The same singer - Casey Lee Williams - has sung every opening as well as most of the music for the entire series. Her father - Jeff Williams - composed the openings for vols 1-8, after which he retired. Casey as well as someone else (his name slips me at the moment) took over starting with vol 9.
This series started with a very low budget, which is part of the reason why the animation looks so different early on in the series compared to later. The other reason is starting with vol 4 they changed to a different animation software package which allowed them to do more things. By the end of vol 3 they were really pushing past what the software was capable.
And this was one of the three series that really got me interested in anime.

Yes, it was interesting how he, not knowing anything, picked up on pretty much all the art style and major changes to crew and production style.
Vol 1-3 was Poser, and it was never intended to be used how it was used. It's kind of amazing what they stubbornly pulled off.
Vol 4+ they switched to Maya, with more fidelity added to character models and environments. Production started to become more sophisticated with each volume after that and the addition of engineers finally building a production pipeline between vol5 and vol6. Vol 6+ saw more and more industry professionals hired to key and lead positions, with the biggest jump in sophistication coming with Vol.7 in overall look, and then Vol8 and Vol9 you get radically expanded scope and the best character animation the show has had to date.
edit: I shouldn't do a disservice to imply it was only the newer hires that made a difference. There were so many on the crew that had been there a long time. One of the backbones whose work everyone else's added onto was Kate running the team creating cameras and layouts with the directors. That just got better and better and rewatching Vol9 again, they touch every single shot and the compositions and movement are just outstanding.

I have heard of the later seasons, due to the music being heavily copyrighted geting copyright claimed. So it is tecinly allowed on youtube if it is in the corner of the screen and stuff but often creators struggle to make money of their videos due to the money going to RT instead. They have been known to fix the problem but from what I've seen creators have to wait for it to get claimed then made a claim and wait for it to be resolved. By the time it gets resolved the "prime" viewing time has passed so the creators don't get as much money. Having the unedited video on patron has been the best method for many creators so far as they can post the blurry or low audio ones on their TY and than post the full ones on their patron which allows then to make money off of both. They make around the same amount this way due to many peolpe not wanting to watch the altered vid and also not wanting to pay for the full one. So they don't really get more than they would if they were making full money off of the full vid on TY but they can get close to it with this two way to watch method. Someone else to note the bigger the channel is the faster RT resolves it so if your channel is bigger you problem won't loose much money doing it the wait and claim way.

Sorry in advance for the essay but this is my personal favorite series, one I react to myself and I want to do what I can to help, especially if you are willing to check the series out!
First off wanna jump in and say thanks for checking the series/openings out. Always love seeing new people introduced to my favorite series.
I will go at this kind of vaguely in an attempt to keep things fairly spoiler free... especially since I think the story and how it unfolds is an incredible aspect of the show.
Story basics: A team of four girls go to a school to learn how to fight monsters that infest their world. And things drastically grow from there over time.
And that's about the most i'd wanna throw your way haha. Certain things like nailing down the fairly obvious big bad and the struggles with fighting each other just as much as the monsters, you've pretty much got.
Leaving the story aside, the best way I could describe RWBY is, it's an absolute passion project created by the sadly now late Monty Oum and his friends and co-workers, that acts in so many ways as a love letter to classic art (fairytales, legends, stories of old) with a healthy love of anime. It starts with roughly the budget of a ham sandwich and grows into what it is today, with a drastically sized up team and budget, allowing them to tell the stories they had to fight tooth and nail through limitations back in the day to do. (though those first two volumes will always hold a place in my heart for their charm, and forshadowing/world building)
RWBY is in a lot of ways a deconstruction and championing of fairy tales and their heroes in particular (being at its by far most explicit in the Vol 9) both in the way that every single notable named character in the series is directly inspired and alludes to a character from somewhere else in art history. For example to get the big easy not so spoilery four out of the way. (leaving the names out for now)
Red girl: Little Red Riding hood
    White: Snow White
    Black: Beauty and the beast
    Yellow: Goldilocks
There's a lot more too that but again just for a baseline, besides I should really shut up haha.
Point is, it's a fantastic series that for many is utterly beloved for its fights, its music, it passion, world building and so on. For me and many others I know, the characters, their relationships and interactions are by far the strongest part and something that if it hooks you, it'll just never let go.
Anyway, i'll leave it there for now.
Absolutely cannot recommend the series enough, definitely worth a try, especially if you're willing to at least give those first 3 volumes a try as that will give a great perspective on what the show is and can be. (Its... a lot less of a large request than you'd expect, especially since volume 1 episodes are insanely short)
If you decide to check it out, know you will have many many fans and friends looking to stop by haha. And you shouldn't really experience to much difficulty in regards to reactions as RT has always been very on board with reactions from others. Can confirm, do reactions to the series myself. If you struggle with blocks at any point in your time, you can dispute it fairly easily, as well as directly contact them or just ask around for help from folks like myself.
Best of luck to you, sincerely hope you consider checking the show out and if you do... I'll be looking forward to it. Take care! =)

OH and one last thing as others have pointed out, if you do want to check it out (wont really give you a ton on the story but will give you a small idea of the vibe and animation (at least early on)) the Red, White, Black and Yellow trailers are effectively mini episodes and showcases of the main characters.. they're a ton of fun, and do have notable story relevance as you go!

