work on this track started over 3 years ago! back then we thought this level would focus on cole, so that’s why it’s a remix of 2-1. sorry leitmotif fans, it’s been demoted to an un-leit motif now
i wanted to emphasise the constant timefeel changes through instrumentation, so the song uses a different percussion kit for each three: 808 snares for straight quarter notes, tambourines and claps for triplets, and another new snare for the final section in quintuplet swing.
but this function-over-form approach felt stiff and too “video game-y”. not to mention how it made the two halves feel like two separate songs shunted together. in the end i remedied this by dropping in some saxophone chops from Lucky Break to draw away attention.
fun fact: the dropouts at 2:03 and effects automation at 2:24 were a last minute addition! giacomo felt the 2nd half felt too static compared to the 1st half’s constantly switching up, and i agreed. the song changes lead to fun opportunites to add vfx too.

I would like to just take this time to appreciate the reharm of the "Lo-Fi Beats To Treat Patients To" piano solo at 1:36. The first time I heard it I couldn't even focus on keeping Lucky alive. Incredible work on this soundtrack as usual!

When I read that dialogue, "I hope intern is good at counting in fives...", I smiled! I love when rhythm games add this quite more-difficult-to-undertstand rhythms, and quintuplet swing is such a perfect choice for this, haha. And it sounds so good too! Although it's not my favorite song from the update, and in the general (I like it, but not that much as other bangers), but the rhythmic concept is awesome here ^^

This might be my favourite track out the act. Something about the 2-1 motif mixing in with quint timing and a great saxophone is simply heavenly

Gotta say the "distraction melody" is significantly more effective here than it was in 2-1
Or maybe I've just gotten used to 2-1
In 2-1 you only need to keep time, in this you need to keep track of the freeze beats as well, so your brain wants to latch onto another anchor point for reference and it picks the piano.

Freeze beats are too powerful, I get the chills every time I listen to this song (and I love it)

I haven't count to five a single time on this level
they changed the song from a triplet swing to a quintuplet swing
It has to du with rhythmic subdivisions of the beats. Some of the level is in straight 8th notes, some of it is in triplits, and the final section is in quintuplits, which means fitting 5 notes into the range of 2 just like how triplits are fitting 3 notes into the normal time range of 2. So you're still hitting every other quarter note of the beat, it just so happens that each standard space for 2 8th notes has 5 things fit into it instead of more comonly 3 or just straight eigth notes/ 2 notes per quarter note.
It's kinda hard to detect, for an untrained ear, but as acerbt explained, it's a quintuplet swing. I think the best part to hear it is at 2:13 , those notes could be really "unsettling" for someone, or just weird. And if someone has problem with hitting notes right at this part (me sometimes, for example, haha), it's probably because of this rhythm, so called, quintuplet swing. Hope this explains it a little more :)
If you interested, you can search something with it on youtube, typing "quintuplet swing". But if you won't understand it rhythmically, or think it's really hard to feel, don't worry. It's because it is hard, haha

I agree. I thought that counting in 7/16 for the act 4 boss was dificult but this really makes you think more than that.
try not counting but just waiting for when it feels right to press the key
@@canalso5806 that’s how I do it. It makes no sense to count in 5 to me. In fact it just feels more confusing.
@@thespeedyyoshi i don't even know why the game thinks that we would/should count beats for oneshots.
@@canalso5806 It's not saying to count beats, it's suttly introducing quintuplit swing which means fitting 5 evenly spaced divisions where you would usually have 2. So if you apply that thought process to the section it's having you do oneshots with each beat split in 8th note quintuplits, instead of standard 8th notes or 8th note triplits.
