Arguably the most unique anime opening reaction on the channel simply because, is it an anime or is it not? We’ll let you guys debate that in the comments below!

All the RWBY openings are composed and recorded by a father-daughter team of Jeff Williams and Casey Lee Williams. Casey actually recorded the volume 1 OP when she was 13.

Fun fact you don’t need to censor or cut down the videos for RWBY they love when people react to their songs and the show itself it’s just UA-cam but if you contact roosterteeth if something related to it gets taken down they can bring it back up for you

Background info. Season one was only animated by around 10 people with very little money. Most of the animation was done by the creator because RWBY was his passion project and he was a workaholic. Aside from the fight scenes, which were the creator's speciality, the animation is pretty jank and they had to cut corners. But with each season the animation gets better because they get more animators and money to work with. And after season 4 they switch animation programs. The first 3 season were done in Poser. Which isn't really a program designed to animate a whole show. It is supposed to be just for 3D models of people. They then switch to Maya which is like the industry standard program for a 3D animated show.

Monty Oum was the show creator - the idea originated from him. He was working on the show Red vs. Blue at the time, and he went to the Rooster Teeth execs and they gave him permission to create his show. It was on less than a shoestring budget, though (he literally created the world of Remnant at a restaurant using ketchup and a napkin), and it really shows in some of the animation quality in Volume 1 - and yet considering the budget it's also amazing what they pulled off. You can tell it gets better funded as the volumes progress because the art and animation kept getting better, to the point where in volume 3 they were really pushing beyond the limits of what their software was able to handle.
The show generates some hate by numerous people on the internet because it's the internet and opinions are a dime a dozen, but it also has an extremely loyal fanbase, to the point where the only qualifications for being considered part of the FNDM is clearing volume 3 (and if you watch, you'll understand why).
And for the record, Monty Oum passed away due to complications from a routine surgery. He had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia used and died as a result.

Players and Pieces is the initial hook that keeps you watching and wanting more, while volume 3 really hammers the nail into the coffin for being a RWBY fan. At least, that’s how I see it.

A funny detail in the whole "Is it anime?" debate is that the show is popular enough in Japan to have an official JP dub. AFAIK, Japanese fans consider it anime.
Volume 9 is currently in production and just recently released a WIP sneak peek. So yeah the show's still going.

Nobody really knows what RWBY is. Some say it's an anime, some say it's a webseries. It's really up to you
@furuta kun Agreed. The animation style is Anime inspired, but the story telling is more Western than Japanese. Although it does pay homage to some of the tropes of Anime (annoyingly so sometimes .. 😏)

All the music is done by a father daughter team. Jeff and Cassie Williams. She was like 13 or 14 when she started with volume 1.
Ruby (red) and Yang (yellow) are half sisters. The blonde man you saw with Yang in the 4th opening is their father. Ruby is based on little red riding hood. Yang is based on Goldilocks.
Blake (black) is based on Bell from beauty and the beast. Weiss (white) is based on Snow white. In fact her full name is Weiss Schnee which is German and translates to White Snow.
Monty died shortly after volume 2. They call seasons volumes. He had the headmaster of the first school based on his real life looks. He wanted to voice them. But instead he played a side main character name Li Ren. Who after his passing his brother took over voicing the character. Neath has done a wonderful job.
You should really check out the show it's really fun. It can be slow at first. But it gets better along with the animation. As you could tell with how each opening got better.
Spoilers
If you like shopping there is plenty of that to go around. Two of the main shops are with Li Ren and Nora (the pink girl with the hammer) they are based on gender bent mythological characters. Ren is based on Mulan and Nora is based on Thor.
The other ship is with Blake and Yang. They are slowly built up over the 8 years. This is the most popular ship in the show. Almost everyone who works on it even supports it. But because it's so popular it gets its hate. Ranging from people who don't like the couple, to homophobic jerks to people who think their relationship should be handled differently. But that's what happens when your the most popular.
You've got one little misconception..: it's still ongoing (one season per year) and the story is far from over ^^
Edit: another thing is, v4 was the volume after the loss of monty oum and a tiny little detail in the lyrics of this song makes it special again:

@@kiritoliger468 nah I think it was last years RTX or the one beforehand Miles and Kerry said that they had Volumes 8 and 9 planned and had started writing them. Volume 9 was the last one they planned to make and it would be mostly fights apparently. However a lot has changed since then so maybe warner asked them to extend the franchise so they could make more cashmoney off of it.