To give a little context on the history. This was Rooster Teeth’s post Red vs Blue production. It was created by Monty Oum who had joined the RvB team and taken their fight choreography to the next level. That’s what you’re seeing. Monty tragically died during one of the early seasons, 3 or 4 I believe. The animation engine was constantly being upgraded, so that’s what you also saw. The soundtracks are stellar. You could already tell that. But they also used the music as leitmotif. When you’re ready, there is a nice video on how Forever Fall was used with Pyrrha, and when it gets to the scene, you’ll know it when it happens, bring the tissues. I’ve seen it 100 times and I still cry. It reaches into your soul.

Just discovered you through this video and really hope you watch this incredible series! This was first made in 2013 by one person named Monty Oum and as it gained more budget and popularity it got more and more people to help out. Monty had an eye for amazing fighting choreography and that plus the music sung by the amazing Casey Lee Williams and her father Jeff Williams is what got so much attention to the show. The people who created this are very cool with people reacting to this and if you do get claimed they’ll quickly sort it out. You mentioned the color contrast with the characters and that’s one of the key things to note about them plus the fact that they’re allusions are from either a fairy tale character or a mythological character or just a random object. If you do continue this highly suggest to watch the Red, White, Black, and Yellow trailers first before starting Volume 1. The storyline behind this show is amazing (granted with a few plot holes here and there). Oh also another thing to note each weapon you see is part melee (like a scythe) and part gun (like a sniper).

First time viewer here, but dedicated RWBY fan. It is an absolutely stupendous show. The characters all have excellent growth arcs, and I love that the writers don't feel like they're confined to specific styles of animation, storytelling, etc. You can really see the growth the series has gone through, even just watching the openings.
One of people's favorite things about RWBY is the music. Most tracks are written by Jeff Williams, with his daughter Casey Lee Williams doing vocals, while he does guitar and occasionally vocals as well. Casey Lee was only 12 when she started. As of Volume 9, she has taken over writing the soundtrack for the show as well, with her father no longer involved.

    • @ManiacGamer1988
      @ManiacGamer1988 Рік тому

It's hard to talk about the main story without spoilers, as the first three volumes involve events that are part of something much bigger, but nobody (viewer or protagonist) is aware of that until V3 is over. There is a lot of fighting, and most of that fighting takes place between two sides, with occasional third parties stepping in. There is occasional fighting between allies, especially in V3, which has a tournament arc, but the primary focus is either protagonists vs. antagonists or protagonists vs. Grimm, which are the black and white monsters you saw throughout the openings. Regardless of the fact that the main conflict is unknown early on, there is always a theme of "trying to stop the bad guys from doing whatever they're planning".
There are a lot of mysteries introduced throughout the show, and coming up on the end of V9, we're still waiting to solve some of them. There is also a lot of realistic (and some not-so-realistic) conflict among allies that sometimes adds significantly to the story and sometimes serves to grow a character.
The main focus of the show is on Team RWBY, their closes allies Team JNPR, and a handful of other characters that are introduced throughout the show. Each team is an acronym. RWBY stands for Ruby, Weiss (White in German), Blake (Black in Old English), and Yang (a shortening of sunlight in Chinese). Most characters are somehow named after colors, and they usually allude to some fairy tale, myth, legend, historical figure, or really anything else, with degree of allusion varying depending on the character. There's even a team of meme-inspired characters. Each character also has their own unique weapon, as well as a semblance, which is kind of a personal super-power, usually unique to the individual.
Also, whatever you do, assume nothing with this show. You will be proven wrong repeatedly.

RWBY has phenomenal music that is bespoke for the show itself. Almost all songs can be seen through the POV of one of characters, and while technically not canon, its pretty much considered canon by the FNDM. The show really does improve over time. It dips in middle but trust me its worth the ride. And the thing to consider is that this doesn't have the budget of a proper studio, and up till vol 5 every episode was made to be free on UA-cam until Warner bought it. So consider that.

