- The gold plates contained the teachings of prophets in ancient America. The teachings were etched on gold plates in an ancient reformed Egyptian language and later translated by Joseph Smith into English as the Book of Mormon.
In 1820, a young boy named Joseph Smith prayed to know which church was true. In answer to his prayer, he was visited by God and Jesus Christ. In 1823, the Angel Moroni visited Joseph Smith and told him about a sacred record on gold plates that were buried in a hill by Joseph’s home.
The gold plates were seen by Joseph Smith and a few other witnesses. From their accounts, the plates were 8 inches long, about 6 or 7 inches wide, and 4 inches thick. Individual plates were as thin as parchment paper. The plates weighed about 40-60 pounds.
The record on the gold plates included teachings of prophets who lived in the ancient Americas. Joseph Smith translated the record into what is now known as the Book of Mormon. The greatest event recorded in the Book of Mormon is the personal visit of the Lord Jesus Christ to the people in the Americas.
About 300 years after Jesus Christ appeared in the Americas, Mormon, an ancient prophet-historian, abridged the record and gave the gold plates to his son Moroni. That same Moroni hid the record in the hill and later appeared to Joseph Smith in 1823.

I'm reading it too and it gave me a lot of things to ponder wherein my understanding's being test and the more I read it, the more I get to comprehend, know the truth, and know how Heavenly Father through His Son Jesus Christ loves us. It's so amazing. I'm thankful I get the chance to have and read it.
OK, so where are these plates now. If there was a native American following of Jesus Christ, how did it became forgotten?
The people who had once been believers, known as Nephites, mostly became wicked and turned away from their faith, and then their nation was destroyed by the nation known as the Lamanites. However, there are some tales that were carried on, such as the visit of a light-skinned, bearded God; I think the name used was Queztalcoatl.
It’s really simple actually, Joseph Smith got these plates, translated them and then returned them to angel moroni to be “Written and sealed up, and hid up unto the Lord, that they might not be destroyed-To come forth by the gift and power of God unto the interpretation thereof-“ title page of THE BOOK OF MORMON.
I like the short, simple format of this explanation.
Correction is needed. You depict the prophet translating the plates, but recently The Church admitted the prophet put his head into a hat and translated the Book of Mormon using a seer stone, without the plates being present. I entered the church in 1977, and still enjoy studying the book. At that time, I was taught the prophet translated by actually looking at the plates and turning pages. It was how I understood it, until the stone in hat correction. It doesn't matter how the prophet translated; The book is a valuable restoration of truths -- I'm good with that.
From the accounts we have it seems evident that he used more than one specific method over time, though each was by the gift and power of God.
38 years ago I was given a copy of the Book of Mormon. I was not very familiar with the Church of Jesus Chris of Latter Day Saints. About a year later, I finally started reading the book. I found it interesting and continued reading. At one point, I started to question if this book was truly the word of God written by ancient prophets. The more I read, the more intense my prayers became to learn the truth. My own personal miracle occurred and I received and answer to my prayers that I can not deny. Days later, I was baptized into the Church and to this day, thank God for what I learned from this book.

Feelings are a good way to discover truth? Do members of other religions have religious experiences? Do they have powerful feelings of truth? How do you know their truth is not real? If I told you a fantastical story would you believe me? For me fantastical claims require extraordinary evidence. I don’t rely on feelings. Everyone has strong feelings and beliefs, these don’t make things true.

When I received my Book of Mormon it was a small book of about 500 plus pages. It would be a feat for me because of having a reading disability so I started out with prayer and decided I’d read a page a day. Most days I had to reread the page because my mind likes to wonder. I remember reading a page and having to go back three times. I was so frustrated and wanted to quit! I pleaded with God to help me to stay focused. After that heart felt prayer I proceeded to read. Something so amazing happened. As I read each page it became a movie. The stories were vivid to me. I began reading more than a page seeing the events unfold before me.
I had never read a book of any kind to the end until this book. When I came to the last page and saw that I had actually finished, this extraordinary book I began to cry. I did not want the Book of Mormon to end. I knew it was and most definitely a book that came from God. I was in my 20’s back when this happened and my conversion into the Church was absolute and final. I’ve re read the Book of Mormon again and again and I learn something new each time.
God was definitely my teacher that day. I am now 67 and still active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Im happy.

