Witnesses of the Book of Mormon Gold Plates | Now You Know

  • The gold plates contained the teachings of prophets in ancient America. The teachings were etched on gold plates in an ancient reformed Egyptian language and later translated by Joseph Smith into English as the Book of Mormon. In addition to Joseph Smith, 11 others saw the gold plates.
    In 1823, the angel Moroni visited Joseph Smith and told him about a sacred record on gold plates that was buried in a hill by Joseph’s home. The gold plates were 8 inches long, about 6 or 7 inches wide, and 4 inches thick. Individual plates were as thin as parchment paper, and the plates weighed about 40-60 pounds. Joseph was directed to protect the plates, and for a long time no one else could see them.
    In His time, God gave permission for 11 others to see and handle the gold plates, and their testimonies are recorded in the beginning pages of the Book of Mormon as “The Testimony of Three Witnesses” and “The Testimony of Eight Witnesses.” This process fulfilled the law of witnesses Paul described in the New Testament: “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (2 Corinthians 13:1). No one has to rely only on Joseph Smith’s testimony to know the gold plates were real.
    The last chapter of the Book of Mormon contains a promise that anyone who sincerely seeks to know if the Book of Mormon is true can receive a witness from the Holy Ghost. (See Moroni 10:3-5.)

      @@dannyfentonphantom2 When I first looked at the "CES LEtter", it gave the appearance of being well-researched and well-organized, but it is actually rife with inaccuracy and does nothing to build anyone's faith; rather, it only sows confusion and doubt. It has given nothing to people, and only taken away. You have confused Joshua Howard's experience with confirmation bias, but there's a huge difference between confirmation bias and a witness from God through the Holy Ghost. Those of us who know both can tell the difference.

But I see Joseph’s testimony as the declaration of truth and then my own testimony became the 12th witness in my own life. The Gospel is for everyone but the more I learn, the more it is clear that it is also intimately personal to each individual.

    As I learn more about Joseph Smith, but more importantly The Book Of Mormon... I begin to find an appreciation for the sacrifices that these men, women, and even children were able to make. I don't fully understand how this fits into Heavenly Fathers plan for imperfect mortals like myself, but I do find it interesting that God seems to work in ways that simple and honest folks like the people expressed in this video, are able to find a testimony and keep covenants which seem so... mysterious...that it helps me have the faith requisite to keep praying and believing this Church is true, and more importantly that I might have a role to play in it all at some point in my life, however small or meaningless it is or may seem at times. Thank you for the people who put the effort and energy into making this video available, and I pray those hands and hearts will be eternally blessed for it, just like Joseph and his friends. Take care and God Bless.

      I am also a witness of the truth of The Book of Mormon. At the beginning of this year, as we began to study The Book of Mormon as a church, I prayed again to know if The Book of Mormon was true. I had a powerful witness from the Holy Ghost that the testimony of the three witnesses was true, and then the testimony of the eight witnesses were true. The Holy Ghost also confirmed that every word of Joseph Smith's testimony was true. And if those testimonies about a book were true, then the book itself was true. I know that The Book of Mormon was true. It is the abridged record of an ancient people who were Christians on the American continents. It is a record of their witness of Him. The Book of Mormon really is another witness of Jesus Christ. I know it is true, and I am so grateful that I have it in my life to teach me about Jesus! ❤

      @nathanaronsohn8665 Рік тому

      I think the fact that David Whitmer never came back to the original church provides even more credence to the truthfulness to his testimony especially since he was interviewed much more than Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris and lived longer too yet even with his falling out with the church he never ever denied his witness and in fact when people would try to twist his words he would go out of his way to correct them and reaffirm his testimony even on his death bead he said he was not deceived and he really had seen what he had seen, people would try to attack his testimony and try to dismiss it or poke holes in it but he held firm and he never once denied his testimony nor did any of the 11 witnesses even though all 3 of the 3 witnesses left the church at one point and 3 of the 8 witnesses did as well, they were harassed and persecuted they had nothing to gain if this was just some “fraud scheme” being a witness costed them different things, Mormons were hated and being associated with them would make you less likely to work in certain places or be treated the same, now think about it like this I am a witness of the Book of Mormon and I leave the church if this was just a fraud or Joseph Smith convinced me to do this or something why not just deny my testimony and destroy the church, any of the witnesses denying their testimony would have greatly damaged the church and Joseph smith’s credibility if this was just a lie that why didn’t any of the 11 witnesses just recant their testimony especially since some of them actually had internal strife with Joseph and the Church why not just expose Joseph smith as a fraud? Because these men really saw what they saw and despite all the attacks despite all the bad treatment that they received for their testimonies they held true because it really did happen they really did experience what they experienced, people will continue to attack Mormonism they will continue to attack HIS church but we will not back down, we will push forward in faith, these men had their lives threatened, David Whitmer was threatened at gunpoint to recant his testimony and you know what he did?? He did the very opposite he bore a powerful testimony to the mob to what he had seen and heard regarding his testimony, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is Jesus Christ’s church and the Book of Mormon is true, truth is eternal

      Hyrum Smith one of the 8 witnesses was incarcerated in Carthage jail with Joseph, now I have to think to myself if I was Hyrum and I was just covering for my con brother I probably would have just been like I’m done like dude this whole thing was made up by my brother the Book of Mormon is false please get me out of here IF this really was just a fraud scheme, but I know this is not the case the witnesses had good characters for the most part and people instead of trying to attack their morality would instead come up with alternative explanations because it was so hard to try to assassinate their character, like personally if I was 1 of the witnesses like Hyrum being in jail for months being fed super badly having to stay in a cold damp dungeon basically for months being fed scraps and literally getting poisoned if what was on my testimony in the Book of Mormon was not really true I would given up lol and I’m sure many other people would have too if they were put In Hyrum’s place or the place of the other witnesses if this really had not happened, the witnesses did not behave in the way con men or fraudulent people would, they behaved in a way that is character of the story that is in the beginning of the Book of Mormon in which these 3 witnesses and 8 witnesses testify to the world what they had heard and saw

    To me, the strongest evidence that the Book of Mormon is true is its narrative voice. What do I mean by that? Well, if you read anything written by Joseph Smith, you will find that he had a writing style that included long sentences and many commas. Now read the Book of Mormon. It is written in a different style. Chapters and verses, yes, but also much of it was summarized from other records by the ancient prophet Mormon. Therefore, one would expect to find a different style of sentences, commas, etc. That is exactly what we see.