For the people who are still enjoying the show like me, the big appeal for me is the character interactions and world building
I love seeing some characters grow and bloom while some struggle with their own minds
Another thing I love is that Rooster Teeth allows reactions to this show and even if you are accidentally claimed they’ll help you fix that
And the music! I’ve always loved the sound, its common for reactors in the community to react to the ost as well as each song is attributed to a character adding a lot of depth and charm!
It starts off a little rough but it’s the kind of show I think people just have to give a good try to

I 100% recommend this show. It’s so good. The story is great, and the characters are actually interesting and are given depth. Some characters get more growth than others, but most of the main characters go through some form of character development. This show does an amazing job at getting you invested in the characters and their stories. I’ve personally never been so attached to a character before I watched this show. This show is also very good at making you feel things, joy, anger, immense sadness, all of it. RWBY has made me cry more times than I can count tbh. And don’t get me started on the action/fights, the fights are choreographed so well! The animation is great too, though I will say the first couple seasons (1-3) are a little off putting for some, animation wise. This is because during the earlier seasons the team working on the show was smaller and it didn’t have the biggest budget, but as the team grew and funding increased so did the animation. Season 4 is when the animation starts to really pick up, and it only gets better from there. If you like amazing stories with fantasy elements and sick fights I’d recommend giving it a watch! Though I’d recommend you watch the trailers before starting volume 1. There are four trailers, one for each of the main girls.

That said, every character in this show is based off of/is influenced by a legend, myth, fairy tale (the brothers Grimm one’s, not the Disney ones), or historical figure. Funny you mention Final Fantasy, because that definitely was a major influence. RWBY is the Brain Child of Monty Oum, the animator behind Dead Fantasy, which was a really popular Dead or alive/final fantasy crossover series back in the early internet. He was known for being arguably one of the best spectacle Fight choreographers of all time. Sadly he passed away young during the production of season 3, but his friends and family chose to continue the series in his honor and it exploded in popularity. The first trailers from 2012 he made almost entirely solo, but as the years passed it got to the point of a full production team backed by Warner bros, several video games, like a crossover fighter with BlazBlue and Perosona, and even a full Anime Spin off show from Studio Shaft and Gen Urobuchi (Madoka magica, Psycho pass)
The music was done by Jeff Williams and vocals done by his daughter Casey who was only 12 during production of season 1. Her father retired after volume 8 and Now in her early 20’s she’s the lead composer as well as the lead singer of her own relatively successful prog rock band Ok goodnight.
Basic plot is fantasy combat school for the next generation of heroes, though it obviously evolves past that and they explore several countries with different real world influences and their own cultures/people to meet along the way. On a journey to defeat the big bad.

This show has incredible fights and a hell of a (still on-going) story, and the openings are just the tip of the iceberg to it's kickass soundtrack. The thing that caught my attention is that almost all of the characters are based on/references to old fairy tales. The 4 main characters of Team RWBY (yes, pronounced as Ruby) are loosely based on Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and Goldilocks. You should definitely check it out. First 3 volumes are a bit low budget and with shorter episodes, but after it picked up attention they got more budget to make it look even better as it goes. Also, the "Alice in Wonderland" feeling you got from the V9 opening is spot on, as where they are is based on exactly that.

Show fact: the creator of the show was something of a digital fight choreo genius, who fell in love with the simple yet effective Machinima style animation this web company RoosterTeeth was making, and asked to join them. To say his work in their animation was immediately noticeable, would be a major understatement. And throughout all of his extensive full-time work, he still managed to come up with the idea of this show, outline at least 13 seasons, single-handedly put together four informative teaser trailers to pitch his idea and find the artist - who will go on to sing in all of these openings - to provide unique songs for his trailers.

I always liked how in the early episodes they took a limitation in their tools (which were never intended to be used the way they were using them) and made stylistic choices that felt intentional and consistent with how you see the same sort of thing done in manga/comics. It was smart.

I adore several things about this show, but I think the “game-like” aspect you pointed out is absolutely what drew me in to begin with and is one of the reasons I STILL adore it so much so many years later.
I won’t spoil it in case you watch it but a lot of the worldbuilding, character designs, and fighting styles/fight scenes are clearly inspired by videogames. And I LOVE that.
This show and Jujitsu Kaisen are the only shows that can scratch that really niche itch for me.
Also your confusion about the story is warranted: it’s one of those shows where the goalpost shifts a lot as new information is revealed. Kind of like Attack on Titan if you’ve seen that-the lore doesn’t change necessarily, you and the character’s just learn more about it. As that happens, the goal of the characters in the show changes accordingly, and thus the overall storyline shifts. I personally love that kind of stuff, it makes for very fun rewatched as there’s actually a startling amount of subtle foreshadowing.