Why so many changes made to “the most perfect book”?

He did say most perfect, he said most correct.
The changes were spelling and grammar, just like whenever we write a report or whatever, we need to go over it to correct spelling, grammer, punctuation etc. None of the changes were doctrinal.
The actual words Joseph Smith used were "most correct book". I've written a book--just a novel--and even for someone like me who is well-educated and detail-oriented, I still I made errors; even several years after publication I went back and found errors that I wanted to correct. In Joseph Smith's statement, I'd say that "correctness" suggests faithfulness to the intended meaning--correct principles that convey God's truth--rather than proper punctuation and spelling, which is what constitute the vast majority of changes to the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith had an enormous task of translating the Book of Mormon in a very short time, and it was his scribes that added punctuation. The fact that Joseph Smith performed translation of almost the entirety of our final English version in a single pass is amazing. If you ever translate or otherwise produce a written work of your own, and experience the enormity of the task, you'll be amazed at what Joseph Smith (and his scribes) did.
The Doctrines are what is perfect, grammer not so much. I've compared, I've listened to The Book of Mormon while reading text from the original manuscript, no doctrine is changed.
I encourage any Mormon who takes his faith seriously to look into early heresies that the Christian church had to face. The Bible and the book of Mormon are not two witnesses as claimed. Look at how the Gnostics tried to do the same thing in the early church and how they view Christ. In reality, only God can show you the truth, you have to ask in prayer with humility for the truth and it will be given.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ accept the Book of Mormon as scripture precisely because of prayer. Have you ever read it? Have you ever asked Church members why we believe what we believe?
@@00Fisher00 hey Jay, I don't doubt the relationship an individual may have with God. But there is a difference between those born of the flesh and those born of the spirit. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, He does not change. His Church has always been His church from the moment of pentecost. I would encourage any serious Mormon into looking into what the early church looked like. Read on what Saint Athanasius wrote on the incarnation. The spirit of truth will always lead those who want only the truth to it. On a side note, I absolutely love Mormons, there are things I can definitely personally take and apply it in my life.

Second only to my gratitude for the Savior and his Atonement for each of us, I am grateful for Joseph Smith and the Restoration. The Book of Mormon is truly God’s word for us given to and through his prophets. I strongly recommend that you read it, especially the chapters that describe the Savior’s visit to the Nephites after his Resurrection (3 Nephi, chapters 11 - 27). And after you have read it, please study the challenge found near the end, in Moroni 10: 3 - 5, very closely, and then put it to the test. You will be very glad you did!

You can see the golden plates on Wikipedia. Its in an article about a native American Tribe of people called the Wyandotte Heron. The Tribal leaders are wearing the plates around their necks like pendants. The plates are round like plates not square like a leaf. They are about the same size as a CD (compact disk)

The coming forth of the Book of Mormon is in absolute miracle! I love how there were multiple witnesses, that handled and looked at the gold plates, as well as witnesses who actually saw the angel, and the plates. Not only this, but it's a miracle that Joseph Smith translated such a record by the power of God. Emma Smith said that Joseph Smith had no notes whatsoever. Imagine a the prophet dictating the words to a scribe for them to write, with zero drafts, extremely intricate details of people, places, gospel doctrine, and principles, that contain nearly countless quotable verses, and most importantly testify very firmly that Jesus Christ is our Messiah and savior of all mankind!