      Not only that, but each book within the Book of Mormon has a different style too. Alma I think was a phonetic 4, while the Nephi`s were phonetic -1, and Mosiah was different as well. And you`re right, Joseph writes at a phonetic 9, much different than the Book of Mormon

    So if Martin Harris is a reliable witness, how do you know the Vorhee plates produced by James Strang are not true?

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 3 роки тому

      I don't think Martin Harris is connected to the Vorhee plates at all. I suppose anyone is free to investigate the Vorhee plates and ask God about them, but frankly, the text given by Strang is very brief and not likely to be useful for anyone. If you take particular insight from them, feel free to share.

      the Vorhee plates were like 3 inches big. could fit it in your pocket.odd if you ask me. I think many believe that mr. Strange had forged plates. His witnesses did not go to the grave with their testimony. One retracted and called it a fake. I think its safe to say the plates were real but just not authentic. ( Vorhee plates)

      I recall most witnesses of the Vorhee plates later recanted their testimony. One even said they helped forge them? I recall something about someone pretending to be an angel. Might need to find my books on Strang again.

    While the scripture was being highlighted, the audio narration did not use the word "not" in front of true, while the text showed it.
    True, not true? This error seems to show a contradiction. I get what's being said and even read, as the visual language is a little more difficult. But the narration should follow the written text of the scripture.

    I love the principle of witnesses. Many have added their testimonies as witnesses of truths, such as the reality of the Books of Mormon, but the most important witness of any truth is our own, which is obtained through sincere study, prayer, and application.

    The law of witnesses... I was thinking that was that one law where if a prophet had already witnessed of a thing, the current prophet would reference that first witness and then bear their own witness.
    ... the law of first witness?..

    • @sadespain2339
      @sadespain2339 3 роки тому

      Not necessarily. The law of witnesses means more than one person, usually two or three, testifies of the truth of something. The prophet can testify of something, and they can bear witness of what previous prophets have said, but so can general members. Anyone to whom the Holy Ghost has testified of the truth of something can bear witness or bear record of the truth.

    I am not sure where this story came from but if you read the earliest accounts of the first vision, this is nothing like it. And Joseph Smith wrote three original accounts. Look it up LDS! His account changes each time that he rewrote it!
    According to the original accounts, Joseph Smith held the "plates" at a distance (covered) and told the other two what they were. They "witnessed" and told everyone about them but never actually saw them. Additionally, the other 11 never really saw them either.
    Later, when Joseph Smith was heading west, the original witnesses did not stick with the faith. They all went in a different religious direction. Even Joseph Smith's wife left the faith after his murder.
    You can read these accounts in your church history which the LDS do not publish but have available upon request.

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 3 роки тому

      You are incorrect. I've studied the accounts of Joseph Smith's first vision with my children and I find all of his personal accounts insightful. Some people try to twist the testimonies of the three and eight witnesses, but when you read them for yourself you find that they not only saw the plates but touched and held them also. It's printed in each copy of the Book of Mormon, and has been consistent over the many years of the book's publication. It is true that some of the witnesses of the Book of Mormon left the Church, and some returned, but none ever retracted their statements about the gold plates. They all held to their testimony.

      People struggle with their faith for various reasons. Jesus taught about this in the Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13, where the seeds were good but didn't grow well in some places, meaning that despite being taught truth, some people didn't allow it to grow in them. Some who leave eventually return as they overcome their trials of faith, like Martin Harris.

      A witness' testimony is indeed a form of evidence in a court of law, and it is often the only form of evidence available. But for everyone, the most important evidence we have is the witness we receive from God Himself through His Spirit when we study the Book of Mormon and pray sincerely to know of its truth. You can have this personal witness, too.

    In the July/August 2018 edition of "Biblical Archaeology Review" on page 32, is an article "Egyptian Papyrus Sheds New Light on Jewish History."
    The author is Karel van der Toorn.
    The article is about a papyrus roll (P. Amherst 63) discovered in the late 19th century at Luxor (ancient Thebes).
    It took more than 120 years to decipher the text. It was discovered that Egyptian Demotic script had been used to write Aramaic text! The translation turned out to include three Israelite psalms written about 400BC.
    This is an example of "reformed Egyptian" used by Israelites and discovered by non-Mormons!

    Those that do not believe in Christ have no evidence. Those of us who have a testimony of Christ. Have all had similar events happen to us, or words from the Spirit, or blessings. Navinewolf, you are incorrect. They touched the plates, and stated it very clearly in their testimony, as printed in every copy of the Book of Mormon. (ChurchOfJesusChrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/eight). Some witnesses did speak of also having spiritual vision in addition to seeing the plates and physically touching them, but they've been misquoted and had their words misinterpreted by some who try to detract from their testimony, and then others have passed on that misunderstanding. By reading the actual testimony you can see for yourself that the physically touched the plates.