So, to talk about it without spoiling everything. RWBY (pronounced as Ruby) is a western anime series basically retellings of old classic fairy tales and folktales. It's a series about a group of girls known as Team RWBY as they attempt to become Huntsmen, heroes of the world that fight against the monsters of Grimm. What they don't realize is that things begin to change as their world begins to alter due to an ancient evil that attempts to erase all. Rwby began as a 'fan animation' created by Monty Oum with the help of Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross. The story starts with a young 14 year old girl on her way to become a full fledged 'Huntress' (Huntsman for males) as a career due to hearing stories of them as a child. After meeting someone of particular interest, she's been pushed ahead of her learning to attend a school with her older sister and finding herself to be leading a team of four.
I found the story quite interesting, especially with the MC being young, but having the will to keep up and push forwards with others that are older and a bit more experienced. The animation from Vol 1 - 3 are a bit sketchy sometimes, but the action sequences that were directed by Monty were incredible. The type of the animation was changed after volume 3, but were still questionable from time to time. Dialogue and situations are iffy throughout the series. With that being said, Im currently up to date on the episodes, watching it first on Crunchyroll, and will continue to watch till the end if the series.
I don't want to sugarcoat Rwby because not everyone has the same or similar taste, but I will admit that I've enjoyed it and still am.

The one drawback to watching the openings before settling into the series is that there are some major story spoilers in there, which could adversely affect a proper blind reaction to the series. And this is a series that was practically _made for_ reaction videos. (And cosplays. Loads of cosplays.)
The quick-and-dirty setup runs thuswise: Monty Oum, an animator at Rooster Teeth who specialized in combat choreography (seriously, his work in that is stupendous) went up to colleagues Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross and was like "Guys, guys, guys: Red, White, Black, Yellow." and they were like, "Uh...yup, those are indeed colors..." and he was like "no no no - they're girls, and they _fight monsters!_ " and they were like, "Ooo, tell us more!" and so the three of them got to brainstorming the series and characters and worldbuilding and plotting out an anime-style series that they could create in-house and that would be as rich and engaging a series as they could possibly do, and also feature badass girls in epic fight scenes. And so in 2013, _RWBY_ premiered with a season made on a shoestring budget, centering on a team of four students at a school for monster hunters, who eventually discover they're part of a much bigger conflict, with the fate of their entire world at stake. The show quickly became one of Rooster Teeth's signature franchises, and the budget and staff have grown quite a lot over the years, hence the increase in animation quality.
By the time the show had begun, Monty, Miles, & Kerry had plotted out a story that would encompass a good 12 volumes, so even though Monty died unexpectedly while volume 3 was in preproduction, the other two have been able to carry on the series they all planned out together, and with 9 volumes completed, it definitely feels like we've entered the home stretch. Alas, with RT now owned by Warner Bros., the chances the series will get finished is sadly up in the air. But we can all hope it will happen, and we always like to induct new members into the fandom (or FNDM) whenever we can.

RWBY started off as a UA-cam series. The first volume (season) of RWBY was released back in 2013. It was made with a super small budget back in the day, that's why the first few volumes seem super basic in visuals and that's why the visuals get better with each passing volume since their budget increased and they could afford to animate it better. At least that's what I have gathered by watching the show and not doing any real research.
Spoiler free synopsis of the show would be that it's a story about huntress team RWBY in the world of Remnant that is inhabited by the "demon dogs" called Grimm. (RWBY being their team name that is made up of the letters of the team's members' first names (and also the prominent colors of their looks) Ruby (red), Weiss (white), Blake (black) and Yang (yellow).)
A lot of the stuff you saw in the openings is very well hidden unless you've watched the show so at first glance it doesn't seem to have too much of a story. It has a very well written story, although a little basic at first. It gets very good over time and the characters get also a good amount of development.
As of the current moment, seems like volume 9 is currently ongoing.
Also, not fully sure, but I think all the openings are sung by the same singer and are exclusively made for the show. The lyrics themselves hold a lot of meaning usually and set the tone for the volume. That's why the songs seem to go from super kick-ass rock beat to something more sad for example.
I love this show and I've been watching it since the first volume was being released, it's been a really enjoyable journey and I do hope you join me and everyone else who has seen this show on this wild ride that is RWBY.
(There also is a "loose" japanese remake of the show called RWBY: Hyousetsu Teikoku that more or less remade some of the story of RWBY and I think even changed it a bit. I have no real idea what it actually is compared to the original show since I haven't watched it myself, but I heard it looks super good and is pretty okay.)