I truly TRULY hope and pray they react to this series. Also for a little info Rooster Teeth actually encourages UA-camrs to react to there shows especially this one without editing it all, full reactions especially their songs as well. They won't copyright claim it at all.
Monty's specialty was creating animated fight scenes with many original ideas. He caught people's attention with things like "Haloid", a Master Chief vs Samus machinima, and "Dead Fantasy" , a series where he used DOA and Final Fantasy models to choreograph a bunch of epic fights. The videos were impressive, even without considering that they were done by a single dude for a hobby. Rooster Teeth brought him on to animate on Red vs Blue, and eventually provided him the means to develop his own creative ideas with original assets (RWBY).
since you've watched the opening im obligated to recommend the 4 Trailers for this show.
the show is long so watching the whole thing is a bit of a rough sell at this point. but they released 4 trailers as promotion material for this show before it aired, each one showing off fights with each of the main 4 characters. They are only a few minutes long , are made to watch with no knowledge of the show, and are some of Montys coolest work imo
Guys watch the trailers Red, White, Black, Yellow, and then watch volume 1. I bet you'll get hooked.

6 and 8 are my two favorites as well. 7 was very good, but there was something special about those two in particular for me. Loved your little hypotheses when you saw various stuff, though my lips are sealed on what was accurate and what wasn't.
There are two types of animation engines that were used, the fist 3 uses Poser, and the rest is Maya, with improved upgrades every season, here in hopes you watch the series with us👍🏻✌️🥳

There is a RWBY game called RWBY: Grimm Eclipse that I believe is actually canon? It's a 3D beat em up where you can play as the main squad of girls as well as another group that is prominent in the show.
Oh and RWBY makes a very brief appearance in the background of "Ready Player One".

Most of the wepons are duel wepon. They have two wepons in one. But overall it's a good series. I recommend watching it if you haven't. Plus all the characters are based on fairy tale characters.
Watching this has me hyped for Volume 9 :) When it comes out i'd love to see your reaction to that one as well.
For anyone who thinks that real Anime can be made outside of Japan: do you also think real Champagne can be made outside of Champagne, or real Parmesan Reggiano can be made outside of Parma? Defining something in part by its place of origin may seem weird, but it's something we do all the time because local variables can make a significant difference in the final product, even when you follow the same recipe.

You didn't really need to edit the video cuz RT doesn't strike reactors, they actually encourages them cuz it's advertising for them and it gives them a concrete feedback for their content. If YT blocks it you just have to message RT and they'll unblock it.
I agree with you that OP4 doesn't hit the same way as the rest but it's mainly because Volume 4 is more of a character development season, it's less packed in action or fights and more with dialogues, flashbacks and psychological stuff. It's a very important part of the story, also with all the context of the story and RT's situation at the time, i can assure you the song itself hits probably harder than all the other OP songs, especially the full version that you can find on music streaming platforms. (with the rest of the op songs and OST tracks as well of course but you shouldn't go there before actually watching the show)