Jesus Christ did warn of false prophets, and he said we would know them by their fruits. Millions of people have read the Book of Mormon and received a witness from God that it contains His true word like the writings of the Bible. @@johnboakye2517 It's not that Moroni would have a need for the plates, but there are other reasons why it could have been important for him to take them away. For example, while Joseph Smith had them there were many times he was put in danger as people tried to steal them, even breaking into his house and threatening his family. The Church was actually poor for a long time, but faithful Church members contributed tithes and offerings and in recent years, stewards of these sacred funds have managed them very well. For my part, I grew up eating food provided by the Church, and I'm more than happy to contribute offerings now so that others can have their needs met. I am impressed with the way the Church manages money; the only extravagances taken are in building fine temples to God, which are only used to serve Him and His children. I'd be happy to tell you more about any of this.
Where are these "plates" now? Can I see them? Has anyone seen them? How do we know there was a correct translation if they exist? This "explanation" just brings up more questions

what a joke. There were no gold plates, they made it up. Its way too convenient that the plates were “given back” when the religion was established
Multiple people saw the plates and touched them, and even those who later had problems and left the Church never denied their testimony of the gold plates. The fact that the gold plates were taken back is not a matter of convenience at all; people had been actively trying to steal them from Joseph Smith for their value just as a large quantity of precious metal, to the point of robbing him on the road and invading his home. The wonderful thing about the Book of Mormon is that anyone can know for themselves that it is true scripture. I invite you to learn about the book for yourself.

Me too. I converted to The Church of Jesus Christ after reading the Book of Mormon, but I still teach my children about the Catholic saints (espectially Joan of Arc and Francis of Assisi) because it is my heritage and I want them to know about it and appreciate the miracles that have happened in Catholicism. To anyone who wonders: "Why does anyone [need] the Book of Mormon?"
Consider the following logic by my own reasoning [ brief and imperfect] -
The Bible is truly the Word of God. However, anyone can argue that it's an [incomplete] regional record written by the Israelites and is a religious history for THAT people. Given its limited scope of influence (the Middle East) anyone could argue that's it's limitations are to that region and people. As an example, the I-Ching contains incredibly useful information and is considered to be inspirational to many. One can easily argue that the I-Ching is as imperative for the human soul as the Bible because it contains truth. However, it does not testify of Jesus Christ, nor His Gospel. This is a problem because the Bible now has an equal in terms of validity. Barring the testimony of Jesus Christ, that is (this is another topic - yet, the most important). That last (most important) part aside, anyone could say, "The Bible's good for the Christians and Jews, but not for [insert civilization here] because it's not from [insert region here]."
One cannot simply say, "The Bible is true because it's the Bible" because someone can easily say, "Well, the I-Ching is true because it's the I-Ching". God provides us [all] with evidences for our faith.
What if there was a record that contained the same Testament to Jesus Christ and His Divinity? It wasn't found in the Middle East but in another part of the world. In this case, the Americas. This Testament of Christ indicates that He is the God of the [WHOLE WORLD] and not a regional deity in the Middle East.
That is the case for the Book of Mormon. It does testify that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God. It supports everything the Bible has been saying all along but it provides insights and understanding that, for various reasons, may have been omitted from the Bible. It says Jesus Christ is the God of the WHOLE Earth. His Word extends to everyone and is [for everyone].
I know that it's true. I've read it and prayed to God to gain my own witness that it's true. I have the same exact witness for the Holy Bible. Without [that most important witness] none of it would matter to me. It'd all just be some more books I maybe should read. But that's not the case. [God] told [me] it was all true.
If you're reading this and wondering if this is all real; if there really is a God and this Joseph Smith guy is legit, I can only offer my assurances to you that it is all true.
If you want to know for yourself, you'll have to read and find out.

The very point you made that the Book of Mormon adds to our knowledge that Christ is the God of the whole earth is for me the thing that makes it questionable. Since the Bible doesn’t teach this, how do I know that the BOM isn’t presenting “another Christ”?

How are the plates tangible evidence if none of you have ever seen or touched them? Only those who founded and started the church have claimed to see them. I’m pretty sure tangible means that it is something that can be touched and I don’t know a single Mormon who has touched the gold plates.
They were tangible for those who did touch them. To clarify, the ancient prophet Mormon did touch them, whereas members of the modern Church of Jesus Christ who are alive today have not. Our experience with the Book of Mormon is different. You may be curious about why we believe that the Book of Mormon is true scripture from God; if so, I would be happy to tell you why I believe it.