Backstory of RT: The production company Rooster Teeth were a machinma group who used to make short parody clips around gaming and upload them to the internet, one of their most popular series is called Red Vs Blue which they used the game Halo to make their series and was hugely popular.
RWBY is their original creation which started on a low budget and smaller team of artists, but the lead creator Monty Oum passed away after the second season due to heart transplant complications.
His team continued to make the series in his name and with each season of short episodes, the team grew as well as the budget and the animation tools along the way.
Non-Spoiler Story: RWBY starts with adventurers in training to become hunters who can eradicate the Grim (the beasts) and stumble upon enemies along their way.
Unique aspect of the series: Each weapon has two uses which dynamically changes the combat from close quarters to ranged: Ruby uses a scythe that folds out to a sniper rifle, Yang uses heavy metal gauntlets that doubles as a shotgun, Blake uses a barbed whip which doubles as a pistol and Weiss uses a rapier that she uses to cast her spells and that is only to name a few as allies and enemies also come with their own weapons and abilities.
That's enough eye strain from me, go ahead and watch it, you wont be disappointed.

  • @jecrex8349
    @jecrex8349 Рік тому

RWBY (Pronounced ruby) is an acronym for Ruby/Red, Weiss/White, Blake/Black, and Yang/Yellow. It is an action based anime with Fairy Tale inspirations (for example: Ruby is based off of Little Red Riding Hood, Weiss' full name translates to White Snow=Snow White, Blake is Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and Yang is Goldilocks). The Series creator was also the head animator for both RWBY and Red vs Blue, but sadly passed away during Volume 3 (V3 for short) which led to a dip in fight choreography quality afterwards. The Volumes are structured into sets of 3, V1-3 covers the set up of the main cast and forces them to leave to combat school to begin unraveling a greater mystery, V4-6 are dealing with the fallout of V3, learning of and coming to terms with the greater threat the world faces, and V7/8 is a reckoning that the heroes must take their hits and learn from them while stranded in V9's wonderland allusion.
Openings: These will play at the end of Volume Premieres to avoid spoilers and before every following episode begins thereafter. V7 for instance spoils a character's return, so once you begin to watch the show, do not go rewatch openings for volumes you have not started yet.
Animation: fight scenes are top notch, even in the dark time of Volumes 4 and 5 post Monty Oum. V1-3 were animated in Poser with assets transferred from MAYA, while V4 onward as been done in MAYA outright, hence the sudden change in style. Plus virtually every melee weapon you see is also a gun.
Characters: as stated above every character has some sort of fairy tale, fable, folklore, or mythos inspiration with heavy emphasis on The Wizard of Oz for the mentors. The B-team for instance (JNPR-Juniper-Jaune/Nora/Pyrrha/Ren) are all mythos/legends characters who cross dressed at some point (Jaune-Joan of Arc, Pyrrha-Achilles, Nora-Thor, Ren-Mulan).
Magic System: Every character manifests an ability referred to as a semblance, a flashy superpower unique* to them and their fighting style (Weiss' is hereditary). This power is drawn from their Aura, their soul, which is also used for generic augmentation, healing, and a defensive shield; this aura is finite and must be replenished over time and if broken the character will lose access to their semblance temporarily. The world also uses a fossil fuel of elemental crystal called 'Dust' for various effects. We have seen: Wind, Fire, Ice, Earth, Gravity, and Hard Light and have heard of Water and Plant dust. What can be done with dust depends on how it's user approaches it.
Music: V1-8 the songs were written and performed by Jeff Williams with his Daughter, Casey Lee Williams (who was 12 during recording for V1), became the lead vocalist. With Jeff retiring due to Burnout, Casey and her bandmate Martin Gonzales have stepped up in his stead from V9 onwards. The songs are indirectly tied to the story but directly to the characters. For instance Ruby's main theme comes from the songs Red Like Roses pt.1 and pt. 2. The lyrics for part 2 show her hidden pain over the passing of her mother a decade before the show began. Weiss' songs elude to her sense of loneliness, Blake's show how the people she around affect her outlook on life, and Yang's show her badass can't keep me down mentality (which hits harder after her V4-6 arc). I would highly recommend watching lyric videos to grasp which character(s) a song applies to and how it fits in with the context of the story. While the Volume Opening songs reflect their Volume fairly well, many themes from them come back up in later volumes.
Flaws: Writing is great at points and poor at others. Some things were so subtle as to appear like it came out of nowhere down the line (looking at those who complain about V7-8 plot), whereas some issues they try to tackle fall flat or miss the mark entirely (background racism/extremism discussion being the most blatant in V1-3). Volume 5 is the worst the show has to offer with pacing and use of the cast/setting, it's budget consumed by the 3 excellent shorts that should've served as their characters' introduction to the volume.
Plot: I won't say much here to avoid spoilers but this is a slow burn that turns up the heat in later volumes within the 3 volume arcs and the series as a whole. The show is at its best when dealing with darker themes (mild horror, trauma, depression, loss) while maintaining a PG-13 rating on 99% of its over 100 episodes (V9E8 being the only one I can recall getting a Mature rating).
Acting: The VAs get better with each passing season, so don't worry about the poorer quality of some of them in earlier volumes (Adam is the exception, the worst written, most wooden performance across the entire show). Some of the VAs have left* the show/company over the years and had to be replaced (*Ren was voiced by Monty until his untimely passing, his brother Neith took up the role in his stead, only one other character has needed to be recast/modified due to a VA's passing but their Character is a Spoiler).
Pro Tip: Watch the Character Trailers (Red, White, Black, Yellow for V1, V4 trailer, V5 Weiss, Blake, Yang character shorts, and V6 Adam short) before their respective volumes. All are canon and shed light on the characters.
Volume/Episode Length: Volume length has grown from a 2 Hour runtime across 16 episodes (most of them pairing up as 2 part episodes) in V1 to a 4.5 Hour Runtime across 14 episodes in V8 (V9 is 10 episodes long telling a more concise 2.5 Hour story).
I love this show, despite its flaws, and would say come for the action, stay for the music and deep character beats. If you like this sorta thing, go watch Red vs Blue as well (Season 6-13, before 6 hasn't aged well but can give further context, after 13 has terrible writing so proceed with caution, full animation comes in during Season 8 and is at its best in 9&10 which is just before Monty passed).