I personally wouldn't call it anime... To me it feels like westerners, maybe people from the USA specifically, trying to mimic an anime kinda, but inadvertently in a western way... It's like when Hollywood makes a martial arts based film... Compare it to how Hong Kong would do it and there are clear differences in how they tell stories or direct stuff... Whether it be the acting, the cinematography or whatever... They have a different feel... That's not to say either is inherently better or worse, just different... I'm willing to drop that Anime needs to come from Japan, but I still expect it to tick the boxes anime does if we're going to call it anime...
From what I hear, in Japan they might call it an anime, I think they call all animated shows anime, but outside of Japan I feel we need a word for anime shows specifically and anime is the obvious word to use... But whatever, if people really want to call this an anime, it's not that big of deal, I guess lol. Still, I personally wouldn't group it with other anime myself.
Regardless, despite being a bit rough around the edges (especially at first) RWBY is such a cool show, despite its flaws in various areas... You can kinda tell it's relatively low budget, even at its best... But I'd say it was top end of that category... But more importantly it's an interesting and charming world that has clearly had a bunch of thought and care put into it... I'd recommend checking out the Red, White, Black and Yellow trailers for a bit more of an idea on the characters. It's not footage from the shows, more like little character shorts made to promote the show... The red trailer I think was made entirely by Monty as the proof of concept... It's all still a bit rough, but worth a watch... And if you ever want to react to the show, Rooster Teeth are happy with even unedited reactions, as long as you follow some guidelines etc.
Ya’ll do know that Anime by definition is a umbrella of genres right, Japan has claimed Anime multiple times as “Anyone can do it” and from anywhere, Non-Japanese artists and animatiors around the world have helped create some to most of your favorite anime and vice versa (Japanese Artists helping make shows like avatar for example)
The logic ya’ll are using about its Art and animation STYLE makes no sense and is flawed, Plenty of Anime have used 3D and CGI themselves, are they “game-like” too? What about language? English dubs dont change how its still anime, so what about RWBY having a offical Japanese dub?
Anime is literally just short for animation, and while i agree the community needs to come to better understanding and terms with how other cultures handle it (america is not the only place in the world that makes it, dont know why people act like it) this is really not that complicated, in my personal opinion, as long as the goal and vision itself is “anime”, then its anime, this is why i consider avatar a anime because it literally just holds everything that would make it one, and i know for a fact if it came from japan everyone would agree, RWBY is in a similar boat, key word “similar” since im not quite 100% on it
@@namelssssnake9466 Yes, I'm well aware of how diverse anime can be... But from watching a variety I've still noticed common characteristics between them... I don't overly care if it's 3D or not... I've seen many Japanese and western 3D animation and video games... Those are different too... I'm sorry, I'm not sure how to articulate the differences I see and how I could probably blindly guess which was which most of the time, but I often can... I could probably watch old western cartoons and guess if they were animated by a Japanese/korean studio most of the time...
But yeah, one tell tale example in RWBY is how Slapstick is typically done similar to Hanna Barbera or Looney Tunes rather than in typical anime style... The pacing of things is different... When they do the more anime stuff it comes across as Japan through the American lens... It's clearly anime inspired, but there are clearly a lot of American influences too... Some of the hand drawn art might pass, but the 3D style is a bit off... The Ex-Arms models are pretty much in an anime style, even if the rest of that show was badly done lol. Not a style you often see in 3D, I think, but it fits... I think I heard that studio group was Chinese... But yeah, while I still love the RWBY 3D model designs, they don't feel anime/Japanese to me...
I'm not trying to be snobby or gatekeep, but for me it's like choosing a frozen dessert... I could choose a Sorbet, frozen yoghurt, Ice cream or whatever... I love them all, but sometimes I'm really in the mood for one or the other... Assume I pick ice cream, then someone gives me frozen yoghurt instead... It's not the worst thing, but I did want ice cream and I can tell the difference... It doesn't make anything better to call the frozen yoghurt ice cream... Even though another day I might want frozen yoghurt... That probably won't make any sense, but hopefully you get what I mean >_>;;
Oh well, we can agree to disagree and no hard feelings... Call it anime if you want, but I personally wouldn't.
In Japan RWBY has some serious anime voice actor powerhouses for the dub: voices of Kakashi, Alphonse Elric, Gon, Rei, Sailor Venus, All Might, Solid Snake and many more
@@pumpkinwarrior7138 Yes, but having watched part of the Japanese dub, the dubbing factor is actually jarring for me because it doesn't fit as well lol. It's not bad acting or anything, from what I could tell, but yeah, the English fits a lot better with the animation... That makes it feel even more western to me... I usually don't mind either subs or dubs, unless the dub is actually terrible... That said, sometimes the bad dubs are more entertaining lol.
I dunno, I'm not trying to knock it or anything... Even with a quality Japanese dub, RWBY just isn't anime to me... It's a great show that I love and in some ways I prefer it to most anime... For me it's not about being an anime snob or saying RWBY isn't good enough... It's just that as a perfectly good key that opens another perfectly good door, it just doesn't turn in this other lock that it doesn't quite fit... That probably doesn't make sense either... Oh well >_>;

Funny, as music goes third is my least favorite for me, 1st 2nd, and 8th are my most favorite ones. As animation goes third is a good one, just that song is not my cup of tea.
Just remember for the first 2 volumes one man wrote and animated all of it. To top it all of he only had the budget of a ballonie sandwich and a can of coke. RIP Monty Oum.
That's not really true, but not many people worked on the first volumes, like 10 or something, Kerry and Miles were with him from the start, I don't know the animators.

WATCH OPENING 7 AGAIN + TRANSITIONS: there are some transitions hard to catch at first time... is in the first seconds, they change their clothes 3 times 0:17 of the opening after the rwby logo shows in the sky... Yellow is the first one to jum and changes from her first outfit to her second and the her firey hair... then follows the rest of the team.
Now that there is an official RWBY anime, and this series is part of canon, does that mean the RWBY soundtracks can be considered part of anime??

If you guys do decide to react to the show, I have some advice. Be _extremely_ wary of spoilers in the comment sections. RWBY is about to enter its 9th season, so it is rife with huge spoilers about the lore and characters. One of the bigger spoilers you have already seen, Yang’s lack of arm in later seasons. But trust me when I say there are some huge, and I mean ENORMOUS, spoilers for the later seasons.

Don’t read your comments until you have caught up, some people are mean. Or at least have somebody you know has seen RWBY rifle through your comments to only show you the safe ones if that’s possible.

Okay I think I found my problem with RWBY's openings the background and character designs don't blend together well enough so it gives you the PS 2 or 3 kind of look I am not saying character animation doesn't look good infact character animation might what I would say 7/10 specially because it's CGI also is all of RWBY in 60fps because that could be another problem to me because those look too smooth infact so smooth that it felt kinda odd