I have been born into this Church, and for the last 22 years, I have seen friends who grew up in the Church alongside me, fall away. It has made me think as to why I am still a member. After pondering for days on end, I have come to the conclusion that I want to know the truth of all things. I have been given this covenant, and to see it through, I will continue living by the Gospel for the rest of my life, and in the life to come.
So, what am I trying to get at? I wait expectantly for the day that we get to read what those sealed pages of the Golden Plates contain.
I wonder where the gold plates are now. What happened to them? Maybe that will be revealed when Jesus comes again, maybe it will be revealed tomorrow. I don't know. But God knows, he is all know, he is a kind compassionate God. He loves you, and YOU are his child. No matter what you have done, you can repent and be saved. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the TRUE church of God. Amen.
The gold plates were given to Moroni after the translation was complete. I am excited to know what other mysteries God has in store for all in this world!!

There was a General Authority who spoke to a congregation and asked them how many of you want to read the sealed portion of the Book of Mormon? All hands were raised. Then he asked no one raise your hand how many of you are reading the Book of Mormon everyday? Then explained the Lord will not give us more till we take full advantage of what we already have. So if you really want to read the sealed portion of the Book of Mormon you need to read and study what you already have or the Lord will not see it fit to give us more.

Yes. Mormon was the ancient prophet who compiled the inspired writings of Nephite prophets into the Book of Mormon. His son, Moroni, finished the record and buried it in the earth, so he was sent to show the location to Joseph Smith.
That makes no sense, if maroni can come down to earth and pick up the plates and take them back from Joseph Smith, why didn't he just come down and give them to Joseph Smith? Why bother burying them in a hill for a thousand years? Why would you risk them getting damaged or stolen or destroyed buried in a hillside if you have the ability to freely travel to and from Earth carrying the plates? Doesn't add up.
That's a fair question Richie, and the answer is God can do many things that He does not do. Sometimes we can learn more about God by what He doesn't do than what He does.
He was a mortal being and buried them before dying. It was a normal thing for him to do, and it worked just fine. Later, he returned as a resurrected being to show Joseph Smith where they were, and later to take them again. It adds up fine. You could ask why an all-powerful God doesn't do many other things, and I think we have to assume that it doesn't suit His purpose.
Richie parrish Moroni buried the plates when he was still alive. The reason for not giving Joseph the plates right away was that he wasn’t ready for them yet. Moroni had to train him so that he would be willing to do everything in his power to keep them safe.
This video seems to imply that Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon from the gold plates. I thought that the church acknowledged that Joseph Smith used a hat and a stone to do so.
Is that the case? And if so, why is that part left out of the video?

Why did Smith wait four years after Moroni told him the plates were buried in a hill near his house before he went and got them? Didn't Moroni tell him why he was being told this and that he was expected to translate them?

To those who dislike, i was once like you. I was not believing it before but I was challenged to Read, Ponder and Pray. Then I Ask God if The Book of Mormon is true. My answer is big big YES. This is real. Satan does not want you to read it because you will get closer to God the Father and Jesus Christ and trully the Holy Ghost will testify to you that it is true. Then many things in this world and to the next will be unfolded to your mind and heart. This is why the opposition does not want you to read it. Believe me, I am now a happy member of this church from QC, Philippines

I read it, and it is fake. Your religion relies completely on trusting Joseph Smith. He created it all. He made up civilians, visions, and golden plates - no evidence for any of this. I’ll keep my faith in Christ’s Church, the Catholic Church, that has 2000 years of history.

@@budtrom We do have several source documents for Biblical writings and can verify that they're old. No amount of scientific measurement and analysis leads us to know that they are inspired by God; that's something that God shows us, personally. God operates through faith. As we read in Hebrews 11:1, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Verse 6 continues as follows: "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." Having copies of the record or even possessing the plates themselves wouldn't give people faith; we must exercise faith first, and if it is faith in God's truth, he will reward us with knowledge. That is how members of the restored Church of Jesus Christ come to have such confidence in spiritual matters.
Reading the Saints Volume I gave me such a deep insight into how insane Joseph's life had been. What a blessing it is that it all came through in the end.

Moroni's trumpet at the SLC temple falling down is no accident. Nothing happens by chance alone. Soon after this, the missionaries were gathered home and all temples the world over were closed. We will see how it unfolds .