You are definitely spot on about the increase in budget, it's even more noticeable watching the episodes of the show in season 1 vs season 9. Your struggle to tell if they are fighting for one goal or against each other is really hitting on a big theme of the show, and yeah, the evil looking woman is the big bad....though interestingly she doesn't appear and isn't mentioned at all until season 4.
Also good eye on the colors. RWBY stands for the names of the 4 main characters, but also their dominant color: Red, White, Black, Yellow.

Great reaction. This is an awesome anime. It started with a concept trailer done by its creator, Monty Oum. Unfortunately, he died between the 2nd and 3rd volumes/seasons. He lived long enough to see his creation become the 1st anime exported from the U.S. to be broadcast in Japan, with its own Japanese VAs.
Unfortunately, he didn't live long enough to see it become so popular that it put Rooster Teeth on the map to where it was purchased by the major studio Warner Bros, had a Japanese anime spinoff made, just finished up its 9th volume/season, and just had a Justice League x RWBY Crossover movie released by WB.
The singer for the intros, and almost all of the songs in the series, is, as others have mentioned, Casey Lee Williams. She was 12 years old when she sang the song for the Red Trailer (the 1st proof of concept trailer). Her father, Jeff Williams, was the writer/composer/musician for the series, up until volume 9, when he retired.
I highly suggest you react to the trailers Red, White, Black, and Yellow. Rooster Teeth appreciates those who react to the series as it was created and first posted on YT. Because of that, they don't require that the series be edited, and actually prefer that it isn't. If the YT bot does flag it, they've even set up a web page to get the information needed to contact them so that they can clear the video for you.
Even if you don't react to the series, and since you liked the music, I very strongly ask that you at least react to the "Red Like Roses Part 1 and 2" song from the 1st volume/season. Watching the combined parts is the best. You can watch it here:

Again, it was sung by the 12 year old Casey. In Part 2, which is after the bridge, you hear her mother, Sandy Casey, sing with her. The talent this girl has, even at just 12 yo and with no formal vocal training besides her parents, is very, very good. As you heard from all of the openings. You could hear her voice age as each intro was played. I hope you enjoy it.

To try to answer your question about what the plot is... well it's hard to go into a ton of detail without providing major spoilers but I'll do my best.
RWBY starts out as a fairly traditional anime style school drama about a group of girls (Team RWBY) and their friends (primarily Team JNPR) who are going to school to become licensed monster fighters in a world plagued with monstrous creatures known as Grimm (aka: the demon dogs).
The story progresses and they leave school early (the reason why is a *major* spoiler) and begin to discover a lot of hidden, dark truths about their world and beyond, and realize it's up to them to try to figure out how to save it... unfortunately they're learning this, as you picked up, while their world is plunged into war.
In general you can assume most of the teens in the openings are on the good guys side while the adults are more 50/50. And while there are lots of fights in the show, there's a ton of complicated plot stuff accompanying said fight scenes. This is a show that's known for making people cry (and not just because of sad stuff).
As for the symbols in the last opening. It's actually a thing, at least among their order of monster fighters, where each of them has their own individual emblem, almost like a signature, that they wear on their clothes/put on their weapons/etc.
Also a fun world building tidbit, all of the characters are allusions to fairy tale/mythological characters, real life people, or *occasionally* memes. For example, the main four characters are based off of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Belle/The Beast (from Beauty and the Beast), and Goldilocks.

