |
The i represents the burn beat hit. That one beat comes earlier, but the next beat has a strangely long wait period.
Freeze beats could be displayed like
. | . j | . |
The j represents the freeze beat hit. The freeze beat comes later, but the next beat after it comes much sooner than after most hits.
@@godlyvex5543 the way freeze/burn beats work is that they don't have a delay before the next beat. freeze beats wait for the hit but keep the overall rhythm
so you hit the note that cues in the freeze beat, then you get the "beat, FREEZE hit" and then the next beat comes as if there was no freeze (beat, FREEZE hit beat, hit)
burn beats work exactly the same.
you hit the note that cues in the burn beat, then you get the "beat HIT" and the next one comes as if there was no burn (beat HIT. beat, hit) it's not extending the time until the next note, its just waiting for the beat, and because you hit one early it has to wait the half a beat for where you would normally hit it, and then wait for the 1st beat, then you hit again.
i never had trouble with the burn beats, but the shorter wait with the freeze beats always threw me off
I found burn easier to nail down than freeze xP
this entire act really stuck with the feeling the rest of the game gave me, this sort of emptiness but willingness, even a NEED to strive onwards in the face of everything. sure Lucky started out misguided but the warmth of the staff and his other patients really helped him realise where to go. I am HUNGRY for whatever you guys make next after a well deserved break

Act 5 boss is so damn hype with that last-minute new mechanic.
But hot damn 5-2N is defo harder to perfect.
Honorable mention to 4-4N being easier than 4-4 cuz it's faster and thus easier to follow.

I suppose everything is jazz fusion these days, or maybe just everything that I listen to ends up being jazz fusion somehow. celesti you did a banger job on this track, and the sax playing is amazing. I aim to elevate my musicianship and composer-ship to y’all’s levels!

@ryuko8937like he said, everything is jazz fusion these days. It's like the future of music. Kinda along with my argument being the better you get at playing your instrument, the more likely you'd turn into a jazz player

I did not expect some jazzyness in this new update and I love it!
Excellent start to Act 5! I especially loved the scoreboard in the background (counting your hits, and also counting strikes/outs for late or early beats and balls for missed beats)
This and unsustainable inconsolable are my favorite levels of this update. With this level, I particularly loved the twist of the 4-beat.
I came in with low-ish expectations, honestly, as I've always hated sports and most music related to it, so I'm glad the music was actually very different from any music you'd usually associate with sports. The whole first half of this song, I was like "yeah, this is better than I thought, but it's still a bit boring." then when the second half arrived I was having a blast, it shattered my expectations.
With unsustainable inconsolable, I really loved the pacing of the first half. It throws you in, and tells you to swim, but with the short breaks between stages, you get a moment to collect yourself, so you never feel truly hopeless.
the music did not need to go this hard for the first level of the act, but im so glad it did because this is incredible
In the process of S+ing Act 5 now. I can't wait for the rest of this soundtrack to drop because there is PHENOMENAL work across the board.

i love how 7th beat games always manages to keep that rhythm doctor feel to every new level added, none feel out of place or clunky.

Probably takes the cake for my fav ost/stage in the game. It's jazzy, it's emotional, I can feel the desperation, the longing, paired with the fun gameplay and the "wake up" section which gave me CHILLS, I can't stop listening to it
Act 5 is really the most impressive in terms of gameplay, visuals and general design! Great job on making it how good it is!

I have some theories about what might happen next... maybe Dr. Edega has some sinister plans for the future of Rhythm Doctor, perhaps this might result in a mutated strain of Connectifia abortus that turns people into zombies or something, and the patients getting athletic training from Lucky will help them fight back... maybe that's kind of out there, but I wouldn't be surprised if the final act was more action-packed.

we created a new event to resize the window, but it's currently only available to developers because it's has some rules we have to follow so it doesn't break. We are still looking if we can polish the event enough to release it for everyone 🙏