He had to conceal them. Others in the area became aware that he had them, and sometimes he was accosted on the road or even had his house invaded, so he had to find new hiding places for them. He eventually was instructed to give them back to Moroni.
Jude 3 (CSB): Dear friends, although I was eager to write you about the salvation we share, I found it necessary to write, appealing to you to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all.
Jude 1:3, KJV: "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."
What strikes you about this particular verse? It's far more helpful to share your thoughts on a passage than it is to merely cite the verse alone, because otherwise we don't know why you're bringing it up.
What strikes me is that Nephi did not write in Hebrew. What would this say about the writing of people living in Jerusalem then?
The last prophet, Moroni, gave insight about this, and it really says much more about Mormon and Moroni's condition than the people of Jerusalem. In Mormon 9:32-33, Moroni stated, "And now, behold, we have written this record according to our knowledge, in the characters which are called among us the reformed Egyptian, being handed down and altered by us, according to our manner of speech. And if our plates had been sufficiently large we should have written in Hebrew; but the Hebrew hath been altered by us also; and if we could have written in Hebrew, behold, ye would have had no imperfection in our record." They had chosen metal plates to make the record more durable, but consequently it was important to use a form of written communication that was more space-efficient, even though Moroni worried that he didn't always express himself perfectly in that shorter written language.

The Book of Mormon is not a replacement or substitute for the Holy Bible, but a companion to it, and it testifies of Jesus Christ as our Savior. Members of the Church are taught from the Bible and the Book of Mormon and consider both to be holy scripture containing the word of God. The writings of the Bible encourage you to do the opposite! Paul said this of scripture, in 2 Timothy 3:16 - "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness". The apostle John's final words, in John 21:25, were, "And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen." It would be a shame for someone to reject the New Testament merely because they already had the Old Testament. By the same token, it would be a shame to reject God's word in the Book of Mormon simply because we have a part of His word already somewhere else. All of God's word is good and was given to us for our benefit. You can know it for yourself as you read the Book of Mormon on your own.

What proof? That old writings exist? Or that the writings contain God's word and truth? The mere presence of an ancient record does not indicate that it is scripture; there are a lot of old writings that were not inspired by God. May I ask you about your beliefs? I know why I believe that the Bible contains God's word, but why do you believe that?

Why take the Gold Plates away? Now we have to go off the testimony of a single person of what these documents said?
Not at all. There were quite a few other witnesses of the plates, but God doesn't expect us to merely take their word for it all. The Book of Mormon contains truth that will be recognized by those who seek it, and it also contains an important promise at the end. Moroni, the last prophet of the Book of Mormon, had the entire compilation in his possession before burying the plates for over a millennium. Before he put them down, he included these words at the end, in Moroni 10:4-5 - "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." Those who follow this promise, studying and asking God in sincerity and faith, receive an answer. Millions of people have done so, and you can also.

Moroni “has them in his charge” (Joseph Smith History 1:60). I am sure the reason is for safe-keeping as it was accounted that people were attempting every stratagem to steal them from Joseph.

“Now you know!” Just like being taught from the time your a baby, “I know this and I know that”, when your “bearing your testimonies!” The Bible has around 44,000 physical evidences to back it up. Where are your evidences to back up your books and claims? “I know”= blind faith!
Things such as ancient cities cement and barley have been found to date to Book of Mormon times which all were previously believed to not exist and all of these things have been mentioned in the Book of Mormon Before they have been found

What if you died young, before you ever had an opportunity to physically see the physical evidence? What if you were super poor and you lived super far away from the physical evidence and you could not afford to go see it physically? What if you are born blind? God has made it so that anyone, anywhere can know the truthfulness and reality of His teachings, regardless of their physical or economic condition. He has it set up so that He doesn’t have to pass a small piece of physical evidence around to billions and billions of people.

Some physical evidences of the Bible tend to support it as a historical document while others cast doubt (though you're probably not paying attention to those), but no physical evidence of any ancient text indicates that a book contains God's word. Evidence that any book is inspired scripture comes only from God Himself. "I know" isn't blind faith at all, and you'd do better to understand how members of the Church of Jesus Christ come to know what we do.