It's cool that you find it a Final Fantasy vibe because the creator of RWBY actually got inspired by his prior proyect Dead-Fantasy, a series of 3D animation fight secuence with the Final Fantasy characters, you can look at them here on youtube. Those videos are the basis for the prime concept of RWBY.

Hey Gaz, I have a spoiler-free synopsis of the world of RWBY up to the start of the start of the first episode, for you. It'll probably be a long comment but should help you gauge weather or not you want to watch it. (And best believe if you do, every single person who made a comment here will watch your reactions religiously)
In the world of Remnant, creatures that exist solely to kill and destroy, known as Grimm, are a looming threat to every kingdom and city mankind has built. The Grimm are known to annihilate entire cities, so Huntsmen and Huntresses, professional slayers of monsters and sanctioned police, are commonplace, with academies in every kingdom that train enthusiastic youths to become professional monster-slayers.
But monsters aren't the only evil in Remnant, so Huntsmen and Huntresses dedicate their lives to rooting out all evil, be it monster, or man. Evil is afoot, and a certain darkness has set its eye on the kingdom of Vale.
A few key details, an element called Dust allows the use of very magic-like power, every person has their own unique superpower called a Semblance, and all Huntsmen and Huntresses have been trained to use the power of their soul to create Aura, a limited but extremely powerful form if self-protection that renders one immune to harm, and provides extremely fast healing of injury, to an individual. Aura, though, is a finite, if renewable, energy, so if it soaks up too much damage, both your immunity to damage and your ability to use your Semblance, fail until you've had time to recover.
And no, it's not a game or game world, it's just people trying to survive and chase their dreams in a world where any day, an army of thousands of monsters could suddenly knock your kingdom off the face of the world.
I'd say about 40% of the series' screen time is over-the-top spectacle fighting, usually with heavy story implications, and the other 60% is worldbuilding and character develoent.
The first couple seasons start off slow and yes, their animation back then was pretty low budget, but it's a pretty great show with a wonderful balance of sky-high happy moments and extremely depressing lows

RWBY first came out in 2013 and has been coming out roughly one volume a year (there was a hiatus of two years for volume 9); the animation for the first three volumes was in a program called Poster but they moved over to using Maya shortly after their lead animator (and one of the three major creative minds for the series) Monty Oum passed away.
Hard to describe RWBY without giving away loads and loads of spoilers but your off the cuff 'it's kinda like final fantasy' and 'loads of action' is pretty on the mark I'd say (personally I tend to think of the series as a shonnen styled magical girl series but er, that might be just me XD).
I will say there IS plot and it can go at a very rapid pace (literally eyeblink in some parts) and often requires a bit of reflective 'what are the implications of this' think past volume 3 to understand everything -massive rewatch bonus because of that, but by the same token is still pretty fun just to go with the flow of things too so... Yeah. Just be wary of tons of spoilers and fanatical haters/lovers of the series and individual characters in the comments; having someone familiar with the series to moderate your comment section for you is heartily recommended if you can find them~ XD
Anyway, if you're interested in reacting to the series, I highly recommend starting with the color trailers (Red, White, Black, Yellow) as they're more akin to character shorts than regular trailers, and um dunno if you need it but have Peppermintblue's spoilerfree google doc guide for reactors -has information about how to contact Rooster Teeth if UA-cam's bots are giving you take down issue, as well as watch order, various side series and OST videos with lyrics, etc ( docs.google.com/document/d/1zUxy2ImDWwWDIC_vbk_3mk4TQqSWnf-FhVryyRxW1ig/edit ).
Hope that helps and looking forward to possibly seeing another RWBY fan's vids in the future~

The basic run down for the show is that each character (and certain locations) are based of a fairy tale, for example the main character ‘Ruby’ is from the tale the red riding hood, it’s why she wears a cloak with a hood and has the red colour theme. They play with these themes a lot throughout the show, it’s better to watch the show then explain the story as there’s tons to talk about but it’s more fun to just watch as they explain it pretty quickly. All you need to know is it’s a action heavy show, created by Monty Oum who was an animator who created the ‘red’ trailer (which you should definitely watch) all on his own (with help on the music, who would create all the music moving forward) just so he could create his own show with the people he was working for.

I love RWBY so much and I think you will love it too. A bit of trivia for you, "RWBY" is the first initial of the girl's names; Ruby, Weiss, Blake & Yang and it is the name of their team at the school they attend. They each are named after a colour; Red ,White, Black & Yellow. They are also inspired by fairy tails, Ruby is after Little Red Riding Hood for example, I won't spoiler the other three. I highly recommend watching the Red, White, Black & Yellow trailers, they were released before Volume 1 and provide a back story for each of the girls. The story is about them attending school to learn to fight the monsters and later their story after they leave school and try to save the world :)

I love this series! The cool thing is all the characters are based on fairytale characters! Like Weiss is based on Snow White, Yang is based on Goldilocks, ruby based on red riding hood.
I forgot who Blake is based on.
The headmaster ozpin is based on the wizard in the wizard of oz.
Things like that are so cool to me!
The soundtrack is also amazing! It’s crazy to me that Casey lee Williams was only 13 when she sang the song for vol 1.
    The humor is amazing.
The fight scenes are so cool! And the story is spectacular.

RWBY was one of those shows where I first thought to myself "Am I really going to like this?". This was before I knew it was Monty who had created it. The same Monty I grew up watching with Dead Fantasy. So I gave it a chance. And wow.... just wow. It just gets better and better every season. The story is so captivating and deep, and the mystery and action really get you hooked... but it's every single character, their dynamics, personalities, reactions, emotions... that's what will make you fall in love with this show.
I am LOVING the new season.
Also, s4 intro was my favorite. No one asked xD but I still jam the hell out to it almost every other day.
I know a large number of people write it off because they're not use to the animation style and honestly- to those people- You are doing yourself a disservice.

Something about the series which really makes it work for me: Setting aside the music and badass fight scenes; it has a fairly well mixed recipe of YA writing tropes (Which I've grown to adore in my adulthood rather than my youth), Fairy Tale references, and how quickly everything turns.... _Grimm_ ...
The writing at times can seem and often is; simple and obvious but that's part of why the fans adore it. RWBY isn't supposed to one of the greatest examples of writing that American animated storytelling but because it's skirted that responsibility, it's quickly became that for me. It's just clever enough to keep you invested but obvious enough that you know where the writing is taking us. And it takes us for a freakin' ride, man.
I cannot stress again how grim the story gets in some places. That's probably the best part for me. We get 90% fun and badass but that 10% of darkness is DARK.
    *Edit*
Funny you mention Final Fantasy because I've mentally drawn a lot of connections to the way the story is written and portrayed to FF. Not directly but the vibe is similar.

It's hard to grasp the story from watching the openings completely blind, but there's definitely a ton of story and lore behind this show. Once you get to know the characters, the scenes shown in the openings start to mean a LOT more.
Also, you were correct in that one caterpillar character looking like the one from Alice in Wonderland. In fact, the entire theme with the show is that it's based around characters from fairy tales, mythology, and folklore. Our main four characters (the red, white, black, and yellow characters) are based on Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and Goldilocks.
If you want to get an idea of if it's something you want to try watching, I'd recommend checking out the four trailers they released when the show debuted, the 'Red' trailer, the 'White' trailer, the 'Black' trailer, and the 'Yellow' trailer

if you ever react to RWBY content and have issues with youtube just get in contact with Rooster Teeth they are very lenient to people doing reactions, usually don't need to blur the video/cut audio/or skip parts at all.
Honestly I didn't think much of it at first and forgot about it for a while but then ran back across it later when volume 5 was releasing and decided to give it another chance, it's now one of my favorite series.
the show in a nutshell - in a world where monsters called Grimm are everywhere there are only a few places considered completely safe, Huntsmen and Huntresses are people trained to fight these monsters but they don't have to do that exclusively, everyone has the potential to unlock their own "superpower" called a Semblance, how they unlock it varies from person to person and the power is generally based on their personality as it's tied to their soul.

Tad bit late to the party but here we go.
The first trailer for RWBY was released in November 2012 and the first episode was in July 2013 just to give you some perspective of a time frame if you didn't have it already. And the animation change between volume 3 and 4 was because they changed over to the maya engine, hence the upgrade in graphics.
For me, the first 3 volumes will always have a unique charm (either because of nostalgia or because Monty Oum was still working on it) but I will always love the fight scenes. The nature scenery (especially in later volumes) are also beautiful. But personally, my favorite thing about this series is the music, it will tell you so much about what's happening and I just enjoy listening to it in general. If you wanted a tiny bit more of a glimpse into the openings, I would definitely suggest looking at the lyrics.
I hope you enjoy RWBY if you do decide to watch it!
